Thousands of priests from around the globe have gathered in Rome this week to mark the end of the Vatican's Year for Priests, and Pope Benedict XVI is expected to address the church sex abuse scandal during the event.

Cemeteries are known for telling the stories of the people buried there. But the symbols on headstones and monuments can tell a different story: how our view of death has changed over time.

“Historic cemeteries really function as outdoor museums,” says Steve Estroff, education manager at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.

What makes people happy?

Happiness is something we all strive for in our lives. But is there a secret ingredient to being happy?

We asked five faith leaders of varying perspectives to answer the question, "What makes people happy?" Their answers showed that happiness comes from meaning and purpose in life. It's in your heart and soul and can come from helping others.

And if you're looking for perfect happiness, it doesn't exist. But imperfect happiness does.

New York City's St. Vincent's shuts doors

After 161 years of treating survivors of major catastrophes, from the sinking of the Titanic to the attacks of September 11, and leading early HIV treatments, New York's St. Vincent's Hospital closed Friday.

There were a few community rallies to keep the private nonprofit hospital open, but the efforts did not succeed. Saddled by financial woes, the Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers board of directors voted to close the hospital this month. By Friday, no patients were left, and about 3,500 employees were laid off.
