Pope: Church feels 'shame and regret' for abuse

Catholic priests who sexually abused children "disfigured their ministry" and caused the Catholic Church "profound shame and regret," Pope Benedict XVI wrote Monday, in one of his strongest statements to date on the scandal facing the Vatican. "

What has happened should make us all the more watchful and attentive," the pope wrote in an open letter to men studying to be priests.

But he insisted that it is still good to become a priest and that celibacy still "makes sense."

"Even the most reprehensible abuse cannot discredit the priestly mission, which remains great and pure," he said.

Campaigners for victims of abuse by priests immediately rejected the  statement as "minimizing" and "mischaracterizing" the crisis, which has seen  thousands of victims come forward from across western Europe and the United  States.

"The pope's pronouncements on abuse are getting worse, not better," said  Barbara Dorris of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP).

"Using words like 'recently' falsely suggests clergy sex crimes and  cover-ups are a relatively new problem. They are not," she said in a statement.

"Using the past tense falsely suggests such crimes and cover ups are  behind us. They are not," she said.

"Using words that ignore the stunning recklessness, callousness and  deceit by bishops falsely suggest that bishops are innocent in this mess. They  are not," she said.

"Tragically, while kids are being molested and crimes are being  concealed, the pope deliberately mischaracterizes and minimizes the wrongdoing  of the church hierarchy, while passively sitting  back waiting for the scandal to explode in yet another nation somewhere on the globe," she said.

Benedict in his letter defended priestly celibacy, which some have said is a reason some priests abuse children.

"All of us know exemplary priests, men shaped by their faith, who bear  witness that one can attain to an authentic, pure and mature humanity in this  state and specifically in the life of celibacy," he said.

He urged new priests "to practice the fundamental human virtues, with  your gaze fixed on the God who has revealed himself in Christ, and to let  yourselves be purified by him ever anew."

Three independent investigations have been launched into the abuse of  children by priests in Ireland, while police raided the headquarters of the  Catholic Church in Belgium and a church-government working group has been set  up to tackle the problem in the pope's native Germany.

There have also been accusations of abuse in the United States, Italy,  the Netherlands, and other countries.

Critics say the problem is not only the abuse itself, but the cover-up of  the problem by bishops.

The right majors that are to be implemented by the concerned Churchs are:
We have mentioned that one of The solutions for child abuse has to allow marriage for the priests and nuns. The Church has to consider allowing their followers the divorce between married couples, since God did not say of remaining married unable to be divorced living or kept married even if separated. Keeping them married against their will with out love or respect for each other, when the condition is that they are to live as couple in peace with love and respect for each other or are to be divorced peacefully gaining back their freedom otherwise this way we condemn them to unrest living in dungeon of wars between souls.
Then it is essential that the divorced couples should be allowed to remarry whom they may become to love to be with for years or the rest of their lives.
Since not allowing that would lead to further acts of adultery or your worst of fears.
Unless it is as the forbiden fruit being more desired? Human Nature? Whether Apples or Barries.
Give space to all God did not forbid and be tougher meajors on the things God has Sinned.
May God guide all to rightous.Amen

How should disputes and offenses be dealt with
between believers in the church fellowship?

In Matthew 18:15-17, Jesus established a procedure to be followed in the event that a brother would commit a sin or offense against another Christian. Many Christian scholars believe that this is one of the most neglected teachings of the entire Bible. It's been said that if all believers would simply obey scripture, to go and confront their offenders in the manner Jesus gave, it would solve over half of all problems which exist in the church.

It is important to confront those brethren who have trespassed against us for the following five reasons:

    (1) To resolve misunderstandings. Most offenses in the church result from misunderstandings and many could be quickly resolved if offended parties would just go to the source and find out the facts. Unfortunately, some offended people will just absorb the offense silently, while growing bitter and resentful. It is important to God, and a matter of obedience to His Word, that such issues are confronted.

    (2) To maintain peace in the body of Christ (Eph. 4:1-3). Whenever there is friction and turmoil between believers it affects the whole body. It hinders people from entering into worship and receiving from God's Word. It creates an uninviting atmosphere for visitors in the church, it may hinder people from coming to Christ, and can even grieve the Holy Spirit (Eph. 4:30-32).

    (3) So Satan cannot gain advantage over us (2 Cor. 2:10-11). For our own spiritual well-being, we must be quick to resolve our differences with brethren and forgive. Satan can hinder our spiritual life, and even deceive us into apostasy, through harbored bitterness or unforgiveness (Matt. 18:35).

    (4) So that the offender is held accountable — to not repeat his actions to harm the faith of others (Matt. 18:6). Persons who bring offense against you are likely to repeat similar acts against others. Confronting their offensive behavior may cause them to restrain their actions from causing further offenses.

    (5) To restore a fallen brother (Gal. 6:1). Christians must make every attempt to restore brethren who fall into sin. Especially when the transgression has been committed against us, our love for our brother's spiritual well-being demands that we confront the brother so that he might be reconciled to God.

How to deal with the trespasser: The following scripture is how Jesus taught for Christians to confront those brethren who have wronged them.

Matthew 18:15 "Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother.
18:16 But if he will not hear you, take with you one or two more, that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.
18:17 And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector."

First, Go to your brother privately (Matt. 18:15). If a fellow Christian has sinned or brought an offense against you, Jesus said for you to first go to the offending party, confront him with the offense, and keep the matter private between yourselves. Remember, the objective is to not merely to seek justice for a violation against us, but to seek "reconciliation" with our brother, and his restoration to a right relationship with God.

Why is the matter to be first kept private between you two? Because our love for our brother requires it. If we are sincerely committed to love for our brethren as Jesus commands (John 13:34), then even if a brother has sinned against us or has done us wrong, we will not want to maliciously injure that brother's credibility within the body — that might hinder his restoration. If this person's transgression against you is circulated within the body, but later he repents, many in the body will have already judged this brother and the accusations will have damaged their opinion of him. By spreading our accusation against an offending party, it builds a consensus against them and makes it difficult, if not nearly impossible, to restore that person to the body should they repent and desire to make things right.

Also, many alleged trespasses between brethren are a result of "misunderstandings." We need to first investigate the facts and find out for sure whether a trespass has really occurred. This is another reason why you are to first go privately to the brother or sister in question — to confront them with the alleged offense and hear their side of the story. If we disclose the offense to friends in the body, we may later discover that the matter was only a misunderstanding. But by then, their reputation will have been damaged by our allegations.

Many people foolishly allow themselves to become offended by misinterpreting other's intentions, or listening to rumors and secondhand information which always contain distortions or exaggerations. Many offenses could be immediately resolved by confronting the offending party and hearing their explanation. You'd be surprised how many people are so immature that they don't even bother to investigate the facts or hear the other side of the story. Don't ever forget, "There are always two sides to a story," and never assume you know the truth of a matter until you've heard both sides.

I can guarantee that there would be far fewer misunderstandings in the body of Christ if people would be firmly devoted to love for their brethren. Love for the brethren gives us a desire to believe the best in our brother, giving him the "benefit of the doubt," instead of jumping to conclusions and always expecting the worst. The Bible says "If you love someone... you will always believe in him, always expect the best of him" (1 Cor. 13:7 TLB).

If the trespass is proven valid, and he or she repent's for their misdeed, you are to express your forgiveness (Luke 17:3-4). Let the matter be forever ended, and carry no resentment toward them. Remember, if they repent, but you continue to harbor bitterness, you too become a perpetrator of sin (Matt. 6:14-15, Acts 8:23, Eph. 4:31-32).

Second, take another brother (Matt. 18:16). If your private attempt fails to resolve the issue, you are then to take one other Christian and again confront the offending party. The presence of another Christian is as a witness to strengthen the serious effect of confrontation, to collaborate the exhortation of scripture, to amplify the Lord's presence in the meeting, and to verify the exchange of testimony.

Third, tell Church leadership (Matt. 18:17). If the first and second attempts fail, Jesus said then to "tell it to the church." This doesn't mean the "entire" church body, as this could cause unrest or damage the faith of young believers. The meaning is that the church pastors or elders are then to bear responsibility in dealing with the offending party.

Finally, if these three prescribed attempts fail, we are no longer required to entreat them with the courtesies shown to brethren. They may be dealt with in the same fashion as we would a heathen or publican (Matt. 18:17).

What to do if you trespass: If you are aware of any trespass you have committed against your brother, you have a responsibility to go to him and seek his forgiveness. Should you not attempt reconciliation, this will hinder your relationship with God. Your worship, your prayers and service to the Lord will not be acceptable. "Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift" (Matt. 5:23-24).

Note that the scripture says "if your brother has something against you." In other words, you might not feel that you have legitimately violated your brother or sister. But if you are aware that "they" harbor an offense against you, you still are obligated to go and try to resolve the issue. Be willing to be humble and submissive to others, even when you don't consider yourself to be at fault. Don't be so rigid and self-righteous that you stand in the way of a brother or sister's reconciliation with you or with God (Rom. 15:1-3). Offer your unpretentious, sincere apology for any unintentional offense and make every effort to reconcile, so that your relationship with God will not be hindered. Whether or not they pardon you, you have done your part and released your soul from blame.

"the pope feels regret" ? Now that is a lie. In fact the RCC pays top notch lobbyists to ensure victims are denied justice.
Many victims committed suicide and others mentally ill today, and the Pope hides from them. In fact the pope blames the gays, petty gossip, ..
As a victim of violent abuse including a gang soddddomyyy by 4 priests at age 9, I've been denied all rights. Guess the catholics love to hate the victims with the pope.

Don't tell the names unless you are sure they cannot discover your personal information from those facts.
Some of these "apologists" have a black, ugly hate in their words that is as plain as day to me.
Those names would not help the discussion, nor would it prove anything in particular, so I would prefer you minimize your risk by keeping mum on the details.
I believe you, and that's enough for me. They believe you, too. That's why they want to find you. They seek a target.

Raison, your post is silly at best. If I was as plotting and devious as you think, I would already be able to find Pete. I'm a computer guy. He claims part of the scandal is that peds were not exposed. Well here he goes not exposing 4 of them that he says abused him. One a current bishop. So yes it would prove something. It would first prove he is not a hypocrit with regard to the coverup.

If this is one of the Pope's strongest statements against abuse within the church, it is pathetic. I agree with the member of SNAP. It mischaracterizes the abuse and the church's involvement. And this line is the best: "It is the responsibility of your confessor and your superiors to accompany you and help you along this path of discernment." Really? Odd talk seeing the pains they go through to avoid responsibility at all costs.

I don't understand why Priest and Nuns have to be celibate but that's not saying much, I don't understand why people believe religion. Now that the Pope feels ashamed and regretful (about being caught) what is the church going to do about it?

    October 19, 2010 at 10:43 am |
    • DaLe

"I don't understand why Priest and Nuns have to be celibate but that's not saying much, "

Besides the personal – emotional and spiritual – sides, it is so they don't spend all their time looking after the children of theirs. The/any church is then like their family, which of course makes it difficult for them to speak out or stand up about/against wrong, just as in about every family really.

"I don't understand why people believe religion."

Believing beliefs indeed seems like a silly thing to do.

"Now that the Pope feels ashamed and regretful (about being caught) what is the church going to do about it?"

In areas where Priests still act as (first-aid) doctors, it would be quite useful so or so to see (more) professional doctors instead. Obviously, there should be a parent or other non-child family member in the room when a doctor comes to see a child-patient, or the child is taken to a hospital or a doctor's praxis.
In education, especially regarding boarding schools, teachers in general shouldn't have access to the accomodation of children or students. School/class trips should always have more, if not all, female adults accompanying the children. Teachers shouldn't have the authority to make anyone stay after class. Where pupils/students need help with learning or understanding stuff, it sure would be nice if children of the same age or a bit older would be there to help them without turning it into some form of clientilism. Especially in elementary schools, it should be possible to see everything in classrooms being anywhere in those classrooms.
In church-life, for confessions there are these confession booths, where a parent or other family member can wait outside, in viewing distance respectivly. Concerning ministrants, they should be old enough to defend themselves if it should come down to it.
Parents shouldn't be shy to accompany their child to the various activities, and be there where and during the activity is taking place, it might take part in now and then, and it should be rather mandatory where a child is taking part in something for the first time, to check it out. Regarding forms of domestic violence where a partner (and child/ren) in marriage is(/are) abused, knowledge about nature's magic, a.k.a. poisons, could help if no other alternative is available.

The bishop in my New York Diocese claimed there were only a few, his contribution to John Jay. In fact this bishop saddddoommmiizzed me at age 8. Victims claim there are almost 20% of child molesting priests in my diocese, more accurate data coming from victims.

I write this more accuratly for you.

Both sides of the Celibacy vs a Man marrying a Woman claim that their Ideology makes sense, and yet when it comes to the original Scriptures that the Apostles and Prophets wrote and lived, both their Ideologies are wrong, and casting off the Truth taught in the Scriptures and engaging in either Celibacy or their Traditional Marriages has consequences that are devastating. Both sides take part of the Truth and cast off the Rest of the Truth, and form their own Doctrine and Traditions that do away with the Truth, and this reveals the Truth of the saying, “Who are you that judges another, for wherein you judge another, you are guilty of doing the same thing.”.

1st your English Bibles were not Translated from Hebrew or Aramaic or Greek, they were Translated from Latin Texts which were mistranslated, and were used by the Roman Emperors to Justify themselves for throwing the Gods and Lords that were called and anointed by Yahweh our Creator, into the Lions Dens and Gladiator Rings of Rome, and the Catholic Church was built on those mistranslated Latin Texts.

It was People who held to their Emperor’s misguided Belief, mistranslating the Plural Hebrew word Elohim, and the Greek Class Ho Theos, which both mean Gods, that they mistranslated as a Singular Deus or God, that crucified Yahshua who they call Jesus.

They mistranslated the words that mean a “Sire,” as “Husband,” and cast off the foretold Baal, that is the Hebrew word for a “Husband “of an Ekklesia meaning the Called out, or a Church, which are to become the Bride of Christ, meaning the Bride of Anointed, not a Building. Both the Males and Females are not Married unto each other, but are both Married unto one or the other of Two foretold of Husbands as their Anointed Brides or the Bride of Christ, and the Males are appointed as Sires to Sire Children in the Wives that they are appointed to care for, and our Creator Yahweh says, “You shall no longer call me Baali, my Husband, but you shall call me Ishi, my Sire.” As our Father, not our Husband, Yahweh Sire us as his Children in Mount Zion, and Yahweh said, “I said that you are Elohim, Gods, Sons of the Highest of all.” The Adam King foretold of by Yahshua, who Prepares a Wedding for his Son, are Two foretold of Husbands that are not our Creator Yahweh, and we are to be One Wife with the Husband that we are espoused unto by Yahweh, meaning One Wife like as One Nation, having a common goal or unity under Yahweh our God. The Bishops were suppose to be appointed as Sires of One Wife, meaning a unified Family, because all Israel was allowed to take and be appointed as Sires of more than a single Woman, which was called to Wife them, like Abraham and Jacob and David and Solomon and many others did that are recorded in the original Scriptures, the original Doctrines of the Marriage to one or the other of two foretold of Husbands has never changed, your Bibles were mistranslated by them who forsook Yahweh and his Son, his Messiah Yahshua, which means the Anointed Yahshua that you call Jesus Christ.

The mistranslated Latin Texts were Translated directly into English falsely making it look like Yahweh Creates Darkness and Evil, when in Hebrew “Bawrah” and the Greek word “Epoiesen,” mean “to Finish,” not “to create.” Your English Bibles say, Isa 45:7 “I form the light, and CREATE darkness: I make peace, and CREATE evil: I the LORD do all these things. “ But the Hebrew and Aramaic and Greek all say, “I framed Light, and FINISHED Darkness, I made Peace, and FINISHED Evil, I Yahweh do all this.” In Genesis 1:1 the Hebrew and Aramaic and Greek do not say the Elohim “CREATED the Heavens and the Earth” like your Latin and English Tests falsely imply, but Hebrew and Aramaic and Greek says, “Within the Woman's Fruit FINISHED Elohim associate the Heavens and associate the Earth, …,” meaning that about 6 thousand years ago there was a War, as Elohim who later said that all Adam who were made in the image and likeness of Elohim, has become alike one of Us, acquainting both Good and Evil, the Good and Evil Elohim Warred and FINISHED the Heavens and Earth killing all that lived therein, and causing utter Chaos, and Lucifer and his followers became the Elohim of Darkness, as Darkness settled upon the surface wakes and Spirit Yahweh from Elohim upon the surface of the Waters brooded and awoke Elohim from among the dead, and Elohim obeyed the voice of Spirit Yahweh, and commanded to birth Light, and birth Light, and Elohim saw associate that Light the related Good, and Elohim divided among between the Light and among between the Darkness, so now we are Children of the Light, we are Elohim of Light, called Day, and the Evil are Children of Darkness, they are Elohim of Darkness, called Night.

Yahweh Frames Light and Finishes Darkness, and Makes Peace and Finishes Evil, so that when they who deceived all the Earth to worship Elohim instead of Yahweh our Creator like as was foretold about them, say “Peace, Peace, Peace,” like as is foretold in Thessalonians by the Spirit speaking by Paul, then sudden destruction comes upon them without a remedy.

1st your English Bibles were not Translated from Hebrew or Aramaic or Greek, they were Translated from Latin which were mistranslated, and were used by the Roman Emperors to Justify themselves for throwing the Gods and Lords into the Lions Dens and Gladiator Rings of Rome, and the Catholic Church was built on those mistranslated Latin Texts.
It was People who held to their Emperor’s misguided Belief, mistranslating the Plural Hebrew word Elohim and the Greek Class Ho Theos, which both mean Gods, as a Singular Deus or God, that crucified Yahshua who they call Jesus.
They mistranslated the words that Mean a “Sire” as “Husband,” and cast of the foretold Baal that is the Hebrew word for Husband of the Church which are the Bride of Christ not a Building. Both the Males and Females are not Married unto each other, but are both married unto one of the other of Two foretold of Husbands, and our Creator Yahweh says, “You shall no longer call me Baali, my Husband, but you shall call me Ishi, my Sire.” As our Father not our Husband, Yahweh Sire us as his Children in Mount Zion, and Yahweh said, “I said that you are Elohim, Gods, Sons of the Highest of all.” The Adam King told about by Yahshua, who Prepares a Wedding for his Son, and Two foretold of Husbands that are not our Creator, and we are to be One Wife with them, meaning like as One Nation, a common goal or unity under God. The Bishops were suppose to be appointed as Sires of One Wife, meaning a unified Family, because all Israel was allowed to take more than a single Woman to Wife like Abraham and Jacob and David and Solomon and many others did that are recorded in the original Scriptures, the original Doctrines of the Marriage to two foretold of Husbands has never changed, your Bibles were mistranslated by them who foresook Yahweh and his Messiah Yahshua that you call Jesus Christ.
