CNN Poll: Most Americans 'OK' with a mosque in their community

Editor's Note: CNN's Soledad O'Brien chronicles the dramatic fight over the construction of a mosque in the heart of the Bible belt. Soledad O'Brien Reports "Unwelcome: The Muslims Next Door", airing at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. E.T. April 2 on CNN.

By Debra Goldschmidt, CNN

Would you be "OK" with a mosque in your community?

According to a new national poll, most Americans say yes, they would.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Thursday found that 69%of Americans would be "OK" with a mosque in their area while 28% would not.

But there are big differences depending on where you live. Half of rural Southerners say they disapprove of a mosque in their neighborhood, while 42 % say they would be "OK" with it.

That rises to roughly three-quarters among those who live in cities and suburbs.

According to the American Civil Liberties Union, anti-mosque activity across the country, ranging from vandalism to lawsuits, has occurred in 21 states over the past five years.

Positive views of Muslim Americans are on the rise since 2002, according to the new poll, which found 46% of all Americans have a favorable view of American Muslims today, and 26% say they have an unfavorable view.

"Overall, positive views of American Muslims have risen since 2002, when memories of 9/11 were still fresh in most Americans' minds," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "In 2002, as the first anniversary of the 9/11 attacks approached, only 39 percent of all Americans said they had a favorable view of Muslims."

Americans in the South and rural communities are far less likely to have a favorable view of American Muslims, with just 32% saying they hold such views.

Thirty seven percent of rural Southerners say they don't know enough to have an opinion.

When it comes to attitudes towards the Muslim faith itself, however, American opinions haven't changed much.

"In 2002, 28 percent of all Americans had a favorable view of Islam and 33 percent feel that way today," Holland says.

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey was conducted March 11-13, with 1,023 people questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

Would you take a Nazi in America seriously in 1944? We are literally allowing them to gain strength trough our laws.
Yet, if they gain power, the wussy libs and their gae friends would be murdered first.
Look at their home countries? NO RELIGIOUS FREEDOM! Is this what you want?

This is the way it usually is. The most ignorant, violent, hateful people form only a small percent of the population. Unfortunately, they are also the percentage that is most likely to take action. And politicians play on this in order to get votes. They shamelessly use prejudice and hatred to rouse their hordes of ignorant followers, and every step forward we make as a species is erased by the dozens of steps back taken by the ignorant.

RobA, Did you actually LOOK at the pictures of the Fogel? Did you SEE the Palestinians handing out candy in celebration? So who is the hateful, intolerant bigot here? These people DESERVE every bit of retaliation that's coming to them. If you love them and their religion so much, why don't you move to the West Bank or Gaza-but be prepared for a little white phosphorus artillery to thump your superior melon. Sorry, you don't get the islamic useful idiot of year award. Prothero won that.

And did you see the Israelis dancing after throwing Palestinians out of their own house. And did you see them laughing when they shot a child throwing rocks at a tank? If you cant respect you might as well stay silent and not say anything at all as you seem as your completely unaware of reality.

I was both born and raised in the south. I don't know why the south is the way it is, but I STRONGLY disagree. I would have no problem with a mosque in my neighborhood. I am a proud southern woman and I have to say that this backwoods, everything's black and white, stay off my land, over extended selfworth look at life has to end.

      @Keith:

Which religion perpetrated the Crusades, which went a long way toward creating hatred and resentment between Islam and Christianity? Christianity started the fight, and they use whatever retaliation happens as an excuse to keep fighting.

RobA, So, the Crusades are the reason Palestinian sc-um sneaked into a house and murdered a 3-month-old, 3-year-old, 11-year-old and their parents. So glad you explained that to me you super genious, you. Tell me Rob, will you be handing out candy in celebration with the rest of the Palestinians or holding the knife. Taking 1 example while ignoring all of the others is the philosophy of Islam as we all know it very well.
Attacking people personally and calling them names as you just did is also another disrespectful way of Islam.
      ...
Breaking in houses, slaughtering parents in front of their children, killing children,
steeling their money, burning their homes and running away with all that is a disgrace to ALL human kind.
All this is happening now in Egypt all over the cities....happening to Christian Coptic families only!!!
The police caught few and they brought certificates from doctors declaring that these people who committed the killing are "Mentally Retarded" ...so we can not punish them.
      ...
This is what Islam says to slaughter and kill all those who are not muslims!!!

Rob A: You might ask yourself, what religions existed in the Holy Land prior to Muslim conquest? Which religions had to give territory over the course of 400 years to attackers who then taxed them heavily and treated them as second-class citizens, or sold them into slavery? the Crusades didn't happen until Constantinople was in peril and the Archbishop of the eastern Church begged the pope to help him defend non-Muslim lands from Islamic incursions. Then the Crusaders marched to Jerusalem to RECLAIM cities of religious/historic significance. The Muslims had turned the Church of the Holy Sepulchre into stables. Did the Crusaders commit atrocities? Of course–it was a brutal era. But the Crusades were an answer to centuries of Muslim aggression. Maybe some of the Crusaders did some bad things, but they went on the Crusades for the right reasons.

I would not only welcome a mosque in my neighborhood, I would deliberately move to a neighborhood that had a mosque, as my many years of experience in the Middle East (thirteen years in three different countries) tells me that Muslims are good neighbors, exhibiting a hospitality that puts most American Christians to shame. And I say that as a Christian pastor who lived openly as a Christian pastor in these countries. A community anchored by a mosque would be exactly the kind of community I would want to live in.

      "Islam’s Koran and World Domination

Mohammed could not have known the size of the world, but several passages in the Koran show that he envisioned Islam dominating all of it, however large it might be: “He it is who sent his messenger . . . that he may cause it [Islam] to prevail over all religions´(Koran 9:33, M.M. Ali; see also 48:28 and 61:9). M.M. Ali designates these three passages as “the prophecy of the ultimate triumph of Islam in the whole world.”

Mohammed’s successors, the caliphs, quoted passages like these to inspire Muslim armies as they advanced out of Arabia, imposing Islam by the sword upon a peacefully unsuspecting Middle East and North Africa, as I described in the previous chapter.

Islamic armies, imbued with what Mohammed claimed was divine authorization, imposed Islam by force over vast areas, all the while extorting wealth from subjugated Jews and Christians to fund their ongoing conquests. As I noted, major defeats at Tours, France, in A.D. 732, and again at Vienna, Austria, in A.D. 1683, halted Islam’s attempt to take all of Europe by force. Gradually Islamic forces were forced to retreat from Europe, except for part of the Balkans. But Islam has again set its sights on a conquest of Europe and of European civilization, wherever the latter has spread to North and South America and other regions. Muslim strategists ask their followers, Why do we find in these modern times that Allah has entrusted most of the world’s oil wealth primarily to Muslim nations?

Their answer: Allah foresaw Islam’s need for funds to finance a final politico-religious victory over what Islam perceives as its ultimate enemy: Christianized Euro-American civilization. So, Islam follows Nazism, fascism and communism as the world’s latest hostile takeover aspirant.

Nazis, fascists and communists failed. Does Islam have a better chance at success? I believe it will flounder if we awaken to its threat in time; yet, if there is not adequate planned resistance, Islam does have a better chance of succeeding. Communism’s world takeover attempt was guaranteed to fail because its economic policy was naively contrary to human nature. Advocating the rubric What is mine is thine, and what is thine is mine, communism failed to see that human nature will not keep those two balanced propositions in equilibrium. Like a female black widow spider consuming her mate, the latter part of the formula makes a meal of the former, leading to the collapse of any system based upon that formula.

In contrast, political systems do well if they can persuade people to adhere to What’s mine is mine and What’s thine is thine maxims.

Only if a strong religious incentive is added does such an idealistic formula have any long-term chance. Even then success will be spotty. But communism (and Nazism, for that matter) excluded religion. And that mistake was the final nail eventually clamping a lid on communism’s coffin. Communism, on a historical scale, perished while still in its childhood.

Islam is not repeating communism’s mistake. Mating political cunning and incredible wealth with religious zeal, Islam does have a chance to succeed and will succeed unless major parts of the Western world unite to take appropriate countermeasures. But many Western leaders, unable to believe that a mere religion could possible be a serious political threat, keep proclaiming themselves as Islam-friendly, reasoning that all religions are good-aren’t they?

A Muslim strategist in Beverly Hills, California, declared several years ago, as quoted by a friend of mine: “Now that the struggle between Western democracies and international communism is winding down, it is time for the real and final struggle to begin, and we are going to win!”- D. Richardson

*:" Is religion responsible for more more violent deaths than any other cause?

A: No, of course not – unless you define religion so broadly as to be meaningless. Just take the four deadliest events of the 20th Century – Two World Wars, Red China and the Soviet Union – no religious motivation there, unless you consider every belief system to be a religion."

Q: So, what you're saying is that religion has never killed anyone.

A: Arrgh... You all-or-nothing people drive me crazy. There are many doc-umented examples where members of one religion try to exterminate the members of another religion. Causation is always complex, but if the only difference between two warring groups is religion, then that certainly sounds like a religious conflict to me. Is it the number one cause of mass homicide in human history? No. Of the 22 worst episodes of mass killing, maybe four were primarily religious. Is that a lot? Well, it's more than the number of wars fought over soccer, or s-ex (The Trojan and Sabine Wars don't even make the list.), but less than the number fought over land, money, glory or prestige.

In my Index, I list 41 religious conflicts compared with 27 oppressions under "Communism", 24 under Colonialism, 2 under "Railroads" and 2 under "Scapegoats". Make of that what you will."

    • FAKE KORAN

      Which Koran you're talking about:
      1. the Koran given to non muslims to read which is meant to fool them
      2. the Koran twisted and changed to hide all the crap done by the muslims
      3. the Koran that states to kill all non-muslims
      ...
WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO FOOL PEOPLE....GOD IS WATCHING AND SOON WE WILL SEE JESUS CHRIST COMING ON A CLOUD TO END THIS MISERY....BE READY FOR THE END OF THE WORLD IS AT HAND 🙂

First, your grammar is atrocious and that is being quite reserved. Second, I can tell you are a child because only children view others with such generalities. Read up on Islam and not just current events, but what they have contributed to the world as far as science and modern medicine.

    • Islam States to be Violent

If Kenny is child, then I don't blame him to feel that way because:
      1. the Koran implies and states to kill and destroy any non muslim.
      2. just watching TV shows the whole world how the Muslims are killing Christians and destroying Churches.
      3. Islam states that any non muslims is the enemy of Islam
      4. Oh...there are millions of reasons that muslim people know but deny to fool the non-muslims.

Why should a place of religious worship be offensive to to have in ones neighbourhood when liquior stores and lottery stores are not? Why in this countrry does it have to be a debate about how oneee woships and what they believe? While in other countries you find mosques and churches in the same area. If you believe firmly in what you believe than it should be no problem what others believe or how they worship or where. We need more religion in this country and less talk of religion

    March 24, 2011 at 1:47 pm |
    • Eric G.

While I do not agree that our country needs more religion, I would never deny anyone the right to worship. I think an interesting question would be "Which would you rather have in your neighborhood? A Mosque, or a strip club?

      March 24, 2011 at 1:53 pm |
    • TeebeeDan

I would prefer a strip-club even though it might cause more violence.

Why don't you do the same in North Africa where the Muslims: Destroy the Churches, Kill Christians in their homes, Forbid Churches to be built, Kidnap the Christian Girls, Pay money to the poor Christians to become Muslims.
What is being done in Egypt now is the future of what will happen in USA tomorrow....it's a matter of time for them to take control and increase the number of Muslims....Soon we'll see the real face of Islam!!! We will not be fooled by the Muslim lies as the Koran states that Muslims can lie and fool people for the sake of spreading the Islam. WHY MUSLIMS ARE ASKING FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION WHILE THEY ARE NOT GIVING FREEDOM TO CHRISTIANS IN AFRICA.
Why Muslims are asking for freedom of religion while they are giving NO FREEDOM TO CHRISTIANS IN THE MUSLIM COUNTRIES.

    Madmo

Pamela Geller has been utterly discredited and her group has been branded a HATE GROUP by SPLC. she is in the ranks of neo-nazis and the KK K. Incidentally, teh KKK will blame EVERYTHING on the black man, the Jew. They will say natural disasters, murders, crime, are all to be blamed on the black man. Familiar argument? Yes Pammy uses that approach, but just with muslims. Keep in mind she is not a historian (she doesn't even have a college degree), nor does she have any training on islamic studies.

She is a racist trying to get even richer than she already is with her ex-dead hubby's millions.

She most certainly is NOT in line with Nazi's and Skinheads. I was at one of her rallies in Manhatten and I was with Firefighters, Police and 911 survivors. There were Hindu speakers and well as Egyptian Coptic Christians, who only know, first hand, of what Islam brings. Funny, SPLC seems to have their own agenda and you won't find the Black Panthers or the Nation of Islam on their blotter. Connect the dots, sweetie.

It is true the much evil has been done by people of all faiths and by people of no faith. All societys have had slaves and murders. Relegion Christian, Muslim. Jewish, Pagan, and all others have been used by evil people to do evil things. The teaching of all relegions are peacful. All the books have versus in them that seem to insite violence espeaalo=illy whne taken out ot cotext of the whole written. This is not a excuse for violence just a fact. Some of the Bible versus mentioned are in refernce to combat during wars, not intended as daily activity. The were also old testment Jewish not Christian, although many Christian haveused them as a excuse to to evil to others. Stop linking all beleivers to those who do evil and use their faith as a excuse. Charles Mason was a hippi atheist. By your standars all Hippi Atheist are raping murdering evil people. We know this not to be true. most atheist and most Hippis are peaceful decent people. Most Christians, jews Muslims, Pagan etc are like wise peacful decent people. In all cases it w=is a small number that behve so badly and use their faith as an excuse. It is not the dominat position or teaching of the faith although some of its leaders (crusades) support the behavior. In all cases it is really human greed, lust for power and riches, avarice that is the real problem. stop blining balme relegion and blame the people who commit the evil acts. With that said I don't really personal want a Mosque in my neighborhood. But I fully support my Muslim neighbors right to habve one any where they want. Thats to whole point of Freedom of Relegion. To build your mosque in peace

You are correct that there are Christians and atheists that have done bad things like commit murder. The big difference is that atheists don't have a book that condones murder. The Bible is full of contradictions and immoralities.

      >> The big difference is that atheists don't have a book that condones murder.

I see. So the MILLIONS and MILLIONS of people BUTCHERED by Mao, Stalin and Hitler were not done because they had a book of atheism telling them to do so. They just killed and gassed all these people simply because they were Godless Atheists without a Book. Interesting.

Corellation does not equal causation. They killed all those people because they were Communist. There's a big difference.

Hitler, by the way, was a Roman Catholic.

Stuttgart February 15, 1933: "Today they say that Christianity is in danger, that the Catholic faith is threatened. My reply to them is: for the time being, Christians and not international atheists are now standing at Germany’s fore. I am not merely talking about Christianity; I confess that I will ally myself with the parties which aim to destroy Christianity. Fourteen years they have gone arm in arm with atheism. At no time was greater damage ever done to Christianity than in those years when the Christian parties ruled side by side with those who denied the very existence of God. It shall be our task to burn out these manifestations of degeneracy in literature, theater, schools, and the press."

That muslims are trying to take over america is utterly ridiculous and i'd say downright retarded. Mayhap a small fraction of muslims want to take over America, the world, Mars, whatever. Guess what these types are called – EXTREMISTS. There are those in Christianity (lots of those in Christianity – I'd say half of America are extremist Christians) in Judaism, in Hinduism, etc. The majority of the 1.5 BILLION muslims and American muslims living in 40 plus muslim majority nations (ranging from secular democracies to dictatorships to monarchs) interpret the religion differently from these few and want to just freakin live their lives. Relgions are interpreted by individuals differently and across a spectrum. For example in Islam, Saudi (99% muslim) is 180 degrees different from Turkey (99% muslim). Bunch of racist morons on this blog. 9/11 had nothing to do with the Quran and EVERYTHING to do with manipulation, idiocy and U.S. foreign policy.

So many people like to speak of western imperialism. Islam grew out of Mecca in the 7th century to expand into much of northern africa, southern Europe, into asia, all the way east to Indonesia. While western influence receeds, after so many remarkable contributions to humankind in general, the Muslim world gets larger through violence and intimidation.
So many allow it to happen just as long as they think they won't be affected. But, historically, eventually they will be.

      Now THAT's imperialism!

Just remember, the so-called moderates you mention still wouldn't mind stoning for adultry, they just won't fly planes into buildings to make it happen.

      March 24, 2011 at 2:26 pm |
    • BOB2

Stoning occurs in just IRAN only out of 60plus muslim countries, it's ridiculous to paint all for one .....
it's their regional custom of punishment and nothing to do with Islam.
      Ignorance is bliss.....
Majority of Americans don't really know the true Islam, they either misled by biased media or others blogs
