Billboard battle over Judgment Day

(CNN) - We've told you about the caravan of RVs touring the country to warn people about the end of the world, which they say will begin on May 21.

Now, the American Atheists are mounting a counter-campaign.

The group has posted a billboard in Oakland, California - home to Family Radio, which is spreading the "awesome news" that Judgment Day is near - declaring that such messages are "nonsense."

"The Rapture: You KNOW it's Nonsense," the American Atheists' billboard announces. "2000 Years of 'Any Day Now.'"

The billboard - which cost $27,000, according to the group's website - invites passers-by to "Learn the Truth" at the group's "Rapture Party" on May 21-22 in Oakland.

The atheists also plan to hold parties in Houston, Texas, and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the website says.

"This is how religion hurts people, one of the many ways religion hurts people," American Atheists President David Silverman told CNN Oakland, California, affiliate KGO.

"Our hope is that those who are not suckered in will learn from the people who are."

So these self proclaimed bible experts are saying they know the exact date.

The bible specificity and unambiguously says that nobody knows the exact date. Even an agnostic knows that much.

these people are full of it.

Specifying an exact date is no more silly than believing it generally. It just exposes the belief to inevitable disproof. At least these simpletons had the courage to put it out there.

So where does the easter bunny and santa come from?
I remember now, that dude that they tacked up on popsicle sticks name was actually santa and they stuck the end of the cross in the hole of a bunny rabbit's burrow. It all makes sence now.

To all of you calling the atheists "extremists" for putting a billboard: I see plenty of pro-Christianity signs, does that make them extremelists, also? Many churches cost millions of dollar of build. Is that not a waste of money? To me, your real extremist beliefs (not to mention hypocrisy) relies in the fact that Christians across this country are trying to deny the rights they hold so dearly (because they're "oppressed") to atheists, muslims, immigrants, gays, etc.

Great! Now people are going to start blaming all Christians for the stupidity of a few again. Everyone, please know that most "true" believing Christians, don't agree with the craziness others try to push as biblical. Bottom line, scripture says this...

"But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone." Matthew 24:36

    April 25, 2011 at 3:30 pm |
    • Manma DeReli Gon

Yes, good point. Except, Matthew did NOT write it, it was written by someone else a couple hundred years later. Please tell me you are aware of this.

Why not? Christians blame all Muslims for the stupidity of a few all the time.

      @JJ
you said, ""But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone." Matthew 24:36"
Do u realize that this statement can never be wrong?? it is not a good idea to believe in statements that can never be wrong. they are called barnum statements and are often employed by psychics to always seem to be correct.
the pastor who claimed that the world will end on may 21 used a barnum statement too. he said, 'there is a high probability that the world will end on may 21'. its easy to see that this statement will always be true. if the world ends on may 21, he's right. if the world doesn't end on may 21 (which is the most likely case), he is still right because he said high probability! quite easy to see through him don't u think? and its easy for u and me to reject the pastors claim based on this reasoning.
however i think that the biggest barnum statement made is the one u quoted from matthew. do u see why it is a barnum statement? if Jesus comes back, he's right. If Jesus never comes back, he's still right cause he said that no one will know when he will come back! so his followers will keep waiting forever, and his statement will still hold true even after all of humanity ceases to exist. Greatest barnum statement EVER!
But it puzzles me as to why u and other christians do not reject this statement as see it for what it is. It must be BLIND FAITH (aka no reason/logic needed)!

Don't worry, the "rapture" isn't EVER gonna happen because the Bible is obviously fictional. Now run along and enjoy your life!

Ok, so the Bible is fiction right??? Give me proof that it is fiction and I will show you that it isn't... Are you by any chance God to tell me or anyone else that it is fiction??? I don't think so... The Bible says that Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen... I'm pretty sure that you "hope" to have something nice happen to someone you love or anything else, but why should you hope??? You obviously don't believe in hope, because hope is what makes faith possible... So before you say something as STUPID as what you did, think twice, because you don't know anything about my God to be saying something so ignorant and idiotic.... He doesn't punish anyone, so don't try to argue why bad things happen on Earth... He didn't create us to become sinners, but yet, being wise, like yourself, we decided to CHOOSE the sinful ways, therefore all hell broke loose... He had His people wait for Jesus to come because He decides what time would have been best, therefore, the suffering that His people had were caused solely because of their disobedience... you should try reading the Bible to figure out what it says, because after all, you guys are so "smart" to judge yet so foolish when your judgements are incorrect...
Being a Christian, I understand what it's like to be given a bad name because of people who claim that they are Christians, yet, they are stupid enough to go against God's word and be such heretics... So atheists, take your anger out on these types of people because as far as I'm concerned, the real Christians would never, and I repeat, NEVER say things so stupid and nevertheless false as what these heretics have said... The Bible clearly tells us that nobody knows the time, only God knows.
With that being said, YOU run along and enjoy your "life"...

      April 25, 2011 at 3:40 pm |
    • Manma DeReli Gon

Do you even know who commissioned the bible to be written, and why? Before you take it as truth, find out who wrote it. The difference between Atheists and Religion is that Atheist mostly came to their conclusion individually by reflection and applying reason. The religious were led by their noses but a book and preachers who had something to gain.

      April 25, 2011 at 3:45 pm |
    • Barter_Town

Well, I HAVE read the Bible. Why do you think I'm an atheist? The whole book is nonsense.

Proof that the Bible is fictional? Adam and Eve, a worldwide flood, a man living for days inside the stomach of a very large fish, a talking donkey, a talking snake, giants, unicorns, a god that is petty and jealous... to name a few. Not to mention the very poor and downright silly teachings of Jesus.

Too much to mention here, really.

      April 25, 2011 at 3:56 pm |
    • fimeilleur

      @ theTruth,

The "virgin birth" is currently being re-translated (by CHRISTIANS) to the more acceptable "maiden" birth in the newest version of the Buy bull. So even your "educated theological scholars" can't agree (13 versions of the Bible on bible(dot)com... in English alone... neither one agrees with another but they are all "true")

      April 25, 2011 at 4:03 pm |
    • The Truth

at least i have something holy to quote and not senseless reflections that will give you no answers my friend... I live by faith and not by sight, maybe you should try to believe in something, because faith in my God, the one and only God, has brought the best in everyone... Just because some ruthless and heretic preachers may use His word for personal gain, that does not mean that we all do... some of us live what we preach.... and besides, if there is nothing to believed, why are so many atheists passionate about having other people believe in nothing... in other words, you shouldn't be saying anything since you guys are also trying to spread the "gospel" of atheism...

      April 25, 2011 at 9:24 pm |
    • LetsThink123

      @The Truth
The problem is that what u perceive as god is just an emotional state that makes u feel good and happy and calm and content with your life. However, that doesn't mean that it is TRUE! And on top of that, others don't feel the same way as u. You accept concepts in the bible with NO evidence and despite the fact that the bible contradicts facts.
If u think about adam and eve logically, it is a myth (incest to produce offspring which would be prone to retardation, god making the stars after our sun which is backwards, god making land animals before animals who could aviate which is also backwards).
Then you've got noah's ark which is also, when thought about logically, a myth as well. just ask yourself these simple questions and think about it: How can noah build such a large cruiseliner to hold ALL the animals of the earth with primitive tools? How can noah accommodate a lion and a zebra on the same ship without the lion having his zebra for lunch? How can noah (who thought that where he lived in his little part of the world was actually the entire world) save the indian bengali tigers, australian kangaroo, polar bears, penguins that he doesn't even know exist because he's a primitive man???? IF noah did bring polar bears and penguins onto his ship, did he build a special refrigerator to keep them from dying (cause u know they cant survive in warm climates). If this supposed flood did occur, why can't scientists find a plethora of fossils from that point in time of all the dead animals? did god use special water in the flood that dissolved all the bones of the animals? In order to flood the whole planet, you would need 3 times the amount of water that already exists on this planet, and you would essentially destroy the planet. And where did all that extra water go? It just disappeared or evaporated??
You see, other people who don't believe in your god (lets call them atheists to your god) actually ASK these questions and THINK about it. To them these myths don't add up to reality and they reject your god.
U personally prefer to ignore all these questions and not try to come up with a sensible answer to them. u prefer to live ur life ignoring facts so that your god can still be real. That is irrational and delusional -> But by all means do it! Just don't expect thinking people to do the same.

Good for you guys. As it says in the Bible "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father." so on this billboard, the Athiests actually have it right. In the end (we all have an end you know) someone will be wrong and someone right. If the athiests are right...no harm, no foul, if the Christians are right...oops to the non-believers...

I'm agnostic, but I have many Christian friends who have incredible moral standing and seem to be very happy with life. They don't try to convert me, and I don't try and convert them, because there is simply nothing good to come from it. There are, however, those who are much too outspoken about their religion. I wonder, if it weren't for politics, race, and religion, what would we find to hate and belittle eachother over? No religion, including Athieism, which is a godless religion, can prove it is the "correct" one, and if something can't be proven, what's the use in bickering back and forth over it? Because you firmly believe in the non-existence of a deity. It's not that you don't care, or don't know, it's that you're firm in your beliefs, or in this case, disbeliefs. Just like religion.

religion – A religion is a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a supernatural agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.

What "devotional and ritual observances" are you implying atheists have? Educating ourselves? Many of us are highly moral people, as demonstrated by the relatively few atheist criminals within the prison system, but we do not have some "atheist bible" directing us. We accept the scientific explanation for the origins of the universe because it's the only one that isn't silly, and the only one that actually has the support of evidence. I have never met any atheist who believed in anything supernatural. Really, you have no idea what you are talking about, do you?

Christians cannot PROVE God exists. Atheists cannot PROVE he doesn't exist. Why not just let it go, dude, instead of belittling people for what choose to believe, or not believe?

      April 25, 2011 at 3:28 pm |
    • fimeilleur

      @ denise,

The burden of proof is on the person who made the statement of fact. You assert that God exists. PROVE IT.
and atheist disbelieves your claim of fact until you provide proof that can be tested and verified, and retested. That is all.

      April 25, 2011 at 3:52 pm |
    • JoePub

OK then, The burden of proof is on the person who made the statement of fact. You assert that God does not exist.

      April 25, 2011 at 4:55 pm |
    • denise

Actually, I don't believe either. Bit BOTH sides are making their claim as factual, so the burden of proof lies with BOTH, if indeed there needs to be a burden of proof. I'm not asking anyone to prove anything. I'm asking everyone to shut up and let people make up their own minds without being belittled, either way.

      April 25, 2011 at 5:14 pm |
    • LetsThink123

      @JoePub
Weak argument, no one can prove a negative. Let me turn it around for you.
I state that my friend DontThink believes in the tooth fairy, and i say the tooth fairy does not exist.
Now I'll use your exact proposition:
OK then, The burden of proof is on LetsThink who made the statement of fact. LetsThink asserts that the tooth fairy does not exist.
and DontThink disbelieves LetsThink's claim of fact until he provides proof that can be tested and verified, and retested. That is all.

Silly isn't it to tell someone to prove a negative. In that case i could claim that santa claus is real, and u will say santa claus is imaginary. but u will never be able to prove to me that santa claus is imaginary. so the burden of proof is on the person who makes the assertion, and it is my responsibility to prove that santa claus is real.

No Ralph that's not why you believed in GOD when you were a Child. Your Parents might have guided you. But as a Child is when Children can see things that us Adults cannot. My Brother and Sister passed away as a Baby as Triplets and I seen them as a Child, I use to talk to them and play with them. I still can feel that there still their watching over me as my "Guardian Angels". One day I will see them again just as I will see my Heavenly Father, but as Children they see things that us Adults cannot. A child goes on by Faith and are a lot closer to GOD than we could ever be. It says for us to get Saved that we must have the Inner Child in us. I have Felt GOD and I see GOD every single day, I can grasp onto him just as he can me. Look outside and YOU SEE GOD. GOD is everywhere around us for he did create everything in this world. For I heard people say that GOD is Evil because he created everything in this World. But once again you all are WRONG AGAIN! GOD did create every Human Being and every Animal but Satan has corrupted our Minds. GOD is Love and full of Truth, while Satan is Evil and is the Prince of Lies.
Heaven Father, Lord I Pray that you help each and everyone of us. Lord I know that you excist and that you loved us so much that you sent your Only Begotten Son to die for Sinner like me. A sinner like me deserves the Pitts of Hell but by the Grace that you have I was Saved. LORD I Pray that every non-believer will feel your Presence just like I have. Father you are a Loving GOD and I pray that you will have Mercy on everysingle Human Being on this Planet for we are all Sinners and deserve Hell. But you loved us so much that you sent your ONLY Son to Die for us Sinners. Thank you Jesus for your Sacrivce, in Jesus Name I Praqy Amen.

An atheist professor of philosophy speaks to his class on the problem science has with God, The Almighty.
He asks one of his new students to stand and.....
Prof: So you believe in God?

    Student: Absolutely, sir.

    Prof : Is God good?

    Student: Sure.

    Prof: Is God all-powerful?

    Student : Yes..

Prof: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to God to heal him.
Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But God didn't. How is this God good then? Hmm?

    (Student is silent.)

Prof: You can't answer, can you? Let's start again, young fella. Is God good?

    Student: Yes.

    Prof: Is Satan good?

    Student : No.

Prof: Where does Satan come from?

    Student: From....God...

Prof: That's right. Tell me son, is there evil in this world?

    Student: Yes.

Prof: Evil is everywhere, isn't it? And God did make everything. Correct?

    Student: Yes.

    Prof: So who created evil?

    (Student does not answer.)

Prof: Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the world, don't they?

    Student: Yes, sir.

    Prof: So, who created them?

    (Student has no answer.)

Prof: Science says you have 5 senses you use to identify and observe the world around you.
Tell me, son...Have you ever seen God?

    Student: No, sir.

Prof: Tell us if you have ever heard your God?

    Student: No, sir.

Prof: Have you ever felt your God, tasted your God, smelt your God? Have you ever had any sensory perception of God for that matter?

    Student: No, sir. I'm afraid I haven't.

    Prof:
Yet you still believe in Him?

    Student:

    Yes.

    Prof:
According to empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your GOD doesn't exist.
What do you say to that, son?

    Student:
Nothing. I only have my faith.

    Prof:
Yes. Faith. And that is the problem science has.

    Student:
Professor, is there such a thing as heat?

    Prof:

    Yes.

    Student:
And is there such a thing as cold?

    Prof:

    Yes.

    Student:
    No sir. There isn't.
(The lecture theatre becomes very quiet with this turn of events.)

    Student
: Sir, you can have lots of heat, even more heat, superheat, mega heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat.
But we don't have anything called cold. We can hit 458 degrees below zero which is no heat, but we can't go
any further after that. There is no such thing as cold . Cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of
heat . We cannot measure cold. Heat is energy . Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it .
(There is pin-drop silence in the lecture theatre.)

Student: What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?

Prof: Yes. What is night if there isn't darkness?

Student : You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light....But if you have no light constantly, you have nothing and it's called darkness, isn't it? In
reality, darkness isn't. If it were you would be able to make
    darkness darker, wouldn't you?

Prof: So what is the point you are making, young man?

Student: Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.

Prof: Flawed? Can you explain how?

Student: Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can't even explain a thought.. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one.To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it.
Now tell me, Professor.Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?

Prof: If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.

Student: Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?
(The Professor shakes his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument is going.)

Student: Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher? (The class is in uproar.)

Student: Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor's brain?
(The class breaks out into laughter.)

Student : Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's brain, felt it, touched or smelt it? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, sir.
With all due respect, sir, how do we then trust your lectures, sir?
(The room is silent. The professor stares at the student, his face unfathomable.)

Prof: I guess you'll have to take them on faith, son.

Student: That is it sir... The link between man & god is FAITH . That is all that keeps things moving & alive.

Student: Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor

Actually evolution has been observed, your strawman student is very misinformed.

So what happens when the professor shows everyone an X-ray of his skull and proves he does have a brain?

Worst of all, at no point does your student show which god is the real one.

Seen this many times. That you find this to be something of a useful post speaks volumes...

This post is biologically incorrect about the basis of evolution.

And we can scientifically observe electrical activity in this professor's brain. And when he dies, we can crack open his skull and observe it. You can't do any of that with "god".

If faith involves believing something with no proof, only manipulations and silly stories like this one here, then count me out. You can have your faith.

If we evolved from monkeys or apes – or whatever it is, who created it? Did it just appear oneday and life began??? And why do people argue about which God?? How about the maker and the creater? The Alpha and the Omega, The All Powerful God that bible speaks of? People can call him what they want – Allah, Budha, Elvis....but there is only ONE GOD. And if you still dont know who I'm talking about, read the bible.

Is this real, or is this another mystical parable?

... and for the last time. humans did not evolve from monkeys. humans and monkeys evolved from a common ancestor. BIG difference.

your smug little tale would be more effective if it was believable that a professor of any scientific discipline would assert that there is either cold or darkness, not to mention the other errors point out above.

That is another poorly written parable. Weak arguments.

Wow so full of poor logic and flimsy arguments. Too funny.

And I dont think Albert would claim this one, I think it was someone else.

There are hundreds of gods in circulation in the world right now. Each believer is 99.9% atheist because he or she rejects all of them except one or few. So, which believer/god/religion is right? Each believer claims their god and religion is true one. Obviously, they all can't be right, therefore they are all wrong.

can anyone name the error in logic? i cannot remember off the top of my head...

      1. if one thing does not agree with another, both things are wrong
      2. one religion does not agree with another religion about the right god
      3. both religions are wrong

      same logic...

lets follow that logic for a minute...

      1. you disagree with muslims that allah is god...
      2. since you disagree with muslims about god, you are both wrong...
      3. allah is not god... therefore Yahweh must be God

i do not expect you to agree about who is God, but the Bible is very rational if you are willing to examine it within the bounds of logic...

      1. God is just and loving.
      2. Justice requires punishment for wrong doing.
      3. Men break Gods laws and therefore are required to be punished.
      4. God is also loving, not only just. Sin must be punished.
      5. Jesus pays for your sin or you pay for your sin.
      6. Jesus did not stay dead.

In this scenario, God is just and loving.

You make no sense what so ever.... an atheist doesn't believe in God so saying believers are 99% atheist is utterly ridiculous. Your other statement....just because they aren't all right means they're all wrong???? Says who? You? Clearly you have no real understanding of the subject, either for Atheism or Creation.

      Drugs are illegal!!!!
Do NOT talk about logic... it is clearly something you are incapable of understanding. "if Allah is not God, then Yahweh must be God"... what about Odin? or Zeus? or Jupiter? or Krishna? You seem to have jumped a few steps that we are unaware of.

'In this scenario, God is just and loving'
in his own eyes maybe otheriwse its just nonsense. Hey he wipes out almost the whole world but we deserved it, its our fault, god is kind and loving and just.
God, especially in the OT, is an nasty evil egotistical SOB.
