Liberal Catholics aim to raise $500,000 for Congress fights

Catholics United aims to raise $500,000 to support congressional candidates who backed health care reform, the liberal-leaning Catholic advocacy group announced Wednesday.

It's planning to pour money into four races in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia to start, and it hopes to widen its efforts as November's elections approach.

The group will defend Democratic Reps. John Boccieri of Ohio, Kathy Dahlkemper of Pennsylvania, Steve Driehaus of Ohio and Tom Perriello of Virginia.

Saddest day of the Jewish year

CNN photojournalist Avi Kanner and producer Izzy Lemberg filed this report from Jerusalem about a day of mourning on Monday:

It's called the saddest day of the Jewish calendar. On Tisha B’ Av - Hebrew for the 9th day of the month of Av on the Hebrew calendar - Jews mark the anniversary of the destruction of the first and second biblical Temples in Jerusalem.

According to Jewish tradition, both temples were destroyed on the 9th of Av - the first, King Solomon's temple, by the Babylonians in 586 BC; the second, rebuilt on the same spot, by the Romans in 70 AD.

Haggard back in the pulpit

Ted Haggard is back preaching, and his new church is growing.  CNN affiliate KUSA sat down with Haggard this weekend.  One the most interesting responses from Haggard:  "I lost my faith to the point I didn't think God could use a person like me."

Simple computer program decodes lost biblical language

From our partner Mother Nature Network:

A project led by professor Regina Barzilay of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology may be the first to show how ancient, lost or unknown languages can be decoded using a computer program, according to National Geographic.

The MIT team was able to decode the "lost language" of Ugaritic, an ancient Semitic language used in Old Testament times, using no more computing power than that of a laptop. The program took no longer than a few hours to link most Ugaritic symbols to their Hebrew equivalents.
