A look at the ways the world could end

By Jessica Ravitz, CNN

Think you’ve got a prediction for when and how the world will end? Get in line.

A caravan of RVs is now touring the country to warn people about the end of the world (they say it will happen May 21), but they're hardly the first ones to embark on such a mission.

Throughout time, and across continents and belief systems, humankind has dished out enough end dates to fill a doomsday menu.

The backgrounds of the people who serve them up may differ, as might the details of what will unfold, but the general apocalyptic worldview is nothing original, says Lorenzo DiTommaso, an associate professor of religion at Concordia University in Montréal, Quebec and author of the forthcoming book, “The Architecture of Apocalypticism.”

“It’s a philosophy that explains time, space and human existence,” DiTommaso says. And by buying into this sort of outlook, a person can find comfort in a “comprehensive answer.”

Having studied apocalyptic movements for nearly 12 years, DiTommaso has strong opinions. He calls the apocalyptic worldview “adolescent” because it’s “a simplistic response to complex problems” and one that “places responsibility for solving these problems with someone else or somewhere else.”

As a result, there are dangers to this thinking, he says. Why care about protecting the environment, curing cancer or stopping poverty and violence against women, for example, if you believe it’s all going to end soon anyway?

The imminent doomsday date that’s gotten the most attention in recent years is the December 21, 2012, prediction gleaned from the Mayan “Long Count” calendar.

But not to be outdone by those pesky Mayans, there are some Christians who claim the Bible teaches that Judgment Day will come on May 21 of this year. They say those who are not saved in the Rapture will endure great suffering up until October 21, 2011, when the world will be kaput.

“There’s competition,” DiTommaso says. The Mayan calendar prediction “has gone global, and in the ecology of apocalypticism that’s the big tree right now. So the 2011 prediction has to fight for a bit of the sun. And the supreme irony is no matter how big the tree, it always gets cut down.”

Both predicted ends “will come and go – quote me on that,” DiTommaso says. “Unless the apocalypse we’re bringing on ourselves happens first, it’s not going to happen.”

Author and professor Lorenzo DiTommaso has studied apocalyptic movements for more than a decade.

Those who’ve dedicated the next few months to warning people about the May 21 date, however, hold that they understand what others – including, for instance, DiTommaso – fail to see. They accept the Bible as the undisputed word of God, and they find within the carefully studied scripture “infallible proofs” that the end is not only near but firmly scheduled, says Harold Camping, the force behind the Christian broadcasting ministry Family Radio and the biggest proponent of this doomsday date.

“What happens if nothing happens on May 21? I’m asked that question again and again,” Camping says. “It’s a question I don’t even entertain because it is going to happen. It is going to happen.”

So how do staunch believers, including those who quit jobs, bail on families and give away possessions in preparation for the end, bounce back if these fateful dates they think will bring massive destruction amount to just another ho-hum day?

Surprisingly, they don’t all feel duped, DiTommaso says. Some may fall away or slink off to something new, but when your worldview is apocalyptic in nature, a failed doomsday doesn’t leave you easily shaken, he says.

Instead, what religious people generally do, he says, is write off the end-that-wasn’t as an interpretation hiccup. With deeper study and prayer, they’ll be lucky enough to find another doomsday around the corner.

Well done, I couldn't have done it better....
      As we may notice is that most of signs already passed by and man has not tried to avoid the occurrence of such signs but has urgent it to occur challenging what ever God has clearly forbidden through his messengers and their written holy scriptures....! Kindly check links for clarifications to as how should be delayed or avoided...;

      Al-Istighfaar (Seeking Forgiveness)
'O my 'ilãh You are my Lord, there is no 'ilãh but You. You created me, and I am your bondservant, and I will stick to my covenant and promise [of faith and sincere obedience] to You, as to my ability. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done, I acknowledge, to You, your bounties upon me, and I acknowledge, to You, my sin. Thus forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.

If we don't get a handle on the Middle Eastern crisis we can look forward to a very serious international, possibly nuclear conflict. And as we all know you cannot win one of those.

We do not need theories about asteroids, floods, global warming and horsemen of the apocalypse. If we don't have peace in the Middle East and Pakistan we are in a very, very dangerous situation.

  5. Wait.....seriously.....

So if the bible is true....we're all suffering because of TWO people who ate a apple..........
we're all suffering because he refuses to answer prayers of people who have no direct connection to adam & eve????
This from the same book that can't even get it's facts straight?
    Genesis 6:19
You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you.......
    Genesis 7:2
Take with you seven of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and two of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate.....

wait so the all forgiving being only wants CLEAN animals??? what's the difference?!?!
Don't get me started on this.....it's a battle that will make you regret your choice in religion.......

I think the world is more concearned with disasters that are actually happening and not the wet dreams of zealots. Believe in God, that's fine, it's your right. Don't, that's great too, part of being an American and having the ability to publically voice it. I personally love these doomsday prophecies, rmeinds me of the good old days when crazy homeless people stood on street corners brandishing signs stating "The end is Nigh!".

  8. wow, really?

well for one thing, how can the world end if it already ended in 1994 of september, oh wait, cuz they were wrong, to tell you the truth, im sick and tired of soothsayers and there peridctions that never come true. prophcey is a fickle master, that doesnt care how you fill in the blanks, its like a mad libs book. im 24 and ive lived thru countless end of the world predictions, and im tired of it, its just a way to get people into church. if these people were true christians they would fallow what the bible preaches and stop lying. people will believe anything, an do anything if a person scares them enough, and taking avanage of that is more unchristian then anything ive heard. i hope not to many people get caught up in there scam

I Say the Lord's Prayer daily, but do not go to church. I have a deep faith in what the Heavens and Universe hold. Having almost become a preacher on two instances my early years, I believe that if the INDIVIDUAL believes and prays, then not going to church is not the most harmful situation. I have gone to church for holidays and a few other occasions, and have had clergy as friends.
Most people of ALL religions seems to fall in the middle area, not fanatic, but not totally against a GOD.

My whole question is: If so many different viewpoints can occur about a higher being, why can't they ALL be a LITTLE RIGHT and a little off? And from what I have read, the bible etc, I do nt see how God can inform someone when GOD will return.

JW's don't even believe in a hell fire where people are sent for eternal torture. That is a Catholic teaching. JW's only believe in the Scriptures and the Bible says that God would never even entertain such a thought as eternal torment in hell. Not everything in the Bible is literal. Tell us again just how intelligent you are.

Mary, Jesus' truth is the letter He wrote to all of us (the Bible). He inspired men to write the Bible so we wouldn't go solo while down on earth in human flesh. The Bible is His blueprint how to be the best that He wants us to be, what He wants from us and for us. In order to save your soul, you need to read what He wrote, comprehend it, the apply it to your life.

      Your soul depends on it.

Luke 3.21-22 records that Father, Son (Jesus), and Holy Spirit were all three present at the same event, at one and the same time. The event was the Baptism of Jesus....

Jesus was in the Jordan River, being baptized.
The Holy Spirit was descending upon Jesus.
The Father was speaking from Heaven.

John 14.16-17 records Jesus's promise to pray to the Father.

It would be irrational for Jesus to pray to Himself by a different name.
Therefore, the Father and Jesus (the Son) are two distinct persons.

John 14.16-17 further records Jesus's promise that He would ask the Father to give us the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the Holy Spirit is distinct from both the Father and Jesus.

God knows and he told us to pay attention to the Book of Revelation. Revelation means to reveal. End of days started in 1948. All prophesies in the Bible came quicker and quicker since that date, it's called birth pains. Happening faster and faster every day. One prophesy that is definitely true pertaining to all the non-believers in the end time is famine.

The religion of the end time in bible prophecy

The religion of the end time will be one where the false prophet will deceive the whole world and cause the world to worship the Antichrist by doing miracles such as pulling fire from the sky. This religion already exists but will be made universal by the power given the Antichrist and the false prophet by the devil. The bible doesn't specifically tells us what that religion will be called, but we can determine what it will be by looking at the facts. The world is pretty much dominated by Christianity and Islam (over half of the worlds population combined). While Hinduism comes in a close third, it doesn't look like it will matter in the end time.

Christianity today is full of churches proclaiming that all religions worship the same God and therefore we should embrace them. The Catholic church promotes that idea with Interfaith doctrine and goes as far as to state in the Catechism that the Muslims worship the same God as Christianity and therefore will enjoy the same salvation equally. This means that they think it doesn't matter if you're a Christian or a Muslim and that you can find salvation through either religion.

The Muslims, on the other hand, have no such belief. In fact, Muslim doctrine teaches that Jesus is just a prophet, not the manifestation of God in the flesh, and that He will return at the end time to teach Christians the Muslim way and convert them. The prophecies of the bible and the Muslim prophecies concerning the Antichrist (the Muslim Mahdi) and the false prophet (the Muslim Jesus) mirror each other but the good guys of Islam are the bad guys of the bible. This is a very good indication that the Antichrist will rise as the Mahdi of Islam and will unite the Christian world with him via the false prophet and create a global Islamic religion. The bible tells us that this end time religion will be forced upon people or they will be killed if they refuse. The Muslim prophecies tell us that the Muslims will kill any who won't convert to Islam.

The bible tells us that the world will be fooled by the false prophet performing miracles in the sight of men, like pulling fire from the sky. The false prophet will seem to everyone to have Godly power and will fool everyone into worshiping the Antichrist.

      3. a name given to Jacob after he had wrestled with the angel. Gen. 32:28.
      4. the northern kingdom of the Hebrews, including 10 of the 12 tribes, sometimes called by the name of the chief tribe, Ephraim. Capital: Samaria.

"Indeed, they belch with their mouth; swords are in their lips; For they say, 'Who hears?' But you, O Lord, shall laugh at them; You shall have all the nations in derision." Psalm 59:7-8 (Ps 37:13, 2:4)

"Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap." Galatians 6:7

the World will end, when Jesus step out of the Most Holy Place of the Heavenly Sanctuary, as our High Priest, put on a Kingly garment... But He is waiting for people who have have the character of Jesus reproduce in their lives. Jesus has been waiting for His people to give the final message of the 3 angels of Revelation 14... then the end will come...

You forgot to remind the people that Jesus is also going to come riding on a white horse with his clothes dipped in blood and He is going to come with a shard sword that comes from His mouth. And that he is going to kill a lot of people. A whole lot. So many people are going to die that the birds will be called forth for a feast of the flesh of "kings, captains and their horses." Revelation 19:11-18.
Though, why everyone would be riding horses in this day and age I can't understand.

Will, only those that have big egos that refuse to repent for their sins are nervous. Oh, I forgot, in this day and age, you kids don't even know what sins are, never mind believe in Jesus who died for said sins.

Oh, for those that mock God ...

The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none who does good. (see also Psalm 53:1).

Every single last person that rejects the truth of the Bible (Romans 1:18-25), and thus, the Truth of the Bible, God (John 14:6), will burn them forever in the lake of fire for hating Him so (Deuteronomy 32:39-41; Revelation 20:11-15). "not receive the love of the truth" (as in 2 Thessalonians 2:10). (2 Timothy 2:16-17).

They will find themselves weeping and gnashing their teeth (e.g. Matthew 8:12; 22:1-14; 25;14-30; Luke 13:28).

Why? Because, you are on the broad way (Matthew 7:13; 2 Peter 2:2; 2 Timothy 4:3). You have not the characteristic of Christ's sheep (John 10:5).

How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? For scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge. (Proverbs 1:22).

God rejects all those who stray from His word. It does not matter what the subject matter is. There is no salvation for any who heed not holy writ, as Psalm 119:21 proclaims,

You rebuke the proud, the cursed, who stray from Your commandments.

Proverbs 17:4 declares, An evildoer gives heed to false lips.

The Lord looks down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek God. They have all turned aside, they have together become corrupt; there is none who does good, no, not one. (Psalm 14:2-3; 53:2-3).

What man can live and not see death? (Psalm 89:48).

      This is because,

all who behave unrighteously are an abomination to the Lord (Deuteronomy 25:16).

MEN DO NOT SEEK GOD ". . . There is none righteous, no, not one; there is none who understands; there is none who seeks after God." Romans 3:10-18 (John 6:44).

"For the wicked [man without God] boasts of his heart's desire; he blesses the greedy and renounces the Lord. The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts." Psalm 10:3-4.

      1 Peter 3:15
But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect.

      Ephesians 4:2
With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love.

      John 8:7
And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.
