Religious leaders speak out against International Burn a Quran Day

Terry Jones, pastor of the Dove World Outreach Center, stands in front of his church in Gainesville, Florida

Response so far to an event billed as a Gathering for Peace, Understanding and Hope has been "overwhelmingly positive," a minister in Gainesville, Florida, told CNN on Monday. The event is planned in response to a local church's International Burn a Quran Day.

As part of the Gainesville Interfaith Forum - made up of Christians, Muslims, Jews and Hindus - Trinity United Methodist Church will host the event September 10, the night before the planned burning of the Quran.

The nondenominational Dove World Outreach Center said it will host the Quran-burning event on the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks. The group said it will remember 9/11 victims and take a stand against Islam. With promotions on its website and Facebook page, it invites Christians to burn the Muslim holy book at the church from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

"Our hope is that we'll have a thousand people here and there will be 20 people [at the Quran-burning]," Trinity's senior minister Dan Johnson said Monday. Johnson predicted the event would be "multicultural and multifaith." He said he hoped it would inspire a number of people to sign up for the city's interfaith forum. "One member told me after church Sunday that they've never been as proud to be a member of this church as they are now," Johnson said.

In a note posted on his church's website last week, Johnson invited all residents of Gainesville to the counterevent. "We feel compelled to raise our voices to proclaim that the action the Dove World Outreach Center is proposing is absolutely wrong and counter to the life and teaching of the Jesus whom we
love, follow and call savior and Lord."

Wednesday, the city of Gainesville denied a burn permit to the center, said Bob Woods, City of Gainesville spokesman. "It was a question of public safety," said Woods. "The Gainesville Fire Department has notified the center through a letter," he said.

But that isn't stopping the church. The Gainesville Sun reported that, in an e-mail newsletter sent out Wednesday, the church announced: "City of Gainesville denies burn permit - BUT WE WILL STILL BURN KORANS."

Gene Prince, the interim chief of Gainesville Fire Rescue, told the Sun on Wednesday that under the city's fire prevention ordinance, an open burning of books is not allowed. He said if the church goes ahead with its plan, it will be fined. And the church's intentions aren't the issue. "It wouldn't matter what the book is they're burning," Deputy Chief Tim Hayes told the Sun.

"We believe that Islam is of the devil, that it's causing billions of people to go to hell, it is a deceptive religion, it is a violent religion and that is proven many, many times," Dove World Outreach Center Pastor Terry Jones
told CNN's Rick Sanchez last month.

Jones wrote a book titled "Islam is of the Devil," and the church sells coffee mugs and shirts featuring the phrase. On the church's website, a section lists "Ten Reasons to Burn a Koran." The Islamic advocacy group Council on American-Islamic Relations called on Muslims and others to host "Share the Quran" dinners to educate the public during the monthlong fast of Ramadan beginning in August. In a news release, the group announced a campaign to give out 100,000 copies of the Quran to local, state and national leaders.

"American Muslims and other people of conscience should support positive educational efforts to prevent the spread of Islamophobia," said CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper in the release.

The National Association of Evangelicals, the nation's largest umbrella evangelical group, issued a statement urging the church to cancel the event, warning it could cause worldwide tension between the two religions. "The NAE calls on its members to cultivate relationships of trust and respect with our neighbors of other faiths. God created human beings in his image, and therefore all should be treated with dignity and respect," it said in the statement.

Who are you to judge what you know so liitle of. Have any of you took a good look in your backyard? I promise you the evil you say is of the Quran; will be a misery upon you and yours. This is a Sworn Promise of the same GOD you worship that we worship. Would you take the time to see it differently and seek your your own truth you will see how misguided all peoples are concerning the TRUTH. I was born and raised in the U.S.A. I can't believe how biased and inhumane our country has been to others ways and beliefs for centuries. First the natives of this country were to be submissive to a people that didn't even belong here. That should have been a deceision made by" The ALMIGHTY HIMSELF" not man. generations have been wiped out for greed, power, lust, and hate of what they do not know. Does that sound like aman of is suppose to do? We have as many, if not more unjust cruel people here than any other place I've seen. Child rapist, rapist, murderers, thievies, and adulterers. The COMMANDMENTS are broken in the U.S.A. May GOD have mercy for those who are truly lost.

The Quran counsels the use of deceit when dealing with non-Muslims. Mohammad instructed one of his followers to lie if he had to (in order to assassinate one of Mohammad's enemies). This set a precedent, and the principle was clear: If it helps Islam, it's okay to deceive non-Muslims. Read more about this principle here: Lying (Taqiyya and Kitman).

This instruction in the Quran has served Islamic goals very well through history. And it serves those goals today. On the DVD, Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West, you can watch real-life examples of Islamic leaders saying one thing in English for the Western press, and saying something entirely different to their own followers in Arabic a few days later.

Deceiving the enemy is always useful in war, and throughout history generals have used it. Islamic teachings consider Islam to be in a permanent state of war with the non-Islamic world until the whole world follows Shari'a law (read more about that here). All non-Muslims living in non-Islamic states are "enemies." So deceiving Westerners is totally acceptable because deceiving an enemy in a state of war is totally acceptable. It is encouraged if it can forward the goals of the spread of Islam.

And so we have the strange phenomenon covered by Steven Emerson in Terrorists Among Us, where organizations in America were ostensibly raising money for orphans, but really giving the money to terrorists. They deceived good-hearted Western non-Muslims into giving money to organizations that were actively killing Western non-Muslims.

As it says in the Quran, "War is deceit." This idea gives Islam a tremendous advantage over idea-collections that encourage indiscriminate truthfulness.

You had me until you made that statement that we have more crimes in this country than others. How many countries have you been in and do you read the news, or watch T.V. or talk to others from other countries? There are countries all over the world that commit pretty heinous crimes, genocides (still), ethnic cleansing, etc. and have wars over religion/tribes etc. and kill each other and innocents. We don't have a corner in that market here in the US. Yes, we have problems, but it's up to the citizens to make it better, not just bitch about it. Try getting up and peacefully doing something about things you think are wrong....outreach, community service, etc. What are YOU doing to make it better here in the USA?

A Muslim is forbidden to make friends with a non-Muslim. A Muslim is allowed to pretend to be a friend, but in his heart he must never actually be a friend to a non-Muslim. This is one of the best protections Islam has against Muslims leaving the faith because conversions a new religion are usually made because a friend introduced it. Being forbidden to make friends with non-Muslims helps prevent that from happening. (See Quran quotes about this.)

Read it in context. In that situation when that verse was revealed, it was better for Muslim to not be allies with the non-muslims.
Go read the 'hadith' which are stories of the prophet's (pbuh) life. He was sooo good to non-muslims; even those who verbally and physically hurt him.

My dear friends, my question to you is what is the ratio of muslim to non-mulims in jain in the US? I'm from Canada and I have yet to hear of any muslims killing their parents, drunk driving, rape, theft, drug charges, CHILD PORNOGRAPHY, etc. . If Islam is such a bad religion, why are there such a small ratio of muslims committing these henious crimes against humanity? How much do you actually know about what is in the Quran...do you know we believe in Adam and Eve, Moses, Jesus,Mary,Abraham,Ishamael and all the prophets that all Christians and Catholics believe in? have you actually read the Quran..and if so what about it don't you understand or agree with? I would be happy to enlighten you...then you can judge whether it's worth burning

Hitler burned books too. These religious fascists aren't religious. They are just fascists. Any religion taken to an extreme is nuts. After awhile those with all the answers–who tell others they are going to hell if they do not accept their religion–all say the same thing.

Hopefully the people will go to the interfaith event. Insofar as the Koran burning minister is concerned, the proper response would be for no one to show up. Then he can rant to a few members of his extremist congregation.

Having said all of that, the fascist preacher is free to say what he wants because this is America–just as the Muslims in NYC are free to build their community center.

the problem with citing the crusades, the slaughter of native americans and other such things is that those were hundreds of years ago. i don't want today's islamic crusades. thanks but no thanks. burning books is free speech and should not be responded to with threats of murder as has been done. should make some folks think.

Personally speaking, I applaud this pastor's actions. Not because I tolerate the nonsense that is book burning, but because a line in the sand has to be drawn.

There are people saying "This will cause violence and they will be upset and people will die." That's unfortunate. Put it on the list of other things that cause morons to kill people. Drawing Mohammad, they will be upset and people will die. Burning the Quran, they will be upset and people will die. The US not supporting genocide, they'll be upset and people will die. Tell them that they really shouldn't stone women for leaving their abusive husbands, they'll be upset and people will die. Question anything written in the Quran, they'll be upset and people will die. Suggesting that maybe hanging homosexuals just because they're homosexuals, they'll be upset and people will die.

Where does it end. You're more then welcome to stand off to the side and capitulate to these savages, however not I. I will stand up and fight for my freedom to say that the Quran is nonsense and to burn it if I wish. The same way I'll stand up for someone burning the American flag also. Freedom of expression comes first, people's "feelings" a distant fourth or fifth. If at all.

Islam provides a huge and inspiring goal. Leaders of countries, companies, and religions have all discovered that you can get the most motivation and enthusiasm from your followers if you provide them with an expansive vision — an enormous goal. In the Islamic idea-collection, the goal calls for a continuous effort to expand the domain of Islamic law until the entire world is subjugated to it.

Many religions have the goal of converting others to the faith, but Islam has a method available nobody else has: To expand by seizing and converting governments to Shari'a, or using the method of gaining one small, incremental concession or accomodation after another until Sharia law is being followed.

Once the whole world is following Islamic law, peace will reign. That's why even terrorists can say with complete sincerity, "Islam is a religion of peace."

The Quran says it's better if non-believers accept Islam and become Muslims without force. But if they refuse, then you must do what you can to at least get them to live by the laws of Allah.

So Muslims have been given quite a mission: To create a one-world government. An Islamic world. World peace. It is an enormous and inspiring and motivating goal, and creates a strong unity of purpose.

@ Abu....Hey, just like we shouldn't judge all Muslims by the terrible acts of a few, don't judge all others (Christians, etc) by the stupid words of a few. Judging other people, and name calling, I don't think, is encouraged by Muslims either. There are a few boneheads out there, but don't lump all of us in with them! We are not all animals.

YES you would be benefitting muslims by demonstrating that how frustrated you are at the success & fast spread of Islam . You will be demonstrating your frustration that Quran has no version while other scriptures have many. You would be underlining your fear of the book that is most read & most practiced in the world.

The only way a woman can guarantee her passage into Paradise is if her husband is happy with her when she dies. When I read about this one, I thought, "Mohammad, you are a crafty one."

This idea obviously helps with the subjugation of women. It gives her a strong incentive to subordinate her wishes to her husband's, because while she might have a chance to get into Paradise if she's a good Muslim, the only way she can guarantee she will go to Paradise (and avoid eternal suffering in hell) is to make sure her husband is happy with her when she dies.
