Your take: Is American Muslim alienation valid?

Lots of provocative comments on our story about Muslims in one of the country's biggest and oldest Muslim enclaves feeling alienated in their own country. Many commenters are critical of American Muslims; many others sympathetic and supportive.

But the responses are all over the map and largely defy such easy categorization.

Here's a sampling:

Joe from Kalispell
The fact there is even a "Muslim Enclave" is scary. They already wanted to be separate to not be "polluted by American values." They are really pushing their First Amendment right because I am sure the Founding Fathers didn't mean to afford protection to a religion so opposed to our existence as is Islam.

It is sad to see so much hate in this country and little education about other cultures and religions. In many instances we "Americans" bring destructions upon ourselves and we are blind to see why.

These Muslims are safer in this country than anywhere else in the world. if they think they are unsafe here let them leave.

If you are really sick of them, then don't buy their oil, don't invade their countries, dont kill them, don't steal their land, don't prop up dictators to take their freedom away. I bet they have more reason to be sick of you buddy.

Islam literally means "submission" to God. Therefore, any human being that submits himself to God is considered to be following "Islam." what that means is, if you are a christian, who submits yourself to God, then you are in fact upholding Islam. You really do have to put the verse into context and understand the exact meanings. Here are a few verse for you to ponder upon:

"Surely those who believe, and those who are Jews, and the Christians, and the Sabians – whoever believes in God and the Last Day and does good, they shall have their reward from their Lord. And there will be no fear for them, nor shall they grieve" (2:62, 5:69, and many other verses).

Reality, funny because the terrorists never say they do in the name of Islam or to convert people to Islam or force Islam on America. They only complain about the hostile US policies and wars, and its support to Israeli atrocities, many supporters belong to religious  believers who want to see Armageddon and end of the world.

I know the media and politicians tell you that it's all about religion to mute any serious discussion of the root cause of terror.

I am not a Muslim. I am APPALLED at the people who profess to faith in God, their ignorant accusations against the Muslim population in America. There are millions of Muslims in America. Some are poor, some are wealthy. Some are devout, some aren't so devout. Some are saints, some are sinners. Muslims are people, just like you and I. The good Muslim, which is the majority, seeks to better theirs, and others lives around them. Don't let the extremists paint your view of many good people. Don't let the fact that third world dictatorships use the Muslim religions blind you to how terrible Christianity was when it was tied to the king. In short, religious people should be showing support and care for the Muslims in our community.

I am a Muslim WHITE AMERICAN who can trace family roots back to the 13 original colonies you idiot. This is my country. Accept it.

Sick and evil! I will never trust them. I will forever remember Nic, Daniel Pearl, and the victims of 09.11 and countless others who have died at the hands of these monsters. I am angry at whoever created this mess by allowing this cult in the door. Immigration control – Yesterday!!

[15:0] In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

[15:1] A.L.R.* These (letters) are proofs of this scripture; a profound Quran.

[15:2] Certainly, those who disbelieved will wish they were submitters.

[15:3] Let them eat, enjoy, and remain blinded by wishful thinking; they will find out.

[15:4] We never annihilated any community, except in accordance with a specific, predetermined time.

[15:5] The end of any community can never be advanced, nor delayed.

[15:6] They said, "O you who received this reminder, you are crazy.

[15:7] "Why do you not bring down the angels, if you are truthful?"

[15:8] We do not send down the angels except for specific functions. Otherwise, no one will be respited.

    God's Messenger of the Covenant*

[15:9] Absolutely, we have revealed the reminder, and, absolutely, we will preserve it.

[15:10] We have sent (messengers) before you to the communities in the past.

[15:11] Every time a messenger went to them, they ridiculed him.

[15:12] We thus control the minds of the guilty.

[15:13] Consequently, they cannot believe in him. This has been the system since the past generations.

    [15:14] Even if we opened for them a gate into the sky, through which they climb;

[15:15] they will say, "Our eyes have been deceived. We have been bewitched."

All American women who want to be subject to Sharia Law...stand up! Nobody? I thought so. Islam is a real threat to me and my daughter. If someone was building a religion that was in part based on the subjugation and castration of white men in this country, there would be ZERO tolerance for the notion. I am a veteran of the War in Afganistan. Women live like livestock there. Treasured goats rode in back seat of vehicals. Women rode in the trunk with the lid propped open. I'd rather die than live like that. And how many females get to Paradise according to the "Prophet" ? Next to none.

You, like many others, have little knowledge on the Islam religion. It is not the religion itself that objectifies women to those laws, but the governments interpret the Quran and enforce their laws.. Back in the day, women were allowed to show off their bodies. At one point the skirt length in Iran rivaled Paris.
The problem now is radical way the government is interpreting Islamic texts and the Quran.
So before you write off a religion as "dangerous for you and your daughter", you might want to research the religion for yourself before you make up your mind.

(And P.S, the bible also very harsh againt women, but churches tend to leave that part out. Did you know it's a sin to sit on a seat where a menstruating woman has previosuly sat on? Looks like we're all going to hell.)

The American Muslim alienate themselves by not wanting to assimilate and having no tolerance. They should all go and take their mexican freinds with them. All they do is stink up the country and divide real Americans.

If Muslims don't want to feel alienated, then they need to stop handing out fliers on the streets of NYC calling for 'actions against Americans". They need to stop trying to get sharia law in the U.S. They need to tell other Muslims that they won't tolerate honor killings, stonings of women, flying planes into buildings. Killing anyone who criticizes Islam. This is America. We have freedom of speech. Muslims do not want that. They do not want freedom and I have seen them holding signs saying so. I have also seen them holding signs saying 'behead all who criticize Islam'. No other religion is as violent as Islam. Google "takeover of America" + Muslim and read the reports that say what they plan for our country. They want an Islamic country by 2050. If you DON'T want that, you had better stand up for yourself now. Because it is coming. Ask Europe. They have 'no go' zones in Paris where non Muslims dare not go. Ask Theo VanGoch (who they killed). Ask the little 14 year old girl who they lashed to death in Pakistan. There is something in Islam that incites them to kill, burn, destroy. Burn a Koran? We'll kill 12 people. They cannot tolerate any other religion or any other way of thought. This is what must go.

All the dancing around who is godly and who is an animal can be distilled. Who is the most outspoken, sensitive, murderous, continually oppressive to women (don't give me that womens rights and 4 wives nonsense), polarizing, and threatening religion today??

A past poster said he was a white muslim and he could trace his line back to the colonies... fine for him, what is HE doing to stop the insantiy that seems to plague Islam everywhere it goes???

It is doubtful that Islam will have time to evolve from a cult to a religion before it disappears from the face of this planet. Mankind is incompatible with slavery and Islam is incompatible with freedom. The two will never meet; thus Islam is limited only to animals.

I honestly feel sorry for you. Your brains cannot comprehend just how wrong you really are. Islam was the first religion in the world to give women rights and to set the maximum number of wives to four. Please tell me where in the bible it gives a limit to the amount of wives you can have. Islam forbid any racism, it says in the Quran "An arab is not better than a non-arab and a non-arab is not better than an arab. A white man is not better than a black, and a black man is not better that a white. All are equal in the sight of Allah." Please tell me where in the bible it forbids racism. Islam is the champion of human rights.

i think all religions miss the point of why they were created for and who created them...love and we as humans need it...the religions of the past 2000 years have nothing of that splendor about it...apart form on going wars and hatred mixed with economic polarities, you can't always see who is who for what they truly are...perhaps the simplicity of treating each other equally is too difficult...i don't respect much any religions and religious beliefs; i simply try to set an example by being honest, truthful to my actions and kind...i admire the beauty of the earth and the universe...

We at all religions have our moderates and have our redicals ...that's why we should say that no religions should be blamed for the act of radicals....no religion should be blamed for it's differences in cultures and the understanding of the religion in each culture...
Religion is not wrong but the Religious radicals are the ones who are dead wrong...

Muslims, yes, I am concerned about them and wish they were gone back to their native country. But, I am also fearful of the Southern Baptists. I don't see much difference between the two, both are radical and both think that they have the answers and therefore, all should bow down to their brand of intolerance and religious fanaticism.

In truth, Islam is actually the most tolerant religion there is. It is a requirement in Islam to protect everyones' rights to choose and practice the religion of their choice without persecution. Unfortunately, there are those both inside and outside of the religion who do not have a firm understanding of this tenet of the religion.

I am an American Muslim, not only born & raised in this country, but I am of English descent with relatives who came over on the Mayflower hundreds of years ago. So when you say "go back to their native country", you should think a bit more about that. What do you think even gives you the right to say that, when you yourself most likely came from some other country yourself, without a long history on this land as compared with the people who arrived before the white man?

Diversity is a great characteristic of this country in my opinion, something that has the potential to make us stronger. While I can understand your fears, as I grew up in this country and had an intrinsic fear of Muslims & Islam initially, mostly due to all the misinformation we are assaulted with here in the US on the subject. But please try to be more open minded, and recognize that you yourself are representing intolerance with your own words.

Mario, your nuts. Most tolerant. Tell that to the women of your religion. Look anywhere in the world where there is trouble. What is there, Islam.

    • Mairo

Bill, you are completely ignorant and don't know anything about what you are saying. For your information, I am a woman. I know all about women's rights in Islam and also know when, where and how women's rights are not withheld throughout the world. But that has nothing to do with Islam, rather it has to do with the wrong things some people can do.

Not only that, but I have also lived many years as a woman in a Muslim country (Niger), and have seen first hand that the true Islam and Muslims are beautiful, the most beneficial way of life, supremely tolerant and peaceful, and in such contrast with what is attempted to be portrayed in the media.

Did you know that in Islam the person in life who is considered to be the most worthy and deserving of love and respect is the MOTHER. Yes, it is women who are given superiority in that aspect!!! And that those who are considered to be the best believers are those who are best with their wives, treating them with kindness and respect. Look into it . . .

Freedom of religion does not mean any religion is free from criticism. If the Inquisition was going on in Europe today, I'd feel just as compelled to speak out against Christianity as I do today with regards to Islam.
