By Daniel Burke, CNN

(CNN) As news broke of the big Supreme Court rulings on gay marriage, religious leaders took to Twitter to express joyous praise or strong condemnation.

odds have nothing to do with the existence of god

the odds of a leaf falling on the ground from a tree in a particular spot in the woods are lower than winning the lottery so its really a matter of the 50/50 rule it either is or isn't and in the case of god most likely its in the isnt category

“The constitution gives you the freedom to hold, and spout, the dimwitted opinions that you have”
=>No, that freedom was a gift from God which is why Adam and Eve were free to do as they pleased yet suffer the consequence. The constitution is hardly followed thus it has no force. Constraint on what you spout or I spout is self imposed for all sorts of reasons. That authority that keeps us in check is not the constitution but a higher authority.

“The freedoms we have in the US, we have in spite of the religious, not because of them.”
=>Those freedoms are being taken away one by one as we drift away from a society ruled by eternal respected accountability towards rule of man. Men regardless of religion or lack of it fall to desire.

“It's just about equal rights. It doesn't take anything from those that oppose them.”
=>I assume you are again focused on gay marriage. In this case two brothers who love each other and want to marry but are not gay are not given the same equal rights.

“ love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, endurance and against such there is no law that has authority." You said:If following your fairy tale makes you a better person, more power to you. That doesn't mean it is inherently good.”
=>what is wrong with you? Give me one of the above that is not inherently good.

“ The discrimination against gays based on it, for instance, makes it despicable.”
=>none of the above can result in discrimination against gays.

“ A healthy skepticism is what this country needs.”
=>yours is not a healthy skepticism

Well, fred you do like to paint your own rosy picture that is far from reality.

You have no proof; not even reasonable evidence of anything you are claiming, as usual. The ~40,000 sects of insanity have not produced the rosy picture you paint. More importantly they have disenfranchised many along the way in attempting to meet "objective" truths that they often can't agree upon. Of course, nothing in the minds of humans can be purely objective without some consensus, ergo objective morality, or objective whatever is a ludicrous notion.

"that freedom was a gift from God"

As long as we never use it, right? What kind of gift is that?

It's like your Mom giving you a motorcycle for your birthday, but forbidding you ever to ride it!

God says "Do what you want, but if you do anything I don't like then I'll punish you." How much different is this from some nut job holding a gun to your head and daring you to do anything they don't want you to? Some "free" will.

How about lynching Paula Dean or any other white person who dare say Niger even in a proper context?
A democrat congressmen just called Clarence Thomas Uncle Thomas and gets a pass while a republican would be hung.
Mankind is the problem not religion when it comes to intolerance.

"that freedom was a gift from God" you said:"As long as we never use it, right? What kind of gift is that?"
=>beginning with the first man we used that freedom to reject the things of God

"It's like your Mom giving you a motorcycle for your birthday, but forbidding you ever to ride it!"
=>wish my mom did that, but no, just like God she let go out and break bones over and over.

"God says "Do what you want, but if you do anything I don't like then I'll punish you."
=>no, you have free will to live outside the presence of God. It was not God, my mom or the motorcycle that was responsible for my irresponsibility. Broken bones were the result of me thinking I knew better

The odds of a kid making it in pro ball is remote regardless of the effort to follow all the rules and best authorities on the subject. Christ was the absolute and objectively the top authority. All Christians try as they may yet fall short. That does not reduce the authority or diminish the absolute moral law.

Following the way produces “ love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, endurance and against such there is no law that has authority."- The reason is because it is Divine, it is of God there is no higher authority that has yet to overrule it.

      Roger that
"No, that freedom comes from a government which is separated from your religion."
=>If they are separated from religion how is it they put so many laws on the books that discriminate against gays?
=>If they are separated from religion how is it that "In God we Trust" is plastered everywhere?
=>If they are separated from religion how is it that a president cannot be elected without a Christian cross?
=>If they are separated from religion how is it that the Supreme Court must continually slap them across their secular faces for carrying the Christian flag?

      June 27, 2013 at 4:42 pm |
    • In Santa we trust

fred, You think Paula Deen used the word ironically? To emphasize what?

      June 27, 2013 at 4:52 pm |
    • mama k

fred: "That does not reduce the authority or diminish the absolute moral law."

You still skirted around my point, I see.

You can talk about all kinds of human experience throughout recorded history regarding morality, but you are in no way providing evidence for anything purely objective. Objective truth, objective morality, you name it. Everything we have come to believe or accept as some kind of truth – even "1 + 1=2" has only been done so via some kind of consensus. Therefore we know of nothing that is purely objective. If you think you have something that fits that category, then, by all means, don't just say what it is – you have to say how you came by such knowledge for it to pass the test.

      June 27, 2013 at 5:38 pm |
    • mama k

And fred I think for the sake of our conversation we could agree that your "absolute" equals my use of "objective".

      June 27, 2013 at 5:39 pm |
    • fred

      mamma k
So, objectively you really do not know if you exist or not? Objectively you really do not know if what you see is reality or a perception of reality?

Then the war starts when the peaceful Jesus-guy meets the peaceful Mohammed-guy, and they disagree on who's telling the truth about the 'truth' and they cannot come to an agreement. Later, in a struggle for ultimate power over the 'truth' many die, and the 'truth' was forever lost in the blood spilled over WHAT 'truth' would be 'THE ULTIMATE TRUTH'. Which, truthfully..... no one knows. Except the 'one true God', of course.....

      But who's that?

  7. Ovder 40,000 sects of insanity

One sect calls homosexuality an abomination while the next one (over four million members) in the same denomination is already performing gay marriage. One sect, the Westboro Baptist Church believes Americans are being killed at war because America is too kind to "fags". Many of these sects are equally divergent on the roles of women in society.

One sect believes that Jesus and Satan were brothers and that Christ will return to Jerusalem AND Jackson County, Missouri. Some believe the Pope is the Antichrist. Some believe Obama is the Antichrist.

Some believe that celibacy is the only option for certain people, or for people in certain positions. Many of the people from these same institutions advocate against abortion, but pretend not to understand the realistic benefit of the morning after pill or even basic contraception; their unrealistic wishful thinking is causing the death of many at the hands of disease.

Recently we learned from CNN of a child dying when their parents, members of a Christian sect in Philadelphia, as part of their faith, refused medical care. When incidents like the subject of this article come to light, many Christians are only too ready to try explain how another Christian's interpretation of ancient "scripture" is not quite right. Thirty one states have child abuse religious exemption laws. Faith healing churches have been linked to 2 dozen child deaths.

Conflicted right from the start, Christianity has resulted in extreme divisions, with each division trying to assert itself as some true messenger of the word of the Christian God.

Millions of innocent men, women, and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined, imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites. To support roguery and error all over the earth.

There is no "truth absolute". If that were the case, a god would be subject to a system which it did not create.
At the very least the "truth" would have to be relative to what god creates.

The stupid Hindis prolly not so much.

No need to read some ones hinduism, absurdity, nothing can exist without truth absolute, such as life, one has to be in hind, blindness to deny existence and power of truth absolute GOD, HE is not subject to truth, but truth HIMSELF.

If he IS truth, then there has to way a assess that. That proves that if god IS truth, and it has any meaning "truth absolute" exists as a meaningful term outside of your god. Otherwise you are just saying truth is truth, or god is god. If you are going to say "god is truth", they exist separately, or your words or meaningless. If they exists separately, truth and god are not the same, and she did not create truth, or the external meaning was absent. Can't have it both ways.

Future generations will probably look over the 'Comments' section related to articles like this one, to gauge the thoughts of the people from that particular time period. Long after religion's influence over reason. I can hear scores of future generations laughing at our 'adult reasoning' of the world around us.

Conviction defined as the act of convincing a person of error or of compelling the admission of a truth.
Truth, JESUS is Lord of lords, King of kings, Prince of Peace, Everlasting Almighty God.

Who gave his life so we can live.

      Who reigns forever more.

The alpha and omega, beginning without end, Savior of mankind,

      And coming back soon.

Creator of all things, seen and unseen.

      Faithful and true.

The way, truth and life – abundantly.

      The Name above all names.

Truth be told, I didn't realize you were unaware of this truth.

      Now you know.

So, what will you do with this truth? And JESUS?

Decisions are tough, courage is lacking, it will take faith.

God loves you! Know that! He is waiting for your answer. Today.

    • What The lying Tom is trying to say

Conviction defined as the act of convincing a person of error or of compelling the admission of a truth.
Truth, JESUS is Lord of lords, King of kings, Prince of Peace, Everlasting Almighty God. But we all know God is a lie.

Who gave his life so we can live? Nobody.

      Who reigns forever more? Nobody.

The alpha and omega, beginning without end, Savior of mankind? Savior from what? I don't know, I just make shlt up.

And coming back soon? He would have to have been here to be able to come back.

Creator of all things, seen and unseen? That is the definition of my imagination.

Faithful and true? Faithful yes, true, not so much.

The way, truth and life – abundantly? My way, my truth, abundance for me please.

The Name above all names? Whats in a name anyway when you can change it to put words in your opponents mouth?

So, what will you do with my lies? And JESUS?

Decisions are tough, courage is lacking, it will take faith, aka fake reasoning to reach my conclusions.

I don't think Jesus "wept" except for those poor souls who professed hate instead of love. Just guessing, but a guy who hung around with, ate and slept with 12 other dudes in the desert probably wouldn't have a problem with modern guys doing it.The guys who wrote about not masturbating didn't do so until long after Jesus died, so I doubt he saw that as a rule and I'm sure he discovered that in his teens, just like every guy does.

Why are the religionauts acting like troops of gay commandos are going to storm their churches and force the shamans to perform gay marriage ceremonies at gun point?
Whatever sorts of supernatural nonsense you want to believe should not have any bearing on secular law.
There are plenty of people who are legally married and yet "living in sin" in the eyes of one church or another – like everybody who divorced and remarried.

GOD IS NOT SURPRISED AND STILL ON HIS THRONE IN HEAVEN.

      June 27, 2013 at 1:54 pm |
    • mama k

And of course many Xtians in the U.S. have always cried persecution.

Ben Franklin (in London, from a letter to The London Packet, 3 June 1772):

If we look back into history for the character of present sects in Christianity, we shall find few that have not in their turns been persecutors, and complainers of persecution. The primitive Christians thought persecution extremely wrong in the Pagans, but practised it on one another. The first Protestants of the Church of England, blamed persecution in the Roman church, but practised it against the Puritans: these found it wrong in the Bishops, but fell into the same practice themselves both here and in New England.
