Billboard battle over Judgment Day

(CNN) - We've told you about the caravan of RVs touring the country to warn people about the end of the world, which they say will begin on May 21.

Now, the American Atheists are mounting a counter-campaign.

The group has posted a billboard in Oakland, California - home to Family Radio, which is spreading the "awesome news" that Judgment Day is near - declaring that such messages are "nonsense."

"The Rapture: You KNOW it's Nonsense," the American Atheists' billboard announces. "2000 Years of 'Any Day Now.'"

The billboard - which cost $27,000, according to the group's website - invites passers-by to "Learn the Truth" at the group's "Rapture Party" on May 21-22 in Oakland.

The atheists also plan to hold parties in Houston, Texas, and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the website says.

"This is how religion hurts people, one of the many ways religion hurts people," American Atheists President David Silverman told CNN Oakland, California, affiliate KGO.

"Our hope is that those who are not suckered in will learn from the people who are."

I notice that they don't post anti-Zeus, anti-Thor, anti-Zarathustra billboards, while they do for Jesus. Here's why: As Gamaliel said in Acts 5 "have nothing to do with these men (Peter and friends). If what they are doing is from man, it will destroy itself. If it is from God, you cannot destroy it without fighting God himself." That's what organized atheists are doing, fighting God. Let's us believers sit back and watch.

Organized atheists are standing up for our rights just as you would claim to do. Show us people trying to change public policy based on any of the gods you list and I’ll show you the same discussion applied to those gods. Xtianity, Isl @m, Jud @aism, all make demonstrably false claims which are used to try to implement laws and policy which infringe on the rights of others. If someone decided to taunt that I wasn’t going to Valhalla or that Dionysus Zeus should be taught as competing theories in school, they would deserve the same opposition which the big three receive.
We’re fighting willful ignorance that tries to disguise itself as concrete knowledge. If there is a god, all he has to do is show his face, we’d gladly fight him but until then we just have to deal with those claiming to represent him.

@BR ".....laws and policy which infringe on the rights of others." With or without an idea of God, you'll need laws. And the ones that you'll need will look an awful lot like the Ten Commandments. These will keep YOU from infringing on others' rights. Or is slander, adultery, theft, murder, etc. okay with atheists?

      April 26, 2011 at 5:21 pm |
    • BR

@brad – You conveniently neglect to acknowledge the "infringe on the rights of others" bit. Or is a baseless conjecture, and bald assertion in an attempt to supplant science OK with theists?

You're quick to deviate from the big 10 to include slander and adultery. Both are bad and destructive behavior. One is illegal upon burden of proof, the other is typically destructive without specifically being illegal (at least in the west) and neither are mentioned in the 10 commandments. There are innumerable laws on the books throughout America and the world, and in the scheme of things Mo’s big 10 get you only two which are actual laws. The rest are just thought crimes and prescribed control from an unproven authority.

Apparently, Jesus didn't exist or is the corpse of a hippy who's been dead for 2000 years. Either way, Jesus still draws crowds, especially the atheists. While Christians await the return of Jesus, the atheists can't get him to leave.

What gives man the authority to decide who is more holy than the next guy? shouldn't that be God's decision?

Why are the Christians always on the defensive, is there any evidence that God does NOT exist? And anyway, post-modernism reasoning states that everyone is right, regardless. how can an atheist keep up with current atheistic thinking and say Christianity is wrong?

    April 26, 2011 at 2:31 pm |
    • BR

False equivalency...The term atheist only refers to one specific thing. Lack of belief in any deity. That's it. CAN an atheist be a post-modernist? Sure, but personally I don't know a single atheist who espouses post-modernism.

Post-modernism can be interesting at times, but "what is reality?" arguments get old and don't quite make it down to the ground of practical discussion.

Revelation 6: 15 -17 (Part of the Rapture legend):

"Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free, hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. 16 They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us[f] from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day of their[g] wrath has come, and who can withstand it?”

And what some very educated fellows had to say about the Book of Revelation:

"Nineteenth-century agnostic Robert G. Ingersoll branded Revelation "the insanest of all books".[30] Thomas Jefferson omitted it along with most of the Biblical canon, from the Jefferson Bible, and wrote that at one time, he "considered it as merely the ravings of a maniac, no more worthy nor capable of explanation than the incoherences of our own nightly dreams." [31]

Martin Luther "found it an offensive piece of work" and John Calvin "had grave doubts about its value."[32]

The rapture is not in the Bible. Jesus comes back to earth and we ALL meet him in our spiritual bodies, no longer in human flesh. Also, I've already told you the answer to your favorite question knocking the truth in the Book of Revelation being that Ingersoll, Jefferson, Luther and Calvin lived and died in a generation that didn’t apply to this end generation (your generation Reality), therefore, they wouldn’t comprehend Jesus' truth in the book of Revelation, which means to reveal. How could we reveal truth about computers, microwave ovens, CD players and CDs to those that lived in that time? They'd have grave doubts about the electronics we take for granted today.

SMILE, I'm sure you'll continue posting your nonsense on every article on this site you can.

Allah claims to be the Truth (S.20, A.114), but Allah lies. Jesus Christ, the Word of God (Revelation 19:13), is the Truth (John 1:1, 14; 14:6). This Word (Hebrews 4:12-13) reveals that false gods, idols, involve demons (Leviticus 17:7; Deuteronomy 32:17; 2 Chronicles 11:15; Psalm 106:37; 1 Corinthians 10:20-21; Revelation 9:20). Thus, Allah is a demon, or demons, and Muhammad was a prophet of a demon (or demons).
