Pakistan shuts down Facebook over 'Draw Mohammed Day'

Pakistan is blocking access to Facebook in response to an online group calling on people to draw the Prophet Mohammed, officials said Wednesday.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority issued the order a day before "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day," scheduled by a Facebook group with the same name.

Its good that they have blocked facebook in pakistan. This cuts communication between the terrorists in Pakistan and their counterparts around the world.

OMG, Freedom 200 has figured it. Shut down Facebook and you will shut down the terrorists. Brilliant idea. Ignore the other webs (like the terrorists own websites). It was Facebook all along. Call off the Marnies, tell the our boys they can come home now. The terrorists will give up once they can not get onto Facebook to update their status, post pictures of their family and friends, or play MafiaWars.

And you wonder why there is so much hate ... I am a Pakistani by birth who is educated and technologically more advanced then most of you. When certain buttons are pushed you get a reaction out of the brainwashed people.
No where in Quran does it say that drawings of prophets must not be made.. but its not recommended just so people do not make idols out of them.. or posters like DrawMohammed wont mock them.

Bestman – Don't be a jerk. Facebook is the primary way that I communicate with the Foreign Exchange Student we hosted last year. She also made straight A's while she went to school here.

  6. Pro Bono Publico

Fingerman is totally un-informed: Pakistan even allows seats for non-Muslims in its parliament. Churches and temples abound. Xmas day is a national holiday. The head of the nation's federal Public Service Commission is a Hindu, [Supreme Court] Justice (ret.) Bhagwandas.
However, Muslims will not accept blasphemy, whichever Prophet of God may be the target of the insult - Adam, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, or Muhammad (peace upon them all).

I hope there's a war between muslims and non-muslims. There's 5 million of us, and unlike you camel riding goofballs, we live in the 21st century and don't get offended by cartoons.

5 BILLION of us. Vs. 1 billion goofy muslims – most of whom would probably switch teams on the drop of a dime anyway.

the west is about to lead itself to the dark ages, money going out to china and israel, ethics and morals on the decline, women shelters filled with women seeking refuge from their abusive husbands ... and you are supporting a group that insults and hurts feelings of nearly one quarter of humans on earth!

      yes. get over it.

    • Joel

Money going out to China and Israel? What exactly does this article or particular issue have to do with China or Israel? It is fascinating how you manage to rope Israel into your discussion. What exactly is your issue with Israel? As for the dark ages, take a look at how women are treated in most muslim countries and you will better understand the dark ages. The abuse that women suffer in the west is not tolerated by the law whereas in many muslim countries the law expressly tolerates the subjugation and abuse of women.

Actually , many of us like Muslims ,
It is the rabid , psychotic clerics that encourage attacks on people like artists that we are fed up with .

When you get control of those demons who are defiling the true spirit of Muhammad , let us know .
Until then , We jail the retarded right wing Christians who go fascist on us , we have no trouble sending your jihadists to the next world either .

Mohammad had no issues screwing woman with his fart face. Why would he have issues to be drawn? Draw him naked, draw him taking a dump, draw him washing his ass with water, draw the crap out of him.

      May 19, 2010 at 10:22 am |
    • Red Dirt

We do draw Jesus taking a dump, blowing his nose and whatever we feel like drawing him doing. I don't, I don't see the point, I'm sure he did, but why draw it? But I don't get offended when someone does. Why should I care what someone else thinks? That's the point here, believe what you believe, let others do the same. If you really believe in your God, do you think He (or She) needs you to defend their honor? It's YOU who are offended. It's YOU who needs to find solace in your beliefs. I don't understand why so many people, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, atheist or whatever feel the need to have the whole world believe what they believe. Unless the are so insecure in their faith that they feel threatened when someone believes something else. Get over yourself, God will be fine.

Islam promotes belief and worship of one God alone, so by prohibiting the drawing of Prophets it is guarding against eventual idolatry. Buddha never told anyone to worship him, and yet there are statues, paintings, and other depictions of him that are now worshiped. The Virgin Mary, Jesus...all of these figures promoted believe in the one All-Powerful God, and yet they are depicted and worshiped to. Muhammad was a man, not someone to worship, so Muslims don't want later generations to treat him as more than that through using pictures, idols, etc. of him. I think it's sad how little respect we have for religions other than our own.

      May 19, 2010 at 10:12 am |
    • smc

Hossam, you're an idiot! I've never seen Jesus, but I've seen many drawings of him. I think Muslims ought to take a chill pill.

    • smc

Hey, I work on a farm, and I have a pig. Guess what I named him? By the way, I do have respect for other people's religions. OMG, imagine if people were up in arms over Michalangelo's painting of a church ceiling? How beautiful is the Sistine Chapel? Get a life.

Why is not so relevant as the issue of trying to force others to comply with their religion by firebombing and encouraging the killing of artists who do Not comply with their religion .

The real WHY is Why are they fascists ? Not content with living their religion but violently attacking others an trying to force them to comply with their neurotic rules ?

  20. Fingerman

In Pakistan you are free to practice whatever religion you like. As long as it is Islam. And as long as you practice it the way the government decrees. When the US seems to get a little silly about separating Church and State, reread this article and you will remember why it is so important to maintain that separation.

    May 19, 2010 at 9:51 am |
    • um

well, let's not get carried away, i wouldn't say the states is a beacon of high religious standards..

"In Pakistan you are free to practice whatever religion you like" – you joking right? 🙂

      May 19, 2010 at 10:05 am |
    • dave

UM, go live in Pakistan for awhile. You'll acquire an increased appreciation for 'the states' real quick!

Bob. read fingerman's next sentence. Doh!

      May 19, 2010 at 10:13 am |
    • rk

Bob, do you read what people write. The original poster is being sarcastic and if you read more than 2 lines, you would know that.

This is why separation of church/mosque/temple/synagogue and state is necessary.

      May 19, 2010 at 10:24 am |
    • MuddyBuddy

The one thing the USA does best is religious freedom, the USA is pretty much tops in that area, and it is because there is separation of church and state. I believe that is also why the USA is by far the most religious of the Western Nations, and one of the most religious of nations where you have the choice to not to be religious if you chose. Clearly, real faith can only exist in freedom, as soon as you apply the slightest force, faith dies.

      May 19, 2010 at 10:25 am |
    • Really?

      @ MuddyBuddy
That's why certain states in the USA prohibit gay marriage and abortion...because you're allowed to practice whatever religion you want...
