Religious leaders speak out against International Burn a Quran Day

Terry Jones, pastor of the Dove World Outreach Center, stands in front of his church in Gainesville, Florida

Response so far to an event billed as a Gathering for Peace, Understanding and Hope has been "overwhelmingly positive," a minister in Gainesville, Florida, told CNN on Monday. The event is planned in response to a local church's International Burn a Quran Day.

As part of the Gainesville Interfaith Forum - made up of Christians, Muslims, Jews and Hindus - Trinity United Methodist Church will host the event September 10, the night before the planned burning of the Quran.

The nondenominational Dove World Outreach Center said it will host the Quran-burning event on the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks. The group said it will remember 9/11 victims and take a stand against Islam. With promotions on its website and Facebook page, it invites Christians to burn the Muslim holy book at the church from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

"Our hope is that we'll have a thousand people here and there will be 20 people [at the Quran-burning]," Trinity's senior minister Dan Johnson said Monday. Johnson predicted the event would be "multicultural and multifaith." He said he hoped it would inspire a number of people to sign up for the city's interfaith forum. "One member told me after church Sunday that they've never been as proud to be a member of this church as they are now," Johnson said.

In a note posted on his church's website last week, Johnson invited all residents of Gainesville to the counterevent. "We feel compelled to raise our voices to proclaim that the action the Dove World Outreach Center is proposing is absolutely wrong and counter to the life and teaching of the Jesus whom we
love, follow and call savior and Lord."

Wednesday, the city of Gainesville denied a burn permit to the center, said Bob Woods, City of Gainesville spokesman. "It was a question of public safety," said Woods. "The Gainesville Fire Department has notified the center through a letter," he said.

But that isn't stopping the church. The Gainesville Sun reported that, in an e-mail newsletter sent out Wednesday, the church announced: "City of Gainesville denies burn permit - BUT WE WILL STILL BURN KORANS."

Gene Prince, the interim chief of Gainesville Fire Rescue, told the Sun on Wednesday that under the city's fire prevention ordinance, an open burning of books is not allowed. He said if the church goes ahead with its plan, it will be fined. And the church's intentions aren't the issue. "It wouldn't matter what the book is they're burning," Deputy Chief Tim Hayes told the Sun.

"We believe that Islam is of the devil, that it's causing billions of people to go to hell, it is a deceptive religion, it is a violent religion and that is proven many, many times," Dove World Outreach Center Pastor Terry Jones
told CNN's Rick Sanchez last month.

Jones wrote a book titled "Islam is of the Devil," and the church sells coffee mugs and shirts featuring the phrase. On the church's website, a section lists "Ten Reasons to Burn a Koran." The Islamic advocacy group Council on American-Islamic Relations called on Muslims and others to host "Share the Quran" dinners to educate the public during the monthlong fast of Ramadan beginning in August. In a news release, the group announced a campaign to give out 100,000 copies of the Quran to local, state and national leaders.

"American Muslims and other people of conscience should support positive educational efforts to prevent the spread of Islamophobia," said CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper in the release.

The National Association of Evangelicals, the nation's largest umbrella evangelical group, issued a statement urging the church to cancel the event, warning it could cause worldwide tension between the two religions. "The NAE calls on its members to cultivate relationships of trust and respect with our neighbors of other faiths. God created human beings in his image, and therefore all should be treated with dignity and respect," it said in the statement.

They will probably all just chip in and buy one Qurans. Throw it out on their stone parking lot with some lighter fluid on it. Set it ablaze and watch it burn for that whole 5 mins and then think to themselves. "wow, that was dumb. Maybe we should find a more constructive way to express our opinions."

Man! ur comments are funny but true !!! But I believe, burning the Quran would just create more hatred and anger and as it is there enough that goes around!!! Burn OR No Burn, it isn't going to help the christians in any way...will it??! It isn't going to help anyone !!!!
      So why do it?!?

Then he should send out mustache bombers. Men, women and children wearing highly explosive mustache's that clearly resemble his own. To put forthe the message that there is only one body of Christ and we'll blow you up if you think otherwise.

As a Christian, I do NOT support the burning of anyone's scriptures and I would hope that people would not be ignorant enough to lump all Christians in with these extremist weirdos. Even I do not agree with someone, I would never prohibit their freedom to worship as they would like, in the same way I would hope they would extend that same freedom to me.

I just would like to make a point from what whitney said, especially this part "I would hope that people would not be ignorant enough to lump all Christians in with these extremist weirdos"....Thank you Whitney, I do hope everyone realizes that it goes for the muslims as well. They hope that "people would not be ignorant enough to lump all MUSLIMS in with these extremist weirdos"

Burning the qur'an is not going to achieve anything, yes there are terrorists out there but not only solely muslims, other religions, other beliefs or organizations who in it has of a minority or even majority amount of people who are blinded by their own idea of what is right and take it to the extreme also can be terrorists as they sought out to eradicate or change anyone who disagrees with them. Read history and you will find many-many examples. Its just that at our time, Islam is the hot topic.

true islam do not care what you believe, the true muslims task is to just to bring glad tidings and tell the truth...if the other person does not accept it or does not want to listen well...it is between them and God...according to the qur'an killing one person is killing the world saving one person is saving the world...it is very sad that too many perverse people out there who uses religion/group/organization to gain their own profitable ego is causing so much pain to so much people...

Yeah. I agree with you Whitney. I'm a Christian & I think this Islam scripture burning is not only completely against the ideals & prinicples Christ C also going to be done without a permit, which could cause a fire & hurt people who aren't involved in this biazzare extremist junk. No where in the Bible does it encourage those who follow Christ to break laws that are there to protect people & the Bible definitely DOES NOT SUPPORT FIGHTING TERRORISM OR ANY OTHER FORM OF HATE BY BURNING RELIGIOUS SCRIPTURES OF OTHER RELIGIONS. THAT GOES COMPLETELY CONTRARY TO CHRIST'S TEACHINGS OF PEACE, LOVE, PATEINECE & ACCEPTANCE HOW CAN A CHRISTIAN CALL THEMSELF A FOLLOWER OF CHRIST & DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS? I'd also hope that people would not be ignorant enough to lump all Christians in with these extremist weirdos.

I think this pastor is putting actions to his words. He is trying to teach his members to peacefully show their belief that there is only one body of Christ. This act is not hurting anyone. Disciples of Christ are to be a light to the World, not hide in the face of aggressive deceptions that becoming a detriment to our society and beliefs.

Burning a Quran is not a peaceful demonstration. Its an act of war.

@Paulus If it's an act of war, then we need to have it. Any restriction on freedoms means we have no freedoms at all. Are you willing to give up your rights so that some jagoff in the middle east can feel better about the nonsense he believes?

That is a silly argument. Why do they have to protest someone else's religion? Christ did teach tolerance. Even if they don't believe in Islam teachings, burning another religions holy book should be taboo, if they really followed the teachings of Jesus, who DIDN'T teach to hate what you don't know. And why is the Quran a detriment to those parishioners' society or beliefs? If they believe in Christ, then what would having a Quran around in the world have to do with that? Are they all afraid it might rub off on them, or give them cooties or something? You either believe in what you profess to believe in or you don't. Getting rid of things (such as books) are not going to make your belief any bigger or better.

Curious about something? Assuming that the parishioners at this "so-called church" are Non-Muslims, how many of them do you suppose have a Quaran to burn? I know I don't. I would actually have to go out and purchase one and then burn it. Is that what they are suggesting? Just another opiniated, brain-washed southern redneck hillbilly IMO.

  14. Reality

The story begins at Michigan State University with a mechanical engineering professor named Indred Wichman.

Wichman sent an e-mail to the Muslim Student's Association.

The e-mail was in response to the students' protest of the Da-nish carto-ons that por-trayed the Pro-phet Muhammad as a te-rro-rist.

The group had complained the cartoons were 'hate speech'

    Enter Professor Wichman.

In his e-mail, he said the following:

    Dear Muslim Association,

As a professor of Mechanical Engineering here at MSU I intend to protest your protest.

I am offended not by cartoons, but by more mundane things like be-headings of civilians, cow-ardly attacks on public buildings, su-icide mur-ders, mu-rders of Catholic priests (the latest in Turkey), burnings of Christian churches, the continued perse-cution of C-o-ptic Christians in Egypt, the imposition of Sha-ria law on non-Muslims, the ra-pes of Scandinavian girls and women (called 'wh-ores' in your culture), the murder of film directors in Holland, and the rioting and looting in Paris France.

This is what offends me, a soft-spoken person and academic, and many, many of my colleagues. I counsel you dissatisfied, agg-ressive, bru-tal, and un-civilized slave-trading Muslims to be very aware of this as you proceed with your infa-ntile 'protests.'

If you do not like the values of the West – see the 1st Amendment – you are free to leave. I hope for God's sake that most of you choose that option.

Please return to your anc-estral homelands and build them up yourselves instead of troubling Americans.

Including but not limited to the brutalities of crusades, enslaving blacks, brutally killing native americans, grabbing their land. Treating everyone non white as shi**. starting wars to protect their own greedy interests.
At the same time making your own women dance around a pole in a skimpy under garment. Islam bashing is in fashion just because its an election year and GOP has no credentials of its own to run on. Get a brain and care to use it.

to this i would reply to the dear professor as i'm sure as a learned man he is aware of the brutality of chatel slavery practiced in this country for more than 400 years by our christian forebearers the taking away of the dignity of men because of the color of their skin , the raping of countless slave girls by their "masters" the selling of babies and children from their mothers bosoms dispite their protests and mournfull wailings and the baptisim of newly captured africans just before they were shackelled to the hull of rat and maggot infested slave ships to be carried to this most christain of lands. the same perpetrators of these and other horrors too numerous to enumerate, had hold of that same bible they have hold of today and even used that same bible to justify their evil deeds. some even burned crosses in the black peoples yards to terrorize and stiffle movement to the freedoms they know today. and in serbia what about the ethnic cleansing and systematic rape of over 500,000 muslim women by christain soldiers and how they forced these women to carry the ill concieved pregnancies to term?, or still what about the hundreds of thousands of kids raped by catholic priests in every corner of the world? my point is people throughout time have done horrible things under the guise of religion and christains are definitely no exception and ordinary adherants to a religion have the right to protest if they are offended so that professor should pooper scoop his own religious backyard before relieving himself in someone elses

Google "Muslims bible burning" to get all said information about Muslims burning the bible but note that once the "bowers" of Islam see how they have been conned by their imams and ayatollahs for the last 1400 years, they too will burn their copies of the koran i.e. the angel Gabriel never existed so there is no way that the warmongering, womanizing, and hallucinating Mohammed got any koranic passages from some god. Tis the great angelic con game. Joe Smith was the latest to pull it off with his "angelic" Moroni. The significant stupidity and gullibility of it all!!!!!

And ditto when we the "pew peasants" of Christianity finally realize the con that has been pulled on us, we too will burn our bibles. I have not burned my copy but have relegated it to the mostly fiction section of my reference library.

[47] And when it is said to them, "Bow down (i.e. submit to Allah's commands')", they donot bow down. [48] Woe, that Day, to the deniers! [49] Now, in which discourse, after this, will they believe? It's people like this that make the international news and give America the bad name it has. People that are so low as this is how we, the rest of America, get called not only childish; but stupid, pathetic and close-minded. When I see things like this, I'm inclined to agree. Few realize, and fewer still acknowlede, that it is not the faith that attacked America. That's like saying the Bible is responsible for lynching people instead of the KKK.

Agreed. It's a double standard. Of course, no Christian person would ever consider something in THEIR book to be horrendous. It's all about interpretations of the bible at that point "Sure God killed 70,000 people for no good reason, but that's a metaphor and not to be taken seriously." But then in the same breath "Islam says they need to kill infidels, it's a religion of hate!"

Never attribute anything to malice that can adequately be explained by stupidity.

well however you feel, Quran certainly has its own miracles. If you'll burn it (NAOZOBILLAH) you will harm your ownself, i am just giving a fore-warning rest ALLAH will do what HE wills, if HE has given you the power now doesn't mean you will be powerful on the day of resurrection, that is the day of loss and gain and there's no doubt on its occurence.Holy Quran has its own miracles and u can never ever extinguish its effects; thats what important IS. WE MUSLIMS LOVE QURAN AND CAN SACRIFICE THOUSAND LIVES IN ORDER TO PROTECT IT!!! i ask will you do the same for your own holy book on which we have faith too and always respect it just like our own book? If positive then learn to respect other peoples too. We donot mind ourselves being killed but that will be another scene and might lead to a great war.

Hadhrat Shaykh Zulfqar Ahmad (db) said
In 1987, Qari Abdul Basit was visiting America, the same Qari Abdul Basit whose cassettes of the Holy Quran have become famous. Someone asked him once if he had seen a miracle of the Holy Quran, to which Qari Abdul Basit said, "Just one miracle? I can relate thousands which I have seen with my own eyes." The man asked him to relate some, so Qari Abdul Basit started talking.
Qari Abdul Basit related an event from the time of Jamal Abdul Nasser, who was once the president of Egypt. Communism was at its height, and once while on tour of the Soviet Union, Nasser was pressured heavily to become a communist and thus spread the doctrine in his country. He was promised that the Soviet Union would make Egypt a technological giant if only Nasser would renounce Islam and introduce Communism as the state religion. Abdul Nasser politely refused and thus ended this particular tour. He reached home but was restless that he had not defended Islam as sufficiently as he should have because he was not knowledgeable enough.
Abdul Nasser was invited to the Soviet Union again after a few years, and so this time he requested Qari Abdul Basit to come to Moscow with him. Abdul Basit was surprised because he had never imagined that he would ever be required in the Soviet Union, a land whose government and people refused to acknowledge Allah.
On this occasion Jamal Abdul Nasser courageously introduced Qari Abdul Basit to the Soviet heads of state, telling them that he would recite the Holy Quran, the Book of Islam. Qari Abdul Basit closed his eyes and started reciting Surah Ta Ha, the same part of the Holy Quran that had made one of the worst enemies of Islam, Hadrat Umar ibn Khattab, bow to Islam.
Qari Abdul Basit opened his eyes and looked up after reciting two rukus, and he saw the miracle of the Holy Quran in front of his eyes. Four to five heads of the Communist Party were in tears. Jamal Abdul Nasser smiled and asked, "Why are you crying?" to which one of them replied, "We don't know. We haven't understood a word but there is something in this Quran that has melted our hearts and compelled us to cry. We don't know what has done this."
Qari Abdul Basit said that this was an amazing miracle that he saw in front of him. These were people who did not know the Glorious Quran; did not accept the Glorious Quran, and who could not understand the Glorious Quran, yet Allah was affecting their hearts through the recital of the Glorious Quran. Hadhrat Imam Ghulam Habib (ra) used to say that no one makes routes for rivers; rivers make their own routes and ways. The Holy Quran is such a Book that winds its own route of mercy through to the hearts of people, which is why the unbelievers of Makkah and Madinah accepted Islam upon hearing it. This is why the unbelievers used to confer among themselves and advise each other to shout and make noise whenever the Holy Quran would be read, so that they would not be affected.
However, the Holy Quran was sent to win over hearts, and Allah accepts those who live their lives by it. We should try and read the Holy Quran often and act according to its instructions so that Allah makes us successful both in this world and the Hereafter.
Our righteous predecessors received blessings because of their closeness to the Holy Quran. This was the Message that shook Arabia, and wherever the Sahabah turned with this Book, the world was compelled to bow. Those camel and sheepherders who refused to bow to Caesar of Rome became people who changed the destiny of the world. How? They used to act upon the Holy Quran, unlike people who don't act upon it now. They were true lovers of this Glorious Quran, reading softly or loudly, sometimes crying.
This Book has been sent to enlighten hearts, and if even today people read it with love, Allah will shower blessings upon them. This is a Book of guidance, sent to bring mankind out of darkness and into light. The lovers of the Glorious Quran receive the honor of both this world and the next, like the heights that Allah had awarded the Sahabah RaziAllah Anhum.

Esque, are you saying that is okay to take a life because a book, one of millions perhaps billions of copies the same book? That the issue I have with religion, human life is worth nothing, you people justify taking a persons life for burning paper, does this make any sense to you? If your God can be destroyed that easily maybe you should consider adopting another God (there are plenty to chose from). If your God is that upset that a book is being burned but cares nothing about the murder of a child (stoning of a pregnant woman) then maybe you should reconsider your commitment to this God. If your God is so weak he/she/it needs you or any other man to stand up for him/her/it maybe you reconsider who or what protects you and your family. I think life makes more sense if you do not believe in a God.

Bob, Islam never says to kill infidels just because they are infidels unlike you people who considers massacre of Muslims as your relegious or maybe personal right. If so, After the conquest of Makkah those who killed Muslims, threw them out of their homes just because they accepted the truth, tortured their wives and children for the sake of their wives and children for the sake of "good" well hurt them in all the barbarous and inhuman acts after Muslims won Our Holy Prophet Mohammad Sallallahu Alaihay Wasallam announced that all the women and children are safe(of infidels) all the men are safe; you all are forgiven..Now what is this? if our motive is to finish everybody then why are we taught to forgive those who hurt us, to forgive which is the best of acts that Our LORD loves the most. And jihad (fight) is as the final resort when our relegion and people are threatened. What do you even know of Islam? Where do you earn these twisted forms??

JohnQuest, Ah, i am not surprised you think this way because we are so ignorant of reality we feel we are just evolutionized as if there is no existence of a Sovereign power who is controlling the entire universe.Well you think a country can run on its own? How can u possibly believe that this universe is working on its own? The idea of there-is-no-God is totally absurd and senseless to me. When i see The miracles of Quran what has been mentioned fourteen hundred years before and is now being proved by "science". Intelligence, wisdom and comprehension speaks itself. We sight miracles...You have no idea how Allah helps at every now and then, i donot know how to explain but i have a coherent human mind and i accept things only those that are logical. And do you not see your birth, how have you been made from a semen?? Now our Quran explains us the reality of life in real means. Where it not our God telling us to go and KILL ourselves for HIS book but we volunteer, and it doesn't go in vain we get so, just SO much in return that you have no idea..There is so much i want to tell but in mere words its hard to explain. And by the way if somebody comes to burn, no let alone insult your parents will you stand that? Even if that might risk your very life? probably not. Our Lord, ALLAH SWT is much more precious than our parents. He has bestowed so many blessings upon us. I can't thank HIM enough for all his blessings and love and support in every single day of my life.He didnt made me abnormal..no single human have control over these matters. He gave me so much without even asking so do i play no part in HIS love? I am not ungrateful, i cannot be. He has given me "PEACE" the most important thing in ones life; peace of heart peace of mind, bliss and the pleasure i have in serving HIM, its a prestige, u donot understand. Of all the things we have, this love, love of ALLAH is the best, yes the "best" thing that has ever happened to us.I again ask you to read Holy Quran, just once.I am not saying you to change your relegion niether am i asking you to side us or maybe back, ALLAH alone is enough for us.All i want is you to know the truth. We aren't created just like that, there is a purpose; we are not animals but we have been given brains, to understand, sight to observe, and heart to accept the truth. And as for women, we donot let women go to jihad or to fight with men, they are given so much respect, much more than you might have ever seen unlike in your society where women are used and then thrown they have no high respect and so.In islam each single life as alot of importance like in one of the Holy traditions "One who saved a single life, saved the whole humanity". I dont know how to explain this to you in the best way all i ask is get your answers from the Holy Quran. And the most provoking thing you said just a matter of papers then listen, THESE aren't just papers, any paper. These are the WORDS of our SUSTAINER and we cannot stand blasphemous act against it.They are golden no diamond words, but then again u won't understand unless you actually know what it is. Why don't you work things out? Why is it that Muslims are so crazy about their relegion? its not craziness its the intensity of love, the impact of THE TRUTH. And what you mean by stoning a pregnant women is not just a pregnant women but a "whore" or one who deceives his husband and then after this punishment Allah may send that person to heaven. But you know what? u wont understand. We have a few strict laws and due to them we have very very very few crime rates, very few women who are unfaithful to their husbands and very few who are not virgins before wedding. Why do it in first place so as to entail such punishment!! We have lives that are much like humans, not like animals who have no certain boundaries of to-do's unlike us.I am a Muslim girl and we our free to do our will but within prescribed limits.that is why i say I love my relegion!

oh and i forgot to mention that women is not stoned while she is pregnant but after she has given birth to the child and completed the period and suckling..and the child is then nurtured by the islamic government in a rightful manner since its not the childs mistake and is taken care properly. By the way such cases are only for married but for those who commit this indecent act before marriage her punishment isnt being stoned to death...and such cases of adultery is very very rare in our society Alhamdolillah..!

I swear What you said is true!! i am a Muslim and Islam never thought of attacking America or the world its just that some idiot calling them selves as "Muslims" when they know none... say "Islam means that when someone steals we cut off their hand" nooo its not up to the people to punish a stealer its god!! and they say spread Islam by "SWORD" ... hell no that was never told in the days of Muhammad (PBUH)... Actually Prophet Muhammad never like wars, he (PBUH) said he never liked to hold a sword or fight... so why do you criticize Muhammad (PBUH) as a murder and child molester when he wasn't... like seriously READ THE BOOK BEFORE MAKING YOUR IDIOTIC COMMENTS!!! GOSH PEOPLE WAKE UP!!! THIS IS BULLSHIT!!!! BURNING THE QURAN IS JUST LIKE SAYING BURNING THE BIBLE OR BURNING THE TORAH... BIBLE AND TORAH ARE THE WORDS OF GOD SO AS THE QURAN!!! IT SAYS IN THE QURAN THAT THE TORAH WAS SENT ON MOUSA (MOZES) AND THE BIBLE WAS SENT TO IISA (JESUS)... PLUS WE MUSLIMS RESPECT THEM CAUSE THEY ARE THE PROPHETS AND WE FOLLOW ALL THE PROPHETS BUT WHY MUHAMMAD IS BECAUSE HE BROUGHT PEACE AND HAPPINESS AND HE WAS THE LAST PROPHET OF ALL!! WE MUSLIMS RESPECT IDRIS (ENOCH), NUH (NOAH), IBRAHIM (ABRAHAM), LUT (LOT), ISMA'IL (ISHMAEL), IS'HAQ (ISAAC), YAQUB (JACOB), YUSUF (JOSEPH), AYYUB (JOB), MOUSA (MOSES), HARUN (AARON), DAWUD (DAVID), SULAYMAN (SOLOMON), ILYAS (ELIJAH), Al-YASA (ELISHA), YUNUS (JONAH), ZAKARIYYA (ZACHARIAH), YAHYA (JOHN THE BAPTIST), ISA (JESUS), AND THE LAST MUHAMMAD... THESE ARE THE NAMES OF ALL THE PROPHETS AND ALL MUSLIMS RESPECT THEM SO DONT SAY THINGS YOU DONT KNOW ABOUT THEM !!!! btw this is not for you rae-red...

Now how many are you going to destroy, no you can't abolish this most-misunderstood but TRUE relegion based on love, sacrifice, fraternity, brotherhood, justice, equality and MOST importantly PEACE.have you yourself ever recited Quran? then i bet you wouldn't be saying this, i am NOT forcing but a humble advice, just read it once and then make comments about it.

I have read it several times. In Arabic, by the way. (one of the perks of living near Dearborn, Michigan is being able to learn Arabic) I found it borrowed myths from other religious texts and religions and combined them with a hostile tone of intolerance. Decent read, but fiction, none the less. I would suggest you read a physics book with an open mind.

@Esque So Islam is a true religion eh? I don't think so. I question any religion that informs me that if I'm going to clean my genetials with stones I should use an odd number. Or if I have a bad dream, I should wake up and blow three times to my left. You know, stupid nonsense like that sort of turns away intelligent people from Islam.

      @englishsir

Most intelligent Muslims are going to see this for what it is – a tiny minority of extremists acting irrationally.

The 9-11 attacks were carried out by very similar people. Intelligent people with self-control don't paint everyone with the same brush.
And don't try to tell us that a billion people on the other side of the world actually give a dam about these little things in America, because they are too busy with their own problems. You're just trying to scare people.
      Take your fearmongering and feck-off!

The 9-11 attacks were carried out by a small minority? Sure, what about the millions protesting in the streets every time a newspaper dipicts a cartoon of the "prophet"? What about the terrorist bombings worldwide? What about all the Imams presching death to America? What about the silence from the muslim community after every terrorist attack including 9-11? Sorry, these lunatics are not some small minority. It is the entire lot of them, preached to about violence, conversion by the sword, and world domination on a weekly basis, This is not a religion; it is a fanatical cult that will not rest until me are all muslim or dead. Anyone who states otherwise is either ignorant or nieve.

@Akbar Ali - You can't leave Islam once you're in. This is an interesting one. It is actually illegal in Islamic states to convert out of Islam. This is a critical part of Shari'a law. Someone who has rejected Islam who was once a Muslim is an "apostate." This is a crime and a sin, and the punishment for it is death (and eternal damnation in hell thereafter).

Obviously, you can see why this idea has been included in the collection, but this one has actually caused Islam a problem because those who are following Islam to the letter consider more "moderate" Muslims (those who want to ignore or alter the more violent passages of the Quran) to be apostates. Since the punishment for apostates is death, fundamentalist Muslims are fighting modernizing Muslims all over the world, and keeping many rebellious, modernizing Muslims from speaking up for fear of death.

Every time a group of Muslims decides that maybe Islam should be updated for the 21st century and maybe women should have some rights and maybe the government should be more democratic, the devout Muslims call them apostates and try to kill them.

In this and in many other ways, Islam protects its own fidelity (in other words, the original idea-collection cannot be altered).

Another idea in Shari'a law says it's against the law for anyone to try to convert a Muslim to another religion.

          10. Islam must be your first allegiance. You are a Muslim first, before any allegiance you give to your family, your tribe, or your country.

This does two things: It causes a unity of people across borders which allows the group to grow bigger than any other entity. In other words, the "Nation of Islam" can grow bigger than any country, no matter how large (which gives the group a massive numerical advantage).

Akbhar, this really isn't about religion. I am neither Christian nor Muslim. I have read both 'bibles". To me their is little truth in either. Just the writings of men. With all their flaws. But to each his own.
However, I do recognize where the violence mostly comes from. If Christian bibles were being burned by Muslims, there might be some protests, but world leaders wouldn't get on the horn to ask for the burning not to happen because of all the violence it would cause.
So, the religion of peace is .....which one again?

Actually to me it's neither religion...but not believing in religion, makes it easier to recognize the real truths.

Burning the Quran is an act of self service, stupidity, disrespect and maybe even hatred in this guys case.
But the people reacting violently to it or even expecting violent reaction..aren't saying the truth...which is: That anyone who would react violently..especially to someone not involved in the enflaming act; is just a person that is taught violence as a way of life, and who's 'true" religion taught him or her that violence in the name of religion is okay. That my God taught me I can squash you if you hurt my feelings.
Please, any religion that teaches unabashed violence is man-made is not of God. No matter what that religion may be.

          i will give some hints
          hope i make myself clear.
Do u know that to be a real Muslim u have to believe in Jesus(not as a god as a prophet just like Muhammad), why do we favorise Muhammad because FOR US(i dnt know about you,ur free to believe in what you want even in my country as long as you are not offending me) he is the last prophet that had the last religion ISLAM, in Quran it's not just about Muhammad it's about other prophets as well.
My point is we are not very different the only difference between Muslims and Christians is that u believe in him as a god , we believe that there is only 1 god and that Muhammad and Jesus pray for him just like us(it doesnt matter how they pray but
          at least they pray).

I hope i made myself clear enough i'm not trying to offend any1 if i did this im sry but hope u understood what i meant.

Youssof, This isn't meant to be offensive to you. There are many differences between Islam and Christianity. But given the current situation in the Middle East with Iran fueling that reactor, it appears to some of us the fuse has been lit for war. The Bible speaks of the destruction of Damascus (Isaiah 17:1, 14; Jeremiah 49:23-27; Amos 1:3-5; Zechariah 9:1-8). It will become a ruinous heap. Sahih Musllim Book 041, Number 7015 says Jesus returns to Damascus. The Bible says Jesus will return to Jerusalem. Let's see how this plays out. Clearly Jesus can't return to a place that no longer exists. When you see Damascus destroyed, whether it's in this upcoming war or another one, please consider looking to Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

if not damascus, jesus will find some other muslim city to live in! he sure as hell is not going to be hanging around with christians. he will be appalled at the fact that they have made him into a God. As a practicing jew, he would have found that totally unacceptable. He will find muslims are the closest thing to how he lived his life. monotheistic, abstained from pork, kept the laws of God, and encouraged modesty and chastity and the institution of marriage.

infact i often joke, that when Jesus lands on earth, initially he would think Muslims were his followers, the gentiles he hoped to convert to judaism to or the judaism he hoped to convert to a gentile friendly version. until he finds out that there is another Prophet, Muhammad who is actually responsible for fashioning the Muslims into what Jesus wished for his followers to be like.

        • Reality

          Youssof,

As with most Christians, you suffer from a form of the Three B Syndrome i.e. Bred, Born and Brainwashed in some type of religion. In your case it is Islam. As noted previously on these blog pages there is an easy cure called the Five Step Program for Deflawing Islam. A free copy is attached.

o Using "The 77 Branches of Islamic "faith" a collection compiled by Imam Bayhaqi as a starting point. In it, he explains the essential virtues that reflect true "faith" (iman) through related Qur’anic verses and Prophetic sayings." i.e. a nice summary of the Koran and Islamic beliefs.

          "1. Belief in Allah"

aka as God, Yahweh, Zeus, Jehovah, Mother Nature, etc. should be added to your cleansing neurons.

"2. To believe that everything other than Allah was non-existent. Thereafter, Allah Most High created these things and subsequently they came into existence."

Evolution and the Big Bang or the "Gi-b G-nab" (when the universe starts to recycle) are more plausible and the "akas" for Allah should be included if you continue to be a "crea-tionist".

"3. To believe in the existence of angels."

A major item for neuron cleansing. Angels/de-vils are the mythical creations of ancient civilizations, e.g. Hitt-ites, to explain/define natural events, contacts with their gods, big birds, sudden winds, protectors during the dark nights, etc.

No "pretty/ug-ly wingy thingies" ever visited or talked to Mohammed, Jesus, Mary or Joseph or Joe Smith. Today we would classify angels as f–airies and "tin–ker be-lls". Modern de-vils are classified as the de-mons of the de-mented.

"4. To believe that all the heavenly books that were sent to the different prophets are true. However, apart from the Quran, all other books are not valid anymore."

Another major item to delete. There are no books written in the spirit state of Heaven (if there is one) just as there are no angels to write/publish/distribute them. The Koran, OT, NT etc. are simply books written by humans for humans.
Prophets were invented by ancient scribes typically to keep the un-educated masses in line. Today we call them for-tune tellers.

Prophecies are also invali-dated by the natural/God/Allah gifts of Free Will and Future.

"5. To believe that all the prophets are true. However, we are commanded to follow the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) alone."

Mohammed supposedly spent thirty days fasting in a hot cave attended by his wives before his first contact with Allah aka God etc. via a "pretty wingy thingy". Common sense demands a neuron deletion of #5. #5 is also the major source of Islamic vi-olence i.e. turning Mohammed's "fast, hunger-driven" hallu-cinations into horrible reality for unbelievers.

Accept these five "cleansers" and we guarantee a complete recovery from your Islamic ways!!!!

I think, in my humble opinion, that if more people understood and believed what you just wrote, we all probably wouldn't have a problem getting along. However, most organized religions are not going to want their members to be so tolerant of another religion, no matter how similar, or even encourage understanding of another's religion. It's sad, but humans can be horribly ignorant, especially when it becomes to thier belief systems and organized religion.

David Johnson, I refuted your 'errors in the Bible' back on the quran outrage page. You know, I was thinking about our calendar B. C. and A. D. , it must really kill you to think the basis of time revolves around Jesus Christ. Seems to me the entire world , minus yourself and other superior mental giants, actually believe the 'fairy tale', otherwise the calendar would be changed. Or maybe our brains just haven't evolved as much as yours. Oh well, gotta go clean my guns and cling to my Bible now. Later.

          @Keith

The only thing you answered were the errors in the New Testament. Actually that was a new conversation generated because I blew away your first indisputable argument.

You said, "For crying out loud, man thought that the earth was a flat disk for how long?"

Evidently the baby Jesus didn't know the earth was round. Really doesn't matter what Isaiah says. But I will deal with it.

The following passages indicate a belief in a flat earth:

          Isaiah 11:12
12 And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the FOUR CORNERS OF THE EARTH. (KJV)

          Revelation 7:1
1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on FOUR CORNERS OF THE EARTH, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. (KJV)

          Job 38:13
13 That it might take hold of the ENDS OF THE EARTH, that the wicked might be shaken out of it? (KJV)

          Jeremiah 16:19
19 O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ENDS OF THE EARTH, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit. (KJV)

          Daniel 4:11
11 The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the ENDS OF ALL THE EARTH: (KJV)

          Matthew 4:8
8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; (KJV)

Astronomical bodies are spherical, and you cannot see the entire exterior surface from any place. The kingdoms of Egypt, China, Greece, Crete, sections of Asia Minor, India, Maya (in Mexico), Carthage (North Africa), Rome (Italy), Korea, and other settlements from these kingdoms of the world were widely distributed. This is an error. Baby Jesus should have known better.

You said, "the book of Isaiah says the earth was round."

Doesn't say round. It says: ""He sits enthroned above the CIRCLE of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in. (KJV)"

A circle is not a ball or sphere or an egg-shaped object. A circle is a flat round surface, similar to flat rectangular, or square, or triangular surfaces. So if the Bible claims that the Earth is a circle, then this is still bogus because the earth is obviously not a flat surface.

One thing is for sure clear, and that is Isaiah 40:22 is obviously ambiguous and not clear if we wish to prove from it that the Earth is not flat and is egg-shaped. If we look at what the entire Bible says (as presented above by all the Verses) about the shape of the Earth as the Roman Catholic Church did in the past, then we would reach the same conclusion they reached, and that is: The Earth is Flat! But you fundies are special and wouldn't have thought that, right LOL.

Oh, Oh! Dave has run over Jesus with an iron chariot! Ouch!!!

More to come. I just want to make sure this will not be moderated.

          @ttwp

Okay, so when Satan took Jesus to an exceedingly high mountain to show him all the kingdoms of the world, why did he do that?

I was watching the Survivor Man Series the other day. The fellow always climbs a mountain or a tree, so he can see as much of the terrain as possible. Don't you think that is what the writer of the Temptation of Christ was trying to convey? He was saying, all the kingdoms of the world could be seen, by climbing a high enough mountain. If the Spirit of God had inspired the writer, how could this error have happened? If this is just the writings of a man, how can we believe the resurrection is true?

I know I am serving up bitter medicine, brother. Cheers!

God's Word may be bitter to you, but it's sweet to me. Just as the cross is viewed by some as disgusting and evil, but it is amazingly beautiful to many. May God open your heart to His Word and love. Take care.

Does that hint that they not only thought world was flat, but also square? (Four Corners of the Earth). We still use that saying these days...four corners...interesting.

          @Keith

Maps have four corners and the corners represent the most distant points from the center. Today the expression means to cover an area in it's entirety.

The 4 points of a compass. Fundies will argue that, that was the meaning when it was written in the above verses. But, the people from this period were not aware of oher civilizations on the other side of the world. If you take the verses literally, it makes more sense. It's odd how the fundies want to take some things literally and others not, depending on how it affects their beliefs.

          Source: Wikipedia
Belief in a flat Earth is found in mankind's oldest writings, such as the Epic of Gilgamesh. In early Egyptian[8] and Mesopotamian thought the world was portrayed as a flat disk floating in the ocean. A similar model is found in the Homeric account of the 8th century BCE in which "Okeanos, the personified body of water surrounding the circular surface of the earth, is the begetter of all life and possibly all the gods,"[9] which forms the premise for early Greek maps such as those of Anaximander and Hecataeus of Miletus.

The Hebrew Bible carried forward the ancient Middle Eastern cosmology, such as in the Enuma Elish, which described a flat earth with a solid roof, surrounded by water above and below,[10][11] as illustrated by references to the "foundations of the earth" and the "circle of the earth" in the following examples:

"He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in." Isaiah 40:22, see also Isaiah 44:24-28;Genesis 1:10,16-18; Psalms 136:7-9; Proverbs 8:27; Luke 4:5.[12]
"For the foundations of the earth are the LORD's; upon them he has set the world." 1 Samuel 2:8; see also Job 38:4-6; Psalm 93:1

People in Jesus's day were only aware of their small piece of the world. Jesus/God would have known the world was a sphere and that there were other civilizations that could not be seen even if you stood on the moon.

Even if there were no other indicators, the Temptation of Christ story shows whoever wrote the bible believed the earth was flat.

There are many names in many languages used to designate this year-numbering system that originated in Western Europe. Common Era notation has been adopted in several non-Christian cultures and by many scholars in religious studies and other academic fields[10] [11] wishing to be sensitive to non-Christians,[12] because Common Era does not explicitly make use of religious titles for Jesus, such as Christ and Lord, which are used in the BC/AD notation.[10][13][14][15] Some (the idiot fundies) who oppose Common Era notation claim that its propagation is the result of secularization, anti-supernaturalism, religious pluralism, and political correctness.[16][17][18][19] Others suggest it does not go far enough—because it does not remove the birth of Jesus as the era marker, and still focuses on an event in Western civilization

Jesus is only good as an era marker. I bet in not too much time, the marker will vanish. Jesus just isn't as important as he used to be. LOL

          @Keith

Posting this here again, to make sure you see it.

This was how the universe appeared to the ancient Israelites who authored the Bible and to most everyone else in ancient times:

The earth appeared to be flat and circular sitting on pillars with a rotating solid sky dome overhead which carried the Sun, the Moon, and the Stars and allowed water to leak through "windows of heaven" or sluice gates to form clouds and rain. God was imagined to live on top of the dome and walk on it.

Some would say that the ends of the earth is not be taken literally and that would be true today, but the phrase is leftover from when people used to really believe the earth had ends, which was the case for the ancient Hebrews and most everyone else at that time.

          Another example of flat earth:
The author of Job is saying something is longer than the earth. A flat earth with ends could be compared for length, but longer has no meaning for a spherical earth.

(Job 11:9 NRSV) Its measure is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.

          The Bible’s solid sky dome:

Here God is imagined to create a solid sky dome that separates the waters into two parts.
One would become the oceans and the other would remain above the solid sky dome to provide an explanation of where water came from to cause clouds and rain in the absence of the knowledge of evaporation.

(Gen 1:6-7 NRSV) And God said, "Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters."

So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so.

Here is another verse which mentions the water above the sky dome.

(Psa 148:4 NRSV) Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens!

Your bible is written by men. The writings reflect the knowledge and beliefs of the times.

David, I grow tired of you. Don't you recognize figurative language when you see it? Example. In John 1:29, when John the Baptist pointing out Jesus, said, "Behold the Lamb of God", it is clear that he wasn't speaking of Jesus as a literal "sheep" with wool that goes 'Bhaaaa'. The reason you can't see these things David, is that you were (along with the rest of us) spiritually stillborn. You HAVE to be born again, otherwise you will never see God's Kingdom.

David Johnson, Yeah, wikipedia's reliable, sure. You know Jesus alluded to the earth being round when He spoke of 'two will be working in a field, one will be taken the other left; and two will be sleeping in bed, one taken the other left. For you to deny God you must have 100% knowledge of the universe. I doubt you have that. That said, there must be left room for the possibility that He actually exists. You're not sure. You're playing roulette with a revolver with how many bullets? 1 ? 2 ? 6 ? I pray you eventually come to the knowledge of the Truth. I would like to meet you someday-in heaven.

Actually Keith, if you claim there is a god, you are the one who claims to have 100% knowledge of the universe. Yet, you make these claims without providing verifiable evidence to support your claim. Is it more important for you to know that your god exists or have faith that he exists?

Eric G, No I don't claim 100% knowledge of the universe. David Johnson, Good luck with the roulette game you're playing. In your arrogance, you think you know everything. "We do not know a millionth of one percent about anything."-Thomas Edison. To categorically say , 'there is no God', is to make an absolute statement. For that statement to be true, you must have absolute knowledge. You sir do not have that. You are right about one thing-you will be done, well done, in the Lake of Fire. And yes, I know, lakes of fire don't exist either. Perhaps you can use that search engine of yours and cut and paste information on a 'white dwarf star'.

          Keith,

It is possible that there is a "first cause" to all that we are experiencing - but maybe not, if the study of physics turns out to find some kind of infinite loop or something... dimensions that we don't comprehend yet.

Consequences of the "laws" of this first cause, if it exists, are observable... i.e., if you jump from a 20-story building, there's a pretty close to 100% chance that you will go "splat" (weird things *could* happen, like a thermal draft or something). Natural consequences.

Many want to call this "first cause" God, and assign to it human characteristics - love, desires, anger, etc. There is no proof of this. Religious texts are all simply fabrications dreamed up by people trying to explain the as yet unexplained.

You are certainly free to believe all the myths that you wish, as long as they don't infringe on the rights of others; but to castigate and threaten others for not believing them is wrong, wrong, wrong.

verify, If there are 'laws', then wouldn't that mean there is a 'LawGiver'? I don't threaten anyone. I simply show them what the Bible says on the subject. I'm sorry if you feel threatened by that. But it is what it is.

          @Keith

          I am done with this.

I have provided evidence for there being errors in the Bible. People can read the evidence and decide for themselves.
Remember, even one error means the bible is not inspired by a perfect, all knowing god. If there is one error, could there not be two? Three? A dozen? How do we know the ressurection of Jesus was not an error?

I am sure you discount Verify's words as well as those of Eric G. As I pointed out, you are a fundie. It is expected of you.

I am tired of the way you debate. When you lose, you threaten me with a hell that does not exist. I won't look for, or respond to, anymore of your posts. Cheers!

I suggest you do some reading on "logic". You cannot prove a negative. I can suggest some references if you need them. @David Johnson
You have answered my rant and yes, my anger is well soothed. Thanks. I knew I could count on you.
In no particular order, my rambling responses:

I was taking my agnostic thing a bit too seriously and it went to my head. Your response was amazingly helpful in pointing that out.

I refuse to argue on the behalf of an apparently non-existent being who should be able to argue on their OWN behalf.

Perhaps my "gods" are uncertainty, doubt, and cynicism. The "religion" of paranoia, perhaps.

One of the things that made me rant was your stance of certainty. I tend to distrust the certainty that other people have in their beliefs – regardless of what they believe. I want to question everything and anything. Nothing should be sacred.
If this sort of belief system has a name, I would not be surprised at all. (but I would question it anyway)

On days like this, I doubt I could even prove MY existence coherently.

In my own anti-fundie rants, I am like a teetotaler going overboard to escape the zombie existence I once had. To be called a "fundie" is painful. That pain is a familiar and bitter drink I have given myself time and time again. I was not thirsty, I assure you, yet I asked for it. Doesn't that sound crazy? Why would I ask for something I did not really want? Perhaps I needed it to grow – though I am a big enough fool already.

My hate for religion is often overwhelming, but I come by it honestly.
In my efforts to moderate my hate, I sometimes err on the side of tolerance. This is, I know, a curious thing to say, but hate can be like that. I am really p'd-off. Have been for a long, long time. Ignoring what I cannot change is really what I should be doing instead of indulging myself in a blog. It can be a farcical catharsis (try saying "farcical catharsis" when you're really drunk) all too often.

I wanted to control you and use you as a weapon against the madness of religion and madness in general.
I am sorry for this. Like a sovereign country, you have a right to self-determination within your own "border", and seeking to control others in my case is overcompensation for feelings of helplessness(among other things).
That I include my own personality disorders in what I am "against" is no doubt a very ironic and hypocritical position for me to have. (So what else is new?) I post and part of it has become words on a page. Vanity and selfishness become one. Expression begets more expression until the feedback loop is obvious. What a curious thing consciousness can be!

In taking myself too seriously, I usually lose sight of where I want to be. This is not what I want happening, yet it happens.

That's human existence for you. "A mug of angst to go with your humble pie?" "Yes, please." "Your bill." "FcKSocks!"
          😛

I need further chewing. Please, come and play.

"It takes no brains to be an athiest. Any stupid person can deny the existence of a supernatural power because man's physical senses cannot detect it. But there cannot be ignored the influence of conscience, the respect we feel for the Moral Law, the mystery of first life...or the marvelous order in which the universe moves about us on this earth. All these evidence the handiwork of the beneficent Deity...That Deity is the God of the Bible and Jesus Christ, His Son." Dwight Eisenhower Gee whiz, why didn't I just post this to begin with? I like Ike!

Let me get this straight. David Johnson's ignorant ranting= evidence that the Bible contains errors? I think not.

Yes, David, my Jesus is an era marker. It's because He's the One who created the whole concept of 'time'. The Alpha and the Omega. Just like He created everything else. He uses the simple, base things to confound the arrogant and proud. Certainly has worked in your case.

All the things you mentioned aren't "silly".
They simply show the power of Allah. If you truly believe in God or any powerful source you should know that things can and have happened because of that power.

Book burnings are so late 1930's Germany. Get with the times, Pastor Jones. Interfaith dialogue, dialectic, and common ground–that's what it's all about.

1930's and late 1920's germany; also like the Spanish Inquisition. No inner awareness in any of that.

As to what I'll do with 'em. That's none of your business. I can do whatever I want with my own property within reason.
Now whatcha gonna do about it?

Here is a link for free qurans to burn. Just do a search for free korans and there are a few sites that give these to kafur ONLY. The rich suadi family will send you one at no cost. It takes a couple weeks to get your leather bound qoran. I got mine just in time.

You did not kill my people... why would I hate you?
      Stop this Racist crap!
All whites are not to be hated because of the few idiots!
Why do you do it to the rest of the world and want the rest of the world to hate and show out right hate to the whole race of another people just to get to a few select and make life harder on all the rest on both sides? Don't these people care for anything that they cause from their actions to other around the world? This is like the old racist days all over again and America has not changed! Look at how republicans for example do with Obama. It makes me sick to still be living in this.

The only book burning done in the New Testament was in Acts 19:19 by people who had been practicing things contrary to Christianity and decided to burn the anti-christian books they had used when they converted to Christianity. People who have not converted from Islam to Christianity have no buisness burning the Qu'ran, let the Muslims do it if they so choose.Public Qu'ran burning is an utter act of hostility and stupidity at this time, you will seriously endanger troops in Afghanastan and abroad. You do not hve to agree with or compromise with Islam but it is therio buisness what they do with their book.
