Law expert explains Sharia and Islam

CNN's Soledad O'Brien sits down with Harvard Law professor Noah Feldman, who describes the basics of Sharia law and the difference between Islam and Sharia law. O’Brien chronicles the dramatic fight over the construction of a mosque in the heart of the Bible belt on “Unwelcome: The Muslims Next Door,” airing at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. ET April 2 on CNN.

    Read all these posts and regardless of what religion you belong to, think about what they are saying here. I feel that the only true religion is the one that believes we had a creator and that that creator made everything, flowers, trees, different kinds of each including, aimals and humans and the skin color of each. now I choose the Bible and I do so because it is the oldest book and has lasted thru many years and it tells us to follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. It tells us 10 commaments that if followed by all we would have a beautiful world. however it is a book that tells us to love one another, do not kill and that God will judge us not man. man is not able to direct his own feet, now look at just some of the proof. Man has ruled the world since man was put here and look at the mess we are in and continue to be in and getting worse, so the book was right, if we had followed it and loved our neighbor like our selves, the world would be a happier place for all, do not kill!! speaks for its self so that is just a small part of my reason for kmowing that to me the Bible is the real truth, read it and you too can find out what is about to take place and things that have already happened. even tho some say "it was written by men so it could not be true" well it was written thousands of years ago still the same and many of those thing written in it have already come to pass in our day so explain to me, if it was not inspired writings how did those men know thousands of years ago what would be taking place today?? I love the Bible, try it some time, and believe it all the time.

      please read buddhism and hinduism. these are much older than bible. hindoos bhagavad gita, which is 5000 years old and contains messages of lord krishna, supreme personality of godhead, who created this world and other things you mentioned. this book gives you much deeper knowledge and spiritual awakening, which no other religious books give. buddhism emphasize some aspects of bhagavat gita. christianity contains 20% of bhagavad gita, islam contains only 10% of bhagavad gita's message. communism and other political religions contan only 5% of gita's message. later mentioned religions are some kind of political religions instead of true god given religions.

    Dear Noah Feldman,
    You say sharia does not apply to nonbelievers.

    Are you really this uneducated and ignorant?
    How can somebody like you be a Harvard Law professor? You are a disgrace to Harvard, to the US and to humanity.

    islam religion is a political religion like communism. islam does not have a place in modern world. god-consciousness in islam for political power. christianity was the same in the beginning under jewish rule but changed considerably towards peace, islam is going backward. christianity and judaism modified their religions being influenced by buddhism and hinduism. islam in the middle east lacks this influence to suite as an eternal religion. islam is more like a political religion like communism.

    Many scholars believe that the Nation Of Islam is descended also from Abraham through his first-born son Ishmael.

    Gen. 21:17 God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. 18 Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”

    Throughout history we see that the descendants of the two brothers, Isaac and Ishmael have been always been at war. I believe it is a shame that their descendants understand so little about each other. It seems they never will and will continue to try and eradicate each other. It is an affront to God.

    Those people of each group who speak and act out against the other, the Muslim, the Jew, and the Christian, are not following their own Laws which each believe are given to them by God. The same God who cursed Cain for his murder of Abel. How much more will each group be cursed for the murders they have committed?

      In one of the meetings on TV programes an Islamic scholar was asked why mankind is so violent and all those killings ?

      He simply answered because all mankind had derived from a criminal that had killed his brother,meaning that all mankind derived from the son of Adam named as Cain who killed Abel who had not performed any attack or even self defense;

      The First Murder*
      [5:27] Recite for them the true history of Adam's two sons. They made an offering, and it was accepted from one of them, but not from the other. He said, "I will surely kill you." He said, "GOD accepts only from the righteous.

      [5:28] "If you extend your hand to kill me, I am not extending my hand to kill you. For I reverence GOD, Lord of the universe.

      [5:29] "I want you, not me, to bear my sin and your sin, then you end up with the dwellers of Hell. Such is the requital for the transgressors."

      [5:30] His ego provoked him into killing his brother. He killed him, and ended up with the losers.

      you may be a descendant of the evil Cain, who murdered his brother, but I am a descendant of the third son, Seth. He was righteous in the eyes of God.

      To the point, The decendants of Ishmael have never gotten along with the descendants of Isaac, nor will they ever. It was prohesied by the angel that the house of Ishmael would be as a wild donkey of a man, stubborn and unruly:

      12"He will be a wild donkey of a man,
      His hand will be against everyone,
      And everyone's hand will be against him;
      And he will live to the east of all his brothers."

      It appears as though this prophecy has come true.

      There is no doubt that the Lord God loved Ishmael and has blessed him because of who his father was, but I wonder if the hate that ishmaels descendants felt for Isaacs descendants is what is driving this entire problem. As a person of the west, what we see from the behavior of the muslim world at large is hatred that is being poured out on everyone that is not muslim, even other muslims. Another thing of note, is that the muslims that do not feel hatred towards others are as silent as a sheep before the shears. There is no outcry from the muslim people donouncing the rampant murder that the radical muslims are delivering to everyone, including other muslims. Are you people that afraid of them that you cannot speak against it?

    I personally think Islam is a violent religion. I come from Bangladesh, a country with a Muslim majority. Trust me when I say that Muslims don't treat the Hindu minority the same way thay treat each other and I put that in the nicest way possible. It seems to me that Muslims have problems with people of other faiths whether it be Christianity, Hinduism, or Judaism and that doesn't surprise me at all.

    About Atheists;
    As understand from the oxford English English that the word means non-believer,disbeliever.unbeliever,sceptic.doubter,doubting.Thomas,agnostic,nihilist.
    Well seem as those are not specifically being towards Religion only but towards all that goes on in life and life it self !
    Not having faith or trust is a problem and blindly giving a faith and trust is another problem !

    Was informed that N.Korea system is an atheist system and for that they are more advanced than religious systems !
    Just heard on the news that N.Korea 2012 will declure her self A Super Power ! And that they are annually visiting as a pilgrimage the Idol of their deceased ex President offering flowers,for they had considered him their eternal President !
    Soon they will have the Son Idol to visit, after that all they need a holy ghost !
    Seeing that atheist system means you become to worship idols such as those (men of ideologies,political parties or even movie stars or football teams) those get of you  all love and attention rather more than God !

    In such though could those who worship and fear men and ideologies more than God like the Mafia or Similar Gangs be considered as atheists for they have God Fathers and War Princes to fear more than God ! Or is it that no one fear God any longer ? Is it in disbelief or in belief such as those who think God is all about love and would not punish while others think they have been saved by having their Prophet sacrificed as a sin taker and that no matter what they do today they are sure to go to Paradise only because they think there is no place for Hell for it does not exist nor punishment exist ? Forgot to ask them whether for all or them only or for other faiths as well ? Then if the other faiths have paradise and hell or only hell because all were wrong not accepting their named son or the 3in1 formula ! ? For they have made idols that are considered holy as well as many other faiths who have made for them selves live and dead idols to worship than God or worship them beside God or assigning them as God's partners that are feared by them maybe even more than God ! ? It is those who are killing,corrupting the earth and the sea !?

    Now how could atheists and disbelievers to become to believe in such teachings and practices over the what the creator been calling upon us to believe !?

    If i thought to ask what is needed to be seen for man to believe in God ? And if need an individual to see it or needs the world to see it with him for him to become to believe in the unseen ?  And if need to see it while fully awake or while you are fast asleep ?

    Many do get all the signs and warnings in their asleep in their dreams !
    For that they have to go to bed in ablution state and no alcohol then pray asking God to be able to see the truth and might you one day see some thing if kept on trying !!
    God only answers those who call upon him wanting him and his guidance but might not to those who remember to call upon him only when they are in trouble and when they are saved they fail to remember him and go back to what they used to do before then rather than to do what should have to be done in return !
    What is happening to mankind and am one of them that as well not perfect or trying hard to be as perfect as should be as a follower of the Quran on the faith of Abraham and the path of Muhammed (SAW)to both... My God help and guide me and who ever wishes before death and after death and on the judgment day.  Ameen

    If Islam is a religion, why does it function like a criminal organization that uses God as justification for perpetrating atrocities on those who are not members of the organization? For examples: like criminal gamgs, its leaders (imams and mullahs) order the killing of anyone who leaves or tries to leave the organization; the leaders issue contracts (fatwahs) to murder anyone who says, writes, or does anything that they do not like; members (Muslims) of the organization resort to threats, harassment, intimidation, kidnapping, violence, terrorism, and murder to get what they want; they extract protection money (jizya) from non-Muslims to avoid being murdered. If a member of the Mafia wrote that its criminal activities were based on orders from a god, would it be recognized as a religion? Note that although the Koran refers to non-Muslims as sub-human and the violest of creatures, last century with over a billion Muslims in the world, not one invented, discovered, created, or did anything to benefit humanity. All of civilizations advances were based on contributions by Christians, Jews, Atheists, and others - all of whom Muslims smear as "the villest of creatures," who they must kill.

      John Monkton.

      You are right about things about gangsters acts...but that is not for all since many Muslims are on the faith of Abraham and the path of Muhammed (SAW)....and do not follow other than the Quran and the Sunnah directly not taking Immams or Mulah as many others who left the words of God and followed the words of men,making them as holy as prophets....am a Muslim and still fear those who follow such grouping which I feel totally wrong and taking us back to stone age but have no word on that and saying it might endanger my life and the lives of any who would say the same...we disapprove same but have no word on it and safety found in silence...
      But what ever is happening and gave such results are the global wrong politics has generated and complicated same further
      And worse....beside what ever your people are doing of pure hearted assistance to the needy in such areas is only rewarded by God and should not expect it from people...we all do good expecting our reward from God and not from his creatures...thank you...

Is dat an abolition? i said NO. Then what's ur sharia today? socialism sharia. D SHARIAH(LAW) OF MEN is ur fear not muslims sharia. we follow d sharia of moses. Law of ALLAH to mankind. Keep ur law & we'll keep ours. Read ur bible carefully.may Allah rewards u unseizeably(muneef).

    [7:157] "(4) follow the messenger, the gentile prophet (Muhammad), whom they find written in their Torah and Gospel. He exhorts them to be righteous, enjoins them from evil, allows for them all good food, and prohibits that which is bad, and unloads the burdens and the shackles imposed upon them. Those who believe in him, respect him, support him, and follow the light that came with him are the successful ones."

    [7:158] Say, "O people, I am GOD's messenger to all of you. To Him belongs the sovereignty of the heavens and the earth. There is no god except He. He controls life and death." Therefore, you shall believe in GOD and His messenger, the gentile prophet, who believes in GOD and His words. Follow him, that you may be guided.

    Sharia Law is a fake. It is the same thing as Hitlers "Final Solution"

    April 15, 2011 at 6:06 pm |
    • Muneef

      Which of the Sharia is fake you meant;
      -the Islamic sharia.
      -the Christian sharia.
      -the Jewish sharia.
      Since as per the Quran God has given each their sharia..

      The Law of Equivalence
      [5:45] And we decreed for them in it that: the life for the life, the eye for the eye, the nose for the nose, the ear for the ear, the tooth for the tooth, and an equivalent injury for any injury. If one forfeits what is due to him as a charity, it will atone for his sins. Those who do not rule in accordance with GOD's revelations are the unjust.

      The Gospel of Jesus: Guidance and Light
      [5:46] Subsequent to them, we sent Jesus, the son of Mary, confirming the previous scripture, the Torah. We gave him the Gospel, containing guidance and light, and confirming the previous scriptures, the Torah, and augmenting its guidance and light, and to enlighten the righteous.

      [5:47] The people of the Gospel shall rule in accordance with GOD's revelations therein. Those who do not rule in accordance with GOD's revelations are the wicked.

      Quran: The Ultimate Reference
      [5:48] Then we revealed to you this scripture, truthfully, confirming previous scriptures, and superseding them. You shall rule among them in accordance with GOD's revelations, and do not follow their wishes if they differ from the truth that came to you. For each of you, we have decreed laws and different rites. Had GOD willed, He could have made you one congregation. But He thus puts you to the test through the revelations He has given each of you. You shall compete in righteousness. To GOD is your final destiny – all of you – then He will inform you of everything you had disputed.

      [5:49] You shall rule among them in accordance with GOD's revelations to you. Do not follow their wishes, and beware lest they divert you from some of GOD's revelations to you. If they turn away, then know that GOD wills to punish them for some of their sins. Indeed, many people are wicked.

      [5:50] Is it the law of the days of ignorance that they seek to uphold? Whose law is better than GOD's for those who have attained certainty?

      Sharia meaning laws of God for each within the bibles and holy books...
      Each faith has it's own sharia to rule with their way of living....
      If you are a Jew then you have your own sharia laws.
      If you are a Christian then you have your own sharia laws.
      We as Muslims have our own sharia laws...
      Unless you mean that your fear is all been combined to rule the whole people of the books rather than each having his own?...

What have they contributed to science?But yes they have maximum number of kalashnikovs and are always ready to behead innocent people...Come on guys why are you so hellbent in not accepting the truth...Otherwise what makes everyone hate you so much..Ever thought about it??

    Every human has its rights to do anything with his or her own knowledge. As far I know my religion Islam does not oppose that. All mankind has given power to make their own judgment and decision and Islam does not force anyone to obey or to force anyone to become Muslim. Koran and hadis is knowledge and information with our power and knowledge we should understand the beauty of Islam and its logic behind it. True way to become Muslim if you willing to submission yourself to Allah and truly understand Islamic way of living.

    Interesting link to read leading to more interesting links;

    The second important differentiation is between the Shari`ah and Islamic schools of law (madhahib al-fiqh). The word shari`ah has developed negative connotations in its English usage because some people equate it solely with corporal punishments (which are applied in some countries in the name of the Islamic law, but which are usually and unfortunately applied to the weak and poor, not the rich or politically powerful). However, the word Shari`ah is used in the Quran only to mean a ‘revealed, heavenly path or way of life’ (Quran 5:48, 45:18). So, everything about Islam is Shari`ah. It is supposed to be the Islamic ‘way of life.’

    Though it doesn't speak much about "sharia" in particular, the book "Son of Hamas" gives a pretty detailed look into islam in general and how it governs the lives of those who follow it. Between that book and what I actually see happening in the real actual world (as opposed to the fabricated, PC world that we are supposed to believe we live in), I have to say that the so-called "religion of peace" is only practiced peacefully by those who really don't even practice it as it was intended to be practiced in the first place. We idiots in the west don't realize that it is so much more than a "religion"..it is a political, social, and economic "solution" to those who actually practice it. I'm sorry, but it's not crazy christians, jews, hindus, or buddhists who are constantly slaughtering their own people and others on such a large scale in the name of a so-called "god"...

    It is easy to be confused. Too many people speak without knowlege. Take adultery for example, Jews, Christians, and Muslims have rules about that.

    The Jewish law is the oldest - stone the woman to death - but I do not think they follow that on Long Island anymore

    Jesus said - Yes the law says we must stone the adulteress, let he among you who is without sin cast the first stone - in other words, we are not following that old law anymore

    Mohammed, he just copied the Jewish law

      The purpose for God giving us His Laws was to point out to us that we are sinners, who sinned and have violated His commands. We are incapable of following His commandments. Jesus was, is, and forever be the Lamb of God; God's perfect and spotless lamb, who died for our sins. God raised Him from the dead three days later as proof to us that God was satisfied by the sacrifice Jesus made on our behalf. We have been reconciled to God through the shed blood of Jesus Christ, my Savior and God. I no longer fear death or dying alone. I will spend eternity with my Jesus and God, my Father. God placed this desire in me to share the hope I have in Jesus. I no longer have to try to earn God's love and acceptance based by my actions. I know He unconditionally loves my even though I still sin. I've been forgiven and set free from the bondage of sin and man's religion. When God looks down upon me He sees the blood of His Only Son that covers and cleanses me of all my sin. Jesus came to restore our broken relationship with God and to give us all eternal life. Please place your trust in Him today.

    • Can You Hear Me Now

      Islam seems to be difficult for even its adherents to understand. Apparently the Koran is all about peace, but many Muslims see justifications for violence in it. Islam respects women, but only as long as they are made invisible by a veil and don't violate someone's twisted idea of honor (in which case they may be stoned or killed by some other violent means).

      I don't need to ask any questions to understand Islam. It's clearly a screwed up faith and I find it amusing that anyone could believe that it is divinely inspired when no one seems to be able to understand what it says.

      I especially love those Muslims who claim that, while the position of women isn't great in Islam, somehow Islam treats women better than what existed in their societies before its advent. Strangely, Christianity was introduced into some barbaric cultures (including the ancient cultures of northern Europe) and it was able, through the course of time, to eliminate those barbaric tendencies altogether, not just modify them a bit and incorporate them into the new culture, as has happened with Islam.

      It's also interesting to me that we have been asked to accept that Islam is a religion of peace when it has never been at peace with other cultures. Even its early spread throughout the Middle East and other regions was done by violence. Contrast that with Christianity, which truly was in its early years spread by peaceful means. In fact, it was an outlawed religion with no army and no formal administration, yet it was able to conquer the Roman Empire simply by the strenght of its word.

      I'm not religious, but I guess it shows you which of the 2 religions is truly the strongest and truly the religion of peace.

      Have read the quran and the history of it, and islam is the anti Christ and is the biggest and most successful heresy. Muslims should start reading and educating themselves and stop being in denial of what Islam really is, there ancestors culture, history and heritage were all destroyed by Islam.

    • OK:)

      @Can You Hear Me Now Christianity and Islam are both religions that originated in the middle-east and thus carry in themselves aspects of the culture, morals and tradition of their creators ,i.e. middle-easterners. The reinterpretation of Christianity by European tribes to fit their pagan culture (crosses, Sunday, Christmas, Easter and many more) gives you the initial universally accepted view of Christianity in Europe. If you look at the interpretation of Christianity in areas that are geographically closer to the middle-east like the Ethiopian orthodox church you will find that they closely resemble those of the qur'an such as the prohibition of pork and alcohol. The view of Christianity that you present is a European one that fits the cultures and traditions of the people who created it and will not work if forced on cultures that like the Europeans have their own unique view of the world, people of the middle-east have their own version of Christianity(They created it) and don't need a refurbished European version. Thank you!.

    Most people, including Western 'Experts', confuse Sharia Law with the Traditions of Individual countries. For example, the poster called mollyd above thinks there is a penalty for a young woman walking in public with a man who is neither her husband nor Brother. This is of course False, there is no penalty but there are local traditions in Muslim countries AND non-Muslim countries in the 3rd world against this. 'Experts' and normal people have to be know what is and what isn't Sharia before giving their opinions. To date, and since 9/11 when the entire western world suddenly became infested by experts, I have not heard one single expert opinion that was actually right – not one.

      Religion is for those who are unable to reason through facts and make up their own mind. Weakness is expressed through faith in organized religion...especially Islam.

      There is no expert opinion beacuse people like you are in denial and can not accept what is crytal clear about sharia, it does not require any expertise to understand sharia, sharia is what it is and it is the main root of Islam problems to co-exist with the rest of the world.

      I know one thing,the koran is agressive and unforgiving,it i believe is not the word of god.Israel stands alone and is the only democratic country in the middle east.Israel has never asked for western help,they get bombed every day and no one says anything.Israel should take things into there own hands and look after business.I remember one thing ref 911 the syrians were eating candy and celebrating,just like they did when a israeli family was murdered by by a pallistenian millitant.where is the koran justice there. we do not need any islamic belief here in canada or the usa..........tim
