Christian woman sentenced to death for blasphemy in Pakistan

CNN's Reza Sayah and journalist Nasir Habib filed this report:

A Christian woman has been sentenced to  death for blasphemy in Pakistan, two police officials told CNN Thursday.

Asia Bibi was convicted of insulting Islam's prophet, Mohammed, while  working in a field with several Muslim women in a village southwest of Lahore.

She told them the Quran was "fake" and made comments about one of  Mohammed's wives and about his health in his final days, the police complaint  against her said.

She said that "the Quran is fake and your prophet remained in bed for one  month before his death because he had worms in his ears and mouth. He married  Khadija just for money and after looting her kicked her out of the house," local police official Muhammad Ilyas told CNN.

The initial complaint against Bibi was filed on June 14, 2009, by a  Muslim cleric, Ilyas said.

Police say the Muslim women reported the incident to Qari Muhammad Salim,  who later filed the police report. The cleric claims Bibi confessed to him and  apologized.

Muhammad Iqbal, a senior police official in the district of Nankana  Sahib, said she also was fined the equivalent of $1,100.

Police say Bibi was charged with breaking section 295-C of Pakistan's  penal code, which says: "Whoever ... defiles the sacred name of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) shall be punished with death, or imprisonment for life, and shall also be liable to fine."

Former Pakistani Supreme Court Justice Nasir Aslam Zahid told CNN he  doesn't recall a death sentence ever being carried against someone convicted of  breaking Pakistan's anti-blasphemy laws.

Death sentences in these cases are almost always overturned by higher  courts on appeal, he said.

Death sentences are carried out by hanging in Pakistan.

CNN has not yet been able to contact Bibi or her family directly. It is not clear when the sentence was handed down.

Pakistan is more than 96 percent Muslim, according to the Pew Forum on  Religion & Public Life.

The religion of Islam is just horrible. All religion (except Buddhism) have their own form of oppression and intolerance. But Islam is a hard core evil oppression.

Crazy crazy islam. Some time ago, there was a news piece about a man in Pakistan sentenced to have a brick wall fall on him. Who was the judge, Wile E Coyote? The stoning sentences in other muslim countries are really dark age stuff and have very sadistic additions for women. Some peaceful muslims in this peaceful muslim country blew up a police station today. Every day it is one sick thing after another with this crowd. Great when more of them are imported into the US and we get to celebrate their diversity some more. In just the last 10 years, they already killed thousands in the US, hundreds in Europe, and blow up other muslims on a daily basis in muslim land.

Let me know when you stop driving an oil eating car. You can also let me know when you no longer care about tracking down Osama and the AL Q organization. At that point we will no longer have to barter or suck up to the Middle East and it's neighbors. Until you do that. The embarrassment is yours.

"Please name one person suffering under the evil influence of the Buddha, other than yourself of course"

There are some pretty nasty extremist Buddhists, you know. Aum Shinrikyo, for example.

    November 11, 2010 at 3:28 pm |
    • Jmacq1

Aum Shinrikyo is not a Buddhist organization. A simple web search can tell you that...it's quite literally it's own religion. It incorporates some elements of Buddhism, but it also incorporates some elements of Christianity (indeed their leader basically claims to be the second coming of Christ), and I highly doubt you're going to claim they're Christian, are you?

This is why i have a problem with Islam and not other religions. If I make fun of jesus christ, christians might be be offended but they don't have "laws" saying I must be killed. The same goes for jews, hindu, buddists, etc. Islam is the only religion where those who practice it think they have a RIGHT to kill me for what I say. In response, I say I don't want to live next to those choose to practice their religion this way.

Stop muslim immigration to the western world
    Deport illegal muslim immigrants
    Outlaw Islam in the west.

    November 11, 2010 at 3:27 pm |
    • Debbie

The reason Christians don't have laws doing similar things is because there's no country as yet ruled by "Biblical Law." There is a vocal minority of fundamentalist Christians in this country who want exactly that. Just google "Dominionist theology." Make no mistake: a country ruled by ANY kind of religious law would be intolerant of personal freedoms.

Are you completely clueless or what? WHAT ABOUT THE VATICAN? It's a theocracy, rules by the "Bible" and a host of addendums, and does not admit of any freedoms that oppose it's religious tenets.
If you visited the Vatican and they decided you were a minion of Satan, no one could stop them from seizing you and dragging you into a torture chamber...you have no rights, no justice, no mercy, no recourse, no diplomatic immunity, nothing can save you from them if you enter their country.
No one would ever hear from you again. No one would even know what happened to you. They are not required to inform the world of their "internal affairs".
Now tell me if that's wrong according to international law, because the internal politics of a theocracy are like those of any other country, including ours.

      November 11, 2010 at 4:42 pm |
    • Threed

Debby what do you think the vatican is, its a country that is rulled by religion, and no they dont kill people for talking bad about any religion or belief.

    • Frogist

@markv: And the american citizens who are muslim? Do you have a final solution for them?
Well said, Debbie. Uninhibited religious rule of any single viewpoint results in oppression.

      November 12, 2010 at 1:24 pm |
    • Jmacq1

Congratulations...your "steps for success" would only make the radical Muslims win.

Your solution for the intolerance of radical Islam is to become as intolerant as they are? Way to pitch the principles of the United States straight out the window, there, buddy.

News flash: 90%+ of the Muslims in the world live peacefully and have no intention of killing "infidels" in the name of their religion or otherwise. Within the United States it's closer to 99.9% of Muslims. They're just people, doing what they can to make sure they have a roof over their head, food on the table, and clothes on their back, regardless of where they might live. The average Muslim doesn't agree with the terrorists of Al Qaeda any more than the average Christian agrees with the bombing of abortion clinics or the murder of doctors that practice the procedure (both of which have happened in the name of "Christianity").

Unfortunately there are FAR too many people that are allowing the actions of the lunatic fringe to color their perception of over a billion people. If "Islam" were really at war with the Christians, we'd have been fighting a massive worldwide war for decades now. ANd for the "wait until they're living in your neighborhood" crowd...well, my neighbors are Muslims. They've been nothing but polite and helpful with me, and I'm reasonably sure they're not planning to kill me in my sleep.

For all you morons out there that lump Islam and Christianity together as if they were similar, please educate yourself. Yes, both religions hav had followers that did terrible things (though as bad as they were the crusades happened because of what muslims were doing in Christian/Jewish lands), there is no comparison to what the actual faiths teach, believe and uphold. The Quran not only condones murder and radical behaviour, it commands/teaches it. Christianity, and the New Testament, is the exact opposite and forbids it. So when Christians conducted witch trials and the Inquisition, they were wrong and not following the tenants of Christianity and what Christ taught. Don't you see the difference? Christianity is by far the most loving and universal religion and has been responsible for much of the good in the world, even if at times some followers behaved in opposition to it's teachings. Just as there is no comparison between the cult of Islam and Christianity, there is no comparison between the warmongering pedophile Mohammad and Jesus Christ. Educate yourselves with the facts before blathering.

Your criticism might be correct if Christianity was about the teachings of Jesus.

      November 11, 2010 at 3:45 pm |

Cite your passages or shut up about Islam. They are a lot alike. I suppose you are leaving out the old testament, right? Where the slaughter of whole nations was commanded by God. Or that JC said that we should kill our parents to follow him? That is how certain very powerful right wing Christians think. They admire Hitler, Stalin and Mao for getting kids to do that. Listen, you all, our religions are being used against us. We have to get down to basics. Most religions, including Islam, have been instructed by their prophets to love your fellow human beings as your self. All else is commentary.

Patrick, I can't recall any place where Christ said Kill the Infidels... that comes to mind pretty quickly.... The operative word in his teachings was love and forgivness..... It is easy to "kill" someone that offends you ... try forgiving them... Christians are human and human nature is what it is ... but the teachings are not bad ... just the people.... Islam has a different problem... Mohammed did tell his followers to kill the infidels ...

      November 11, 2010 at 4:28 pm |
    • Frogist

@Patrick: You speak truth. It all boils down to "Do unto others...", "Love they neighbour..." the people who can't see that are just trying to one up each other and the most important part of their philosophy gets ignored in the name of feeling superior.

I have to agree with Patrick here. I can cite so many instances in the Bible and yes primarily the old testament (but that doesn't change the fact that it's in The Bible) where mass murder is sanctioned by God that you have no case and Drake's argument thus is basically one of "my religion which has just as many sanctioned murders as yours is better than yours...so there."
