Religious leaders speak out against International Burn a Quran Day

Terry Jones, pastor of the Dove World Outreach Center, stands in front of his church in Gainesville, Florida

Response so far to an event billed as a Gathering for Peace, Understanding and Hope has been "overwhelmingly positive," a minister in Gainesville, Florida, told CNN on Monday. The event is planned in response to a local church's International Burn a Quran Day.

As part of the Gainesville Interfaith Forum - made up of Christians, Muslims, Jews and Hindus - Trinity United Methodist Church will host the event September 10, the night before the planned burning of the Quran.

The nondenominational Dove World Outreach Center said it will host the Quran-burning event on the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks. The group said it will remember 9/11 victims and take a stand against Islam. With promotions on its website and Facebook page, it invites Christians to burn the Muslim holy book at the church from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

"Our hope is that we'll have a thousand people here and there will be 20 people [at the Quran-burning]," Trinity's senior minister Dan Johnson said Monday. Johnson predicted the event would be "multicultural and multifaith." He said he hoped it would inspire a number of people to sign up for the city's interfaith forum. "One member told me after church Sunday that they've never been as proud to be a member of this church as they are now," Johnson said.

In a note posted on his church's website last week, Johnson invited all residents of Gainesville to the counterevent. "We feel compelled to raise our voices to proclaim that the action the Dove World Outreach Center is proposing is absolutely wrong and counter to the life and teaching of the Jesus whom we
love, follow and call savior and Lord."

Wednesday, the city of Gainesville denied a burn permit to the center, said Bob Woods, City of Gainesville spokesman. "It was a question of public safety," said Woods. "The Gainesville Fire Department has notified the center through a letter," he said.

But that isn't stopping the church. The Gainesville Sun reported that, in an e-mail newsletter sent out Wednesday, the church announced: "City of Gainesville denies burn permit - BUT WE WILL STILL BURN KORANS."

Gene Prince, the interim chief of Gainesville Fire Rescue, told the Sun on Wednesday that under the city's fire prevention ordinance, an open burning of books is not allowed. He said if the church goes ahead with its plan, it will be fined. And the church's intentions aren't the issue. "It wouldn't matter what the book is they're burning," Deputy Chief Tim Hayes told the Sun.

"We believe that Islam is of the devil, that it's causing billions of people to go to hell, it is a deceptive religion, it is a violent religion and that is proven many, many times," Dove World Outreach Center Pastor Terry Jones
told CNN's Rick Sanchez last month.

Jones wrote a book titled "Islam is of the Devil," and the church sells coffee mugs and shirts featuring the phrase. On the church's website, a section lists "Ten Reasons to Burn a Koran." The Islamic advocacy group Council on American-Islamic Relations called on Muslims and others to host "Share the Quran" dinners to educate the public during the monthlong fast of Ramadan beginning in August. In a news release, the group announced a campaign to give out 100,000 copies of the Quran to local, state and national leaders.

"American Muslims and other people of conscience should support positive educational efforts to prevent the spread of Islamophobia," said CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper in the release.

The National Association of Evangelicals, the nation's largest umbrella evangelical group, issued a statement urging the church to cancel the event, warning it could cause worldwide tension between the two religions. "The NAE calls on its members to cultivate relationships of trust and respect with our neighbors of other faiths. God created human beings in his image, and therefore all should be treated with dignity and respect," it said in the statement.

"We believe that Islam is of the devil, that it's causing billions of people to go to hell, it is a deceptive religion, it is a violent religion and that is proven many, many times," That honestly sounds like something a child would say. Grow up man.

I think the Quran is uglier than "Mein Kampf" of Hitler, and Islamists are more dangerous than die-hard Communists. In this case, it would be more helpful to tell the truth, nothing but the truth, so that humanity, inlcluding some Muslims, could librate themselves from the yoke of the devil.

Is America taken away by Communists?
On Sept. 30, 2009, the Empire State Building in New York was lit in red and yellow to honor the 60th anniversary of the communist revolution in China, but the owners of this landmark skyscraper are declining to illuminate it in honor of the late Mother Teresa, who would have turned 100 on Aug. 26, 2010. Why does „CNN Belief“ remain silent on this particular subject?

Yesterday, when I heard Ron Paul on CNN defending Islam with a passion, I thought the Texas Republican Congressman is a bigot as well as a bit of a lunatic. The United States, and the world, would be as unsafe as we are now, if not more so, with Paul’s military and national security views.

This man is ignorant enough to say that it was America's fault that 9/11 happened, because Amercians were poking our noses in other countries business.

You may remember that during the Cold War, precisely the same sort of "explanations" were offered by liberals and, later, by left-libertarians such as Murray Rothbard to lay the blame for Communist aggression at the West's (especially America's) doorstep. It was our imperialist provocations around the world that were "driving" the Soviet bloc to "respond" by conquering and butchering millions, building weapons of mass destruction, constructing the Berlin Wall, etc. It was our economic and cultural "imperialism" that was driving indigenous peoples everywhere into the arms of the communists.

I don't have a problem with Muslims...I have a problem with goobers like you who are (1) trolls and (2) who keep saying things like "Bush planned 9/11" and "9/11 was fake" without citing any kind of proof (because you can't) or answering anyone's questions as to your allegations. Truthfully, you probably (most likely) made up the name used here, your real name is Bob Smith, and you probably are a white male, redneck, living in a trailer park somewhere. Except, I guess by saying that I am actually insulting redneck, trailer park, white males. And guys named Bob Smith. Try saying something you can prove next time....give a website, footage of Bush doing the planning, something! You are weird!

It is unfortunate that the church would choose to hold such an event contradictory to Christian morality and values. The burning of a sacred book beloved to Muslims, whom comprise one third of world's population by an established rival religion, is not only sacrilegious but an act of belligerence that "could cause worldwide tension between (two of the major world religions)"- The national Association of Evangelical.
This special effects trailer park circus distracts from a greater issue. That is how do we heal after 9-11. Is it "an eye for eye" or a "tooth for a tooth" and if so whose eyes and whose teeth? Or "shall we turn the other cheek" and walk away and if so where shall we go? The answer lies not in the former nor the latter but in ourselves. 9'11 was an unjustified human tragedy that took the lives of Christians, Jews, Muslims and others. It was done by terrorists with Muslim names and nationalities. Those terrorists hijacked planes, people, our feelings of security and let us not be unfair- the respect of a Major world Religion (Islam). Terrorists terrorize by stealthy creating opportunities of mistrust and fear between peoples. By nature people are mostly afraid of that which is unfamiliar or strange. The more that we strive to build bridges of trust through understanding, tolerance, compassion and mutual respect the more human we become. Lets agree to disagree realizing the beauty, wisdom and divine decree of our differences. America is a melting pot comprised of a stew of individuals of different colors, religions and ethnic orientations each adding its own unique flavor to the mix. So let us not engage in burning books but putting out the fires of hatred. Let the healing process begin!

Wow the ignorance is generally quite shocking. I'm not going to go through every post, but I remember people making up false facts about the Qur'an and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). To all of those who say those hideous things: go read the Qur'an and stop being so ignorant!

And please- cut the crap about islam treating women badly- go read about the numerous rights, and the accomplishments of women in the history of Islam- women only started teaching and having a role in education recently in the West; women taught men in mosques 1000 years ago in the middle east. I know loads of my fellow muslims treat women badly , but I urge you to learn about Islam via reading the Qur'an and other books on Islam as opposed to looking at the actions of a few people.

I am not going to judge christians over what this so called 'christian' is doing; I hope for the sake of peace all of you who have bad ideas of Islam go and find out the truth.

You cant be doing it, coz in every religion there are a few exceptions and you are one among those who is forcing people to do so by doing this. you are also a terror to your own country by your thought of such activity.
I wish and pray almighty Allha (SBT) to give you the thought of reading QURAN, which not only speaks about this life also about your hereafter life.

Maybe Obama could invite Pastor Jones and Imam Rauf to the White House for a beer. Better yet, send the "Ambassador of Death" to Pastor Jones' church to lecture him on the 'benefits of Sharia Law'. (All on the taxpayers' dime, of course). Oh yes, send his wife, too since we're paying for it.

If this happens then I am sure not just florida but the whole nation will start burning. Sea will swallow these people and the people who support them directly or indirectly. The earth will become tight and so small for them and they have no place to run and escape form the clutchs of the creator of the whole universe and the GLORIOUS QURAN.

What always cracks me up is how libs will defend Islam all day long and make crazy comparisons between Islam and Christianity. Both religions are full of crazy people, but I think Islam has the more radical nutjobs.

Some crazy christian kills an abortion once every 2 years or so, but Islamic extremists kill people daily. Seriously, there's no comparison.

Oh, and now I'm going to go exercise my American free speech and draw Muhammad's face on all my toilet paper.

Burning a Koran? Not that long ago Christian groups held multiple burn Harry Potter books and memorabilia. Evil people hiding under the guise of a 'religion' tar's and feathers that religion so much that many millions cannot see Christianity without seeing millions of deaths, terrible atrocity's, physical and cultural genocides, massive book burnings and utter destruction of entire civilizations. Is the Muslim religion headed down that same dark path?

So now we get wall-to-wall news coverage, proclamations of international outrage, aggrieved column inches and bandwidth, and angsty hand-wringing world-wide, all in response to one small group of religious nutbars in Florida who nobody ever heard of before they announced this stupid stunt? The world needs to learn the correct response to trolls – ignore 'em and they starve and go away. Conversely, feed them with attention and just like the Westboro Baptist Church loons, they grow and multiply.

    i will give some hints
    hope i make myself clear.
Do u know that to be a real Muslim u have to believe in Jesus(not as a god as a prophet just like Muhammad), why do we favorise Muhammad because FOR US(i dnt know about you,ur free to believe in what you want even in my country as long as you are not offending me) he is the last prophet that had the last religion ISLAM, in Quran it's not just about Muhammad it's about other prophets as well.
My point is we are not very different the only difference between Muslims and Christians is that u believe in him as a god , we believe that there is only 1 god and that Muhammad and Jesus pray for him just like us(it doesnt matter how they pray but
    at least they pray).

I hope i made myself clear enough i'm not trying to offend any1 if i did this im sry but hope u understood what i meant.
