Billboard battle over Judgment Day

(CNN) - We've told you about the caravan of RVs touring the country to warn people about the end of the world, which they say will begin on May 21.

Now, the American Atheists are mounting a counter-campaign.

The group has posted a billboard in Oakland, California - home to Family Radio, which is spreading the "awesome news" that Judgment Day is near - declaring that such messages are "nonsense."

"The Rapture: You KNOW it's Nonsense," the American Atheists' billboard announces. "2000 Years of 'Any Day Now.'"

The billboard - which cost $27,000, according to the group's website - invites passers-by to "Learn the Truth" at the group's "Rapture Party" on May 21-22 in Oakland.

The atheists also plan to hold parties in Houston, Texas, and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the website says.

"This is how religion hurts people, one of the many ways religion hurts people," American Atheists President David Silverman told CNN Oakland, California, affiliate KGO.

"Our hope is that those who are not suckered in will learn from the people who are."

Saying you know judgement day is May 21 because the bible says so is like saying you know Santa Claus exists because the Easter Bunny says so.

The rapture is a misunderstanding of scripture as it is. Those who are "taken" are killed. Look at Matthew 24, where Jesus says the event will be like that of the flood with Noah (verses 40-41). Those who were "left behind" during the flood were the ones who did not die - Noah's family. Look at Luke 17 now. Here the apostles specifically ask where those who are taken will go. Jesus tells them in not so many words, they will be corpses upon which scavenging birds (vultures, eagles, etc.) will feast (verse 37). Again, those who are taken are killed! The End of the World for most of us is our own death. That's why we can say its imminent! Once we die, we leave be bounds of linear time. The End then becomes the same event for everyone. This understanding has been around for almost 2000 years now. It's nothing new! The rapture is an invention only of the last 100 years!

Why would Jesus have to return to Earth to “judge the living and the dead” if God’s doors weren’t already closed. It seems that if you immediately go to heaven when you die, nobody would be lingering around on Earth to be judged on Judgment Day.

With all the people creating religion, you would think that they would work together to get their story straight.

Plus according to Jesus, stars will fall from the sky so I don't think there will be much of earth left once stars, galaxies and black holes smash into it.

what a waste of time. too bad they don't read the bible with the "who and what should i be? " mindset instead of such foolish hysteria. the athiests ought to send money to help the needy, not preaching intolerance, rather like those whom they protest against?

will you say the same to the "faithful" that that spend hundreds of thousands of dollars the same way? Billboards and skywriting and mass mailings and television ads? Think how many real people could have been helped in a real way with all that money.

A lot of people here are whining and complaining about one side or the other. You sound like a bunch of school kids. Grow up and be adults. Are you that insecure in your own beliefs that someone expressing a different view causes your world to colapse? Good grief. If you don't like the radio station, change it. If you don't like the billbord, don't read it.

@ colin, I like the answer"I don't know and am prepaired to leave it at that". However you did not leave it at that. The point to my question is the fact that science can not explaun everything. Be lieve what you want. the fact that we have intelligence points towards and intelligent design. I call Him God. Others call him by different names. It is possible to belive in science and "God". I do...

    April 25, 2011 at 4:17 pm |
    • Bob

Nonsense. An "Intelligent Designer" would not have assembled us with an apendix, which serves no useful purpose, but can become infected and kill us. Our teeth rot, our bones break easily, and we have a capacity to make war unlike anything else on Earth. We are just as inclined to work against our general interest as for them. You'd think some of these things would have been caught on the drawing board.

      April 25, 2011 at 4:28 pm |
    • Colin

If the mere existence of intelligence points to a designer, who designed the designer? Presumably he is far more intelligent than us.

$27,000 to slam someone's religion? Think how many sleeping bags, tents and essentials could have been bought and donated to the homeless in Oakland. Sure is a twisted sense of righteousness coming from the Atheist community.

    April 25, 2011 at 4:16 pm |
    • mckillio

Religious organizations spend way more than that a year to slam my intelligence.

You could say the same for the money that was and has been spent on the rapture billboards and advertisements. Why was that money not put toward charity?

      April 25, 2011 at 4:20 pm |
    • MarkinFL

In Orlando there is a quite rich local "true believer" that constantly barrages the skies above with skywriting about Jesus and God. I wonder how much REAL charity could have been performed with all that money? This has been going on for YEARS.

Matthew 24:36 – 38 "Concerning that day and hour nobody knows niether the angels of the heavens nor the Son, but only the Father for just as the days of Noah were, so the presence of the Son of man will be. For as they were in those days before the flood, eating and drinking, men marrying and women being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark and they took no note until the flood came and swept them all away, so the presence of the Son of man will be."

I want CNN to follow up with THAT guy on May 22nd and let him explain why it didn't happen. Let me guess: God is mysterious and we can't really know if this was his will? Something in some part of the world happened in some way that indicates that this the rapture really did happen? What are the odds that he says: "well I was sure about this, but obviously I was wrong. Perhaps I need to change the ways that I think about the Bible, and perhaps taking it literally is not the most valid way; hmmm, something I was sure of did not happen. Maybe there is no God?" I doubt it somehow.

It's ok, dew44... I think we've established that anyone can simply say that their proclamation was not intended to be a "factual statement." Then they can pick a new date for the end of the world and hope to get back into the headlines again a few days beforehand.

I just love how the religious right gets so up in arms when atheists put up a billboard, but everyone is supposed to be so pleased and happy about those billboards along the interstates that say, "Go to church: it will save your marriage" or "Where do you want to go: Heaven or Hell Read John 3:16?" Why am I not allowed to be offended by these billboards that throw Christianity in my face?

I don't care if you put up a billboard announcing and proclaiming your faith; just don't get all ticked off when someone who has a different viewpoint asks for the same courtesy.

    April 25, 2011 at 4:15 pm |
    • SomethingFancy

Agreed. So we are suppose to tolerate the Christian billboards and advertisements, but when a counter billboard is placed it causes controversey? Double standard much?

      April 25, 2011 at 4:18 pm |
    • Happy Atheist

AMEN! Preach it CD44! hahaha =) Seriously though, I completely agree with you. I live in the South and my co-workers found out today that I didn't go to church yesterday, on Easter, the holiest of all Christian holidays, and were completely appalled and think I am the devil. I bet not one single one of them could tell me the origin of celbrating Easter, and I bet they would ALL be very surprised to learn it began LONG before Jesus was crucified!!!

Just as its ok for the Christians to build 8 churches in a 2 mile stretch, but holy crap, someone wants to build a mosque?? Noooo way!! Ridiculous! I have never seen a larger group of hypocrites than those of the Christian faith! have your churches, your signs, your bill boards, and STFU when another religion wants theirs too, it is not up to you, oh wonderful church, to dictate who believes in what religion, and GTFOI if they are all not Christians!!

to the post from "Charles Darwin" .... Do you actually KNOW any atheists? Atheists are not angry! That doesn't mean that some people in general aren't angry, because some are, but their anger has absoultely nothing to do with being an atheist or muslim or christian or whatever.... some folks are just ANGRY ELVES! =)

You can only feel true beautiful joy with His love.. Until you are awakened by Him and filled with His beauty, you are at best, an animal with nothing more than temporary highs from base needs of the flesh being met through other people and things. Hedonistic people are usually full of pride and ego to cover up the misery down inside where all the pain and bitterness are that fertilized the seeds of rebellion.
There is no reasoning with them because they are asleep.

i have no issue with religion.. they can do/say what they want.
im not religious, i only hate people trying to convert/push their beliefs.
We ALL know the fundamentals of christianity.. why do you need to push it on us, same with atheism.. why do you need to argue with them?

Theres a few things I personally can not stand about christians..
      1) the "oh then how did it start".. look, just because something cant be explained.. doesnt mean you should accept some old book with talkin snakes, acceptance of slavery and beatings just because your told to.
      2) what makes your god, the one god. over the thousands upon thousands of years.. any a very large number of different gods.. what makes your god.. 'the one'? every civilization has had their god, or gods.. some have 1, some have many..
if we can cancel out all those gods existance.. why is yours special?
