Opinion: U.S. was born a Christian nation

By Robert Knight, Special to CNN

Editor's note: Robert Knight is a senior writer for the evangelical Coral Ridge Ministries and a senior fellow for the conservative American Civil Rights Union. He helped draft the "Defense of Marriage Act," the 1996 law in which the federal government defines marriage as a legal union between one man and one woman, and is the author of "Fighting for America's Soul: How Sweeping Change Threatens Our Nation and What We Must Do."

Will Bunch's CNN.com tirade earlier this week against television host Glenn Beck and David Barton - the founder and president of WallBuilders, a national pro-family organization that emphasizes history's "moral, religious and constitutional heritage" - for allegedly creating "pseudo history" reveals more about Mr. Bunch than it does about what Mr. Beck and Mr. Barton are presenting.

Man fires pepper spray on church protesters outside Marine's funeral

A motorist fired pepper spray Saturday at a group of demonstrators and counter-protesters outside a funeral for a U.S. Marine in Omaha, Nebraska, police said.

The incident occurred shortly before 10 a.m. (11 a.m. ET) as members of a small Kansas church that protests at military funerals and counter-protesters stood nearly a block away from First United Methodist Church during services for Staff Sgt. Michael Bock, 26, who died August 13 in Afghanistan's Helmand province.

A man in a Ford-150 pickup truck drove by, extended his arm and sprayed with a large can, police said. His vehicle was stopped a few minutes later.

Conservative talk show host Glenn Beck opened his controversial "Restoring Honor" rally Saturday by urging Americans to "turn back to God" and return the nation to the values on which it was founded.

"Something beyond imagination is happening," he told the large crowds gathered at the National Mall in Washington. "America today begins to turn back to God. For too long, this country has wandered in darkness."
