Christian woman sentenced to death for blasphemy in Pakistan

CNN's Reza Sayah and journalist Nasir Habib filed this report:

A Christian woman has been sentenced to  death for blasphemy in Pakistan, two police officials told CNN Thursday.

Asia Bibi was convicted of insulting Islam's prophet, Mohammed, while  working in a field with several Muslim women in a village southwest of Lahore.

She told them the Quran was "fake" and made comments about one of  Mohammed's wives and about his health in his final days, the police complaint  against her said.

She said that "the Quran is fake and your prophet remained in bed for one  month before his death because he had worms in his ears and mouth. He married  Khadija just for money and after looting her kicked her out of the house," local police official Muhammad Ilyas told CNN.

The initial complaint against Bibi was filed on June 14, 2009, by a  Muslim cleric, Ilyas said.

Police say the Muslim women reported the incident to Qari Muhammad Salim,  who later filed the police report. The cleric claims Bibi confessed to him and  apologized.

Muhammad Iqbal, a senior police official in the district of Nankana  Sahib, said she also was fined the equivalent of $1,100.

Police say Bibi was charged with breaking section 295-C of Pakistan's  penal code, which says: "Whoever ... defiles the sacred name of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) shall be punished with death, or imprisonment for life, and shall also be liable to fine."

Former Pakistani Supreme Court Justice Nasir Aslam Zahid told CNN he  doesn't recall a death sentence ever being carried against someone convicted of  breaking Pakistan's anti-blasphemy laws.

Death sentences in these cases are almost always overturned by higher  courts on appeal, he said.

Death sentences are carried out by hanging in Pakistan.

CNN has not yet been able to contact Bibi or her family directly. It is not clear when the sentence was handed down.

Pakistan is more than 96 percent Muslim, according to the Pew Forum on  Religion & Public Life.

The religion of peace is at it again! This is why we are islamophobic...not because we are racist (islam isn't a race), but because Islam is simply incompatible with Western democratic ideals.

She said that "the Quran is fake and your prophet remained in bed for one month before his death because he had worms in his ears and mouth. He married Khadija just for money and after looting her kicked her out of the house,"

Oh please, that's nothing. Dowry is an old concept. A perhaps she left herself? Eventually, this is how the reply could look like:
"the Bible is faker and your prophet remained in dirt for one month before his death because he had worms in his ears, mouth and ass. He bought the apostoles with money and slept with their wives after he sent them out."

295-C of Pakistan's penal code: "Use of derogatory remarks, etc; in respect of the Holy Prophet. Whoever by words, either spoken or written or by visible representation, or by any imputation, innuendo, or insinuation, directly or indirectly, defiles the sacred name of the Holy Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) shall be punished with death, or imprisonment for life, and shall also be liable to fine."

That's kind of an expression of love, but there is no blasphemy but blasphemy to Allah. No need to have Mohammed as idol. 295-C should be taken out. 298-A makes sense though – wouldn't want to make Mohammed angry.

What 298-C is about is a more complex issue, and absurd what violence is concerned. What I would like to point out is that "or preaches or propagates his faith" was the other side of the coin at a time and place in history when non-Muslims didn't keep personal hygiene (mentioning it because of the water-fetch-drink-and-back-in-history-bacteria-spread issue), and Muslims trying to teach anything were deemed as missionaries or such.

This is how radical muslims do think. I pray for that innocent woman. The whole story was no doubt twisted to make them look like the good guys. I wonder how many muslims in the U.S. think that this is right. A woman should die because she insulted another person's religion? That happens to Christians everyday who believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Who accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Who believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for their sins. Oh yes, if one dares to speak the truth that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and our Savior, woooh, we are instantly condemned and a right wing radical. Well, let me say very clearly that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, who died on the Cross for our sins, and if you ask Him in your life to be your Lord and Savior, and ask forgiveness for your sins, you will be saved and will go to heaven when you die....if you chose not to...your fate is already in place. There is a heaven and hell...it is up to you where you chose to go.

Just another example of typical muslim behavior that we had better nip in the bud before it grows any larger in our western lands

Praise the Lord. I read the blog of someone who apparently knows this woman personally, and she maintains that what happened is the following: someone asked the woman for her views on Muhammad, and she avoided the question, saying, basically, 'I know what Jesus has done – given his life on my behalf – but I don't know what Muhammad has done.' And someone or other add two and two and got five thousand, and the situation is what it is. God willing, the truth will come out and the situation will come to a peaceable end.

    don't think it was Confucious

    Check Luke 6 chapter 31
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you

As an aside, someone brought up the witch hunts and the inquisition. Read God's word and you'll find that these believers were disobeying. Christians who are obeying the word of God live in peace. Muslims who obey are in a state of Jihad. Don't tell me that all religions are equal, sorry, they're not.

I do know that this is in the Bible

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you

What she said was rude but that is not an excuse for a death sentence. People should have freedom of speech and religion.

Here we have to put up with some Christians who cannot deal with biological truths (though other countries have this same problem with the some Muslims) and some Atheists who can question every belief but their own (especially when it come to denying the Inquisition-like practices of Atheists in 20th century Russia).

But it is worth it not to have BS laws like that. Killing someone just for expressing his or her opinions is not just.

Why are we giving this barbaric country which exports terrorism abroad and abuses minorities internally, billions of dollars in all kinds of aid? Why don't we just leave Afghanistan and Pakistan and let them kill each other?
