Your take: Is American Muslim alienation valid?

Lots of provocative comments on our story about Muslims in one of the country's biggest and oldest Muslim enclaves feeling alienated in their own country. Many commenters are critical of American Muslims; many others sympathetic and supportive.

But the responses are all over the map and largely defy such easy categorization.

Here's a sampling:

Joe from Kalispell
The fact there is even a "Muslim Enclave" is scary. They already wanted to be separate to not be "polluted by American values." They are really pushing their First Amendment right because I am sure the Founding Fathers didn't mean to afford protection to a religion so opposed to our existence as is Islam.

JustAHuman
It is sad to see so much hate in this country and little education about other cultures and religions. In many instances we "Americans" bring destructions upon ourselves and we are blind to see why.

joe
These Muslims are safer in this country than anywhere else in the world. if they think they are unsafe here let them leave.

freeddoom
If you are really sick of them, then don't buy their oil, don't invade their countries, dont kill them, don't steal their land, don't prop up dictators to take their freedom away. I bet they have more reason to be sick of you buddy.

Maya
Islam literally means "submission" to God. Therefore, any human being that submits himself to God is considered to be following "Islam." what that means is, if you are a christian, who submits yourself to God, then you are in fact upholding Islam. You really do have to put the verse into context and understand the exact meanings. Here are a few verse for you to ponder upon:

"Surely those who believe, and those who are Jews, and the Christians, and the Sabians – whoever believes in God and the Last Day and does good, they shall have their reward from their Lord. And there will be no fear for them, nor shall they grieve" (2:62, 5:69, and many other verses).

Kat
Reality, funny because the terrorists never say they do in the name of Islam or to convert people to Islam or force Islam on America. They only complain about the hostile US policies and wars, and its support to Israeli atrocities, many supporters belong to religious  believers who want to see Armageddon and end of the world.

I know the media and politicians tell you that it's all about religion to mute any serious discussion of the root cause of terror.

Wirius
I am not a Muslim. I am APPALLED at the people who profess to faith in God, their ignorant accusations against the Muslim population in America. There are millions of Muslims in America. Some are poor, some are wealthy. Some are devout, some aren't so devout. Some are saints, some are sinners. Muslims are people, just like you and I. The good Muslim, which is the majority, seeks to better theirs, and others lives around them. Don't let the extremists paint your view of many good people. Don't let the fact that third world dictatorships use the Muslim religions blind you to how terrible Christianity was when it was tied to the king. In short, religious people should be showing support and care for the Muslims in our community.

Irritated
I am a Muslim WHITE AMERICAN who can trace family roots back to the 13 original colonies you idiot. This is my country. Accept it.

Sick and evil! I will never trust them. I will forever remember Nic, Daniel Pearl, and the victims of 09.11 and countless others who have died at the hands of these monsters. I am angry at whoever created this mess by allowing this cult in the door. Immigration control – Yesterday!!

Why can't secular America take it all? This is exactly what you wanted. Muslims are far normal than hedonists.

Here in Minneapolis Minnesota we have a huge Somalian Muslim population. From what I have read, many can not speak or write in English which would make it difficult to assimilate into our culture; obviously this is only the tip of the iceberg.

That is like asking: have you stopped beating your wife?

      "Beating your wife"?
What century are you living in? Nobody has wives anymore, most christians fornicate out of wedlock nowadays, and most atheists (ex-christians) don't even know what a wife or a mother is.

      - Rather sad you do not understand that "have you stopped beating your wife" is a standard illustration, in philosophy, of how a question can actually be ill-formed, as the original CCN question was.

Perhaps what we should take away from this is that the average American Islamist is poorly educated, like yourself.

Not comparing. Domestic violence isn't limited to any medially-classified group. And associating 'evil Muslims' with domestic violence can make (non-)Muslim victims of domestic violence feel more isolated.

Then explain how to deal with the inevitable conflicts that arise.
If there is no question in your mind about religious freedom, then it should be clear to you.
How do we allow all religions and non-religious people freedom to worship as they wish without infringing upon the freedoms of others who do not share their religion?

The expression of religion must needs be kept private and, as a consequence, more "holy" by being "set apart" and protected as well.
To allow complete freedom is to allow murder in the name of a religion. That would be insane.
So even within a religion, they must follow all the laws of this country or they are common criminals.

Many religions break our laws either because of their religious doctrine or their individual interpretations expressed in criminal actions. Like a Muslim cutting off someone's head for Allah or a Catholic molesting children, an individual commits a crime even when part of a mob.
So you cannot ever use a religion as an excuse for a crime in the USA, or at least that's the way it should be......!

What happened to Camelia Shehata happened some years ago in the case of Wafa Constantine, a Christian woman who converted to Islam and was handed back to the church, and whose fate remains a secret to this day, amidst rumors that she died or was killed. The tragedy of Camelia Shehata suggests a grave defect in the function of the state and the function of the church.

Do you want some real stories and not just talk!!! Please read the story of Kamilia shehata the 25y who converted; Recently, a tragic sectarian incident took place in Egypt, after the disappearance of Mrs Camelia Shehata, the wife of the Coptic priest of Deir Mawas in Minya in southern Egypt. The church tried to put pressure on the state through large demonstrations which spread from Minya to Cairo. The police did not prevent the Coptic demonstrations, or beat or detain the demonstrators, as they usually do with demonstrators calling for democracy. The Coptic Pope Shenouda hinted at a possible internationalization of the Camelia Shehata case, if the Egyptian security agencies did not produce her immediately. It emerged that Camelia Shehata had converted to Islam and had gone to the Azhar mosque in Cairo to declare her conversion, whereupon the staff at the Azhar, a bastion of Islam, gave in to instructions from the security agencies and declined to complete the conversion formalities. In fact, instead of protecting her, the security agencies abducted her and handed her over to the church, which held her somewhere secret. When Muslims started demonstrating in favor of Camelia Shehata's right to convert to Islam, the police beat and detained them. Just type her name in google and get the right info.

Rhama - You story is peripheral to what we are discussing.

Nevertheless, you seem to have omitted a key item: The only reason she converted to Islam - it is claimed –was so that she could divorce her husband, which was not allowed by the Egyptian Coptic Church.

Since Moubark stepped down in Egypt, Muslims are gaining control of Egypt and it seems the Army is handing over the power to Muslims. Here is what they did in three weeks:

    1. Kidnapped four young girls to force them becoming Muslims.
    2. Burned a Church in Helwan, forced over 200 families to move out of the city.
    3. Muslims attached four monasteries where monks are residing and killed one person.
    4. They killed a Christian pharmacist while she was working in Deir Moas City.
    5. Last Sunday, they forced Christian not enter their churches and hold the priests hostage.
    6. In El Minya, they forced the Bishop to pray in a tent.
    7. In Kina, they enforced Sharia Law on a Christian and cut his ear off, burn his apartment and his car.

i would like to say some thing to put an end to this crap:In Islam according to the Qur'an, one of the greatest sins is to kill a human being who has committed no fault. "For that cause We decreed for the Children of Israel that whosoever killeth a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption in the earth, it shall be as if he had killed all mankind, and whoso saveth the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind."[Qur'an 5:32] "Those who invoke not, with Allah, any other god, nor slay such life as Allah has made sacred except for just cause, nor commit fornication; – and any that does this (not only) meets punishment. "[Qur'an 25:68]

"innocence / no fault" is in the context of a system of law. And any system of law is, or had been, misused for persecution of eg. political opponents in just about every country probably.

The Q'ran, like any successful holy book, includes a lot of stuff. You can find passages to back up lots of different positions. After all, during the American Civil War the Bible taught the United States two things: (1) God wanted American to free its slaves and (2) God wanted American to not free its slaves.

Anyone quoting sacred texts to discredit a religion is a fool with no understanding of how religion actually works in the real world.

Any religion with over one and half billion adherents is pretty successful if you ask me. Of course, it must be pretty easy for you to hold your bigoted opinions if you can find excuses to not read a simple three sentence statement in the first clause.

      How about this:
"The Bible, like any successful holy book, includes a lot of stuff. You can find passages to back up lots of different positions. After all, during the American Civil War the Bible taught the United States two things: (1) God wanted American to free its slaves and (2) God wanted American to not free its slaves.

Over 100,000 (and counting) Muslim civilians killed killed by "Christian" invaders into Iraq and Afghanistan. 2003 – 2011

    March 28, 2011 at 6:07 pm |
    • Reality

      Hellmut,

Some elements of our War on Terror and Aggression:

-Operation Iraqi Freedom- The 24/7 Sunni-Shiite centuries-old blood feud currently being carried out in Iraq, US Troops killed in action, 3,481 and 924 died in non-combat, 97,172 – 106,047 Iraqi civilians killed as of 8/10/2010 mostly due to the Shiite and Sunni suicide bombers.

      – Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan: US troops 1,141 killed in action, 242 killed in non-combat situations as of 03/03/2011. Over 40,000 Afghan civilians killed due to the dark-age, koranic-driven Taliban acts of horror,

      – Sa-dd-am, his sons and major he-nchmen have been deleted. Sa-dd-am's bravado about WMD was one of his major mistakes. Kuwait was saved.

      – Iran is being been contained. (beside containing the Sunni-Shiite civil war in Baghdad, that is the main reason we are in Iraq. And yes, essential oil continues to flow from the region.)

      – North Korea is still u-ncivil but is contained.

      – Northern Ireland is finally at peace.

      – The Jews and Palestinians are being separated by walls. Hopefully the walls will follow the 1948 UN accords. Unfortunately the Annapolis Peace Conference was not successful. And unfortunately the recent events in Gaza has put this situation back to “squ-are one”. And this significant stupidity is driven by the mythical foundations of both religions!!!

      – Bin La-d-en has been cornered under a rock in Western Pakistan since 9/11.

      – Fa-na–tical Islam has basically been contained to the Middle East but a wall between India and Pakistan would be a plus for world peace. Ditto for a wall between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

      – Timothy McVeigh was exe-cuted. Terry Nichols will follow soon.

      – Eric Ru-dolph is spending three life terms in pri-son with no par-ole.

      – Jim Jones, David Koresh, Kaczynski, the "nuns" from Rwanda, and the KKK were all dealt with and either eliminated themselves or are being punished.

      – Islamic Sudan, Dar-fur and So-malia are still terror hot spots.

      – The terror and tor-ture of Muslims in Bosnia, Kosovo and Kuwait were ended by the proper application of the military forces of the USA and her freedom-loving friends. Ra-dovan Karadzic was finally captured on 7/23/08 and is charged with genocide, crimes against humanity and violations of the law of war – charges related to the 1992-1995 civil war that followed Bosnia-Herzegovina's secession from Yugoslavia.

      – And of course the bloody terror brought about by the Ja-panese, Na-zis and Co-mmunists was with great difficulty eliminated by the good guys.

    The topic's question:

"Your take: Is American Muslim alienation valid? Yes!!!!!

    Why you ask?

What instigated the attack on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon? And what drives today's 24/7 mosque/imam-driven acts of terror and horror? The koran, Mohammed's book of death for all infidels and Muslim domination of the world by any means. Muslims must clean up this book removing said passages admitting that they are based on the Gabriel myth and therefore obviously the hallucinations and/or lies of Mohammed. Then we can talk about the safety and location of mosques and what is taught therein. Until then, no male Muslim can be trusted anytime or anywhere..................................

Hellmut, why are Muslims waiting for Allah to do something about it?

Reality, psychopaths/sociopaths come in all walks of life. Young or old. Male or female. Any religion, any nationality. No matter how you try to pin this evil on one walk of life, you can't. Most people are decent, hard working, honest. Then there is that small core of folks that are devoid of emotions. Say what they want any time they want and not mean a thing that comes out of their mouths. Hey, we have some home grown ones here in the Good ole USA. I've met them personally as they destroyed my life and the courts gave them a slap on the wrist.

      Amen.

"No matter how you try to pin this evil on one walk of life, you can't."

You are wrong. No other 'religion' has more pervasive core beliefs and practices of hatred, repression, and subjugation as does Islam. Indeed, it's not a difficult task at all to pin evil on this particular "walk of life." To make suggestions to the contrary or to attempt to otherwise mitigate the Islamic agenda simply makes you a party to it.

lol this is honestly the worst and most radical comment I have seen, really talking about how many muslims have killed does not state anything you want me to remind you of

      The Crusades (9 million)
Drug cartels ( cant really say at this moment it keeps increasing by the day)
The U.s invasions of countries more than my hands can show
      world war 1 (50 Million+ dead)
world war 2 (over 70 millions lives were lost)
the Thirty years war by the roman empire (which was Christian at the time) 11 million
french war of religion which was between Catholics and Protestants know that number? (around 4 million)
Deluge (the polish and lithuanian commonwealth) 4 million..
Napoleonic war ( ofcourse by napoleon) around 5million – 6 million

etc and etc I don't want to continue because these only surpasses the amount of muslims that have killed by what 10/1?

These are some of the (christian killings) that you have completely forgotten. Next time you post about how many muslims killed make sure its around the millions that I have posted, make sure you read what the Qur'an really speaks about because I don't have time to speak to numb heads who are uneducated and I'm sure cant even find their own country on the map, simply just idiots roaming around CNN

Just wondering what the some think about Muslims born in the United States. Do you think they are a threat, not a threat, or more of a threat than an immigrant Muslims? And why?

Just wondering what some of you think of the Westboro Christians mocking the funerals of American soldiers?

Guess what. If WBC numbered 1.6b we might care.

Stop it. Stop this transparent attempt at deflecting the issue. The issue is Islam. And yes, if someone identifies themselves as a Muslim, then I consider them an inherent threat to our country based upon the precepts of the Koran.

After all, the Koran is perfect, right?

there are a lot of alienated and prone to violence American youth from broken homes across the nation. Some join the US Army, some join the street gangs in inner cities, some end up in jail, and some join Islam. To say that the ones who join Islam are any more of a threat than the others, is to mis-understand the problem. They are who they are because they are Americans. Islam did not make them violent. They are no different than the gang ba ngers, the grunts in the army or the convicts.

Your arguments usually have at least a thread of coherency. But now you sounding like a tired, trollish ass hole. Too late for you? Maybe too early? Please. You can do better. Try harder.

Or maybe bed is a better option.

Great question. I think there is an undercurrent of racism here. People who are brown, speak with an accent, and wear traditional clothing from the middle east are more likely to be labeled a terrorist than a white woman without a hijab. Now if she puts the hijab on, all the sudden she is a radical or her foreign, brown, speaks-with-an-accent husband is oppressing her. Does that make any sense at all? I think racism is the real culprit here.

    • BG

No, jagat, the real culprit here is the Koran.

The very phrase "Muslim countries" should serve as a warning to all free nations. Look at the thousands of innocent Christians and Jews massacred in "Muslim countries" every year. Islamic history follows four steps: Infiltrate, Subvert, Overthrow, and Oppress. Islam is Satanic. If you refuse to forsake your God and join Islam, then you must die.

Guess what. I've worked with Muslims for over 20 years. On 9/11 I personally watched several of them watching tv, standing on their toes, grinning, big toothy GRINS.. while they watched the horrible events unfold.

Yeah. I know some Muslims. I know them well.

      Disappointed: You are an idiot.

I don't know Ayaan Hirsi Ali personally, but does it matter if I have read her book, read her articles, and listened to her lectures on YouTube.

as an american it makes me sad to realize that we say we value diversity but we dont really, and you can see that by looking through the comments here. we all need to make an effort to leave our comfort zone and meet with people different from ourselves so we can truly learn and appreciate instead of basing all the people of one religion off of a few fanatics. that would be akin to me saying all christians are evil because of the many, many evils we have seen from "western" nations (ie. slavery, colonialism, racism, the crusades, wacky christian cult groups, ethnic cleansing). however, i do my best to look past these evils, many of which are still occurring to this day, and give people, and more importantly hope, a chance. it's incredibly frightening that so many people are unwilling to do the same. what does this say about our country and the direction it is headed?

      lots of oxymorons here.

You want "diversity" yet certain "peoples" demand separation. I can count on 1 hand how many XYZs have struck up a conversation or more with me either in HS, college, NYC, or Washington. Not many, my friends, not many.

OK, there are many weirdos in the middle east that are using Islam as a means to do their evil deeds. These are evil people, period. But to suggest that Muslims HERE are trying to make you forsake God to join their religion? That's crazy. Muslims believe in the God of Abraham, thus the same God as Christians and Jews. Allah means "The God", that's all. It's just a religion, not unlike Christianity and Judaism. Don't get so frightened.
