Westboro Baptist Church says it will picket Elizabeth Edwards' funeral

Editor's Note: This report comes from the CNN Political Ticker.

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church announced Thursday plans to picket Saturday's funeral for Elizabeth Edwards in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The Kansas-based Church – monitored by anti-hate groups such as the Anti-Defamation league and the Southern Poverty Law Center – is known for its extremist opposition to homosexuals, Jews and other groups.

The church members also oppose the War in Iraq.

According to the church's website, members will hold a protest from 12:15 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Edwards, the estranged wife of presidential candidate John Edwards, died Tuesday after a six-year battle with breast cancer.

It is only a matter of time before some outraged citizens seriously harm this group of wing-nuts who have gone out of their way to insult those in pain from the loss of their loved ones. Personally, if they did that to my son, daughter or parent, I would stop them physically, and I.m not normally a violent man.

Mrs. Edwards was 100% American through and through. These sick cultist morons think they can use the veil of religion to openly hate decent people. Most citizens should see this as a major issue. Another option: Take a stand, find out where they are congregating that day to stage and ->Peaceful<- counter-protest. (Peacefully! Remember you're trying to prove they are low on the moral totem pole and have no support with those who have some!). This woman deserves a quiet funeral for the sake of her children, if not just to grant a good person a final goodbye she was worthy of.

If all else fails, I'm sure the Hell's Angels would give a bit of their time to watch the gates of the cemetary... sure they would not tolerate these invasive fools at a funeral after what they have done at military funerals... just a random thought

Personally, I think they all should be gunned down for this! But in this country, some courts have already said they are protected under the 1st admendment......then again, so is burning our flag in the streets! Actions like these should NEVER be protected under ANY admendment! Our justice system is so corrupt that its rediculous! These court systems that say this is fine, should have all of their funding revoked....and the judges disbarred from practicing law in any state permenately!

take away the tax exempt status and stop calling these people "Christians." Nothing they do display the teachings of the Bible. Were I a lesser man I would poop on the steps of their church. Asses!

Why do you keep reporting this? If they don't get publicity there protests will be irrelevant! You are adding validity to their statements by publishing photos of the signs and talking about them.

For God's sake, people need to keep their political/social ideologies away from funerals. Yeah, that's a real Christian thing to do - protest and picket at a funeral while the family (inclusive of children) is in mourning. The same goes for the idiots chanting slogans like, "thank God for dead soldiers" at the funerals of veterans. It's thoughtless, rude, even plain sick. You want to picket and protest? Great, but unless you are a total @ss, take it somewhere else where people aren't already in pain from the loss of a beloved family member.

With no help from any of us, these so-called Christians will rot in hell. Nothing we say or do here can change that. Too bad so sad. Oh well.

they need to be baptized in a holy fire practice, she Edwards had nothing to do with a war and they are gone too far. I wonder how many of their family memebers are war vets did they do the same to their funerals.? Fire training days are needed to practice fire hose control lol

This church group is a whack job. I am sorry that they are cloaking themselves under the cover of being 'Christians' because they don't seem to know the truest meaning of the word.

We would be all better off if the press would stop given them air time – it just feeds their delusions. If they want to stay in Kansas and pray to God that fine – it is their house of worship. But we don't have to contribute to their air time and give them free press.

Ignore them and eventually they will lose their support and go away. I just hope God is more merciful to them than they seem to show to total strangers. Or maybe he shouldn't be. Won't they be surprised on judgement day?

The only thing a religious freak understands is retribution. If some religious fruitcake tried to interfere with my mothers funeral they would meet my favorite baseball bat.........Its time to ban religion worldwide

Everyone go to g105 or bobandthe showgram.com. This is a Raleigh NC radio station. They got this crazy lady to call in, and they posted the church's flyer. It's so sick and awful. I called the church's # at the top of the flyer, and gave them a piece of my mind. The radio station isnt supporting them in anyway, just showing how sick they are.

God Bless her children and may Ms.Edwards rest in peace.

These "religious" people are nothing but terrorists! They should all be arrested and tried as terrorists.

Is it not time for everyone to start a email campaign to the two Senators of Kansas and the Representative of the district that this church group belongs to to show everyones indignation as to what is happening and maybe these so called representatives will find a way to stop this idiocy.

I'm wondering if members of the Patriot Guard have been invited to attend Mrs. Edwards' funeral. These riders are awesome, and I'm sure they would provide some privacy for the people in mourning. As for the Westboro protestors, there are simply no words to describe these people. Each and every one of them wastes oxygen by living.

I have been in touch with a couple people I know in Patriot Guard as well as moto people from the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer and Komen 3-day...unfortunately, I'm not close enough to get there, but I'll keep my fingers crossed that there is a counter to these crazies.

Westboro Baptist is not a church. Churches are representative of God. Hatred is not a Godly quality. IF these people worship a god at all, which I rather doubt, I believe it is themselves and their own egoes that they bow down to. Or Fred Phelps. It is my belief they will all be shown the error of their ways when they die. Too bad they're harming all these innocent people beforehand.
