Dalai Lama ready to give up political power

The Dalai Lama announced Thursday his plan to retire as political head of the Tibetan exile movement, according to his website.

"Tibetans need a leader, elected freely by the Tibetan people, to whom I can devolve power," the exiled spiritual leader said in a statement. "Now, we have clearly reached the time to put this into effect."

The Dalai Lama remains the head of state for now, according to Tempa Tshering, his representative in India, and will remain the group's spiritual leader.

Mr. Dalai Lama should speak to Buddhists to stop persecuting and oppressing non-Buddhists in the Buddhist-majority nations and regions including Tibet.

Eastern spirituality is stupid and totally inferior because it values fantasies and doesn't quest for Truth, the whole Truth, nothing but the Truth. The reason Asians learned everything useful from the Christian West.

If the bible is truth then that means it can be proven. Name any physical evidence that even 1 of the stories are true.

Common-sense, give one point that proves the Bible is not true. The Bible is the inspired Word of God for most numerous people on earth now, for the longest time in human history, and unto the remotest places on earth. Changed lives for good because of the Bible outnumbers by far any other influence on earth throughout the history and all the world. Substantially good influences all have their roots in the Bible anyway. The superiority of the content of the Bible texts is unchanllengable past and present. Internally and externally, the Bible is proven to be true and uniquely far worthy.

Frederica.. who proved the bible true.. about what...please supply proof of what you speak. just because people believe does not make it true.. people believed the earth was flat, that the sun went around the earth. they were wrong..People were killed because they dared to try to question these beliefs.. today we use threats of he-ll to keep people in line. look around you and see the true beauty of nature...he beauty of evolution and our place in the universe..you are doing your self a dis-service to only listen to one view point.

EvolvedDNA, no one was killed by claiming that Earth is round or it revolves around the sun. The persecution a few early scientists got is nothing comparing to the persecution millions of Christians got by trying to read the Bible. You are confused again. Millions and millions died at the hands of villains to get and read the Bible. Scientific thinking developed only in Christendom. The Book of Job claims the roundness of Earth. And words to describe visible phenomena, especially in poetry, has nothing wrong, as the word "sunset" and "sunrise" are still used. Evo-, you can't talk about the Bible if you never have read it. At least be an honest person.

despite being agnostic I get a lot out of eastern religions. I love meditating and the relaxation techniques I have learned. I feel very spiritual and clear minded. The west and muslims could really benefit from aspects of budism I believe.

Certainly some Westerners could really benefit from learning how to spell "Buddhism." And how to capitalize.

T-party, Christianity has every good thing Eastern religions have and so much more beyond degree. And it has clear salvation because of the Savior Jesus. You never studied and experienced anything in the depth. With Eastern religions or spirituality, mankind would be forever locked in stupid slavery to villains and never fight back for justice. The reason Asians were no match against the Christian West. As a woman, I'm very happy it happened before I would be enslaved by stupid men.

Uneducated people cannot elect anyone wisely or don't know what's the best in human life. Give Tibetans Christian education that teaches God-given human integrity and freedom and equality.

So they are uneducated unless they believe in Jesus?

      March 10, 2011 at 11:28 pm |

@False-reality: Believing in Jesus is a personal choice. Everyone on earth needs Christian education because Judeo-Christian value alone teaches freedom and human rights. Secularism is a big failure; it makes people corrupt and purpose-less and brings worthless mind. All other philosophies, ideologies and religions are oppressive, especially Buddhism and atheism. Secular Westerners are ignorant and hedonistic; that's why they falsely dream about Buddhism.

Uneducated people still think religion is fact, especially Christians.

  7. Reality

It is true that many exponents of Buddhism, most notably the Dalai Lama, have been remarkably willing to enrich (and even constrain) their view of the world through dialogue with modern science. But the fact that the Dalai Lama regularly meets with Western scientists to discuss the nature of the mind does not mean that Buddhism, or Tibetan Buddhism, or even the Dalai Lama’s own lineage, is uncontaminated by religious dogmatism.

"Indeed, there are ideas within Buddhism that are so incredible as to render the dogma of the vir-gin birth plausible by comparison. No one is served by a mode of discourse that treats such pre-literate notions as integral to our evolving dis-course about the nature of the human mind. Among Western Buddhists, there are college-educated men and women who apparently believe that Guru Rinpoche was actually born from a lotus. This is not the spiritual breakthrough that civilization has been waiting for these many centuries."

Maybe we should follow the world, according to reality. Not.

So R, is this your career? Bashing everyone that learned to think on the spiritual level, not wanting to stay at the carnal level?

Heaven sent.. There are no levels to life.. you find those levels in video games. You appear to like to apply" carnal" to most people who disagree with you, and I am not sure why. You are the same as any one else either a non believer or believer, you do not need any god to be good. you have no higher moral code. The issue is, as with CW, that an acceptance of that fact would make your faith weaker. If you really want" truth" you have to have something more powerful than faith, that is intellect.

Tell me Evolved DNA. What makes you put breaks on in life not to step on or over some one? Oh, because you're a nice guy? Then a few years later, when the stakes are higher, and you need to step over someone to get what you want, do you still have those breaks to give up what you worked so hard for because some innocent person was in the way and you couldn't reach that brass ring without stepping on them to go over them?

I've heard it before. You all say your nice guys/gals without knowing Jesus' truth.

No thank you. I'll stick with like mindedness and hope you come on over to His side.

    • False Reality

Morality and Religion are mutually exclusive. One does not come from the other and one may be moral with or without religion.

Catholicism hasn't prevented children from being molested or genocide from being imposed. There is a power social imperative for wanting to be a moral individual and it has nothing to do with God.

Heavensent..I am part of society, I work with in it or i would not survive. There is no evidence that your belief makes you a better person, or would not do some thing to advance your position, this has been demonstrated many times by the devout throughout history, and most recently by priests and nuns I totally respect people, and trust my fellow man..You apply an induced stereotype to enhance your belief system and to make your god worthwhile. the truth, as i have told you before, is available if you use your intellect..it is not in one place as you as-sert.
