Burqa ban passes French lower house overwhelmingly

France's lower house of parliament Tuesday overwhelmingly passed a ban on any veils that cover the face - including the burqa, the full-body covering worn by some Muslim women. The vote was 335 to 1.

The measure must still go to the French Senate before it becomes law. The Senate is expected to vote on it in the week of September 20.

Music festival brings world faiths together

Five times a day, from the tops of mosques across the ancient city of Fez, Morocco, the soothing voices of muezzins calls Muslims to prayer.

But each summer during the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music those sacred chants in the majority Muslim country mingle with the sounds of music from a variety of other faiths and cultures including Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist and Christian.

My Take: Why Christians should pray for Christopher Hitchens

Perhaps you’ve heard of Christopher Hitchens. He is a British writer and cultural commentator who lives and works in Washington, D.C. For decades now, he has been observing the political/societal scene and writing about it in a particularly insightful, witty and acerbic manner.

Early in his career, he was something of a Trotskyite, but in the years following September 11, 2001, he emerged as a strong advocate of the Iraq war and, much to the chagrin of his colleagues on the left, a supporter of George W. Bush. He is best known, certainly, for his recent contributions as a critic of religion. His book "God is Not Great: Why Religion Poisons Everything" appeared a couple of years ago and proved to be a bestseller.

Researchers unearth oldest written document ever found in Jerusalem

Archeologists have discovered an ancient clay chip that bears the oldest text ever found in Jerusalem, Israeli researchers said Monday.

The tiny clay fragment, dating back some 3,400 years, is covered with cuneiform script.
