Your take: Is American Muslim alienation valid?

Lots of provocative comments on our story about Muslims in one of the country's biggest and oldest Muslim enclaves feeling alienated in their own country. Many commenters are critical of American Muslims; many others sympathetic and supportive.

But the responses are all over the map and largely defy such easy categorization.

Here's a sampling:

Joe from Kalispell
The fact there is even a "Muslim Enclave" is scary. They already wanted to be separate to not be "polluted by American values." They are really pushing their First Amendment right because I am sure the Founding Fathers didn't mean to afford protection to a religion so opposed to our existence as is Islam.

JustAHuman
It is sad to see so much hate in this country and little education about other cultures and religions. In many instances we "Americans" bring destructions upon ourselves and we are blind to see why.

joe
These Muslims are safer in this country than anywhere else in the world. if they think they are unsafe here let them leave.

freeddoom
If you are really sick of them, then don't buy their oil, don't invade their countries, dont kill them, don't steal their land, don't prop up dictators to take their freedom away. I bet they have more reason to be sick of you buddy.

Maya
Islam literally means "submission" to God. Therefore, any human being that submits himself to God is considered to be following "Islam." what that means is, if you are a christian, who submits yourself to God, then you are in fact upholding Islam. You really do have to put the verse into context and understand the exact meanings. Here are a few verse for you to ponder upon:

"Surely those who believe, and those who are Jews, and the Christians, and the Sabians – whoever believes in God and the Last Day and does good, they shall have their reward from their Lord. And there will be no fear for them, nor shall they grieve" (2:62, 5:69, and many other verses).

Kat
Reality, funny because the terrorists never say they do in the name of Islam or to convert people to Islam or force Islam on America. They only complain about the hostile US policies and wars, and its support to Israeli atrocities, many supporters belong to religious  believers who want to see Armageddon and end of the world.

I know the media and politicians tell you that it's all about religion to mute any serious discussion of the root cause of terror.

Wirius
I am not a Muslim. I am APPALLED at the people who profess to faith in God, their ignorant accusations against the Muslim population in America. There are millions of Muslims in America. Some are poor, some are wealthy. Some are devout, some aren't so devout. Some are saints, some are sinners. Muslims are people, just like you and I. The good Muslim, which is the majority, seeks to better theirs, and others lives around them. Don't let the extremists paint your view of many good people. Don't let the fact that third world dictatorships use the Muslim religions blind you to how terrible Christianity was when it was tied to the king. In short, religious people should be showing support and care for the Muslims in our community.

Irritated
I am a Muslim WHITE AMERICAN who can trace family roots back to the 13 original colonies you idiot. This is my country. Accept it.

People need to open their eyes and see what is really going on around them. If you are going to support Muslim's them you really need to do some research and read the Qur'an instead believing what you read on blogs. It is a cult. I think alot of people have converted to Islam because they don't feel that the fit in anywhere else and Islam welcomes anyone who is willing to convert. Many Muslim's deny that they treat other people with different faiths poorly. If they are TRUE Muslim's that follow the Islamic faith then then are lying. Otherwise they are not truly Muslim. The terrorists of 911 followed the true Islamic religion. The true Islamic followers are to kill anyone who does not convert to their religion. I relate Muhhammad to the Antichrist. What makes them different than the Antichrist? They do not believe that there was a son of God. For the Christian followers; the Bible says in 2 John 1:7 I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist.

    @Anarchist

Your entire post is a hodge-podge of closed mindedness. Caring people who are genuinely concerned about growing radical Islam in America are somehow being unjust or labeling an entire belief system? What color is the sky in your world? I submit to you that although people should be judged by their own merits and actions, people are also judged by their inaction. If you have knowledge of a terror plot and allow it to happen without notifying the proper authorities, you are just as vile and guilty as those carrying out the act itself.

grow up people, every single person should be judged on their own merits and actions....no person should be judged based on others that may or may not be like them i'm sure i could find something about every single one of you that i could trace to a group or something i could demonize you over open your mind we're all here together on this earth, and only for a short period of time, i refuse to waste my time here finding something to hate about everyone

I find it amusing that muslims state that a "small minority" of Muslims subscribe to radical Islam. There are projected to be 1.9 billion Muslims worldwide. 7% of which are estimated to be "Radical Islamists". That's roughly 91 MILLION RADICAL ISLAMISTS worldwide!!! Couple that with a significantly higher percentage who may not be radical but are certainly sympathetic to radicals and we have ourselves a MAJOR threat. Those here who wish to minimize this point are either blind, ignorant, mentally challenged, naïve, brainwashed, or have ulterior motives. It's a fact that a majority of Muslim political organizations in America have radical elements and are at the very least sympathetic to the cause, if not overtly complicit. Yet we rarely hear about Muslims "outing" their more radicalized elements. If you Muslims don't like being scrutinized, join in the fight against radical Islam and report radical propaganda as it occurs instead of turning a blind eye. In short... Stop crying and do something to reverse the negative stereotypes. If you don't like the way things are done in America... You're more than welcome to leave. We're beyond political correctness at this point.

    FACTS ABOUT ISLAM:
1.There's only one religion that makes its followers kill people in its name these days: islam.
    2. Muslims never get outraged when fellow muslims blow up cars on times square, bombs during X-mas tree lighting celebrations, or take down passenger airplanes.
    3. Muslims get only outraged if someone draws a cartoon of their murdering warlord, child abuser and slavetrader mohammed but not if religious minorities get massacred in muslim countries.
    4. 126 people were indicted in the US on terror charges over the last two years. All of them were muslim.
    5. Islam is not just a religion as is the case with Western religions. It is a total way of life, and has complete systems for mankind. This means that there is no separation between state and religion. They are both embodied together under the umbrella of Islam. The state and all those in power are under the domain of God."

If Islam means 'submission' Why dont you/they submit to god and trust him to unveil things. why do you have to act on it with force and agression? just sit back and let things unfold. Im pretty sure if you dont throw a stone, the stonewont be thrown back at you. face it! GOD is just an excuse, islamic terrorists [notice i ddint say all muslims] are just a bunch of criminal minded humans who are thirsty for blood and just use whatever excuse they can get to cause havoc. In this case they use Islam.

Sorry to say I have a hard time caring about "Muslim alienation'. They have a history of emigrating to other countries but refusing to assimilate, just look at the guestworker communities in Germany and France. They're delighted to stay apart and be supported by welfare.

I also have a hard time caring about their 'alienation', when you consider the track record of Arab and Muslin countries when it comes to dealing with minorities. Jews and Christians/Copts , members of communities that are centuries OLDER than Islam have been treated with disdain and contempt for centuries. They have been the target of pogroms (race riots), restrictions on dress, culture, ability to work or educate their young in their own culture or restrictions on ability to purchase land or come in contact with Muslims. When they do succeed, despite all odds, they are attacked as "taking things away from Muslims".

    How to end the alienation:

The Five Steps To Deprogram 1400 Years of Islamic Myths:

( –The Steps take less than two minutes to finish- simply amazing, two minutes to bring peace and rationality to over one billion lost souls- Priceless!!!)

    Are you ready?

Using "The 77 Branches of Islamic "faith" a collection compiled by Imam Bayhaqi as a starting point. In it, he explains the essential virtues that reflect true "faith" (iman) through related Qur’anic verses and Prophetic sayings." i.e. a nice summary of the Koran and Islamic beliefs.

The First Five of the 77 Branches:

    "1. Belief in Allah"

aka as God, Yahweh, Zeus, Jehovah, Mother Nature, etc. should be added to your cleansing neurons.

"2. To believe that everything other than Allah was non-existent. Thereafter, Allah Most High created these things and subsequently they came into existence."

Evolution and the Big Bang or the "Gi-b G-nab" (when the universe starts to recycle) are more plausible and the "akas" for Allah should be included if you continue to be a "crea-tionist".

"3. To believe in the existence of angels."

A major item for neuron cleansing. Angels/de-vils are the mythical creations of ancient civilizations, e.g. Hitt-ites, to explain/define natural events, contacts with their gods, big birds, sudden winds, protectors during the dark nights, etc. No "pretty/ug-ly wingy thingies" ever visited or talked to Mohammed, Jesus, Mary or Joseph or Joe Smith. Today we would classify angels as f–airies and "tin–ker be-lls". Modern de-vils are classified as the de-mons of the de-mented.

"4. To believe that all the heavenly books that were sent to the different prophets are true. However, apart from the Quran, all other books are not valid anymore."

Another major item to delete. There are no books written in the spirit state of Heaven (if there is one) just as there are no angels to write/publish/distribute them. The Koran, OT, NT etc. are simply books written by humans for humans.

Prophets were invented by ancient scribes typically to keep the un-educated masses in line. Today we call them for-tune tellers.

Prophecies are also invali-dated by the natural/God/Allah gifts of Free Will and Future.

"5. To believe that all the prophets are true. However, we are commanded to follow the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) alone."

Mohammed spent thirty days "fasting" (the Ramadan legend) in a hot cave before his first contact with Allah aka God etc. via a "pretty wingy thingy". Common sense demands a neuron deletion of #5. #5 is also the major source of Islamic vi-olence i.e. turning Mohammed's "fast, hunger-driven" hallu-cinations into horrible reality for unbelievers.
Walk these Five Steps and we guarantee a complete recovery from your Islamic ways!!!!

Unfortunately, there are not many Muslim commentators/readers on this blog so the "two-minute" cure is not getting to those who need it. If you have a Muslim friend, send him a copy and help save the world.

Analogous steps are available at your request for deprogramming the myths of Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Paganism .

These are my two cents on this religious forum. I took a step back a few years ago and put some serious thought into this matter, what I came up with was the fact that who am I to judge on who is right and who is wrong, I wouldn't be surprised that if your parents followed x religion you would most likely share the same Faith. So I changed my beliefs based on this alone. I believe in a god. The creator of us all and that we were all created the same. It's time to start using common sense its 2011. So my advise is respect everyone's beliefs and traditions. God created us to be different and to do what's right, protect and respect our earth and ourselves. My Faith is that we can all live in harmony one day. Peace

Maya, how little understanding you show. While Islam may mean submission to God, people who follow the other faiths you speak of are considered as non-believers by followers of Islam. To submit to God means they must follow the word of God, as written within the Koran and handed down from the prophet Mohammed. And since Christians and Jews do not follow the word as written in the Koran, they have not submitted to God (no matter how much they may argue that they do truly believe). In other words, in their faith, to submit to God you must follow the word of God as written in the Koran. Only Islam follows the Koran. Hence Islam is the only true religon, it is the one all the true faithful must follow, and all other religons are heretical shams to be converted or destroyed.

Interesting comment. I am very aware of the contempt that Muslims have for other faiths, and those who lived within their midst suffered greatly. Jews were restricted by profession, where they could live, how high their house could be, whether or not they could pass a Muslim on the street, educate their young in their culture or worship in a synagogue. After the creation of the State of Israel, the Arab states made their lives hell.

People have conveniently forgotten how difficult it was to get out of these prison states. Syria and Libya forced their jews to give up homes and businesses without selling and had to turn over their bank accounts to the state. The Presidential palace in Cairo and a lot of the embassies were confiscated Jewish estates!!

Non-Muslims were beneath their consideration and only survived on the good will (of the moment) of any current ruler. I find it hard to care about their 'alienation' here in America, because they don't know what it is like to suffer under their own heel.

Muslim alienation is a fantasy created by media and some right wing Christian fanatics. There are ulterior political and religious biases and motives at work here. There are thousands of Doctors, Lawyers, scientists, money managers on wall street, and thousands of professionals and businessman and business owners and reporters and just everyday normal Americans who are of Muslim faith. It is not only stupid but also crazy to lump them all up with a few Muslims extremists alienated in this country. In fact we have more alienated crazies in this country who are not Muslims but of other faiths including Christianity.

It is unfortunate that there may be a Muslim alienation and mistrust. But one must look at the track record. Muslims populations in France, in the UK, and even in a country like Norway have brought violence to liberal societies. What did these countries do to upset the Muslims that were welcomed?

In London & in Scotland, 2nd generation Pakistanis went jehadi. In fact, in England, Muslim clerics give public hate speeches against Western values and freedoms... this is all in the name of the British love for the Freedom of Speech.

This is the same situation in India, Russia, Australia (Indonesian Muslims), and even China. The only exception is the massacre of Muslims in Serbia.

What is the world supposed to think? The problem is, that adherents of the Islamic faith, put religion above all else. That in itself would be fine, but unfortunately, many of the strict adherents will spill blood in this day & age for the sake of getting their way, and forcing other people to think their way.

Islam is not a peaceful religion by any means. The onus is certainly on the moderates of Islam to convince their extremists to lead peaceful lives.

There is another factor, Islam is the fastest growing religion – a religion that really cannot get along with other religions.

    March 29, 2011 at 11:16 pm |
    • tonyl

Your comments states and make claims and draws assumptions about how bad is the religion of Islam and how bad are the Muslims, But then you also state that Islam is the fastest growing religion. Why do so many people wish to accept and convert to Islam, if it is so bad? Is it the human nature to accept bad things for their lives? Or is it that you stated most of the untruths in your comments about Islam? Maye you need to actually learn about all the faiths of the world before making assumptions. Sorry for being blunt.

      March 29, 2011 at 11:38 pm |
    • Noodle

@ TonyL It is the fastest growing religion due to birth rate. People are being "born into" islam at a faster rate than other religions. It is not due to people converting to Islam. This is a plank that is urged in some of the more radical areas of islam. Grow the religion through birth rate. The coversion rate for people converting to Christianity is 4 times that of Islam. So by your thesis...Christianity appears to be the more enticing of the religions, as 4x the number of people choose Christianity over Islam. Fact.

      March 29, 2011 at 11:54 pm |
    • Truthseeker

@tonyl, islam is the "fastest growing religion" (which is fact not even true) because muslims breed like rabbits. The number of people converting to islam and the number leaving islam is about the same, according to a recent Pew study. The main reason for islam's gowth is a high birthrate. Case closed.
