Pope defrocks U.S. priest over abuse allegations

Pope Benedict XVI has defrocked an Ohio priest after allegations he sexually abused a child, the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown said Friday.

Thomas Crum was removed from active ministry last year "in response to credible accusations of sexual misconduct involving a minor," the diocese said in a written statement.

The Vatican, reeling from allegations in recent years, released tougher rules earlier this month aimed at stopping the abuse of children by its priests.

"The Vatican has notified the Diocese of Youngstown that Pope Benedict XVI has accepted the request of Thomas Crum and removed him from the priesthood," the diocese said.

Catholicmom .... your full of garbage ..... your own words define you... I lookewd up the verses you quoted earler and youre words appear to use scripture incorrectly to make your point.... and its obvious

    Marys prayer?

    You say.....
In asking saints in heaven to pray for us, we follow Paul’s instructions: "I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone," for "this is good and pleasing to God our Savior" (1 Tim. 2:1–4). We can pray for members of God’s family in this life and in the life to come. Nothing can separate us from the members of Christ’s body, death has no power.

    The verses says....
1I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone— 2for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

One mediator? nothing about the pope or a priest or mary.....

    Saints prayer?

    You say
All members of the Body of Christ are called to help one another through prayer. Mary’s prayers are especially effective on our behalf because of her relationship with her Son (John 2:1–11). She takes our prayers and makes them her own and presents them to Jesus Christ on our behalf.

    The verses say
3When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine."
4"Dear woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied, "My time has not yet come." 5His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."

I think Jesus said Woman... not mother, not queen of the universe.... her intercession was more like a woman....

Catholic Church is the kingdom of God.
The Catholic Church is the Kingdom of God.
"He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of His Beloved Son, in whom we have our redemption, the remission of our sins."
    Colossians 1:13-14

Nothing about the church other than more wild suppositions to support a falllacy

    Nachooooo libre,

Take it one step at a time…..
Yes, Mary is the Mother of Jesus. Isn’t Jesus God? You have to say, “Yes”, if you are a Christian. If you cannot say “Yes”, then you are not a Christian, and you have the right to your assertions just as Nestorius had. It is just Heresy to go down that path.

Mary is the mother of God lol NO THAT'S just sad that is one of those things your people started......What does it say that we have to believe inother to go to heaven "is he God or is he the son of God" but i've debated the Yeshua being God thing thing. Don't get me wrong Catholic Mom i love you but for someone to stand up for this church Blindly and don't even know there own history it's a shame.

      Iceman 6161,

      Here is some history………..

Firstly, I do not understand why you object to Mary having the title of ‘Mother of God’. All Christians believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that He is also God. Jesus is also the Son of Mary. To call Mary the “Mother of Jesus” and yet refuse to call her “Mother of God” is to deny Jesus is truly and fully God.

Patriarch Nestorius preached that Mary was not Mother of God but the Council of Ephesus in 431AD condemned this Heresy because the Gospels tell us that the Word did not UNITE with man but was MADE man. ‘The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.’(John 1:14). Jesus was not two persons, the Son of God and the Son of Mary, but one Person, the Son of God AND Mary. If this were not so, his death could not have saved us.

Nestorius’ ecclesial community went by the wayside…………..

Attempts to downgrade Mary always lead to a downgrading of the full divinity of Jesus.

Mary is the mother of Jesus... your sematics are blaspemous..... mary isnt queen of the universe or any of that nonsense ... she was chosen vessel by God..... calling her the Mother of God is extrmenly blasphemous in that your are equating her at a same level as God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.....

  8. Reality

To keep the world from total anarchy, we must throw stones but we must be consistent in our stone throwing so one more time:

FEAR, SHAME and GUILT and COVER IT ALL UP!!! The RCC is not the only one suffering from these horrors.

Obviously ordination in any religion is not assurance of good behavior !!!!!

Neither is coronation!!! e.g. Henry VIII, King David.

Neither is marriage as 50% of those men convicted of p-dophilia are married.

Neither is being elected president of the USA!! e.g. Billy "I did not have s-x with that girl" Clinton, John "Marilyn Monroe" Kennedy"

Neither is possessing super athletic skill!!! e.g. Tiger "I am so sorry for getting caught" Woods

Neither is being an atheist or pagan since p-dophilia is present in all walks of life.

If someone is guilty of a crime in this litany of "neithers" they should or should have been penalized as the law dictates to include jail terms for pedophiliacs (priests, rabbis, evangelicals, boy scout leaders, married men/women), divorce for adultery (Clinton, Kennedy, Woods), jail terms for obstruction of justice (Clinton, Cardinal Law) and the death penalty or life in prison for murder ("Kings David and Henry VIII).

great point... lets start with the thousands of priests that have been able to aviod the law.... people are sick of it, 8,000 convicted, 3 billion paid in out of court settlements..... go ahead and find 10 boy scout leaders ... oh yeah they will be in jail... while the priests are shipped off to other places to prey on kids again..... or they are sent to a club ped for priest that the church has created.... look it up...

The team reported that 10,667 people in the US had made allegations of child sexual abuse between 1950 and 2002 against 4,392 priests (about 4% of all 109,694 priests who served during the time period covered by the study).

The surveys filtered information provided from diocesan files on each priest accused of sexual abuse and on each of the priest's victims to the research team so that they did not have access to the names of the accused priests or the dioceses where they worked. The dioceses were encouraged to issue reports of their own based on the surveys that they had completed. Of the 4,392 priests who were accused, police were contacted regarding 1,021 individuals and of these, 384 were charged resulting in 252 convictions and 100 prison sentences; 3,300 were not investigated because the allegations were made after the accused priest had died.

Overall, a human and costly tragedy that probably will finally bring down not only the RCC but all religions because said religions are human-based and therefore flawed.

  9. Erin (a fellow Catholic)

I am a Christian, and I am also a Catholic. I can honestly say that the sexual abuse committed by false priests is appalling. But it does not cause me to loose faith in the Church, why you might ask? Because I am not following a man or a human organization. I am following Jesus Christ. Christ himself said that the "wheat and the weeds" wood grow together, he also warned that wold like men in sheeps clothing would infiltrate the Church and terrorize it. Christ step up the Catholic Church when he said in Matthew 16 "Thou art Peter (which means "rock" in aramaic) and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it". Christ also commissioned Peter in the last chapter of John to "feed my lambs". Through out the New Testament Peter is clearly the human leader of the 1st century church. The Book of Acts makes statements such as "And Peter stood up and said...", "Peter and the other 12". In the later part of the First Century the Early Church fathers recognized Peters position as set up by Christ Jesus. That Church with an unbroken line of leaders affectionately called "Pope" meaning 'father' (Just as the Apostle says that he has become a "father" to many Christians.) Was called The Catholic Church. Catholic meaning "Universal" it was for everyone, male, female, gentile, and Jew. Jesus Church is truly Universal. The Catholic Church has been in a constant battle while on earth. First against the Hebrew people who wanted to destroy it, Then the Romans who also were bent on its annihilation, then barbarians, then apostates from within itself who sought its ruin. But no man or nation has been able to fight against The Universal (Catholic) Church that Jesus Christ founded while on earth. ("And the Gates of Hell shall not prevail against it"). Does this mean that she is perfect? No. Imperfect and yes sometimes wicked men have sought to hijack the Church and use it for their own means. Yet Christ faithful to his word has continuously protected, reformed, healed, and lead his Church. Jesus even said that wicked men would infiltrate his Church and cause harm. The Bible even tells us that when the Judgement begins it will start with His House the Church first. She will need to be cleansed. Read the Old Testament, God's people are human- even though they were his people it is filled with stories of imperfect men doing bad things, yet the point is always how God intervenes to bring out the good. Same with The Church today. With the Sexual abuse being committed today this is not a catholic only problem. Other organizations and churches are also seeing this horrible tragedy. The greatest enemy of the Church at the moment are not from the outside, but just as Christ said are coming from within. Yet as my Lord Jesus said "The Gates of HELL Shall Not Prevail Against it" and I trust my Lord Jesus to continue as he has done for 2,000 yrs to guide, protect, discipline, heal, and Shepard his Holy Catholic (Universal) Church.

while your telling people to read the old testament..... i suggest you learn some hebrew and greek.... then read it all...
the meanings, syntax, phrasings HAVE NOTHING to do with peter being the start of the church,.... the rock/faith is the foundation of Christs church .... not Christ setting up the catholic church as an organization.... i have been to the catholic church many times..... i have been excluded from communion.... i have friends who have been asked for penence payments when loved ones died,..... my name in many rc church windows throughout the east coast..... if the catholic church went totally away, would it change your faith in God? it shouldnt but sadly i imagine thats where yours lies....

I love how catholics always point to their INTERPRETATION of Matthew as the basis for their belief that they have the 'only' church that was sanctioned by jesus. You've got to have quite an imagination to be able to read such a specific outcome from such a vague statement. It is also interesting that in that same discussion jesus says to Peter, "Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men." So, you are saying that jesus built his church upon a man he calls satan?

The catholic church is very good at taking items and spinning them for their own benefit. The church has been doing this for centuries. They've also created their own addendum to the bible (catechism). The reality is that ALL organized religion was created by men to maintain power and control over the people. The catholic church has been excellent at doing just that for centuries.

Thank you for your post and great faith!
As I read your post, I was reminded of ‘Ephesians 5:25-27. (25)"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the Church, and delivered Himself up for her, (26) that He might sanctify her, cleansing her in the bath of water by means of The Word; (27) IN ORDER THAT HE MIGHT PRESENT TO HIMSELF THE CHURCH IN ALL HER GLORY, NOT HAVING SPOT OR WRINKLE OR ANY SUCH THING, BUT THAT SHE MIGHT BE HOLY AND WITHOUT BLEMISH."’
Ephesians 5:25-27 is telling us that the Church is without spot, wrinkle or any such thing. How do we know this is the Catholic Church that is being referred to? There was no other church in Christian history at the time of this writing. So none of the 30-40,000 ecclesial communities today that call themselves Christian cannot claim to be the Church that the Bible speaks of. The Bible also tells us that the Church is the pillar and foundation of Truth.

So it is not the Church which is evil, but human beings inside and outside the Church who are the sinners; Jesus Christ founded His Church FOR sinners; this is one of the reasons He became Incarnate. All sinners need the Church which is without spot, wrinkle or any such thing.

      Dont Distort,

So often today people like to presume they know the Truth but in reality, satan is the one encouraging such distorted notions.

Jesus was speaking to Peter saying his human way of thinking was not God’s way of thinking. Peter’s refusal to accept Jesus’ predicted suffering and death is seen as a satanic attempt to deflect Jesus from His God-appointed course.

When Peter is the one who recognized Jesus as the messiah, Jesus told Peter he was blessed because only His Father in Heaven could have revealed it to him, not a flesh and blood person, so Jesus told Peter He was going to build His Church upon this rock [Peter] and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.

Jesus began to show his disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised. And, Peter, being human, did not want to hear of such a thing. Satan would have loved it if Jesus would not suffer for man-kind because then the gates of Heaven would remain closed. Jesus used those words ‘get behind me, Satan,’ because that is what Satan would want--but He was not saying that Peter was Satan or a devil or any such thing.
      Please, don't distort.

      catholic mom,

You presume to know the truth as well. You believe your faith (they call it faith because it can not be proven) is the truth. The reality is that your faith is just that, faith. It is not absolute truth, you can not prove it.

I did not distort, I merely put into context the scripture you quoted and singled out. Showing that in nearly the same breath jesus pointed out that Peter was worldly. The catholic church has 'interpreted' the 'upon this rock' scripture to brainwash and control it's followers.

There is no proof that anything the catholic church teaches is true and factual. They use their own documents to support their own claims in their own documents. The churches arguments are a fallacy, and unprovable. The TRUTH is that you can not say that what you believe is factual, it is only faith. For you to state that your religious (faith) views are the truth without providing a valid logical argument to prove them is DISTORTION.

These believers could be from a number of what you called ecclesiatical communities of Christ.... but all the people in any single one of them are not the church..... What I would like to know is if you really think the Catholics are the only one? Due to your psychodelic version of the origin of the church and what the church is ( in your reality ), I imagine you think the catholics have the only key... thus the exclusions to non catholics.... nachooooo libre,

God would not want His Church to be only known to Himself. Why would He keep it a secret from His people? How would people know where to go to receive Sacraments, [Jesus Christ’s instituted means of graces to help sustain us along our journey to our final goal]? Non-Catholics exclude themselves from the Church by their own freewill. They have been doing it since the 1500’s and they keep breaking-off from themselves, over and over again because they are unhappy, knowing something is wrong. Now they want to say, ‘Down with religion completely’ so they each can be their own pope, but so far they still hang on to their Bible [which is a derivative of the Catholic Bible]. I just wonder how long it will take for them in that state of affairs to realize that the Church that they hate and the Church that the world hates, just happens to be Jesus Christ’s Church. [The world hated Christ first, and now His Bride.]

The Church is without stain, wrinkle, or any such thing; it is the Bride of Christ. People are not without stain, wrinkle, or such as we are sinners and are in need of a Savior….Jesus Christ’s Bride we are not….not anyone from the Catholic Church or ecclesial communities can claim to be the Bride of Christ.

The Bible says the Church is the pillar and foundation of Truth. Not anyone from the Catholic Church or any of the ecclesial communities can claim to be the ‘pillar and foundation of Truth’.

Yes, the Key was given to Peter and has been handed down throughout history to all the Popes. Jesus Christ didn’t just hand over the key and say, ‘You are on your own from here on out’, no, He said He would send the Paraclete [Holy Spirit] to guide and guard His Church so that Truth would not be tampered with to suit what man would like to think is Truth as time goes on. Truth cannot change, it can only be more fully understood. If man were the pillar and foundation of Truth, who do you think holds the Key? Should we look to you….your neighbor….or the Catholic Church?

You continue to use the teachings of the catholic church to try to justify the teachings of the cathilic church; as if they were factual truths instead of statements from men without support. NO ONE has ever been able to offer REAL PROOF for any of the things you are stating, they can ONLY offer the information that the catholic church itself has created to justify it's own existence. It says it is because it says it is...a pure fallacy. A distortion...

If one uses the precept of Love for humankind as decision making, it is not clear, then, that the Papacy has to go? That the church ought to be put back in the hands of the lay people – those wanting a closer life with God? Again, I see a Good Old Boys club at the Vatican living out medieval principles rooted in "Oh, it's always been that way". Let's not forget the Pope and his minions are just humans. His actual name is Joey Ratzinger. He has sat on committees that have, over time, covered up many abuse cases, and ignored a bunch. Check it out at ny times, etc. The book of Mark talks about people like the Pope (and every day hypocrites), Mark 7:6-8. Check it out. Just because "It's always been that way" does NOT make something right.

There is a difference between the Catholic Church (Big "C") and the catholic church (Little "C"). The little C church is in our hearts, minds, and is Christ centered. It makes you wanna do nice things for your neighbors, loved ones, the poor, etc. The BIG C Catholic Church, run by misogynistic old men in a shroud of secrecy, so be closed down, so the laypeople can have their church back. Unfortunately, this will probably not occur. But, in the end times, (as we are seeing now), the erroneous, vile, corrupt ways of old men that live at the Vatican and call the shots are being exposed for what they are (Thank God). I don't see any reference to a "Pope" or anything like that in this old book I have, "The Bible".

      nachooooo libre,
The family of God includes all members of the Church, whether on earth, in heaven, or in purgatory. Members in purgatory are being cleansed by God’s love, for no unclean thing can enter heaven. Purgatory does not cleanse mortal sin from the soul only venial sin.

All members of the Body of Christ are called to help one another through prayer. Mary’s prayers are especially effective on our behalf because of her relationship with her Son (John 2:1–11). She takes our prayers and makes them her own and presents them to Jesus Christ on our behalf.

Oh, your link is by a very neutral party as well. A group of apologists in training put that information together using catholic dogma and tradition. No wonder they came to a conclusion that supports the catholic church.

There is ZERO independent information that confirms that one form of christianity was preferred over another, and ZERO independent proof that catholicism was 'the church' that jesus founded. Catholics ALWAYS point to the documents they've created, or their interpretation of the bible to support their argument.

You can't provide ONE piece of independent (not created by the church) information that isn't vague and can be interpreted numerous ways that proves the catholic church is "the real church".

You really need to work on your literacy skills and putting together coherent cognitive thoughts. Your arguments fail mostly because they just don't make sense...

@david there is nothing in the bible that talks about a Pope. If so then there should be only one (PETER).........shut down.........

When Jesus Christ commissioned Peter and the Apostles to go out to all nations teaching them all that He taught them and Baptise everyone.....how were they to do that if the succession of Popes was not also commissioned? How shocking that Jesus Christ would ask someone to do such a task without a means of succeeding! God doesn't work that way with us. He knows our limitations and so has provided the Church, His Bride, with all it needs to succeed. It is His promise!

re catholicmon.... i would worry about having ggod seats on the hell train..... you just replaced the Holy Spirit with an unholy organizational leader called the pope..... that is blasphemy of the worst kind.... btw praying to mary or praying to the saints is idoltry and paganism. .... and the way the priests, pope and bishops dress draws toward themselves which Christ also warned against.....

      nachooooo libre,
Your concern about the way priests dress.....

John 19:23-24 23When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four shares, a share for each soldier. They also took his tunic, but the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top down. 24 So they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it will be,” in order that the passage of scripture might be fulfilled [that says]: “They divided my garments among them, and for my vesture they cast lots.” This is what the soldiers did.

Jesus is the High Priest, once a priest, always a priest. How was Jesus to continue His Priesthood? By the laying on of hands starting with the Apostles up to this present day, the Catholic Priest stands in for Jesus, Personna Christi. Jesus wore a seamless tunic, so does a Priest when performing the Sacrifice of the Mass…..which isn’t a new sacrifice but a making present the one sacrifice that Jesus made.

So, you can see the purpose of the tunic.

Forgive me Dont Distort and others on my verbal lambashing but I have engaged in protestant discussions in the past and more likely than not people of the protestant faith don't acknowledge catholicism as a real religion. What has been racist about the church? The difference here is that we have learned unlike the KKK, WASPS, White Nationalists, and other organizations. I could go on about how protestant presidents actually used two atom bombs on innocent civilians as well in WWII and killed them in the name of the Lord too. The crusades in my estimation were more monarchy related not so much catholicism related. The enquisitions are blown out of proportion and valor and such manly garbage at the time of zeal were over blown by the ego of man. The original pecepts of the only church were tarnished by men not the church's image. Anti-semitic and anti-muslim in official teachings like the caticism? Can you prove that it's in the catechism today? No, that means its no longer relavent anymore and won't rear its ugly head anymore and history cannot be defended by the brutality of men. By your logic of the enquisitions right the puritans in Salem, Massachusetts were angels correct? Fact is that catholics held slaves typically the shortest amount of times than protestant Alabama or Virginia counterparts and prominent note is found about this as well.
I'm sorry about the typos even though I don't check my posts for typos ever. The Great Society was enspired by John F. Kennedy so read a book man. Civil Rights Act was crafted by him like that of other Johnson works before hand just that Johnson was a political pawn that is all. He was part of your democratic conservative batty southern brothers who loved the tenth admendment to defend segregation. I've graduated from high school and hold a college degree in fact, so maybe ask me sometime before insulting me? Typical protestant rubbish from typical trashy mouthed people. I merely insulted southern protestants cause they need to remove the plank out of their eye before jumping on us your supposed christian brothers. I don't feel the love from you protestants and quite frankly I'd rather not have anything to do with you at all. The same goes for Ted Kennedy and his radical liberals in my church cause they aren't following the doctrine of the church. I think our reputation has been damaged by radical reformers trying to destroy religion. The Bible states about this "United we are strong and divided we will fall" like a House Divided by Abraham Lincoln. Yeah, it makes me feel better denouncing baptist cause of my family's involvement with the KKK to become a catholic and the hate by socialism and such from conservative uncompassionant individuals on the moral question of social justice issues. You care about abortion moral impairatives but don't care what happens to the child future would be adult at all. The same goes for many things unless you directly benefit from like our massive military to national security that has brought up the debt even higher. Thank you southern conservatives as well for your regressive 18th century outlook on life as well and this coming from a former conservative baptist to a moderate democratic precatholic who denounces protestantism for what it is a cult of uncheck moral imparative. A protestant refermation belief in adultry, destruction of marriage (King Henry and Luthar), puritanical dogma, literalist fundamentalist and other garbage. Jesus Christ didn't write the Bible his disciples did and therefore I conclude that most people in the world are illiterate and will be saved by the preaching and teaching of the only one real church of catholicism founded in Rome, Italy by Peter the first bishop of Rome.
