Pot shop opens near Michigan church, school
From CNN affiliate WEYI.
A medical marijuana dispensary moves in across the street from a Catholic Church and school in Owosso.
Now city council is considering a new ordinance that would make this illegal.
NBC25 talked to the business owner who wants to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation, and some parishioners about what should be done to resolve the controversy.
On M-21 in Owosso you'll find a place where kids go to school and across the street a place to find medical marijuana.Read the full story about the pot shop controversy at ConnectMidMichigan.com

can i smoke medical marijauna around my kids that are under 18 and not get in trouble i live in mi
You would think the clergy of that church would be over encouraging the patrons of the dispensary to come over to confession where they can be forgiven for their weekly sins, just like the churchs members who come every week to be forgiven for their lustfilled minds, gambling(bingo, etc)addictions, and beer drunkin episodes. Seems the church thinks all those things are exceptable, but dont smoke weed you'll go to HELL. As fair as children go, educate them that marijuana is know medicine and that the dispensaries are just like the Rite Aid pharmacy down the road. I am a patient/caregiver in Mich. and I have 2 children under 13. I have educated my children about med. marijuana and why it is now here. My children understand and way happier with the dad they have on pot than the dad they had on pain killers. Marijuana has greatly reduced my need for pain medication and greatly increased my quality of life. My family will contest to this. Come on people its 2011, lets quit letting some politcians from the 50's and 60's control how we live today, its time for pot prohibition to go by the wayside.
If someone says that someone who believes on Christ and smokes weed will go to Hell, they are NOT a Christian.
If someone says that smoking weed is no big deal, they don't know the Bible.
I smoked weed daily for years, so shaddup.
And maybe you'll be more nostalgic for the 50s way of life when your wife divorces you so she can "find herself".
Hmmm, is it possible we have some "reefer" withdrawal in these comments?
But, presumably, there aren't such restrictions on toxic (unlike cannabis) & addictive (unlike cannabis) products such as alcohol & tobacco... maybe there are such restrictions in some places, but it seems that selling dangerous products (in gas stations close to schools) is allowed. Cannabis is safe & effective & should therefore be legal; whether it's around children or not is not so important as the many benefits of cannabis (in this instance, medical benefits are the issue).
Oh my! I'm glad I grew up in the 50's-60's where they didn't give a crap about the children. We had a great time and never hurt anyone. Now I wonder what a kid thinks about all these percieved dangers. If people would get their heads out of a dark place they'd see that pot isn't a danger. The only reason kids want it is because it's illegal. This would all go away if it was legal and out in the open. It'd get real boring really fast. Problem is then they'd find something else. Hmmmmmm
What a sick comment; promotion of neglect is no joke. Indeed though, nations with legal cannabis have fewer users... the claim that legalising cannabis would encourage use of other drugs is false. The opposite effect is more likely: many people who would otherwise use dangerous drugs like alcohol or heroin would choose (safe & healthy) cannabis instead.
Toby, I agree with almost everything you say except for "many people who would otherwise use dangerous drugs like alcohol or heroin would choose (safe & healthy) cannabis instead."
I wouldnt consider smoking any plant matter "healthy", safer than tobacco or alcohol sure. But smoking anything is not considered "Healthy". A "Healthy" alternative would be to eat it (bake into food) or vaporize it.
What a huge non-issue. It's not like people can just wander over from the elementary school during lunch and K – 5th graders can pick up their pot, it's medicinal. Similarly, members of the congregation aren't likely to duck out during service to go get high. What's the big deal? Why are we so wound up and tight as a society? Let your hair down.
"what's the big deal"? The big deal is mass ignorance & stupidity about the many benefits of cannabis. The anti-cannabis propaganda is popular & has brainwashed many people with legal authority. The moral obligation is to end the war against illegal-drug users, for the sake of truth-based ethics.
Seems like a perfect fit. The only way I'd ever believe in talking snakes, sky fairies and virgin births, would be if I was high.
Any sort of anything that can make me not in my 'normal' or 'right' state of mind scares me. I believe I should always be in control of my mind and I shouldn't be under the influence of anything that may make me make a regrettable decision. That goes with alcohol, I don't drink for mainly that reason. It just scares me. Anytime I hear about someone 'getting high' or doing this drug or that I truly get nauseous in my stomach and I feel sick. Only once have I ever been under the influence of anything and that was anastesia (totally spelled that wrong I know) from a surgery I had, and believe me I was petrified and trying to find anyway around it so I won't have to have a surgery specifically for that reason. So the thought of a shop selling any sort of marijuana, whether it's medical or not I don't really care, by a school scares the living daylights out of me. Forget about it being by a church, it's the school it's by that worries me.
but i mean sure... allow a pharmacy to sell its precription killers and a corner store to sell tobacco and alcohol across the street...that's no problem?
WAKE UP PEOPLE
The reason marijuana is a prescription drug and restricted to those who need to deal with pain but also need to be reminded by their doctors/pharmacists of the following potential side effects:
Diminished short-term memory
Loss of concentration and coordination
Increased risk of accidents
Loss of motivation
Increased heart rate
Anxiety, panic attacks, and paranoia
Damage to the respiratory, reproductive, and immune systems
Increased risk of cancer
From: the Center For Disease Control et al: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00001143.htm and also http://www.acde.org/common/Marijana.htm
Because of these potential side effects, one assumes federal, state and local officials restrict medical use of marijuana to the home and away from schools.
The feds don't restrict anything about marijuana, they just ban it outright and refuse to acknowledge the medical uses of it.
Feds fail again.
And you believe what the government tells you? haha Zero DEATHS. walk on dude...
And as for coffee, which has the same list of potential side effects which affect neurotic individuals? Drinking too much coffee causes death... using too much cannabis causes unpleasant feelings. Emphasising the potential harms of cannabis is important but to characterise cannabis with those is misleading. Cannabis prevents cancer; the cannabinoids induce cell death of damaged cells & promote blood flow positively.
"Loss of motivation".... actually, "increased creativity & motivation" is the common side effects of sativa strains. This 'lazy' side effect claim is classic reefer madness propaganda; creativity may encourage someone to see what is wrong with Western culture, yes, and they might want to participate in something else without an appropriate avenue... that could result in apparent laziness, but a reduction of laziness is also common with cannabis. Some strains are, rightfully, used to prevent ADD.
@ PAT,,,,ummmm what? puffpuff PASS
hmm...does it really matter. it's not after church I'm gonna smoke some cannabis plus for some people it helps. Even the damage to the body after using it takes longer than tobacco. I
site your sources please....I have some that contradict those statements
When is reefer madness going to end!?
Open up a satanic place if they shut down the dispensary.
you could move the church. :-}
Have the parishioners tried not caring? That typically solves most non-problem problems.
I would like to know how many of these church going christians drink wine nightly, take ambien or tylenol or right before this interview went to a pharmacy to pick up their prescriptions??
Christians are subject to believe alcohol and tobacco are the way to salvation, cannabis is the devils potion... hypocrites.
I think the priest needs to have a long chat with each of the children about the danger of drugs. Preferably alone in his office with the door closed.
Close down the church.
Walgreens would get no resistance from the church or school moving in across the street. It feeds addicts including school children junk. harmful drugs like adderrall and prozak. Terrible drugs aimed at our children as well as aimed at ignorant parents. This country has no shortage of them either. A liquor store would have no problems moving in either. It is nearsightedness and senseless pandemonium spread from the Nixon era. What a wonderful role model he turned out to be. Stop believing in your lies. Stop spreading the lies to our children. You insufferable brain-washed idiots will all rot in hell.
Christians are not to blame. Idiots are to blame. Idiots come in all races and religions. Marijuana is not for everyone. It is not prescribed to children. It is a natural way to treat a vast number of ailments from minor depression to the physical traumas of cancer. It ironically also treats addiction to pills. You can grow it yourself. Treat yourself. Take care of your own ailments... Not tthe type of drug that pharmaceutical companies can make billions off of. The money being spent to keep you ignorant is unnecessary. You are already so stupid... why don't you gather the men who run this legitimate business and stone them.
