First images of proposed NYC Islamic centerThe group behind the proposed Islamic cultural center near New York's ground zero has released what it is calling the first official images of the center. The website for the project, known as the Park51 Community Center, said that the "new images display an updated exterior and provide a first look into Park51’s interior and lend some insight on how we’re envisioning the project," in a post that went up Tuesday but that initially drew little notice. Plans for the $100 million, 13-story center include a 500-seat auditorium, classrooms and conference rooms, space for social events, a 9/11 memorial, a pool and a gym.
Scores of Muslims are already using the Lower Manhattan site as a mosque. The imam behind the proposed Islamic center and mosque is largely avoiding New York City because of security concerns and is receiving protection from the New York Police Department, according to those close to the imam.
The images of the project were produced by SOMA Architects, which Park51's website identifies as the project's architectural design consultants. |

While I support the Park51 project and believe that Muslims should be welcome to build where they buy land in America, I think the building is just plain gaudy
A people are judged by how they uphold their principles not in times of convenience but in the most inconvenient and difficult situations. The bigotry and ignorance you exhibit against this mosque is shameful to all Americans who truly appreciate what this country stands for. I am proud to say that as a New Yorker this mosque shows how superior American values truly are to others of whom fear has taken a hold and allowed to mire their character a nation (See France outlawing the abaya, Switzerland bans minarets)

The recent poll on which CNN reported, showed that most Americans (especially the devout) are essentially clueless when it comes to religious knowledge. This forum reinforces the results of that poll. How very, very sad. Plenty of adrenaline, very little cerebrum.

The real concern for our country is the use of our freedoms by persons not fully integrated into our culture that follow a religion that applauds murder and chaos. See this man's earlier quote: Abudu Mukarram – Get a life noway. The mosque will be built and your tax dollars will pay for the protection while we pray 5 times a day at the mosque.
Right now they have proposed murderous violence against US citizens because France is trying to deal with their no conformist nature. If they wish not to conform, they need to return to the place of Allah or expect second class citizenship.
Islam does not applaud murder or chaos. infact it is the opposite. Islam encourages preservation of life and law and order. Allah says in the Quran, taking one life unjustly is like killing all of humanity. and saving one life is like saving all of humanity.

@Ray: People who practice hinduism are called "hindus". One of the languages they speak is hindi. And the disputes between hindus and muslims on the border of India is a long standing conflict of decades which does not show that hindus are completely peaceful people either. I think the fear that you keep demonstrating is from the ignorance of the history of different world cultures and religions.

I'm not even sure if Allah Hurka-Durka wants these clowns in His presence. All finger-pointing of terrorism aside, even the 'good' Muslims are told to rise and kill in global Jihad when the call beckons them. As a member of the "wicca" movement, I too am being accused as not being poart of the bigot culture. Sny one who believesw in the words of Jesus, Mohammed, Abraham, Zoraster, Buddha, or the founder of any other established religion would welcome and cheer the coming of a nice community center in NYC even one only a few blocks from ground zero as the biggots call it. Let's hope is gets built poste hase, the pople of NYC, especially in that prt of town need it.
