Catholic Church in Belgium details widespread sexual abuse(CNN) - The Catholic Church in Belgium released an independent report Friday detailing hundreds of assertions of sexual abuse of children by clergy and others working for the church from the 1950s into the late 1980s. "We can say that not a single congregation escaped sexual abuse of minors by one or more of its members," said the Commission on Church-Related Sexual Abuse Complaints, which was led by Dr. Peter Ariaenssens, who is both a church investigator and psychiatrist. The commission said it received about 500 reports from alleged victims, about 60 percent of them from males. It cited 320 alleged abusers, of whom 102 were known to have been clergy members from 29 congregations. Thirteen of the alleged victims committed suicide, it said.

Florida pastor calls off Quran burning(CNN) - The pastor of a Florida church says his congregation has decided to call off the burning of the Quran that was to be held Saturday - the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attack on the United States by the al Qaeda terror network. "We will definitely not burn the Quran," the Rev. Terry Jones told NBC's "Today" on Saturday "Not today, not ever." The burning had been planned for 6 p.m. Jones arrived in New York late Friday night and was working to set up a meeting with the imam in charge of the Islamic center planned near ground zero. The planned meeting, Jones had said, helped persuade him to halt the burning.

This observance of the New Year brings the faithful together, for two nights in some communities and one night in others, in services to reflect upon and celebrate the year that has passed and the one that is to come. The shofar – the horn of a ram – is blown, bread is tossed into the water to indicate the casting off of sins, prayers and poems are recited. Then comes the feasting.

Eatocracy: Inside a Kosher BBQ competitionEditor's Note: Over at our sister blog Eatocracy there's a great post about a Kosher BBQ competition. On the last full week of August, I took my wife and five children on a road trip. We were going to be driving in our minivan for more than 18 hours, across six states. Masochistic? Very few road trips with five children aren't. Our inspiration for this trip? Three letters say it all: BBQ. We were headed to Memphis, Tennessee to compete in the nation's oldest and largest Kosher BBQ competition. Kosher BBQ? In Memphis? True enough, in Memphis pork is the undisputed king of BBQ, but at the Anshei Sphard – Beth El Emeth Congregation in Memphis, it's all about beef – Kosher beef briskets and racks of ribs shipped in from a New York distributor to be exact. |
