Christian to Muslim: A change of faith

Editor’s Note: "Unwelcome: The Muslims Next Door" features the Muslim community of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where Matthew Miller has lived since age 15. CNN’s Soledad O’Brien chronicles the dramatic fight over the construction of a mosque in the heart of the Bible belt. “Unwelcome: The Muslims Next Door” airing at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. E.T. April 2 on CNN.

By Elizabeth M. Nunez, CNN

The actual conversion was brief. It only involved one sentence: “I bear witness that there is no God worthy of worship but God, I bear witness that Mohammed is the messenger of God.”

For 30-year-old Mathew Miller, those words represented the culmination of a long religious transformation from Christianity to Islam.

Miller is a digital media communications major at Middle Tennessee University and works part-time at a golf course. He was raised Christian in California, surfing and dreaming of being a radio DJ.

“My first interaction with Islam was this movie called ‘Not Without my Daughter’. That was my first glimpse into what Western society believed was really going on in Islam,” he said.

"Not Without My Daughter" is a 1991 film in which Sally Field portrays an America woman who flees from Iran with her daughter. The movie, based on true story detailed in a book by the same title, was faulted by critics for portraying a stereotypical view of Iranians and Islam.

But in questioning his own beliefs, and after a conversation with a Muslim friend, Miller’s interest in Islam was piqued.

“I think for the most part I was afraid, don’t really know of what,” he said.

Later, attending Friday prayers at a small Mosque in Murfreesboro, he began to learn more.

“When I put my head on the ground with them, it felt like I could say anything to God, and what I was asking for at the time was guidance. I wanted to know whether what I was doing was the right thing to do.”

His mother had long expected his change of religious faith. “I told my mother I was Muslim in Disneyland. She said ‘I don’t necessarily know if I feel good about it, but if it makes you happy and it’s what you feel is the right way, then there’s nothing I can do.’”

Now he regularly worships at the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro mosque.

Miller, a white convert in a diverse congregation, has heard comments about his faith - and the controversy surrounding his mosque. Once, an Iraqi war veteran told him that the new controversial Islamic Center of Murfreesboro should not be built because it could potentially harbor terrorists.

“I addressed his questions formally and it was funny because at the end of the conversation, he kind of started admitting, 'Well you know, I don’t know anything about Islam.”

Jehovah, God, Elohim these was all the different names refering to a GOD in the Bible. When you look at the devil as well he was refered with different Names, but had different motives. LUCIFER, DEVIL, Satan. We look at the bible and the Coran, we see the similar passages and names that are in both books. But what is also interesting is that Greek Mythology is also in the bible. We need to understand that religion was built to give hope, control and guide people in a "positive and fearful" path. All of it is not the root of FAITH and Sprituality, seperate from RELIGION, we have reconize that first.

Different names, same kind of ration thought neglect. Wht swap out one type of crazy for another? Even worse arguing with others over who's crazy is better. This stuff holds the human species back period.

Lucifer is actually in the bible. That was a mistranslation of "Morning Star" that was mistaken for alternate name of the Devil. The scripture that uses it, somewhere in Isaiah, is actually a reference to the King of Babylon. Whether it has dual meaning and refers to the devil as well is an Academic Discussion. Context is important because there are scriptures in which Jesus is referred to as "Morning Star", but he is not called Lucifer. The point is the name "Lucifer" doesn't occur in the bible.

There is no greek mythology in the bible.

CW – this is good to know. If they are not mentioned in the bible then we shouldn't believe one word out of their pious mouths. Not that I every really believed anything the hate mongers like Jerry Farwell and Pat Robertson ever said, but thank you for the clarification that all of the so called religious leaders out there today are just pulling our legs – or lying to us. I’m thinking both are correct.

Where are women in this "worship service?" That is one of my big problems with Islam, it seems that women are usually segregated out or treated as second class citizens.

It makes a HUGE difference. The Christian God will judge all men to eternity. Islam says that a MUSLIM must destroy a non-believer if they refuse to convert to Allah. I you can't wrap your brain around the difference, you probably believe that Obama's budgets will not add to the national debt. So sad.

Religion is a belief system that you are fed when young and that you never really truly understand and when you don't have an answer to questions they tell you it's faith… but yet many fear to live without it, so try other religions and see if they make any sense.

Islam is an inherently dangerous cult. Its "saints" are warriors and they despise Western values. They smile at us with their mouth but they hate us with their heart. One of the basic tenets of the Koran is that all infidels must either convert or DIE, and they will make sure that happens as the militant faction has shown us over the last decade.

This case is so typical. A psychologically confused person "accepts" Islam without knowing anything about it, without ever having read the Koran or the sayings of Muhammad. He just feels good praying on his knees with his head hitting the floor. But, he knows nothing of Islam, and nobody told him. His conversion is like signing a contract without reading it. Here are just some of the provisions in that contract he signed without reading it:
    FROM THE KORAN:
–“ the (only) religion (acceptable) before God is Islam." (3:19)
    - " If anyone desires a religion other than Islam, never will it be accepted of him." (3: 85)
    - “You are the noblest community ever raised up for mankind.” (3:110)
    - The unbelievers among the people of the book and the pagans shall burn forever in the fire of Hell. They are the vilest of all creatures. (98.6).
    - Surely the vilest of animals in Allah’s sight are those who disbelieve. (8.55)
–The unbelievers are your inveterate enemy. (4:101)
    - Mohammed is God's apostle. Those who follow him are ruthless to the unbelievers but merciful to one another. (48:29).
    - It is unlawful for a believer to kill another believer, accidents excepted. (4:92)
    - Believers, take neither the Jews nor the Christians for your friends. (5:51)
    - Make war on them until idolatry shall cease and God's religion shall reign supreme. (8:40)
    - Fight against them until idolatry is no more and God's religion reigns supreme. (2:193)
    - The true believers fight for the cause of God, but the infidels fight for the devil. (4:76)
    - We will put terror into the hearts of the unbelievers. (3:151)
    - I shall cast terror into the hearts of the infidels. Strike off their heads, strike off the very tips of their fingers. (8:12)
    FROM THE SAYINGS OF MUHAMMAD:
    - Muhammad said to the Jews: "If you embrace Islam, you will be safe. You should know that the earth belongs to Allah and His Apostle, and I want to expel you from this land. “
    - Allah's Apostle said, "You (i.e. Muslims) will fight with the Jews till some of them will hide behind stones. The stones will (betray them) saying, 'O 'Abdullah (i.e. slave of Allah)! There is a Jew hiding behind me; so kill him.' "
    - Mohammed said, "I have been ordered to fight with the people till they say, "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and whoever says, " None has the right to be worshipped but Allah , his life and property will be saved by me." (otherwise it will not).
    - Mohammed said, "Whoever changes his Islamic religion, kill him."
    - Muhammad said: "Fight in the name of Allah and in the way of Allah. Fight against those who disbelieve in Allah. Make a holy war, …"

You can be sure that he did not know any of this. Yet, he is now committed to these doctrines!

@Billy K, the bible doesn't follow that verse with "ye shall fight and kill anyone that puts another god before him". That's the point. Other religions feel their God is the supreme being and leader, but NO religion should promote death and victory by all means necessary to spread their ideology. To hell with the Muslims! I can't be bothered to check all of this stuff, but I checked the searchable Koran at http://quod.lib.umich.edu/k/koran/ and it does indeed say what it claims is said in 8:12. A little at odds with the claim that Islam is a religion of peace? But then the Crusaders were a little at odds with the same claim about Christianity. Hm.

–“ the (only) religion (acceptable) before God is Islam." (3:19)
      – " If anyone desires a religion other than Islam, never will it be accepted of him." (3: 85)

Islam means " submission /peace arising from submission" in Arabic. This is why it is important to understand the language of what you are ready in it's proper context Abdulameer. What else but submission should God expect from His servants. Hmm?

      – “You are the noblest community ever raised up for mankind.” (3:110)

You left a bit out....was that on purpose??? "...adjoining what is right and forbidding what is evil...." and of course all what's good and evil, that's spelled out in the Quran and in the habits and actions of Muhammad....but I guess you couldn't fit all that on the page. ;0)

      – The unbelievers among the people of the book and the pagans shall burn forever in the fire of Hell. They are the vilest of all creatures. (98.6).
      – Surely the vilest of animals in Allah’s sight are those who disbelieve. (8.55)
–The unbelievers are your inveterate enemy. (4:101)
      – Mohammed is God's apostle. Those who follow him are ruthless to the unbelievers but merciful to one another. (48:29).
      – It is unlawful for a believer to kill another believer, accidents excepted. (4:92)

Why is this strange that Almighty groups His creation into believers vs non-believers... is there a final abode other than Heaven OR Hell??? You're funny. What is your faith?

      – Believers, take neither the Jews nor the Christians for your friends. (5:51)

(Allah does not forbid you respecting those who have not made war against you on account of [your] religion, and have not driven you forth from your homes, that you show them kindness (Arabic: birr) and deal with them justly; surely Allah loves the doers of justice. Allah only forbids you respecting those who made war upon you on account of [your] religion, and drove you forth from your homes and backed up [others] in your expulsion, that you make friends with them, and whoever makes friends with them, these are the unjust.) (Al-An`am 6:8-9)

And notice that the word “birr” (translated as kindness) that God used in this context is the same word that is used for the type of kindness that a Muslim should show to his/her parents, as in “birr al-walidain” (kindness to parents)! This is not just friendship but deep respect, isn’t it?

      – Make war on them until idolatry shall cease and God's religion shall reign supreme. (8:40)
      – Fight against them until idolatry is no more and God's religion reigns supreme. (2:193)
      – The true believers fight for the cause of God, but the infidels fight for the devil. (4:76)
      – We will put terror into the hearts of the unbelievers. (3:151)
      – I shall cast terror into the hearts of the infidels. Strike off their heads, strike off the very tips of their fingers. (8:12)
      FROM THE SAYINGS OF MUHAMMAD:
      – Muhammad said to the Jews: "If you embrace Islam, you will be safe. You should know that the earth belongs to Allah and His Apostle, and I want to expel you from this land. “
      – Allah's Apostle said, "You (i.e. Muslims) will fight with the Jews till some of them will hide behind stones. The stones will (betray them) saying, 'O 'Abdullah (i.e. slave of Allah)! There is a Jew hiding behind me; so kill him.' "
      – Mohammed said, "I have been ordered to fight with the people till they say, "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and whoever says, " None has the right to be worshipped but Allah , his life and property will be saved by me." (otherwise it will not).
      – Mohammed said, "Whoever changes his Islamic religion, kill him."
      – Muhammad said: "Fight in the name of Allah and in the way of Allah. Fight against those who disbelieve in Allah. Make a holy war, …"
You didn't quote the narrators of these ahadith....or did Prophet Muhammad tell you this himself, lol! Why aren't you thorough with your sources, (sahih Bukhari/ sahih Muslim, etc)? The stuff you've rounded up is not only inaccurate but clearly designed to malign the faith and the followers. Try to be accurate so that we can have a real discussion? What do you get from hiding facts or do you just not know?? If you don't know you should remain silent until you do.

Clearly, these need to be put into proper context, historical and otherwise. If you don't understand that simple fact then all hope is lost for you.

Angie this other dude is right. They are not the same God. Christians worship Jesus. Jews and Muslims have the same God. Christians turned God into Three different people in on person, stretching the definition of one God to mean something other than One. Christianity has 1/3 the same God as Jews and Muslims.

Not the same God. Educate your self. Read about the cult of Allah. You may learn things that muslims will never tell you about. The god of the Jews is I AM THAT I AM and was revealed to Moses on the mountain top. The God that Jesus spoke of is the same. Mohamed taught about this allah. He is a pagan moon god worshiped on the Arab Peninsula since way before mohamed's time. He didn't even had originality in his invention. Read before you talk please.

You need to do your research Allah is simply the Arabic word for God, sorta like dos is the spanish word for two.

This is wonderful! Muslims belive in Jesus, but we dont belive he is the son of God.
He is just a prophet. Congrats to Matthew! : )

    March 25, 2011 at 10:11 am |
    • Then you don't

@IamMuslim: Then you don't "believe" in Jesus. If Jesus isn't the son of God then he is a liar and a thief because he clearly thought and said that he was. Jesus can be the son of God, he can be a lunatic not the son of God but believing that he is or he is an evil man from the depths of hell deceiving millions. Those are your options, a good teacher isn't one of them.

John 6:44 Jesus said "No man is able to come to me if the Father who sent me does not give him the desire to come: and I will take him up from the dead on the last day" .

      God Bless You.

Actually Jesus said in the Bible that he is the son of Man and God stated in the bible that he can never be the Son of man. Jesus is not the son of God and never made such a claim, even in the Bible which is questionable in legitimate wordings of Jesus he never claims to be the Son of God in a literal sense or God.

The quote is also something Muhammad said and Muslim would not disagree. The only path to Allah is through Jesus because denying Jesus or Muhammad is denying Allah.

      @Joe
Um.... Jesus several times referred to God as "Father"... if I call someone my Father, am I not then referring to myself as their son?
John 5:17-18 "Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working."
For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God."

    • Truefax

@Mao Aren't Priests referred to as "Father" isn't the pope the "Holy Father" I'm sorry but you are wrong. Remember the context in Jesus’ time "Father", "Master" and “Lord” were practically synonymous. The Muslims refer to themselves as "Servants" in much the same way you simply misunderstand the context of the bible.

It's the same way with the Holy Spirit references; they mean the archangel Gabriel not the manifest spirit of God... Do a little bit of study. Religions are very interesting and it make excellent debates.

Jesus is from the Greek Yesus which is from Hebrew Yesu which is from Aramic Yeshua. Maybe they don't believe in god Jesus, just Rabbi Yeshu. LOL.

If Jesus is accepted as a prophet (except I don't read that in the Qur'an – I could be wrong), then why aren't His words also accepted. The Bible quotes Jesus saying He was the Son of God. The Qur'an denies that He said that. In fact, it relates a scene where Jesus appears before Allah and apologizes for the confusion on earth. The only 'confusion' is in the Qur'an iteself.

Joe wrote above "Actually Jesus said in the Bible that he is the son of Man and God stated in the bible that he can never be the Son of man." This is a blatent lie. Jesus said so on several occasions. Please provide chapter and verse to justify your lie Mr. Joe.

Joe also wrote " Jesus is not the son of God and never made such a claim, even in the Bible which is questionable in legitimate wordings of Jesus he never claims to be the Son of God in a literal sense or God." Another lie. Jesus did indeed make the statement several times. Jesus performed miracles of numerous type and rose again after being crucified – an event that is recorded in several secular historical records AS WELL AS the pages of the Bible.

Joe is either a very confused person or a pathetic liar.

Allah MEANS God. People like you should realize there's more than one language in the world.

Allah is the Arabic translation for god. Seeing as Jesus and Mary are held in very high regard, and that Jesus is quoted much more than Muhammad in the Quran, it's safe to say that it is the same Abrahamic god.

So what's your point? Your god is bigger than my god? Sounds like penis envy to me.

      March 25, 2011 at 10:22 am |
    • Joe

Allah is not a moon god. Allah simply means God in Arabic. The name Allah is used in the Bible and Torah in their Arabic versions so stop being a ignorant. The moon symbol was actually a pagan symbol used by the Romans for the god Apollo I believe, not 100%. Never the less it was used as the flag for the city of Constantinople and when the Turks took over Constantinople they adopted the flag. Since the Ottoman Turks ruled over North Africa and the Middle East for centuries the symbol of the crescent and star became a common symbol of Islam. Personally I hate the symbol and hate to see it at mosques because it was never used at the time of Muhammad and is an innovation.

Wow, so many people think that they're the same by only looking at the similarities and not the differences.
Is a man a woman because they're both human? Is a jellyfish an octopus because they both don't have spines. Is there and their the same word because they sound the same. Does gay mean the same thing it did 50 years ago?
Neither are Jehovah and the Islamic Allah the same because of how different they are. As a Muslim if Jesus is God and you'll see the difference.

Those who assume that all gods are the same don't know much. Allah and the God of Christianity are polar opposites. Allah orders killings and beatings and jihad. He stones women and cuts off heads and hands. Jesus died for our sins, sent his followers also to live and die for others, tells us to forgive and love our enemies. Total opposites.

Jehovah is no god either. Jehovah is basterdization of the Hebrew word Yehweh which probably means "Yahoo". Allah is acronym of Arabic word "Al Ilah" or "The God". Ilah is from Hebrew Eloh or just El which was the god of Cananites which Jews stole from them after slaughtering all of them.

Stop believing in fairy tales, starting from jewish mythology (old testament), and the world would be good

@Joe. Actually when Constantinople was conquered, the moon was in the shape of crescent with a bright star in front. This began symbol of Ottomon empire and te rest of Moslems. So Allah can not be moon god. Star-and-crescent-god maybe, but not moon god.

You hit the nail right on the head–about Islam, not about you being a redneck. Facts are facts and Islam can't explain away it's 7th century backwardness and cruelty in this 21st century world. And yes, more than any other major religion on Earth.

A death cult that is strikingly similar to Christianity? Maybe if you actually studied Islam from an unbiased viewpoint you would understand what fosters extremism and why certain things happen. Maybe then you'll realize that we've been bringing these terrorist acts upon ourselves for year, and pretend that we're the innocent victims.

    • Peacemaker

Oh......... Bob, really? Have you not read the Bible?? The Bible is filled with passages about all sorts of hideous things! Be careful not to judge and condemn an entire group of people, in this case, Muslims, because some of them are terrorists! How about White Supremacists? How about Nazis? Do you condemn the Germans because once they supported the Nazis?

Take the plank out of your own eye first, before you look at the speck in your brother's eye!

For such a "modern" seeming man, I'm surprised he seems ok with a religion that doesn't allow women to worship with men.

    March 25, 2011 at 10:10 am |
    • Angie

That's because in Muslim prayer you bend over and put your head on the floor. How would it be if a bunch of women bent over in front of men...that wouldn't make much sense, now would it because the men would stare at their butts.

lestalk...is there something wrong with doing what your husband says???? Wow, I'm confused. I guess I should start cheating on my husband and disrespecting him....

      March 25, 2011 at 10:20 am |
    • Stephy

      @Angie
Don't you have a mind of your own? Aren't you educated yourself? Do you really believe that your husband has a better understanding of the world or knows what's best for you simply because he is a man? Really? Really??? Imagine if women were the so called 'head of the houshold' and men were told to submit to their will, what outrage that would cause! Both men and women can and SHOULD think for themselves, make decisions for themselves and compromise in a relationship EQUALLY!!!

      March 25, 2011 at 10:27 am |
    • Ethan

Angie, there is a happy medium between doing everything your spouse says and cheating on them. It's called an egalitarian relationship. Equal respect, value, understanding, etc. Research shows marriage that strives for equal partnership is the typically the happiest.

      March 25, 2011 at 10:29 am |
    • Joe

A Muslim man is supposed to do whatever his wife says. It is an equal relationship. And in Islam the woman has the power in the house, the man is the provider and protector but the woman is the leader.

      March 25, 2011 at 10:35 am |
    • lestalk

@Angie, there is nothing wrong with listening to your husband if your husband respects you. Any religion that treats women as a door mat seems pretty disrespectful to me. Reminds me of the Mulsim man who beheaded his wife because she was going to leave him, and what about the Muslim man who ran over his own DAUGHTER because she wanted to convert to Chrisitanity. Yeah, got to love those respectful Muslim men.

      March 25, 2011 at 10:42 am |
    • Muslim

@lestalk, if you want to find Muslims who violate Islam you will find millions of examples not only your two examples, I will give you more, a Mulsim man in Bangladesh got mad at his wife so he locked her up in a care and set it on fire. Now does this represent Islam, absolutely not, cause I can say the same thing about Christianity. There was a story in the news a few yrs ago about a guy who microwaved his baby daughter alive, and he was working to become a priest, Also what about Timothy MacVay, was he Muslim? I will say it again, don't judge a religion by the actions of the followers, cause they will violate it all the time, its human nature.

women don't worship with men or men don't worship with women, because, men and women will not simply focus on god, if they are together.

For those who attack Islam and misunderstand it are no less than the terrorists. Uneducated, illiterate, and narrow-minded. Women in Islam are treated like pearls. Prophet Mohammad once raged a war against someone who harassed a woman in public. I mean, come on, how many Christian men in America would do that? Women in Islam have respect unlike the women in America who sleep with any guy they want every night and wake up next morning not knowing who she slept with. Is this how women are treated in America/ Christianity?! Open your eye buddy. The truth is tough to swallow.

    • Nationof786

@MadMo: I assume you never been into any Islamic Prayer Hall? Maybe so. Hence the reason why you make such immature comments. Knowledge of the day for you: In Islamic Prayer Halls both Women and Men are worshiping Allah (God) equally. There is either a curtain or a wall between women and men so both genders will not focus on each-other while praying. Therefore, neither women or men will look at each-others gluteus maximus. Praying is entirely focused on God.

Hope you enjoyed the knowledge of the day, MadMo. Now grow up and speak and think like a mature adult. Have a good day.
