Is Miss USA a Muslim trailblazer?

She's always wanted to be a beauty queen and her dream came true with one of the biggest titles – Miss USA 2010 – Rima Fakih.

As soon as the announcement was made, the labels appeared. She was described as Arab-American, Lebanese-American, Muslim-American. She became the center of controversy overnight after pole dancing photos surfaced and spread across the globe just as fast as an outlandish rumor started by a U.S. neo-conservative blog that she's a spy for the Shiite Lebanese group Hezbollah, designated by the U.S. and E.U. countries as a terrorist group.

It's hard to gauge which claim could possibly hurt the new Miss USA more: the racy pictures or the unfounded rumors alleging she is affiliated with Hezbollah. One thing is certain, the Internet feasted on the story and different groups with different agendas jumped on the opportunity this story afforded them.

Americans do not know where AIPAC and its media are taking them:
First, not all Arabs are muslim: many are Christians
Second: not all Muslims are religious: many Muslims have the faith but not the practice: like Christians
3d: the mf who relate this girl to Hizbullah should shut his mouth
4th: all the Christians who left Iraq and Palestine left becoz of the USA and Israel occupation and not becoz of Muslims.

If a woman is pole dancing, she isn't religious no matter what label she gives herself.

I thought the we here in the US were supposed to have put racial and religious intolerance behind us. Apparently not. Who cares if she's Muslim or Jewish or Christian or Buddhist or Pagan or Hindu or or or....? Sounds like all these people throwing accusations are jealous she won.

Have you not seen the 24 hour fake news reports? when I was over in Iraq and Afghanistan I saw reporters stage their news casts, requesting military to place their vehicles along side occupied building in the middle of the base so it would look like they were in the city. 24 hour news is nothing but gossip because they can't and won't take the time to get the facts before going with something that has the most negative slant, after all that's what gets the most ratings.

CNN has lacked news for years. It's sad how far the network has fallen. "Provocative"? No, I think there are other far more accurate adjectives.

Colin Laney : "An earlier version of this post had a headline we thought was too provocative. " Too provocative? How about racist, sensationalist, and just plain stupid. CNN has no professional standards these days. Tabloid trash.

My thoughts exactly. It's embarrassing to this entire network that this headline would have been allowed to be published, blog or not. Plus it's not like y'all thought it was too provocative in the first place; your readers pointed it out. Don't take credit for that. In the future I hope to see much less biased and sensationalist news out of CNN. I have trusted your network for a long time and it's very unfortunate to have lost that trust over the last several years.

to increase its ratings CNN has become a racist neo-con station worse than FOX. anyone sick and tired of CNN's racism switch to MSNBC. The only fair and balanced station left on TV

Wow CNN, why don't you go ahead and fix this entire piece of tripe? You can start by saying "Our original headline was racist, we thought you were racist too and when we realized you aren't we made it racist-lite and still derogatory -happy now!?". Then go in to the article, delete the whole thing and write, "We are really sorry, really, really sorry. We know we are backward and sensationalist but you have to understand we're CNN and we need ratings".

this is why i've quit watching CNN! after years of being a huge fan of your network, you have slowly morphed into "FOX NEWS LITE"! i don't know WHO you think you're fooling with your talk of being trusted. those days are LONG gone! your thinly veiled right wing positions are getting more nauseating by the minute. ted turner must be freaking out at what you've done to what was once a wonderful news source. all i know is, you're driving people away by the millions with this kind of utter bull! you people make me sick!

THAT'S why your ratings are in the tank!

This story is why we are losing the war on terrorism and depending on t-shirt vendors and Dutch filmakers to save us as we did in Times Square and on Christmas Day in Detroit. You are a NEWS organization report the facts. Her relatives ARE Hezbollah which she and they say support Hezbollah who is using IED's to kill American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Dearborn Michigan is the Wiziristan of the USA -Google these people and see what you find: Nada Nadim Prouty and Talal Chahine -1 a Hezbollah mole in the FBI and CIA the other celebrated 9/11 as it happened and supports Hezbollah. The pagaent was fixed and she and anything she is a part of should be BOYCOTTED. Jihad Rima-the Hezbollah Princess.
