New imam quits embattled Islamic community center

By Allan Chernoff, CNN

A Park51 imam announced his resignation Friday, just three weeks after being appointed to his post at the embattled Islamic community center in New York, according to a written statement Friday.

"I wish the project leaders well," said Imam Adhami, saying he needed more time to complete a book meant to assist English readers in understanding the Quran.

His resignation comes on the heels of a controversial post on his website, sakeenah.org, in which he claimed that "an enormously overwhelming percentage of people struggle with homosexual feeling because of some form of violent emotional or sexual abuse at some point in their life."

Park51 officials later attempted to distance the community center from Adhami's comments, tweeting that "Adhami's personal statements do not reflect the position of p51."

The community center - located two blocks from the ground zero location in Manhattan - describes itself as an inclusive community center open to anyone, with the goal of integrating Muslim-Americans into U.S. society.

"We have been humbled by Imam Adhami's contributions to this project over the past few months," said Park51 President Sharif El-Gamal. "We look forward to him, God willing, leading prayers informally for Park51 in the near future."

His departure is the latest in a string of setbacks after former Imam, Feisal Abdul Rauf, was given a reduced role in the center.

Rauf remains on the board of the community center.

Im a Christian,i believe in love & understanding,i believe in the love of God & his son Jesus. I believe his word when it says love your brother(& sisters) meaning your fellow man just as Christ loves us,gay or straight, christian or jewish or muslim or agnostic. Why do we spew such anger & hatred at each other? Why do we judge when we are all flawed?

Islam is a counterfeit, just as all of Satan's other efforts are counterfeit. Real christianity is about following and emulating the teachings of Jesus...that's all.

People need catholicism, christianity and islam because they are afraid to die and are afraid of letting go of this world. i agree with one poster that someday in the future those 3 will be understood as nonsense.

@OutsideObserver: You're wasting your time trying to talk sense to any of these nut cases. A thousand years from now they will be bickering like children over stuff that happened before they were born. Instead of making amends and moving forward together they would rather insult eachother and continuously look backwards. Some people are just really sad.

I see a lot of finger pointing here. If we can agree that killing, slavery and hurting another human is wrong, then we have to agree that some of the religious texts we read are misinterpretations of God's word. There are many incidences of slavery or stoning being condoned by God and I don't believe either would be condoned by a creator that "is good all the time". If God is infinite in righteousness and knowledge then one book cannot be big enough to carry the entire message. A book with law or building codes has more information in it than any holy book. Even the ten commandments has slaves as being something that should not be coveted by another person. Many believers think the world must be brought to the brink of extinction so their respective messiah can return. It's dangerous to allow someone like that access to nuclear weapons. Can't we just be decent to each other for a change? That would be the true miracle.

I think Charles Dexter Ward's wife or girlfriend probably left him for some Muslim man... its really the only explanation for posting such ignorant, and hate fueled statements... she probably got tired of watching NASCAR

And I am sure the book will be just fascinating. I can hardly wait. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ I don't believe the B.S. in MY cultures book, why the heck would I waste my time on one even more backwards and brutal?

Who cares about these hate filled monsters anyway. They shut themselves up in their schools and masques and preach hate and killing to weak minds. Only religion and hatred could entice a person to wrap TNT around their body. They should all be airdropped over their own holy land on the other side of the world.

    > for the new things we in America can actually purchase
    > If life around the globe was as comfortable and courteous as America

Once America turns into fascist Germany, all your self delusions will disappear. Germans used to talk like you too! Until their addiction to commercial war making and other economic bad habits caught up with them and they turned into the horribly sick Nazis. Courteous? Americans? Are you trying to be funny?

    • Reality

Courteous Americans? Hmmm, no, but thanks to their War on Terror and Aggression, the world has some semblance of peace.

      To wit:

An update (or how we are spending or how we have spent the USA taxpayers’ money and blood to eliminate global terror and aggression)

-Operation Iraqi Freedom- The 24/7 Sunni-Shiite centuries-old blood feud currently being carried out in Iraq, US Troops killed in action, 3,481 and 924 died in non-combat, 97,172 – 106,047 Iraqi civilians killed as of 8/10/2010 mostly due the Shiite and Sunni suicide bombers.

      – Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan: US troops 1,116 killed in action, 902 killed in non-combat situations as of 08/10/2010. Over 40,000 Afghan civilians killed due to the dark-age, koranic-driven Taliban acts of horror,

      – Sa-dd-am, his sons and major he-nchmen have been deleted. Sa-dd-am's bravado about WMD was one of his major mistakes. Kuwait was saved.

      – Iran is being been contained. (besides containing the Sunni-Shiite civil war in Baghdad, that is the main reason we are in Iraq. And yes, essential oil continues to flow from the region.)

      – Libya has become almost civil. Recently Libya agreed to pay $1.5 billion to the victims of their terrorist activities. Apparently this new reality from an Islamic country has upset OBL and his “cra-zies” as they have thre-atened Libya. OBL sure is a di-sgrace to the world especially the Moslem world!!! Or is he???

      – North Korea is still u-ncivil but is contained.

      – Northern Ireland is finally at peace.

      – The Jews and Palestinians are being separated by walls. Hopefully the walls will follow the 1948 UN accords. Unfortunately the Annapolis Peace Conference was not successful. And unfortunately the recent events in Gaza has put this situation back to “squ-are one”. And this significant stupidity is driven by the mythical foundations of both religions!!!

      – Bin La-d-en has been cornered under a rock in Western Pakistan since 9/11.

      – Fa-na–tical Islam has basically been contained to the Middle East but a wall between India and Pakistan would be a plus for world peace. Ditto for a wall between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

      – Timothy McVeigh was exe-cuted. Terry Nichols will follow soon.

      – Eric Ru-dolph is spending three life terms in pri-son with no par-ole.

      – Jim Jones, David Koresh, Kaczynski, the "nuns" from Rwanda, and the KKK were all dealt with and either eliminated themselves or are being punished.

      – Islamic Sudan, Dar-fur and So-malia are still terror hot spots.

      – The terror and tor-ture of Muslims in Bosnia, Kosovo and Kuwait were ended by the proper application of the military forces of the USA and her freedom-loving friends. Ra-dovan Karadzic was finally captured on 7/23/08 and is charged with genocide, crimes against humanity and violations of the law of war – charges related to the 1992-1995 civil war that followed Bosnia-Herzegovina's secession from Yugoslavia.

      – And of course the bloody terror brought about by the Ja-panese, Na-zis and Co-mmunists was with great difficulty eliminated by the good guys.

To hate or pollute your fellow man is to hate and pollute yourself. We as the human race should all be ashamed poisoned by are warped minds imperfect and all at fault in some way of form psychological, physically, and verbally. To think we are civil when really we are monsters . One day we will all cease to exist for not taking responsibility for or actions and loving one another unconditionally.

I was in NY a few months ago, and I went to the location of this future mosque. It is way too close to ground zero....there is no reason it should be there. It is in the middle of a financial district, where nobody lives. The muslims are trying to make a sick, dimented statement of victory by locating this mosque here. They have no interest in using this mosque to "integrate" muslim and american culture. I hope an earthquake happens right about at the location of this proposed mosque. These people are sick.
