First images of proposed NYC Islamic center

The group behind the proposed Islamic cultural center near New York's ground zero has released what it is calling the first official images of the center.

The website for the project, known as the Park51 Community Center, said that the "new images display an updated exterior and provide a first look into Park51’s interior and lend some insight on how we’re envisioning the project," in a post that went up Tuesday but that initially drew little notice.

Plans for the $100 million, 13-story center include a 500-seat auditorium, classrooms and conference rooms, space for social events, a 9/11 memorial, a pool and a gym.

Scores of Muslims are already using the Lower Manhattan site as a mosque.

The imam behind the proposed Islamic center and mosque is largely avoiding New York City because of security concerns and is receiving protection from the New York Police Department, according to those close to the imam.

The images of the project were produced by SOMA Architects, which Park51's website identifies as the project's architectural design consultants.

eat your heart out .... it is going to be built ... and it will bring people of different faiths together ... perhaps that's what you really fear ...

It looks rather cool! Something about the whole project, if it really is what they say it will be, doesn't sound like such a bad idea at all. Oh probably I'm the only one who thinks that, I know.

The only thing that could possibly make it better is if they furnish with Functions.cc (Novembre, Magistretti, Starck, and designs by MDF).

It looks like a representation of a mangled crumbling building. The financial backers of this project are just adding fuel to the fire of the opposition. Instead of building something discreet and non assuming like they should have, they have designed something that looks like a 911 victory mosque. The Imam behind this has done a disservice to muslims in the United States.

Huh, it looks like they built a bunch of stars of David into the wall.

I like the part where Americans are ready to commit terrorism and undermine our freedoms even further in response to this building. Do we need any further proof that Al-Qaeda is winning when so many are ready to abandon their principles as part of a flawed reaction?

Looks ugly to me. I've no problem with the center, but it just looks ugly. It might have been nice if they had even hinted at the nature of the surrounding architecture, maybe on the entrance and ground floor and then do the spider-man thing on the remaining floors. Again, no problem with the folks using it or building it, I'd just like them to change the facade.

If you stare at it for a moment it appears to be made of hundreds of "Stars of David". Seems to be an improvement on the neighborhood but a classic mosque design with traditional ceramics and Middle-Eastern masonry and islamic graphic designs and imagry would have been more apealing.

Ew, pretty ugly if you ask me. What a nightmare when you are inside it NOT THAT I WOULD EVER STEP FOOT INSIDE IT. They are having a 911 Memorial????? Or, is it a tribute to the attack?

I am for freedom of religion. But it appears that the imam wants to dedicate this mosquue to the hijackers of 9/11. He wants to name this mosque "The Cordoba Center". In the year 712, in their conquest of Spain, the Muslims built a victory mosque over a Christian church in Cordoba, Spain. What loyal American would want to help the Muslims honor their destruction of the twin towers on 9/11?

Dick you are a smart man, please explain this to the many ignorant Americans who think this is some sort of "peace" center...just as islam has done for hundreds of years....buiding a victory mosque on the ruins of other nations most cherished buildings and temples.............

So, you'll be able to hear the muslim call to prayer at the WTC memorial five times a day. That was one of the goals, and that will be one of the achievements of Al Quada. Imagine the pain and suffering the mourners will suffer hearing that intrusive demand, knowing that the 10 hijackers, whose ashes likely fell on and around this proposed Islamic Center, humbly answered that call; died for that call. One may give them any ignorant name one may wish, the hijackers were devout muslims. Nothing will keep this center from becoming a de facto shrine to those hijackers, who made Islamic martyrs of their fellow muslims they caused to die that day in the name of Islam. Willful ignorance of those basic truths will change nothing. This is an Islamic victory memorial. That is why they will never agree to moving it where the call to prayer can't be heard from the WTC Memoria."

Exactly! How the officials in NY don't see that, just makes me think they're blind. No pun intended!

yea, that's not going to happen, because the thing isn't a mosque. It's just going to have a small mosque inside of it, like the YMCA has a small chapel.

Agh! It looks like a giant bees nest!! Somehow, that does seem fitting for a giant hive of muslims.

I'll start respecting Muslims when they start respecting Christian, Jews, Buddhists, Atheists and so on. I'll start to accept them as equals as soon as they (I know, the radicals) stop killing so many innocent people of all races, religions and ethnicity's.

it's not proposed bozo, it's already a mosque, active with muslims praying every day in it. this whole thing has been blown out of proportion for political gain and will vanish as soon as the elections are over.

I hear so many voices here. There is nothing wrong with building a prayer center near the Twin Towers, which itself was built on top of the graves of the slaves, and on land that was "cleared" of natives, who were subsequently moved to reservations and left to die. (In case you forgotten – all of the USA belonged to the natives. Death follows the towers.

When Buddhists monk commit suicide we revere them; when a 7 yr boy hurls a rock at a Merkava tank bearing down on him and his family we label him as a terrorist. When Christians commit crimes we do not call them Christians – just criminals and convicts. What would you call the priests who molested boys all these years? Christian pedophiles – would you want them in your neighborhood? And we welcomed the Pope at the state level. Thats laughable – our children mean less to us than ground zero rubble that we are trying to sanctify.
