Explainer: Islamic headscarves and France's new burqa ban

France's controversial ban on wearing Islamic veils such as burqas took effect Monday.

The ban pertains to the burqa, a full-body covering that includes a mesh window over the face, and the niqab, a full-face veil that leaves an opening only for the eyes.

The hijab, which covers the hair and neck but not the face, and the chador, which covers the body but not the face, apparently are not banned by the law.

Click through the gallery to see what the main types of Islamic headscarves look like - and to see what's banned and what's not under France's new law.

Adelina i have read the Gospels and the quran both. they have many similarities except for the fact that Christians believe in jesus as a god/son. muslims don't. muslims think of him as one of the very important prophets. just think about that. back to the scarfs issue, why don't they take the veils off of the nuns then. the muslim women who wear scarfs are protecting themselves from the male eye. the other muslim women who don't wear scarfs are scared of the world. and kathy why don't the nuns take their head coverings off. they should learn to live with their society.

Adelina, I really appreciate your recommendation...But do you really think that there is a Muslim who lives on earth that doesn't know and love Juses and Moses and all the other prophets God has sent to the humanity,God mentioned them a lot, they are almost in every page in Quran with all the details about their lifes.Thank you so much.

Frank Rizzo, ITA , you ended the story so beautifully.

For the Record, when you see a Muslim Women covering her face and full body she is NOT in Islamic Compliance, she is doing for her National Culture It's has nothing to do with the Islamic Religion

The ONLY Islamic Requirement of ALL Muslim Women beginning at the Age of Puberty, they Must All Cover the Head According to the Torah, the New Testament and finally the Koran. All women who are Sincerer and Obedient Followers of all of God's Holy Books regardless of Religion will Cover their Heads end of story.

Kathy you are right ... it's about culture and not religion ... so I wish that the day would come when people talk about burqa they won't mention Islamic religion but they say Arab culture many many years before muslim's prophet ( my prophet) because religions and god's messengers (Muhammed , Jesus ,Moses ) dosen't follow nations but it's the nations that follows religions and God's prophts.

Bronzeali, if you acknowledge Jesus as God's Messenger and Prophet, why don't you read the Gospels in the Bible? God's Word cannot be changed by humans. And even if you think it did, why don't you just read the books on Jesus( Gospels) written by His eyewitnesses in order to fully discover what He said and what He did. I would. You should read the Bible to get to know Him.

The French don't want these people blocking traffic for their prayers. The French are waking up to the fact that this multicultural bs doesn't work.

The initial reason or logic in muslims wearting covering to cover their face no longer exists. It was initiated for their culture many, many years ago. If they chose to live in another culture now, blending in would be the right choice. There is a lot of brainwashing and cutlural expectations that in this case were established by men. A culture where men are seen as superior and in charge. It is time for cultures to change with the times as some want to live in the past. Your location should determine a dress code that is exceptable to all. In this case i believe that some immigrants are to demanding when entering a new country, wanting the best of two worlds. This is not smart as it offends the original culture. I think this ban was made due to the fact that our culture requires people to be visible, as passport, law and legal issues as well. some feel it is deceptive and hiding out, and equivilant to wearing a mask. It is impersonal to most.
