New imam quits embattled Islamic community centerBy Allan Chernoff, CNN A Park51 imam announced his resignation Friday, just three weeks after being appointed to his post at the embattled Islamic community center in New York, according to a written statement Friday. "I wish the project leaders well," said Imam Adhami, saying he needed more time to complete a book meant to assist English readers in understanding the Quran. His resignation comes on the heels of a controversial post on his website, sakeenah.org, in which he claimed that "an enormously overwhelming percentage of people struggle with homosexual feeling because of some form of violent emotional or sexual abuse at some point in their life." Park51 officials later attempted to distance the community center from Adhami's comments, tweeting that "Adhami's personal statements do not reflect the position of p51." The community center - located two blocks from the ground zero location in Manhattan - describes itself as an inclusive community center open to anyone, with the goal of integrating Muslim-Americans into U.S. society. "We have been humbled by Imam Adhami's contributions to this project over the past few months," said Park51 President Sharif El-Gamal. "We look forward to him, God willing, leading prayers informally for Park51 in the near future." His departure is the latest in a string of setbacks after former Imam, Feisal Abdul Rauf, was given a reduced role in the center. Rauf remains on the board of the community center. |

When are we all going to stop dancing around this polital correct crap? Islam is the enemy of the US. They want to eliminate us all!!
Cowered already you are dying even before any one gets to you, that is cowerdness ! If you had any bravery and faith in God you shouldn't fear any body or any thing coming up....cowerdness make me sick..
To the knuckle head that used budhism as a religion. Budhism is a way of life not a religion
All you racists go to hell! When you see that Jesus was black, will you call him a ni–er
What a cowinkydink!!! I' leaving my job because I need more time to complete a book meant to assist Muslim readers in understanding the Torah!!
So his thinking is right in line with most Christians and Republicans. It's a wonder these people don't get along better, as they seem to hate the same people.
All this fighting and arguing between religions is utter nonsense. If you take the time to read history and religion, you'll find that Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are three movements of the same basic religion. All claim themselves to be sons of Abraham, because all of them are just that! All three movements also have roots in violence, with the Jews justifying war with the "chosen people" rhetoric, the Christians justifying violence with rhetoric that they are saved from sin by Jesus, and the Muslims justifying violence with rhetoric about jihad for Allah. All three religions have goodness in them, but all three also have the seeds for violent manipulation of their followers. For thousands of years, none has found the way out of violence because each has the roots of violence at its core. Why should the world suffer from the tainted roots of Middle Eastern religion? If this one religion of three movements does not have the capacity to unequivocally renounce its own contradictions in violence, then perhaps it's time to move on to another set of beliefs that work for the good of all mankind.
all three religions try to internalize violence, so that the believers restraint themselves from going overboard. Like the atheists and other Godless people. Islam is a practical everyday religion. It does not prohibit violence, because, violence is in human nature. It does not prohibit se x either, because that too is in human nature. Instead Islam CONTROLS the violence and the se xual urges of its believers. And channels them in the right direction. Se xuality is channelled into a healthy wholesome family value system that treats women with respect and dignity as mothers and sisters. Violence is channelled towards evil doers. Whoever succ umbs to evil and satanic impulses is on the receiving end of violence.
As such Islam is far superior to atheism and other man-made attempts at defining violence. World War One, World War Two, Nazi Genocides, Stalin Purges, Chinese Communist Purges are prime examples of what happens when there is no religion to control and channel violence. Massive massive death results.
Religion is a disease of the Mind! Be part of the cure, not the problem!
Help cure the religion disease!
"I wish the project leaders well," said Imam Adhami, saying he needed more time to complete a book meant to assist English readers in understanding the Quran.
I thought that was Obama's gig!
Islam needs to be erradicated from america oh and u can take the lying muslim that is in thewhite house with u.
All abrahamic religions need to go extinct. They offer nothing to a society.time for a resurgence of heathen might. Trample the falsehoods of abraham and his imbred fanatics. Humanity's fate was cast in atone the day they chose to follow the ways of man, rather then nature.
To commentor #2 – so is Christianity.
The imam must be upset because anderson cooper got his ass beat (and not in a gay way) in Egypt.
Can't get anyone to rid this dead horse any farther. Since is was a crummy idea in the first place, I'd call this a good outcome.
So, CNN's "reply function is broken AGAIN.
My earlier commnet is @YBP
when religious leaders enter the political arena that is when they should have started taxing them. The moral majority started up during Reagan and they have been involved in politics ever since. Tax like every body else.
Oh look, another religious "leader" masking his prejudice with religious beliefs and crack "evidence" about LGBT people.
Good riddance, loony. They should try and find an imam with a respect for everyone and a grip on secular society instead of some macho bigot who is going to further polarize people on the issue of the Park51 project.
Good riddance. The last thing we need is another religious leader spewing hatred and false statements about other groups of people.
People need to stop hiding by religion to mask their blatant hatred for others.
Just Google ISLAM RELIGION OF PEACE and then see what is really going on in the world. I'm just sick of them saying they are peaceful.
Yes it is a religion of peace, any Muslim butchering an animal would say the name of God and use a very sharp knife for that to make it quick for the animal to die with out suffering! And the same applies in their kills.
Compared to christianity and atheism, islam is indeed much more peaceful. World War One, Two, Jewish Genocide, Stalin Purges it would take muslim terrorists 1,000 years to kill as many people as christians and atheists have killed in just those four events in a short span of 30 years!!
Islam, a religion of peace? Haha!
You just made me spit my Pepsi on my computer I laughed so hard!!
On a serious note. When my friend was 13 and living in Iran, she and her friend were playing and her friends hair accidently slipped out of her head dress. A cop saw this and called them over. Being kids they ran, and her friend was sprayed with automatic gunfire in the name of Islam.
Explain this please!
Islam has not done as much damage as atheism because of its lack of ability (so far).
Lets not forget that the people of Pakistan want to kill anyone who take the Mohammeds name in vain.
Hey people of Pakistan, I hate Mohammed, he is a dork!
Takethat! Takethat!
They can't get along with each other, why should anyone expect that they can get along with other folks. They=muslims.
1:7
The Way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace , not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger (such as the Jews), nor of those who went astray (such as the Christians).
