Woman charged for destroying controversial Jesus art in Colorado

Editor's note: A lawyer for Kathy Folden, who was charged Wednesday by Loveland, Colorado police with criminal mischief - a felony - said she will plead not guilty.

“Kathy is an ordinary American with some sincerely held religious beliefs, and like a lot of Americans and a lot of people in Colorado she was pretty upset by some of the displays at a city-owned museum,” one of her attorneys, Cliff Stricklin, told CNN Friday.

“The real issue is the city of Loveland, which is not supposed to be endorsing or belittling religion,” he said. “They specifically endorsed a piece that belittled Jesus Christ.”

Striklin said that Folden will challenge the charge on the basis that a felony is supposed to involve destruction of more than $1,000 worth of property. “There’ no way the state can prove that this piece was worth over $1,000,” Stricklin said.

Folden, 56, of Kalispell, Montana, was released from jail Thursday on $350 bail. Striklin said that this weekend she will return home, where the mother and grandmother works as a long-haul trucker.

    Any of you ever get an angry moment and break something? Snap a pencil in half, throw a cup, hit the wall with your fist...??
    Mayby she just saw it and lost her sense of rational thinking at the time. Have any of you seen this "work of art" It is nothing but a piece of p-o-r-n, with Jesus as its star! Horrible!
    Yet if there was a nice picture of the Baby Jesus in a manger painting, I am sure some body would be calling the ACLU to have it removed...or some atheist people would be calling for its removal.
    Just plain hhypocrisy!

      @Sandman

      "Angry Moment"... Really...? I could be wrong here, but as I understand it, this woman drove...hmmmm almost 1,000 miles with a *crowbar* in hand and destroyed personal property. Sounds like pre-meditation to me. Not just an angry moment.

      But, I digress.... It isn't about breaking the LAW or any such non-sense like that. How silly of everyone to think so.

    I really wish we would stop abusing children with religion, let them be kids. Just maybe they won't grow up like many here – brainwashed. Then again, religion likes them young – cult brainwashing lasts longer.

    Wish I was there to have seen it happen. I'm so sick of people making fun of Christianity. All other religions and books are off limits, but its okay to thumb your nose at Jesus Christ. Think again.

      I would never thumb my nose at Jebus! I can't, he's nowhere to be found!

    As a Dadaist, I completely agree with this woman's actions. All art must be destroyed!

    Are we really surprised that a person who devoutly engorges in an obvious fallacy (argumentum ad ignorantiam) would behave in such a juvenile manner? I think a fitting punishment would be to make her take and pass Art History 101 at the local university. "That'll learn her!"

    What is the difference between a fanatical christian woman destroying a work of art on display, and the Taliban destroying a picture of Buddha?

    October 10, 2010 at 1:16 pm |
    • Kate

      @Lee Oates

      The Talib wouldn't have let a woman do it, and they don't foam at the mouth as much?

      Just guessin'

    • Dan

      Was the picture of Budha put up to specifically annoy and offend?

      Please note the difference....

      That's more like the Muslim approach! Don't like someone's opinion, rough 'em up or kill 'em!

      Do I have to share my country with people like you?

    "Kathy is an ordinary American..." I have to believe ordinary Americans are better than that. Kathy's actions clearly express her hate, ignorance and arrogance. What makes her think she has the right to destroy what she doesn't have the capacity to understand? Where does such poison come from?I wouldn't want to be inside her head for a nanosecond.

    October 10, 2010 at 1:10 pm |
    • Dan

      You don't want to get inside her head, but you quick to denounce what goes on in there.

      Does that make you an idiot or a hypocrite? Can't remember....

    Todays fanatical and backwards politics and radio "personalities" has given allot of folks license to act out fanatical acts. They have been empowered to go forth and destroy, with their very own hand, and sometimes with guns of course. Way to go america. Sad refection and our children are watching, mostly in embarrassment as they see all other countries move forward.

    I'm gonna find out what school her grandchildren attend and go rip their crappy finger paintings off the wall. As a professional artist, their Hillbilly kitsch offends me greatly.
