Franklin Graham: Obama born a Muslim, now a Christian

Evangelical leader Franklin Graham, son of famed presidential religious adviser Billy Graham, said Thursday that he believes President Barack Obama is a Christian, but that the president was born a Muslim because of his father's religious beliefs.

Asked by CNN Chief National Correspondent John King if he had any doubts about Obama's Christian faith, Graham, who has made controversial comments about Islam in the past, said the president's background is fueling the false perception that he is a Muslim.

The people posting out-of-context Koran quotes – that they got from some chain e-mail sent to them one time – in order to prove how evil Islam is are the first people who would scream that Bible quotes used to show how evil Christianity is were taken out of context. Oh well.

"Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones." Psalm 137:9
"And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of the LORD: and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth." Zechariah 13:3
"But if this thing be true, and the tokens of virginity be not found for the damsel: Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father's house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you." Deuteronomy 22:20-21
"When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou; And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them: " Deuteronomy 7:1-2
"But of the cities of these people, which the LORD thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth: But thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee: " Deuteronomy 20:6-17.

I could go on, but I'll leave time for the people above, who were doing the same thing with the Koran, to laughingly begin to explain how "that's different."

the Koran also encourages the believers to wholeheartedly indulge in Charity and Fasting. To exhibit qualities of self control and self sacrifice. And most importantly to work for ones salvation (smile), it will not be handed to you on a plate simply because you believe a Man-God came to earth on a space ship and died for your sinful behavior.

    ------
[30:38] Therefore, you shall give the relatives their rightful share (of charity), as well as the poor, and the traveling alien. This is better for those who sincerely seek GOD's pleasure; they are the winners.
    -----–
[14:31] Exhort My servants who believed to observe the Correct Prayers (Salat), and to give (to charity) from our provisions to them, secretly and publicly, before a day comes where there is neither trade, nor nepotism.
    -----–
[2:280] If the debtor is unable to pay, wait for a better time. If you give up the loan as a charity, it would be better for you, if you only knew.
    -----–
[2:274] Those who give to charity night and day, secretly and publicly, receive their recompense from their Lord; they will have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve.
    -----–
[2:267] O you who believe, you shall give to charity from the good things you earn, and from what we have produced for you from the earth. Do not pick out the bad therein to give away, when you yourselves do not accept it unless your eyes are closed. You should know that Allah is Rich, Praiseworthy.
    -----–
[2:215] "They ask you about giving: say, "The charity you give shall go to the parents, the relatives, the orphans, the poor, and the traveling alien." Any good you do, God is fully aware thereof."
    -----–

Obama may be a "professing Christian". If this be the case, he is a tare among the wheat and will be separated and burned at the harvest. But he sure does act like a tare. Franklin Graham is a stand-up guy, he's probably helped his fellow man, both Christian and non-Christian alike more than you losers who are throwing stones at him here. I'm curious as to why so many atheists on a belief blog?

I appreciate Graham's remark. As a child Obama had no choice. As a man he chose Jesus....Islam is a hateful religion and we are hated by them....wake up America....

    KORAN commands to kill infidels:
Allah is an enemy to unbelievers. – Sura 2:98
On unbelievers is the curse of Allah. – Sura 2:161
Slay them wherever ye find them and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution is worse than slaughter. – 2:191
Fight against them until idolatry is no more and Allah's religion reigns supreme. (different translation: ) Fight them until there is no persecution and the religion is God's entirely. – Sura 2:193 and 8:39
Fighting is obligatory for you, much as you dislike it. – 2:216
(different translation: ) Prescribed for you is fighting, though it is hateful to you.
    ..... martyrs.... Enter heaven – Surah 3:140-43
If you should die or be killed in the cause of Allah, His mercy and forgiveness would surely be better than all they riches they amass. If you should die or be killed, before Him you shall all be gathered. – 3:157-8
You must not think that those who were slain in the cause of Allah are dead. They are alive, and well-provided for by their Lord. – Surah 3:169-71
Let those fight in the cause of God who sell the life of this world for the hereafter. To him who fights in the cause of God, whether he is slain or victorious, soon we shall give him a great reward. – Surah 4:74
Those who believe fight in the cause of God, and those who reject faith fight in the cause of evil. – 4:76
But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever you find them. – 4:89
Therefore, we stirred among them enmity and hatred, which shall endure till the Day of Resurrection, when Allah will declare to them all that they have done. – 5:14
O believers, take not Jews and Christians as friends; they are friends of each other. Those of you who make them his friends is one of them. God does not guide an unjust people. – 5:54
Make war on them until idolatry is no more and Allah's religion reigns supreme – 8:39
O Prophet! Exhort the believers to fight. If there are 20 steadfast men among you, they shall vanquish 200; and if there are a hundred, they shall rout a thousand unbelievers, for they are devoid of understanding. – 8:65
It is not for any Prophet to have captives until he has made slaughter in the land. – 8:67
Allah will humble the unbelievers. Allah and His apostle are free from obligations to idol-worshipers. Proclaim a woeful punishment to the unbelievers. – 9:2-3
When the sacred months are over, slay the idolaters wherever you find them. Arrest them, besiege them, and lie in ambush everywhere for them. – 9:5
Believers! Know that idolators are unclean. – 9:28
Fight those who believe neither in God nor the Last Day, nor what has been forbidden by God and his messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, even if they are People of the Book, until they pay the tribute and have been humbled. – 9:29 (another source: ) The unbelievers are impure and their abode is hell. (another source: ) Humiliate the non-Muslims to such an extent that they surrender and pay tribute.
Whether unarmed or well-equipped, march on and fight for the cause of Allah, with your wealth and your persons. – 9:41
O Prophet! Make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites. Be harsh with them. Their ultimate abode is hell, a hapless journey's end. – 9:73
Allah has purchased of their faithful lives and worldly goods, and in return has promised them the Garden. They will fight for His cause, kill and be killed. – 9:111
Fight unbelievers who are near to you. 9:123 (different translation:
Believers! Make war on the infidels who dwell around you. Let them find harshness in you. (another source: ) Ye who believe! Murder those of the disbelievers....
As for those who are slain in the cause of Allah, He will not allow their works to perish. He will vouchsafe them guidance and ennoble their state; He will admit them to the Paradise All Unbelievers are enemies of Allah and they will roast in hell. – 41:14
He has made known to them. – 10:4-15
Allah has cursed the unbelievers and proposed for them a blazing hell. – 33:60
When you meet the unbelievers, smite their necks, then when you have made wide slaughter among them, tie fast the bonds, then set them free, either by grace or ransom, until the war lays down its burdens. – 47:4
(different translation: ) When you meet the unbelievers in the battlefield, strike off their heads, and when you have laid them low, bind your captives firmly.
Those who are slain in the way of Allah – he will never let their deeds be lost. Soon will he guide them and improve their condition, and admit them to the Garden, which he has announced for them. – 47:5
Muslims are harsh against the unbelievers, merciful to one another. – 48:25
Muhammad is Allah's apostle. Those who follow him are ruthless to the unbelievers but merciful to one another. Through them, Allah seeks to enrage the unbelievers. – 48:29
Prophet! Make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites and deal sternly with them. Hell shall be their home, evil their fate. – 66:9
The unbelievers among the People of the Book and the pagans shall burn forever in the fire of hell. They are the vilest of all creatures. – 98:51
Fight them so that Allah may punish them at your hands, and put them to shame. (verse cited in Newsweek 2/11/02)

KORAN promises of houris in heaven:
Single-minded slaves of Allah... will be honored in the Gardens of delight, on couches facing one another; A cup from a gushing spring is brought round for them, white, delicious to the drinkers, wherein there is no headache nor are they made mad thereby. And with them are those of modest gaze, with lovely eyes, pure as they were hidden eggs. – Surah 37:40-49
Lo, for those who ward off evil is a happy journey's end, Gardens of Eden, whereof the gates are opened for the, wherein, reclining, they call for plenteous fruit and cool drink therein. And with them are those of modest gaze, companions. This it is that ye are promised for the Day of Reckoning. – 38:50-54
Lo! Those who kept their duty will be in a place secure, amid gardens and water-springs, attired in silk and silk embroidery, facing one another.... And we shall wed them unto fair ones with wide, lovely eyes. They call therein for every fruit in safety. They taste not death therein, save the first death. And He hath saved them from the doom of hell, a bounty from thy Lord. That is the supreme triumph. – 44:51-57
Lo! Those who kept their duty dwell in gardens and delight... reclining on ranged couches. And we wed them unto fair ones with wide, lovely eyes... and we provide them with fruit and meat such as they desire.... – 52:17-22
...Reclining upon couches lined with silk brocade, the fruit of both the gardens near to hand.... Therein are those of modest gaze, whom neither man nor jinni will have touched before them.... – 55:54-56
Those are they who will be brought nigh, in gardens of delight... reclining therein face to face. There wait on them immortal youths... and fair ones with wide, lovely eyes, like unto hidden pearls, reward for what they used to do.... Lo! We have created them a creation, and made them virgins, lovers, friends. – 56:11-37
(Different translation) Companions with beautiful, big and lustrous eyes... virgin-pure and undefiled.

    Koran "sharia" punishments:
As for the man who steals and the woman who steals, cut off their hands as punishment for what they have earned, an exemplary punishment from Allah. – Surah 5:38

Wanda, the Koran is no more hateful than the Bible:

If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.

      Leviticus 20:13

If a man beats his male or female slave with a rod and the slave dies as a direct result, he must be punished, but he is not to be punished if the slave gets up after a day or two, since the slave is his property.

      Exodus 21:20-21

      Deuteronomy 20:16–17 (NIV)

16 However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. 17 Completely destroy them—the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites—as the Lord your God has commanded you.

the houris the Koran promises in heaven look remarkably like the whorees that are on TV all the time in christiandom. basically there are no whorees or houris in christian heaven. which is why christiandom is drowning in whorees in this life. the wise christian is cognizant of the fact that if he does not treat his women like whorees in this life, he may go empty handed for eternity. the muslim on the other hand, knows that if he treats his women with respect and dignity, its not an opportunity lost, there will be plenty of houris waiting for him in the muslim heaven!

I thought Franklin Graham NAILED IT!!! He said that the Pres. says he is a born again Christian, so he didn't have any reason not to believe him. If you know the love of God you don't want to say hateful things about other people. You want the best for them.

    Mr. Graham,
your interview with cnn was an opportunity lost and that is sad. because u chose to play politics rather than speak the truth of the gospel ... remember John 3:16....remember the ..WHOSOEVER part??... did u misspeak or do u really think there is a stain that the precious blood of Jesus cannot cleanse? u mean unless u were born a christian, u conversion is suspect??...

Melony – Mr Graham did say that the blood of Jesus can cleanse all sin. He said that the President had a Muslim father and that President Obama made a profession of faith and accepted Christ. Nowhere in that interview did he say that if you were born into a Musliim family that you could not be saved...Where are you guys getting this...go back and listen, Please!

Mr. Graham was referring to the Muslim perspective; as he said, "In the Muslim religion..." the seed is passed down through the father. I do not believe he at all suggested that this is what the Bible teaches.

melony: View the tape first. If you do you will see Graham said nothing that can be criticized. In fact, he should be commended for not trying to Judge Obama. He said we should take him at his word. What more should he say?

    Mr. Graham?
Really? the seed is passed from father to son???? and u are an evangelist? Read ur bible again please. U had more respect to politics and to man than to the Word of God. U sat under the tutelage of Billy Graham for so long and still know nothing of the gospel of grace? What about the precious blood of Jesus????

actually his father was once a muslim but then became an atheist, i know to some people that is worse, i hate those logical atheist who only believe in facts. it is not his background that has more people believing he is a muslim then a year ago. it is the constant jabs he takes from rush limbaugh, glen beck and others. is it really necessary to always refer to the president by his middle name?

In general, Franklin Graham insists on focusing on the differences between the messengers of both Muslim and Christian religions rather than on the universal truths embodied in both of their teachings. In particular, he totally ignores most of the teachings of the Christian faith he claims to represent (ie "judge not...love our neighbor...not bearing false witness...) Further, he believes that simple opinion can force others to ignore the constitution! Since he seems intelligent, his ignorance on these matters can only be attributed to a stubborn, self-righteousness and a deliberate choice to remain ignorant.

  13. A Protest To CNN

As a long-time blogger, I protest, in the strongest possible terms, the misguided erasure of vast numbers of posts in this belief blog.
A person or persons unknown have gone through the past week and have deleted vast swaths of posts.
If you are a blogger who has contributed in the past week, I invite you to go and see if what you wrote is still there.
Whether it was the moderators, or somebody "flagging" every post they didn't like, the fact remains that this is outrageous behavior.
Freedom of the press and speech don't really matter I guess. Expect this protest to disappear as well (if it even gets past the moderator filters)
    Bad functionality or deliberate act?
I repeat: IF ANYONE HAS POSTED IN THE PAST WEEK - GO AND LOOK> YOUR POST MAY ALREADY BE GONE.
How can anybody justify such immature behavior?
So much for cnn. I had hoped for better from a member of the Fourth Estate.

Why should it matter what religion the President practices? I would prefer if he did not practice a religion at all (truth is the majority of the highly intelligent (both highly educated and those with a high degree of common sense, we use to call this "street smart") people I know do not believe any more then I do, even the ones that go to religious services. I don't think the Presidents believes in God but he knows he can't get elected in this country unless people believe he believes in God.

Hello. I had opportunity to observe the clip twice of what Mr. Graham had said. I did not hear him say that President Obama is confined to being a Muslim simply because he was born a Muslim. I believe he said our Pres., in the view of Islam, was considered Muslim because he was born as one through his father's "seed," that he had been given a Muslim name, and that the view of many Muslims around the world has been that he is one. These details seem to have some influence on the original topic, that an increased number of Americans see him as Muslim (also due to the Ground Zero controversy.) According the Mr. Graham, our President has "renounced" his Muslim position, and has chosen to "accept Christ" as his Lord and Savior. From my understanding of the teachings of the Bible and of Jesus Christ, this decision ("from the heart") is all it takes to cease being Muslim, or any other religion, and to become a Christian. Thank-you.

    August 20, 2010 at 7:59 am |
    • Joyce

I heard exactly what he said in the same way that you heard it; however, he implied much more than the mere text would show. If he wanted to convey that the President is a Christian, he could have done that with one statement. Instead, he left the distinct impression that the President still has some connection to Muslims by mentioning his birth father, the Muslim belief on the subject, and the statement that Muslims think Obama is "one of them." Further and more importantly, he is intelligent enough to know the power of that implication.

      August 20, 2010 at 11:48 am |
    • Joyce

I just watched the clip for a 4th time and Mr. Graham very clearly intended to leave the impression that there was some doubt as to whether Mr. Obama had indeed converted. When asked if Mr. Graham believed that Obama were a Christian, Graham kept using the word "IF" implying that there still remained some doubt on the subject. I believe that Jesus said, "judge not" so Mr. Graham is not even following his own religion!

That I have to talk about puppy dogs and ice cream when this two faced Evangelical leader goes on TV and spews dribble about our hard working President? Furthermore – who cares if he were Muslim. Can you show me where it says a Muslim man or woman cannot be president? Show mw were it says a Christian must be president? Why haven't we had a female leader yet? A Jew? I think America, with it's very racist past, isn't over it yet. What do you think, Barb?

"Liberal hypocrisy", lady you have no idea what you're talking about. If you want to see real hypocrisy in action, take a look at conservatives, especially the religious ones. These people are prone to lie about everything because they think they can get away with it by simply asking for forgiveness. Damn, this country would be a much better place, if christians were sent to Iraq and Afghanistan to fight these wars, which they support without reservation. Give them guns loaded with blanks and put them out on the battlefield until there's none left.

Or he could add to the comments in this blog and we might see how sound his "doctrine" is under our tender mercies.

I think you need some meds. Go forth and join with the self-medicated community. They've got donuts.

      With sprinkles.

To say that someone can be "born" one religion or the other is to seriously misunderstand the nature of religion. It's like saying someone can be "born" a Red Sox fan. (Actually, bad example... that would help explain the irrational persistence of the phenomenon.)

Good ole Franklin G. Born a rich Christian and now even a richer Christian as he pulls down over $800,000/yr from the various Graham "non-profits" for continuing the Christian mumbo-jumbo of his propheteering/profiteering father Billy G. guidestar.org

FIrst of all (Reality) Where in the Bible does it say Christians cant be rich! He also didnt say born into, he said in that religion, it is custom that the religion is passed down from father to children. If you would have listened you would have heard him also say that the President accepted Christ. Stop adding more to what Mr Graham said. Everything he said was right on target. If you would allow God to open your heart you may see things differently. Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. Without him, You will spend eternity in Hell. If you believe there is no Hell, you better be sure! Once you die, its too late.

Thanks for playing.... Carol has some delightful parting gifts for you...

      Peace.....

      Angela,

So you are saying that 4/5's of the world is going to hell and the 4/5's of those already departed are already there?

Regarding hell, Father Edward Schillebeeckx, the famous contemporary theologian, had a different take on hell. He reasons that the Singularity does not tolerate imperfection in the spiritual realm. Therefore, any soul dying in mortal sin will simply disappear since hell the imperfect state does not exist. (assuming that there is a Singularity and a spiritual realm).

Also, Professor JD Crossan, the famous contemporary historical Jesus exegete, does not believe in the afterlife. See his book Who is Jesus for added commentary.

And the latest astrophysics view of life after death? Tis simply recycling of your body into future bodies and things in a never -ending cycle of birth, death and renewal. No heaven, no hell, no purgatory, no limbo just the beauty of Mother Nature in recycling mode. Here today, gone tomorrow eventually returning as something different, inanimated or animated in the chaotic, stochastic life of the expanding or shrinking universe.

angela – Well, you just sent me to hell alongside most of the Asian continent. Seriously now – you really think all of Japan is going to hell? India too? China, the world's most populous nation? What about marine life and the rest of the animal kingdom? They haven't accepted. Ut oh – are you going to start baptizing frogs and lions and bears and paramecium?

      To Reality;
It takes allot of funding to support the Graham ministries – life-saving, feeding the hungry, clothing, building and education ministries in America, Pakistan, Honduras, Haiti and West Africa. What proof do you have, that $800,000 goes to Franklin Grahams’ pocket? What have you done, to help the poor, hungry, sick and disaster victims?

Billy Graham – an ethical, faithful, wise, man of God, who has practiced and taught the love of God, for almost a century. You write “propheteering/profiteering father Billy G” – what proof or evidence do you have that would support such malicious slanderous words? What “fruit” does your radical atheism produce?

Reality..I live by the word of God and what God says...not Professors or any other teachers, researchers, scientist..etc...We are one nation under GOD!! God is in control of this situation. God is not surprised about anything that is going on in the world today. He isnt sitting on the Throne biting his fingernails worried about what is gonna happen. He has signed off on it already and it is all happening according to HIS purpose. Unless you havent read the Bible....Christians know how this world will end. I really dont sit and worry about what is going to happen tomorrow either. I know that when I lay my head down at night that if I didnt wake in the morning on this earth, then I will awake in Heaven. Where I will be with Jesus and my family members and friends that have gone on before me. Hell does exist. How do I know? Because the Bible says so....I dont need a history lesson to know that. The Bible says that God has revealed himself to all men....It is Gods will that all come to repentance. That is why he sent his son Jesus Christ to die for YOU and me so that we could have eternal life and be with him. He loves you, he loves every person in the world. By the grace of God you can be saved through faith. It is a free gift from God. Romans 10:9 says If thou shalt confess with my mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead thou shalt be saved. Reality......Open your heart, not your mind.

      tagna,

Register for free at guidestar.org and then search for the "non-profits" that Billy and Frankie G run, e.g. :BILLY GRAHAM EVANGELISTIC ASSOCIATION. Click on the Form 990 line to access said form. Scroll down to the compensation entries. Make sure you access all of their "non-profits" as they take a slice from all of them.

Franklin Graham is a nut plain and simple. This so-called man of religion demonstrates everything that is evil about religion. There is absolutely no doubt that more people have been intentionally killed by christians without cause then all of the murders committed by fascist and communist leaders. Jesus Christ would puke in response to seeing those who call themselves true christians today.
