Your Take: Does the Bible condemn homosexuality?

There were thousands of comments on Thursday's Belief Blog post arguing that the Bible condemns homosexuality, a response to another guest post arguing that the Bible is much more ambiguous on homosexuality than previously thought.

Most of the comments appear to doubt the Bible's condemnation of homosexuality - or challenge the wisdom looking to the Bible for guidance on such matters. And, as usual, we're struck by all the atheist comments. They seem to far outnumber believers' comments.

Josei
Interesting that gay is a sin. However, I never see the "correct" religious people fighting to save families and male-female marriages. Are you out there condemning those "straight" couples who cheat, beat and abuse one another, then flee a marriage? No, you don't. But, yet I see you "correct" religious people fighting to keep gay couples from being married in even a civil union when straight marriages are trashed every day.

Why does my son have to learn at school that being gay is cool and OK? Tell you what, no praying in school and no brainwashing our kids that being gay or transgender is acceptable?

As a Christian, I know the No. 1 rule is to not to play God ... which means not judging! We all have our prejudices, which is human nature, but I try very hard to not judge. Here's a very simple rule that makes it easy:

You can look at your neighbor and decide that you would NEVER do, act, or speak things that they will do, act, or speak ... but they are looking at you thinking the same! None of us are perfect, and we ALL do things the Bible says not to do (including abominations like eating pork, shellfish, gold, etc..)!

Like Sirena I have read the Bible multiple times. I was raised Catholic, parents were religious educators and lectures ... I think reading the Bible, front to back, and not just the little snippets you get on Sunday, would turn most reasonable people away. It is so full of contradiction you have to suspend belief to believe. How can you take one "instruction manual" and wind up with so many "products"? It's ridiculous.

John
I've read the Bible many times since I became an adult in the early '80s. I grew up a Catholic, later was a "born again," then still later was a member of another Protestant church. My conclusion after thoughtful reading, prayer, meditation, and living life: It's well-writtern fiction; it has some good rules to live by (much of the New Testament) and some that are so heinously dated (most of the Old Testament) that they should be illegal. This thing, as a whole, was not written by the hand of any God I want to worship.

So CNN wants people to argue about this? I mean really..what was the point of the article other them to draw people from both sides into a debate? Is this to get some kind of big ratings on CNN website? Seems like to me this has been debated long enough and people really have other things to worry about right now, like whether to buy food or gas for the car to get to work to buy the food..or gas..:( That is if they are lucky enough to have a job...

But you at CNN honestly want us sitting here for hours getting all mad at each other and wasting our time talking to people who already have their minds made up..instead of maybe doing something constructive with our time like spending it with those we know and love instead of arguing with complete strangers...

I took five minutes typing this...my time IS important and that is all you are getting CNN..(how about an article asking people on ways to come up with more jobs? Something that would make a positive differences in everyone's lives).

Of course these blogs are for nothing but attracting people to their site and selling advertising based on the numbers. This blog is just a place for CNN to cash in on crazies who have nothing better to do with their day than bash away at each other. The stories that are placed here are chosen to bait certain groups into screaming.

Look at the recent topics: Muslim radicalism in America, two stories on whether the bible condemns ho-mose-xuality, France's burqa ban, three stories on Fred Phelps. All incendiary. Of course you are being manipulated into outrage, and that activity is used to sell advertising.

These blogs serve no positive purpose in public discourse. Moreover, I severely doubt they are effective in selling the advertisers' products either.

Not that I have anything against gays....but just wanted to comment to the accuracy of this article that implies old testament is irrelevant
    1) you are implying judaism is irrelevant?? becoz they only adhere to the old testament...i completely disagree.
    2) Mathew 5:17-19 is very clear on not breaking the law of old testament.....roman catholics have broken every single thing ...and now it comes to bite them. get ready to walk your sons down the aisle for holy matrimony of man & husband.....lol

All religion is irrelevant, because all religion is based on non-existent gods. All religious people know that all the other religions are wrong and false. On that count, they are right.

If there is a god, he invented cancer, the holocaust, pedophilia, murder, torture, Ted Bundy, Jack the Ripper, and on and on. He created them all, made it all happen, knowing the results of his creation.

      Jesus' Truth versus satan's Lies.

Jesus's teachings of truth to learn to how to take responsibility for your thoughts/beliefs, words, actions versus satan's lies teaching you not to take responsibility for your thoughts/beliefs, actions.

Basics learned to live by versus continued in depth studying to live by.

Free will. Choosing which to live by. Free will to be confused about a subject you learned the basics of or refuse to learn and not study or free will to understand all that He teaches. Christians study His teachings for a lifetime because our views change as we age and experience life. What we read in His scriptures at 13, 20, 30, 40 etc. changes as we chronologically age and read the same scriptures, Jesus unveils more of His teachings. The more we read and comprehend His truth, the more He reveals His truth.

The Bible is a childish book, ignore it. Would any one care so much if Aesop's fables had gay stories in it. That might be interesting, this isn't.

Didn't Jesus himself say that the road to life was narrow and cramped and only a few would find it? The broad road led off into destruction and many were going in through it. So, most of the world is made up of Christendom. So, Christendom can't be God's chosen people. Also, Jesus was nothing like "Christians" today. Jesus was a humble meek man who was approachable and kind to all people. In fact people tried to kill him because he ate with "tax collectors and sinners". But he said the ailing need a physician, not the healthy. He didn't swear or curse at people who didn't agree with him. THat's not being Christian. Jesus said to "return evil for evil to no one". and to "turn the other cheek". He wouldn't approve of people using his name to further hate speech. That's not right.
THere's alot of opinions here, I just wanted to say that.

Again with the hatred. Please, people. Just because we are posting to a faceless discussion board doesn't give us the right to stop treating people like humans. I'm a Christian, but I won't berate you for believing something different. And if you agree to not berate me or make fun of my beliefs then perhaps we could have a good conversation... and maybe prove that people aren't that bad after all.

    March 5, 2011 at 3:18 pm |
    • Alvin Throckberry

I tend to agree with you, Jeff. I originally came to have an intelligent discussion, but as it turns out, blogs are not the place for that. The moment I identified myself as an atheist, I was subjected to nothing but derision, scorn, and condescention.

I agree with your desire to have a good conversation, but your post seems to see only the non-Christians as berating. As such, I would politely ask that you take note of how berating and abusive and intolerant the Christians and Muslims and other religious folk here are too.

This is not the place for an intelligent conversation.

This is the best definition of Christianity I've ever read. It sums it up perfectly.

"The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree..."

And people think that Scientology is weird...

Actually, HeavenSent and Justina's Jesus was a bit "touched". After all he thought he spoke to Satan, thought he changed water into wine, thought he raised Lazarus from the dead etc. In today's world, said Jesus would be declared legally insane.

Or did P, M, M, L and J simply make him into a first century magic-man via their epistles and gospels of semi-fiction? Most contemporary NT experts after thorough analyses of all the scriptures go with the latter magic-man conclusion with J's gospels being mostly fiction.--

T-party. I don't listen to preachers or priests teach His truth because I don't attend church with the exception of attending weddings, baptism, funerals, etc. family/friend gatherings. I haven't belonged to a church since I was in my early teens. I just read the Bible on my own because not only is it Jesus' truth, it's the most fascinating book ever written. Now, don't ask me, like others that I should read other books. I do, and I have. Especially in college ... and I have bookshelves of text books to prove it because those professors have a system going, change a word and you can't use a "used book" in their classes. ugh, or else I would have been able to sell all my books each semester.

Well, since this debate with non-believers goes no where ... you will never comprehend what I just said, until you find it out yourself.

      I've got to go.

t-party, what you don't realize is that god loves HS so much he actually lets her speak for him. He even lets her make up new parts of the bible. Didn't you read her new chapter about what really happened in the garden of eden? Now, with some people, you'd suspect them of just making stuff up to feel important. But not HS. Nosirree. HS is gods favorite and she even gets to decide who goes to heaven and who goes the other way. Why else would someone make the claim to be sent from heaven? What a humble soul.

    • HeavenSent

tallulah13, just because you don't read the Bible, or if you do/did, you didn't see what is in scriptures is not my problem. God is truth. Satan is lies.

Truth is good or righteous teachings that allows a person to take responsibility for their thoughts/beliefs, words and actions in life when conducting what is good for the person as well as all others involved. Whereas, satan teaches lies being unrighteous thoughts/beliefs, actions which the person believes said lies to be good for them only, do not take responsibility for anything action that occurs and care less what they leave in their wake to others.

What part of my simplifying the above do you still not comprehend?

Peggy, if I didn't care about people, I wouldn't tell you His truth. I have just as many debates with g-friends as I do straight friends. I also have Christian friends that actually read the Bible. Go figure? Either way, which ever friends are in a conversation with me get the same treatment. Hear what His truth written in the Bible and my listening to the lies they believe. Plus, I have a lot of g-friends that are Christian and no longer in any relationship, not to mention same $3x relationship and we debate His truth to sharpen our knowledge on His truth. Carnal thinking never comes in those spiritual discussions about Jesus.

      HeavenSent,

"The only people that detest Jesus are those that don't want to give up their sinful ways."

Muslims say pretty much the same thing... replacing the name, 'Jesus', with Mohammad / Allah in their pronouncements. They have the same absolute assuredness as you do that they are correct. They have every bit as much fire and passion as you do. You don't believe in their stories and quotations, do you? According to them, you are lost. Both cannot be right; but both can be wrong.

      March 5, 2011 at 5:51 pm |

Jesus teaches us right (truth = His teachings) from wrong (lies = satan and his teachings) actions. Right is His righteous teachings which are spiritual to erase the carnal thinking (wrong or unrighteous teachings from satan who is a liar) which is controlled by the flesh. Wrong is unrighteous thoughts/beliefs, words, actions taught by following satan who is a liar that feeds on urges of the flesh.

Eric G., just because you are brainwashed to believe g-'s are born that way, does not detour that g-people are that way because they choose to live a life of lies Oh, boo hoo, they cry "why won't anyone believe me how hurtful it is for us to live this way". Give me a break with the sympathy mantra. You care less what people think, say or do. For if you did, you'd stop doing sin and repent. But, noooooooooooooo. Free will. Remember? G-people follow satan and are just as blinded as the one they worship for he too was blinded by the sin of PRIDE, GREED, LUST, throw in the rest of the sins as you age. What part of these sins do you not acknowledge, never mind comprehend, never mind repent to Jesus and ask Him to forgive you and wipe the slate clean of all your sins ... and then sin no more? Nope. Can't do that because then we won't have fun sinning through our lives. No, no, noooooooooooooooo. Let's convince everyone we were born like this so we can continuing sinning our lives away (and that's a factual statement).

Talk about NOT taking responsibility for your thoughts, beliefs, actions. Hey, satan never did, so why should anyone that follows him do so, either. Satan will continue doing what ever he pleases until God sends him to the eternal flames ... then it's zap, zap time. No more evil and the one's that follow his ways meet the same fate.

Just because a person believes they were born a kangaroo doesn't make it true. They can continuing living their life of lies believing themselves to be born a kangaroo. Truth, they were born a person in male form or female form. Whether the person accepts how they were born is why they lie and take on the other form for which they were not born. Then cry and complain God did a horrible thing to them being born the opposite of what they wanted to be.

The good news is ... after we leave this earth and our bodies go into the ground and our souls and the intellect of our souls = spirits go back to God who created us, there is no human flesh to concern yourself with.

How can it be that anything divine, or "Heaven Sent," could condemn anyone for something as trivial as what they eat, how they worship, or who they love. This type of thinking is purely human, or if there is any spiritual influence, it would be from a spiritual element whose objective is to divide us, to create conflict and animosity, and maybe even to distract us from our divine purpose.

    March 5, 2011 at 12:16 pm |

How absolutely eloquent! You are my hero of the day! Of course HeavenSent is steaming at you right now! And will surely find some bible quote to throw at you! Well, klgrider, I can tell you haven't read His truth either. I suppose you think the sin in the Garden of Eden was Eve eating an apple (LOL). That's what you get for never reading the Bible on your own and listening to those that can't hear, speak nonsense. God does condemn those that do evil. Period. What do you not understand of His truth? Oh, that's right. EVERYTHING! As for dividing individuals, you joined the wrong team to be concerned about that now. To believe this type of thinking is purely human. Again, that's what you get for not reading His truth on your own but be guided by others that are misguided.

Some day, if any of you folks get passed your sinful ways, read the Bible, then we can have a true discussion. Other than that ... it's a mute point with all of you and the lies you hold dear as truths.

As for Peggy, no need to sit down. You'll be holding on as the flames hit you.

Sorry, that I sound mean to you. It's not my nature. But, I'd rather tell you truth than to have you continue buying into lies and hence, loose your souls. Christians are NOT suppose to stroke your egos to make you feel good about the lies you buy into. That's satan's job.

God Bless all your souls and listen to other Christians as they told you to talk (meaning pray) to Jesus ... ask Him to forgive you of all your sins you know about, all those that you didn't know were sins or remember. Ask Him if you can get close to Him. He will take it from there.

Other than that I refuse to lie to you allowing you to stay in a bubble that will destroy you mortal soul.

Omgawd you are too much! What exactly did Eve do that we are still talking about it today? Please don't answer that, it's rhetorical. Now what about all these priest that m o le s t children? if they repent it's ok? Or really in bible it was ok to do this sort thing wasn't it. Hmmmm the bible is a nasty fairly tale isn't it? Or do you just skip those passages about r a pe & mur der? The bible is jsut another book? if it was written today it would sit dusty in an amazon.com warehouse!!

The sin that no one speaks about in the Garden of Eden is Eve got seduced and impregnated by satan. Cain is satan's seed and Abel is Adam's seed. Hence, Cain slew his brother Abel. Twins by different seeds.

God's wrath was that Adam and Eve listened to satan (beguiled) and didn't listen to God's truth.

The same as it was in the beginning is the same as it is today (the end of this generation) ... people being beguiled by satan ... listening to his lies and not believing or learning Jesus' truth. It's the same reason why phony folks preach His truth ... so the average church goers believes their lies and never pick up the Bible to read Jesus' truth. All the Books in the Bible are important to everyone to understand what's going on in the world ... from the beginning to the end.

Jesus' teachings are spiritual so that you conduct righteous thoughts/beliefs to follow through with righteous actions.

Righteous means, what is good for the person and all other people involved.

Unrighteous means, what is good for the person only and caring less what happens to all others involved.

Aka ... selfless versus selfish, right versus wrong.

You learn this from other teachings today in the world. They all come from Jesus' teachings in the Bible but call it another name. Right behavior from wrong behavior. Righteous behavior versus unrighteous behavior. Good versus Bad. Truth (Jesus) versus Lies (satan).

You will get the exactly same results by praying to a rock as you will get praying to any god.

And on those occasions that you pray to the rock and get the result you desired, you can claim you have proof that rock-god is real, that your faith was rewarded, and that those evil infidels who say rock-god doesn't exist will burn eternally in the really nasty hell rock-god has in store for those who do not kiss his derriere every moment of their lives..

      Jesus speaking:
John 14:14 – If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
Mathew 17:20 – He replied, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

Let's be honest. Don't be afraid. Jesus said the above, about prayer. Is it true? Can you post back to me and claim what Jesus said is true?
Why has there never been a doc_umented case of an amputated limb being restored? Do you think an amputee never prayed or had faith?

Why aren't Jesus's words true? Can you think of any possibilities?

A fundie once told me, that god always answers prayers in one of three ways:
      1) God says, "yes". You get what you asked for immediately.

      2) God says, "to wait". You will get what you asked for at some future date.

      3) God says, "no". You will not get what you asked for.

Hmmm.... But I can get the same success from the carton of milk I have sitting on the breakfast table.

      1) If I pray to my magic carton, some things will come true immediately, just by chance and coincidence.

      2) Some things will come true at some future date, for the same reasons.

      3) If I don't get what I want, then my magic carton said, "no".

I think there is a problem, when there is no difference between praying to a god and praying to a milk carton.

Prayer does not work. It should be resorted to in times of dire need, as a last ditch effort to control events.

I have a theory as to why god never makes an amputee whole:

Speak unto Aaron, saying, Whosoever [he be] of thy seed in their generations that hath [any] blemish, let him not approach to offer the bread of his God. – Leviticus 21:17

Handicapped people creep god out! What a wonderful god we have!

Actually, you will get the same results praying to Charlie Sheen as you will in praying to any other god, so maybe Charlie Sheen is god. And it's a lot more fun reading about him that reading the bible or the book or Mormon.

David Johnson, Jesus was speaking about the blemish of those that continue to think carnally. Carnal thinking is the blemish. Not the body parts. Spiritual thinking is what you need to learn in order to read His truth. But, because you don't believe Jesus is God, you will never pray (talk with Him) and ask Him for forgiveness of your sinful ways, past, present of sins you know about, sins you've forgotten and sins that you had no clue were sins. Then and only then, can you be forgiven and sin NO MORE.

Other than that peace out. You folks are out of it.

You can't just pray to God, you have to pray to Jesus to show God you believe in Him. That's the rules.

Besides, Jesus answers every one that prays to Him. You just don't know how He answers. It's not how you think you should get, it's how He knows what is right for you. For example. One day you are running late, you can't find your keys to the car, you can't find the other half to the outfit you wanted. The shoes you wanted to wear don't really match as you thought the day you thought about it. You are late, late, late and you are so angry that you are late. You're going to be told off by that nosy co-worker, announcing to everyone that you are late again. Things just didn't seem to go right for you that morning. Then, when you get home from work, you watch on the TV, that a semi-tractor hit a line of vehicles and creamed them all. Without realizing, if you were on time, you would have been in that crash that made the nightly news.

Yes, Peggy. It was God making sure you were OK by making you late that morning. Don't believe me. Read all the saved would be victims in 9/11 stories about why they didn't make it to work in the Twin Towers that fateful morning.

God answers all our prayers ... we just don't know it because we can't think on His level.

      Peace.

David Johnson, Jesus is God. God sent Himself down in human form as Jesus who inspired men to write what He taught during the 3 1/2 years walking on earth. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are all one, if 3 different versions to explain IAM to humans.

The sin in the Garden of Eden is allowing Satan (evil sin) to influence (lie to deceive) Adam and Eve so that satan's evil (his seed that created Cain) got to come to earth again and do battle with God. Satan is Cain's father and all this is written in scriptures.

You said: "What is right? The statutes of the Lord are right (Psalm 19:8)".

Psalm 19:8 (New International Version, ©2011)

8 The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.

precepts – A commandment, instruction, or order intended as an authoritative rule of action.

commands – an authoritative direction or instruction to do something

      Hmmm... God is good.?

It is said: "By your fruit you will be known."

Let's look at the god of the Book's "fruit".

God directly or at His insistence, murdered men, women and children including babies. Is this good? Did this give joy to the heart or light to the eyes?

God killed every living thing on the face of the earth other than Noah and his family, because man was wicked. Afterwards, He decides He won't kill everything again, because man's heart is evil from his youth. Is this good? Did this give joy to the heart or light to the eyes?

God had a man believe he was going to sacrifice his son to Him. Do you know how traumatic that would be for a father and his son?
If you had the power would you do this? Would you be so insecure? Is this good? Did this give joy to the heart or light to the eyes?

There was a man who loved God. God made a bet with Satan that even if the man were tortured, his Possessions taken, and his children killed, he would still love God and never curse Him. God won the bet.
Would you do that? Would you kill a man's children for a bet? Is this good? Did this give joy to the heart or light to the eyes?

God sent a bear to kill a group of children, because they had teased one of His prophets.
Did the children deserve to die, because they teased a bald man? Is this good? Did this give joy to the heart or light to the eyes?

God allowed a man to sacrifice his daughter to Him, for giving the man a victory in battle. Human sacrifice! Is this good? Did this give joy to the heart or light to the eyes?

God created a place He can send people to be burned for all eternity. Could an all good god do this?
If a puppy wet on the floor, would you hold it over a burner? Even for a second?

      Jesus had this to say:
Matthew 7:17 Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.
Luke 6:43 "No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.

This god's precepts and actions are not right, or radiant, giving neither joy to the heart, or light to the eyes.

A good god can't do evil things!

So, god could be evil or he could not exist.

      Cheers!

8 The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart.

      Hmmm... God is good.?

Let's look at the god of the Book's "fruit".

God directly or at His insistence, murdered men, women and children including babies. Is this good? Did this give joy to the heart or light to the eyes?”

Answer: If a psychology book tells you common sense that if you walk over to that bear, it will kill you, would you belive the concept of what the book taught and stay away from the bear or would you ignore the teachings of the psychology book and approach the bear to get killed?

“God killed every living thing on the face of the earth other than Noah and his family, because man was wicked. Afterwards, He decides He won't kill everything again, because man's heart is evil from his youth. Is this good? Did this give joy to the heart or light to the eyes?”

Answer: As in the beginning of this 2nd earth age, people were living in sin because they refused to their spiritual truth and continued believing and doing carnal lusting of the flesh and other sins. You reject His teachings because you love to continue with your sinful nature. Others learned to overcome their sinful nature by comprehending His spiritual truth so we understand what he is teaching.

“God had a man believe he was going to sacrifice his son to Him. Do you know how traumatic that would be for a father and his son?”

Answer: God sacrificed His son Jesus Christ for all our sins. You don’t believe in Jesus, nor God, therefore, you don’t believe this statement to be true. Because you didn’t read all the scriptures in this teaching, you have no clue to the results of His lesson.

“If you had the power would you do this? Would you be so insecure? Is this good? Did this give joy to the heart or light to the eyes?

Answer: Same answer that I gave you above, you didn’t read the entire scripture for that chapter, therefore, you don’t understand what Jesus was teaching or the lesson to be lerned. But, you’ll constantly write these passages so others tell you the answer. I suggest, you study the Bible to learn Jesus’ lessons on your own.

“There was a man who loved God. God made a bet with Satan that even if the man were tortured, his Possessions taken, and his children killed, he would still love God and never curse Him. God won the bet.
Would you do that? Would you kill a man's children for a bet? Is this good? Did this give joy to the heart or light to the eyes?”

Answer: God did not bet with satan. You’ve got it backwards. Satan bet God that if he destroyed Job’s life, Job would give up and stop believing in God.

“God sent a bear to kill a group of children, because they had teased one of His prophets.

This god's precepts and actions are not right, or radiant, giving neither joy to the heart, or light to the eyes.”

Answer: If you were taught how to be a good and decent person, then your beliefs/thoughts, words, actions will follow if you accept said teachings. If you refuse to accept said teachings then your beliefs/thoughts, words and actions will be the opposite, that being bad (aka evil) and you become an unrighteous person because that’s what the person chose. Free will, remember.

“A good god can't do evil things!

So, god could be evil or he could not exist.”

Answer: God is good. It is people who don’t know His teachings that believe His teachings to be evil. These people will only see evil instead of what He does teach in all his lessons, do this and the outcome will be this or that. Good or evil outcomes. Your choice aka free will.

      Amen.

No one can prove a negative. No one can prove absolutely that something does not exist. I cannot "prove" Santa does not exist. No one can.

But in life, we decide by a preponderance of the evidence, whether something exists or not. We determine, that there is no real evidence for a thing.

      1 Corinthians 13:11
When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
When I was 5, I believed in magic and things unseen. When I was 7, I gave up childish notions.

Childish beliefs should be abandoned by every adult, if they haven't done it earlier. Adults should be honest with themselves and look at the world, as it actually is.

We reject, because we know that there are children who don't receive any toys for Christmas. Kids of rich parents receive more and better toys than the poor kids. Carrying all those toys and sliding down chimneys is not believable. Saying Santa is magic doesn't satisfy us.

Santa doesn't fit in with how things really are. The jolly old elf, just isn't probable.

God is like Santa. He is a fictional being. He doesn't fit in, with how things really are.

Because believers want god to be real, they use selective observation, make excuses and hold onto expectations that are very, very unlikely:

      Jesus has been dead for 2000+ years. He hasn't returned, in spite of predicting a 1st Century 2nd Coming;

All the born again believers will one day float up to heaven; When we die, our souls survive to be rewarded or punished. Like Santa, you will receive more or less gifts, depending on what the elf observes. So you better watch out. You better not pout... an invisible somebody is watching you all the time. LOL

Bad things happen to good people. Bad people often live long lives in the sun.

God is said to be all good, but there is so much suffering in the world.

God did horrible things in the Old Testament. Reality, calls His "all good" attribute into question.

Prayer does not work. Jesus made promises about prayer, that you can test. So test them! Ask for anything – A new car, world peace, that Jesus would appear to you... or, move a mountain.
Jesus promised you could ask for anything and He would give it to you. With only a little faith, He said you could move a mountain.
But, you know that is not true, in spite of what Jesus said.

When people pray, they are talking to themselves. When god starts talking to them, we start to worry. We believe it is a sign of mental illness.

There are no miracles. Miracles are just the product of coincidence and random chance. Or, deception and fraud.

Science can find no use for god. All the gaps in man's knowledge, that are filled by god, are being filled by scientific discoveries.

Evolution has dispelled the myth of creation. There is tons of evidence for Evolution. None for Creation.

If Adam and Eve did not exist, then there could not have been original sin.

If no original sin, then all the suffering humans and animals endure, could not be because of it.

If no original sin, then there is no need for a redeemer.

If no redeemer, then why is there Christianity?

So, there is no more evidence that there is a god, than there is for there being a Santa.

Your belief in god is based on faith. Faith in something does not make it true.

Faith and belief can never be a subst_itute for evidence. Believing that it can, is a delusion. Faith without evidence is worthless.

You don't believe in the ancient Greek gods do you? Of course you don't.

But if you did, Zeus would spring to life. Your faith and belief is what powers the gods.

Have faith and Aphrodite will answer your prayers – if she thinks it would be good for you and if it is her will – just like the Christian god. No difference!

Once, the Greek gods were prayed to, loved and feared. Believers strived to know and to obey their wants. But now they lie silent, because no one believes...

If all the gods, that have come before the current batch of gods, are classified as myths, what evidence do you have that the gods now in vogue should not also be in that column?

No, little Justina, there is no god.

I claim there is no god, with the same confidence that I claim there is no Santa or Zeus, or Poseidon.

If extraordinary evidence surfaces, that the goddess Athena exists, I will embrace her, 'cause she looks hot!

Every adult should take this stand. God is just the Santa for adults. If belief were withdrawn, God would crumple to the ground, like a puppet whose strings were cut.

      Ask yourself these two things:

If a one true god exists, why are there so many religions, with so many different gods? Wouldn't the one true god want everyone to know He exists? Wouldn't He be very obvious? But, He isn't obvious.

If there was a god, Would He not have written/inspired a bible that is not confusing? A bible that everyone would interpret the same way? That, everyone who read it, would know His wants without question? Yet, the bible we have is ambiguous.

An omnipotent and omniscient and omnibenevolent god, can do anything, except exist. For, it is impossible for any god to be all 3 at the same time.

      Cheers!

      David,
Some well written stuff but when you speak to someone who has their hands over their ears going "lalalalalalala , love jesus, lalalalala, you are all controlled by satan, lalalalala" It is kind of pointless. Many of these people could not, are too scared to, or are past the point of no return brainwashed to even begin to think objectively. But please keep it up if you have the strength. If you can raise the consciousness of just one person I guess its worth it.

You are right. If my comments were actually directed to HeavenSent or Justina or any one of the other believers, I would be wasting my efforts. Even with god's help, I could not change their minds.

Instead, it is my belief that there are some who read these blogs, who haven't yet drank the Kool Aid. I like to give those individuals an alternative to the prattle offered by HeavenSent and company.

      Cheers!

David Johnson, the story of Satan IS A TAKE OFF OF JESUS.

Same as the Wizard of Oz. All the characters are take offs of the Bible. Dorothy believes on wanting to go home, just as Christians want to go back home to Jesus. Oh, there is no place like home (Heaven), click twice, there's no place like Heaven (home).

Tinman ... looking for his heart is looking for the heart of Jesus ... aka His truth.

Lion ... if I only had courage. Courage for what? Courage to read the Bible and live a righteous life.

Scarcrow ... looking for his brain ... aka looking for God's wisdom.

Wicked Witch ..l. well, that's satan and all the evil she does is what satan does in the world.

I'm melting ... you wicked girl you killed my wickedness (with a bucket of water) which God promised us he would not destroy us with water again ... so the which melts instead, aka burning in the eternal flames.

The wizard is the non-believers not believing in Jesus' truth ... aka don't pay attention to that man behind the curtain, he's just a mortal man ... but Dorothy made her way back home with that funny little man behind the curtain.

      Something to think about.

Yes, God does work in mysterious ways.

So, you better be good, stop sinning and you will get your present with Jesus through eternity. If you pout (continue to sin), you go the way of satan.

Not all proof is confined to ways of thinking regarding what is already known.
Sometimes the proof has to be developed outside of normal ways of thinking.
Take for example Darwin. Saw things in a way outside of the supernatural and went to the natural to explain things. He didn't have knowledge of genetic drift n such but he stepped outside of the norm and expanded his horizons. That is very human and very courageous.

      March 5, 2011 at 5:40 pm |
    • DavidMichael

But the problem Heavensent, is that your Satan is shown to be a minion of the gods in the story of Job, asking the gods for permission to torment him. You also do known, hopefully, that you misinterpret hell from Sheol which is the "place of the dead" in Judaism and not any sort of Hell, right?

      March 5, 2011 at 5:59 pm |
    • David Johnson

      @HeavenSent

You said: "the story of Santa IS A TAKE OFF OF JESUS.

No. The Santa figure developed in the 19th century from the Dutch figure of Sinterklaas, which, in turn, has part of its basis in hagiographical tales concerning the historical figure of gift giver Saint Nicholas (a Catholic Saint).
Sinterklaas is the basis of the holiday figure of Santa Claus in North America Source : Wikipedia

The stories in the Gospels, are similar to "gods" that preceded Jesus. Google: Krishna, Mithra, Attis and Horus. You will find similarities that will astound you.

Read some Greek and Roman mythology. Gods having $ex/offspring with humans, was not unique to the Christian god.

      Hmmm... Let's see:

Dorthy and the Scarecrow and the Tinman and the Lion all are like Christians believing and having faith, that their individual prayers (needs) will be met.

I think god should play the wizard, since the wizard is who our quartet is looking to, to answer their prayers / needs.

Yes, god as the Great and Terrible Oz! Fitting, I think.

Just like god, The Great and Terrible Oz is a charlatan. Pay no attention to the man who is outside time and space...OOPs!...I mean, behind the curtain.

And The good witch, in the end, tells the quartet that they did not need a god! That they could achieve their wants and needs by their own efforts. I think I may be crying...

      Cheers!

You said: "people are either born straight or born g-ay. I have proved my point on that many times on these blogs and I will gladly prove it again to any reply's"

I agree with you. Being gay is not a choice.

It is still not clear to what extent ho_mo$exuality in humans or other animals is genetic rather than, say, due to hormonal extremes during embryonic development.
      http://www.newscientist.com/.../dn13674-evolution-myths-natural-selection-cannot -explain-ho_mo$exuality.html

But what studies are NOT finding, is that being gay is a choice.

A study done by scientists at the Karolinska Inst_itute in Sweden found that the brain development of gay men more closely resembled the brain structure of straight women, and the brain structure of gay women more closely resembled the brain structure of straight men. Source: http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1815538,00.html

When gays are asked, they say that being gay is not a choice.
Believers choose not to believe them, since it would be hard to blame a person who suffers from a birth defect.

When a product contains a defect, we generally blame the manufacturer.

T-party and Peggy, I told you what I know by reading His truth. You come back with lies that other non-believers tell you. Not my problem that you don't know what is written. You own not knowing His truth. He wants every one to read His truth. You can't or don't do this because simply, chatting with non-believers, you are lazy, believe the lies that intelligent people don't read the Bible, looking down your noses at those that do. Fact is, the Bible is the Greatest Book ever written, whether you believe or do not believe God inspired men to write it. Go ahead and mock the Bible. Brighter minds that ever lived or live today, will agree with what I just told you. But, you wouldn't know this truth until you shelf your ego, stop making war with Jesus' truth, meaning humble yourself and stop listening to what you learned in this world and read, study, comprehend what He's written.

When you've done this, then we can have a real debate about Jesus truth. If my abruptness hurts. Good. I hope I opened your eyes.

      @HeavenSent

If believers say god created the universe, then it can be asked, who created / caused god and then who created / caused god's maker etc. ad infinitum.

Believers usually reply: "God is outside time and space and is the only thing that does not require a maker or a cause."

If you have a rule, that everything that is must have a cause, and then exempt god, you no longer have a rule. If god can be excused from the need for a cause, then why not the universe or some other not god thingy?

Believers are still doing the "God of the Gaps" answer to everything. Whatever is not known, is explained by saying, "God did it". But, this answer has always been wrong in the past. So far, god has not been "necessary" for any explanation.

Believers have no proof, that their self existent god, is anything but wishful thinking. I would think it necessary to first prove there is a god, before He is used as an explanation for anything.

      Cheers!

David, since you are being really stu–d understanding anything a Christian tells you ... to simplify it for a non-believer, which really can't be simplified, but I'll try to reach your mind. God created Himself because He is God. He's always was, is, will be. God is the Word. Which means in your definition ... infinite. Alpha and Omega.

Christians know anything man can come up with to explain God doesn't touch His reality of I AM. Therefore, if I AM doesn't tell you everything about Him, nothing we say will help you. The human mind can't fathom Him and that too, is written in scriptures.

      Amen.

      @Heavensent

Ok i'm a christian (an open minded one) and nothing you've said makes any sense whatsoever. When the bible or god is what is being debated you can't use the bible or god as evidence. Also, if science can explain something through the study of god's natural laws, then the explanation is true. I believe in the big bang, evolution, that nobody lived in a whale for 3 days, etc. but that doesn't mean that i miss the point of the lesson from the bible. The infallibility of the bible is an idea that's only been around since the early 20th century.

Also, your amount of judgmental behavior and disrespect is not very Christ-like. Don't speak for all christians if you're going to spew nothing but anger and hate. I'd appreciate it

      Thank you Josh,
Just out my own curiosity, since you do appear to be someone of an open mind: Do you follow christianity as a true theist, really believe that Jesus was the son of god and miracles are true, or a deist that god does exist and all the texts are noble but really mythology? I know many "christians" who fall under deist but go to church simply for culture and social aspects.

Josh, you wrote “Ok i'm a christian (an open minded one) and nothing you've said makes any sense whatsoever. When the bible or god is what is being debated you can't use the bible or god as evidence.”

Answer: Then you are NOT a Christian. The Bible is the Word of God as he inspired men to write His truth. That’s a FACT. His truth, as written.

“Also, if science can explain something through the study of god's natural laws, then the explanation is true.”

Answer: True Science and God’s truth written in the Bible match perfectly. The more the sciences and others discover what is written in the Bible, the more of His truth is unveiled in the written scriptures. Awesome. Yes, it is.

“I believe in the big bang, evolution, “

Answer: That’s too bad. Evolution, like other theories are other non-believers trying to get folks away from reading, comprehending and abiding in Jesus’ truth.

“... that nobody lived in a whale for 3 days, etc. but that doesn't mean that i miss the point of the lesson from the bible. “

Answer: Well, at least your eyes can see and your ears hear that lesson He taught.

“The infallibility of the bible is an idea that's only been around since the early 20th century.”

Answer: Some day, not soon though, you non-believers get on my nerves. No offense, but, I’m tired of banging my head against brick walls to save souls. I did my part and Jesus tells us. I will post you who wrote the Bible, when etc. ...... that’s if what I write gets posted..

“Also, your amount of judgmental behavior and disrespect is not very Christ-like. Don't speak for all christians if you're going to spew nothing but anger and hate. I'd appreciate it.”

Answer: No problem. I just gave back what they gave me and other believers. Even Jesus will destroy those that don’t love and follow Him.

Where in the bible does it explain why we have an appendix, ie the vestigial organ left from our ape ancestors (herbivore primates use it to digest leaves, like a cow)

Good question. But first is it a question that needs to be asked?
If you believe it does need to be asked, do you have any proof that God does have a beginning?
If you say that there is proof then you must have evidence of God's existence.
If you say that there is no evidence then there is no need for the question because no Christian/Jew/or Muslim would claim a beginning to God.

      @HeavenSent

You said: "David, since you are being really stu–d understanding anything a Christian tells you ... to simplify it for a non-believer, which really can't be simplified, but I'll try to reach your mind."

Thanks for simplifying it. I am humbled.

You said, "God created Himself because He is God. He's always was, is, will be. God is the Word. Which means in your definition ... infinite. Alpha and Omega."

Actually, maybe you simplified it too much. You made your statement untrue. If god, at some point created Himself, then there was a time when god did not exist. So, He couldn't be "always was" .

If there was a time, when god did not exist, who or what created time, for god to not exist in?

Yep, your Christian mind sure is better than a nasty old atheist one. I'm in awe of you.

I have fairies living in my left shoe. They have always existed. They are the the creator of all things. They are the beginning and the end. They always were, are and will be. My Big Book of Fairy Tales has tons of quotes by them, and it tells how wondrous they are. But you won't be able to see them, unless they let you. Your Christian mind just can't fathom their I Yamnes. They are magic!

What is the one thing that our two descriptions have in common? Ans.- They both lack evidence.

Always keep in mind, that belief and faith are not equal to evidence – Not even close.

I can have faith and believe anything. I can have faith and believe I can fly! I can keep my faith and belief, right up to the time I hit the pavement, from the top of a 6 story building.

Radical Muslims have faith and believe they are going directly to heaven for cool rewards, just as soon as they blow themselves to bits in a public place.

You do not believe in the Allah, or the Elephant-Headed god or Krishna, or any other deity but the Christian god, right? 'Cause you know the Christian god is only one that is real. And you know this 'cause, you read it in a book and you have a feeling in your heart! AMEN!

You use the bible as proof of your god's existence. You constantly quote from it. But, it is circular reasoning.

      You: God exists!

      Me: How do you know?

You: Because the bible says so – See all these passages? – He is I am! See: "I Yam what I Yam and that's all that I Yam! toot! toot!

Me: Why should I believe your bible? (My Spiderman comic, says Spidey can walk up walls! But it is fiction)

You: Because, the bible was written by God!

You need to first prove your god is real. Then we can talk about what He said. Otherwise, lady, you are just talking through your hat.

Truth is, if you were born in India and were raised by Hindu parents, you more than likely would be a believer in the Hindu gods. If you grew up in Iran, raised by parents who followed Islam, you would more than likely worship Allah.

Babies are born atheist. There is no "god seed" that draws children to one god over another. Parents begin programming the silly into them, almost from birth.

What your parents believe and where you were raised, are the two greatest factors in what religion you will follow. And which religions you will reject.

You said: "Christians know anything man can come up with to explain God doesn't touch His reality of I AM. Therefore, if I AM doesn't tell you everything about Him, nothing we say will help you. The human mind can't fathom Him and that too, is written in scriptures."

You are talking "magic"! You are protecting your beliefs by saying god is beyond the human mind.

At one time, men believed there was a rotating dome above the earth, that contained the Sun, Moon and stars. God was thought to live on top of this dome and walk on it. Now, god is said to live outside time and space. This makes it more difficult for science to go and look. LOL

You have no credible evidence that your god exists. It is just your opinion, that He does. Opinions are like anuses. Everybody has one.

You have no right to believe or let on to others, that what you are saying is anything but your opinion.

      Cheers!

      Cheers!

      Amen.

Peggy, I know you don't read the Bible. Do you read psychology books? Do you comprehend what psychology courses or books teaches about the human mind, how a person thinks, how a person acts? How many personalities psychology discusses?
