Granderson: A boy named 'Messiah'?

Opinion by LZ Granderson, CNN Contributor

(CNN) - I once met a mother who named her newborn daughter Kia Sophia.

Yes, like the car.

Apparently she had one and liked it so much that she wanted to be reminded of it each time she said her baby's name.

As we stood there, I could tell this was something she was very proud of, and so I tried my best not to look embarrassed for her.

Besides, who was I to judge? I'm named after a useless, deadbeat father. At least the car had resale value.

Meh. I could care less if someone names their kid GOD. A name is only a name and the important thing is how that kid is raised.

Unfortunately the research indicates a name can have an enormous impact on a child. Names make one more or less desirable to employers, and are correlated with behavioral problems when compared to differently named siblings.

It's still not something on which this woman should be ruling on religious grounds, but it's not trivial.

Interestingly, this author's birth name was Elzie. He says he dumpled the name b/c of his father, but I would guess the fact it looks like a feminine name (almost identical to Elsie) would have been problematic.

  5. Let Them go in pain!

The point is that we are to eliminate the Christian faith from the planet! That includes the use of the word Messiah!

Hey, the author's surname contains "Grander Son". Isn't that blasphemous too?
