Gingrich blasts secular 'fanaticism' at prayer breakfast

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich condemned the growth of American secularism in harsh terms Wednesday at a Catholic prayer breakfast in Washington.

It's a pet topic for Gingrich, who converted to Catholicism two years ago. His 2006 book "Rediscovering God in America" opened with the blistering line: "There is no attack on American life more destructive and more historically dishonest than the secular Left's relentless effort to drive God out of America's public square."

crazies like Romney and Gringrich don't have a chance in 2012, the more they run the their mouth and more stupid they look, I hope either or Trump, Palin, or Bachman wins the primay there all fools an easy victory for the Democrates or even an Independent till The GOP remebers what their party originally stood for and cast out the tea party. I personally don't care what belief a candidate has, that's their own business. Just as long as they remember seperation of church and state and do their job accordingly for all that they serve and not just pander only to ones of their faith.

Newt became a catholic and Beck became a morman and Romney is already a morman. We will be screwed as a nation and a world until we elect some athiests and secular humanists who can take god fiction out of our political sphere. Please tax all churches they have the money. If you tax Walmart why not the Catholic church they have more money. I sure hope Newt gets the nomination what a boost for the Democrates.

Sure, Christians like those ones are imposing their morals on to other people, forcing on those whom they feel are lost or inferior to them. The bible talks of no abortion and doesn't call it a sin or murder it's imposing views onto others, to make laws that restrict and deny to those they feel are sin or don't agree with like a theocracy would, when society has had enough and fights back then you cry foul claiming to be silenced and proscuted because were not seeing things in your way or laying down to your views or your morals. That's why the U.S. is secular and seperation of church and state exist. to keep that from happening to it's people to keep us free, allow us choose and decide what religion is best for us, not to be forced into one view, one choice, and one relgion as a communist or in a theocracy would enforce. We believe in the right to choose and to believe in any relegion we choose and to respect other peoples choice and beliefs even if they don't agree with our own. That's how it is here and how it's always been here. People like you try to ruin that peaceful way of life, with your nonsense, lies, hatred, and bigotry. Such a misinformed person with no facts or evidence to the garbage you spew.

    April 28, 2011 at 1:02 am |
    • LoneZero

of course that's not every christian, many believe to live and let live, not judge or enforce their views onto others and accepts others choices and beliefs, they are true christains who practice the teaches of christ, you make those good people and your religion look so bad and disgusting, it turns people away from the faith and reminds atheist who were christians why they left in the first place. Like i said keep it up your helping atheist everytime you open your trapt and spew you're lies and garbage

      April 28, 2011 at 1:07 am |
  7. LoneZero

oh save your bullsh!t, you can't back up any of the garabge you spew, your such a joke, an ignorant bigot, delusional and tyranical you can't admit your religion is not the only one and is treated equally and has to play nice with all the religons in the US it's people decided to be. does that burn you up inside? You can't tell anyone how to act or prey according your twisted views and morals? We don't believe in theocracy, we want to have the choice to believe in any relgion we want and respect other relgions other people choose. Keep mouthing your garbage, the more you do, the worse your religon looks and you make true christians look so bad, your helping Atheist every time you open your mouth, keep it up!

    • Adelina

LoneZero, why do you get so upset using dirty words if someone insists supremacy over another when you are preaching your meaningless ideology all the time? Why can't you admit your own blindspot? I'm not telling anyone how to act but only telling you what's going on in reality. Theocracy is not possible until Jesus returns. But you need freedom from your own follies and to be fair should not try to shut up Christians in USA because they are telling you something good and vitally necessary. You guys are attacking good people – the worst problem in present USA.

      April 27, 2011 at 11:58 pm |
    • LoneZero

oh stop spewing your garbage, Christians are not being silenced or being persecuted, it's just society defending itself from their attacks! Actually Christians have the loudest voice in the US, for years trying to deny rights to ho.mose.xuals, trying to outlaw abortion, trying to keep woman from obtaining equal rights, imposing their own morals, many not biblical, You guys are attacking good people. oh when you tell someone "admit your evil and find jesus" you are telling people what to do and how to act. Why can't you admit your own blindspots and how misinformed you are? You're reality is nothing more then delusional. Ever heard the saying "you can dish it out but can't take it?" If your gonna spew such hate and garbage be prepared for someone to call bullsh!t on you.

I would love to know when American became Post-christian America, last time I check it was the number 1 religion in the US. also if you actually know what pagan and Communism actually means cause it sounds like you don't. More shrill ignorance, hatred, bigotry, spewing your garbage with no respect for other peoples religons or views. Atheists don't care what people believe in they just want the same respect, secular was what our founding fathers wanted secular and is only depressing cause your so tyranical and ignorant, can't fathom a place where christian isn't the true religion where all religons are treated equally and it's people can worship or believe whatever they want not just your bs and views.

    April 27, 2011 at 11:23 pm |
    • Adelina

@LoneZero, treating everyone equal is a Christian idea. Mankind never knew that's what we needed to do. Christianity is not equal to other religions. Your forefathers never knew what pagan garbage you'd turned into. All men are oppressive by nature and need Christian values to be controlled. You just won't admit facts and are oppressing Christians in your land.

      April 27, 2011 at 11:33 pm |
    • Maybe

"treating everyone equal is a Christian idea. Mankind never knew that's what we needed to do."

Baloney. Ancient Greece - long before Christ - had a fine start on democracy (look where the word 'democracy' came from). No, they didn't quite include women and slaves, but neither did the U.S. for many years. I wonder how different the world would be today if their system had flourished and had been refined.

      April 27, 2011 at 11:54 pm |
    • Adelina

@Maybe, the ancient Greece would never have come to true fairness without Christianity. They had a primitive form of democracy but the human abuses and barbarism were just the same as any ancient civilizations. The world needed the Bible-literate Christianity to be civil in established, systematic and permanent way.

      April 28, 2011 at 12:04 am |
    • Maybe

The Bible had nothing to do with freeing the slaves, nor with getting women the right to vote. And many barbaric atrocities were carried out in its name.

      April 28, 2011 at 12:15 am |
    • Adelina

@Maybe: Mankind never knew slaves and women were equal with male citizens if the Bible didn't tell them. Christians alone freed slaves and gave women literacy. Mankind did evil under every name and item that was available. Only atheists didn't need any dogma and they carried out the worst, the most massive massacres of humans in the shortest period of time all over the world.

Yes you're right, who ever filled her head with such propaganda and lies did a very good job. I really feel sorry for her that she actually thinks Christians are being silenced or being persecuted, secular and liberal, are evil, atheist are communist, all other religions are evil and so are the people who believe in them, only Christians are good and moral, it's very sad to see something like that exist. Who could so cruel to do that to a person? I blame people like Gringrich.

      April 28, 2011 at 3:52 am |
    • civiloutside

Ummm... Adelina? The Bible doesn't say any of those things. It quite literally states that women are worth 3/5 of a man – yes, it assigns them monetary values. It also says that a woman's word is only good so long as neither her husband nor her father contradict her. It gives men the right to own (and severely beat) slaves, and specifically refers to them as property. Equality is a notion that human societies have come to in spite of the Bible, not because of it.

Read the book of Job when your not wearing your faith blinders and you will see true evil. God is not so loving in that story. Unless you think that being an accessory to murder is not a bad thing. The bishops didn't do Christianity any favors by putting that book into the canon.

If I murdered your child and then gave you mine would you think of me as a wonderful all loving individual because I gave you a replacement for your murdered child? Think about it. That is one of the most evil hateful stories in the Bible. I remember reading that story in Sunday School as a child and thought, wow, what a great story. Now I'm grown, think for myself, and see that story for what it is. Pure evil. If you want to promote your religion, I would steer away from suggesting that book.

And lo! Satan said unto God "Dude, Job only loves you 'cause he has such a great life. I bet you that if you let me murder his wife and kids, destroy his fortunes, and inflict hideous debilitating diseases on him, he'd stop loving you." And God said unto Satan "I'll take that bet!"

Oh, but we're leaving out the context. Which was this: God did it to make the point that as Job's creator he had the moral right to do whatever he wanted to the poor slob and nobody had any business saying anything about it.

Yeah... that's a cure for depression alright.

To be fair, some of the Founding Fathers probably had the intention of preventing the kind of sectarian trouble that plagued Europe at that time, the kind of denominational strife that would surface today if atheists and Muslims weren't available to rally against. Had Newt been Catholic as a boy like I was I'll bet he would have been less than friendly to protestant Americans no matter how conservative they were likely both to be. If he gets his wish, and we disappear, then he will simply shift his sights to the next enemy, and then the next until he finds himself looking down the barrel at former conservative Christians he once called friend. It was like that before, and it could easily be like that again.

When the Bible ruled the world it was called "The Dark Ages".

The Bible condones beating your child or even killing your child. Try READing it for the first time. Thankfully we live in a society that doesn't allow that to happen, well at least not the killing part.. Try using the Bible as your defense in a court of law and see how far it gets you. Some have even said God told me to do it. That didn't work out too well either.

Maybe you'll get lucky and someday the Bible will once again rule the day and then you guys can get back to your witch burning. Jeez...

      April 27, 2011 at 8:19 pm |
    • Adelina

@J-freaker: Children need appropriate discipline. The Bible condones excution of national traitors, never regular children. Read correctly. Atheists ALWAYS ignore the context. The same people killed far more number of Bible readers than witches. Human rights developed centering on the rights to read the Bible. Study history correctly, you oppressors.

      April 27, 2011 at 10:35 pm |
    • Jesusfreaker

Read Deuteronomy 21:18-21, but like you say I'm probably taking it out of context. When all else fails it's always convenient to resort to the ol' "out of context" argument. The Bible was written by man and is not perfect. I'm really amazed that so many women get caught in the Bible's web considering how anti-women it is. I don't know which is more anti-women, the Old Testament or the New Testament. They are both bad. People need to get past this "the Bible is infallible" position and see it for what it is. Any group or organization that would put men before women is not one that I would want to associate with and I'm a man.

      April 28, 2011 at 12:04 am |
    • Adelina

@J-freaker Read the passage along with I Samuel chaper 1-4 and see what happens. Israel's odedience was directly linked to its national security. Such bad individuals were traitors that put the whole nation in danger and worthy of execution even today. The Bible is perfect and has been the only defender of women and womanhood or anyone who is deemed as less. Mankind never learned equality and fairnes from elsewhere. You are just saying, "As a man I contend to be stupid and lazy and it's okay for me to be ruled by those whom actually I need to lead and protect." Rejecting the Bible makes women ugly and men cowardly. Wake up. You are making yourself lower than what you were destined by holding stupid cultural notions.

Gingrich- It's called separation of church and state. God has no place in politics.

Isn't the "Secular Left" the only thing keeping the conservative Catholics and evangelicals from tearing into each other full blown, like in the good old days?

NL, there were always pagans and uneducateds and later atheists(communists) who needed both Catholics and Protestants. America needs God. Let the Chinese Christians help you.

"uneducateds" 🙂 Thanks, I needed that!

Hmm, and you do know that communism is a economic ideology and not a religious one, right? Besides, I think that you can make a far better case for Christianity being inherently communistic, or at least socialist.

"All that believed were together, and had all things in common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need." Acts 2:44-45

"There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold. They laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. There was a Levite, a native of Cyprus, Joseph, to whom the apostles gave the name Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”). He sold a field that belonged to him, then brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet." Acts 4:34-37

But not all atheists are communists. Communists and fascists, even the Christian ones, are totalitarian, and that's the factor that I think you'd better find is the source for their disregard of human life.

Secular charities are actually more unlimited in that they do not impose preaching and have no other agenda than simply helping people.

    • Adelina

NL, no system worked and works against the human evil except the faith in Jesus. Secular charities are mimicking Christians who've been doing that for 2,000 years, and what people really need is a divine Hope – the Gospel, more than food and security. Today it's still churches that are first to help the needy and stay with them till the end in every corner. We should be happy that fattened rich nations and individuals are realizing it's evil to let poor people perish. NL, you need to see the durable nature. Christianity has been so good to you. It's outright evil to slander it when you have benefited everything from it.

Adelina/Fredrica/Justina, please stop advocating the destruction of America. Please stop spitting on the wisdom of the founders of this nation, who knew that religion has no place in government. Please stop trying to steal legal rights from Americans who don't believe as you do. Please stop advocating discrimination. You can worship as you want. Please allow the rest of us to worship or not worship as our const-itution provides.

It's clear that you hate the real America and want to create a theocracy. Why don't you try to do that in your own country. Leave ours alone. You are clueless about America.

Allow me to educate you: The usual line you clowns like to spew is that God has no place in government – a specious argument based on a court decision which does not stand up to scrutiny. Nevertheless, let's run with it. God has every place in politics and always has, for you confuse politics with government. Worse yet, Mr. Gingrich is speaking of the Public Square – an area of discourse far larger than either government or politics.

If you are going to be a leftist idiot, at least memorize the basic tenants of your athiest religion so that you don't appear to be more ignorant than what is already required of you. I'm just trying to save you some work and embarrassment. Have a nice day.

God has "every place" in politics and government in places like Iran as well. The argument is that religion has a way of leading politicians by the nose in the USA. The slightest insinuation against a politician's piety from a pulpit could ruin the chances of people having an effective representative. What's the main quality you want in a politician, piety or leadership ability?

I imagine your tune would soon change if a religious tradition other than your own were the predominant one in play. Place yourself in the shoes of a minority group for a minute and try to imagine how much better you'd be represented by a secular politician.

And "athiest religion" actually is a revelation of your own ignorance. You too have a nice day.

And Christian charities are modeled on the Jewish and Roman inst.itutions that came before them, so don't try to argue that they invented charity. Don't get be wrong, I think that Christian charities indeed do much good work, but it's more of a by-product than the main intent in many cases. The main objective of most Christian charity tends to be proselytizing, with the food, shelter and other comforts better seen as enticements rather than gifts.

Remember that the phase "There is no such thing as a free lunch" comes from the soup kitchens of the Depression era. The hungry would get fed, but they had to sit through the sermon first, and this is carried on even today in a manner not unlike the "free lunch" I once sat through in Mexico. I sacrificed 90 minutes of my vacation listening to a pitch for selling condos all for a meal that I could have bought for $10. I would never do that again, but I have a choice in that I can afford my own meals. Others aren't so lucky.

You also have to realize that Christianity is run like a business in the US. There is much compet.ition between rival churches, and sometimes enticements are offered just to get people in the door. Youth will bear through a sermon as long as it's wrapped up in a rock concert just as kids will gladly go to one fast food joint over another if there's a toy coming with their meal. Nobody would ever argue that McDonald's is in the business of giving away free toys, right?

All I'm saying is that secular charities tend to be far more focused on delivering the actual aid needed, whereas Christian charities tend to be mostly focused on selling their ideological product and are using the delivery of needed aid as a means to this primary end. If everyone still gets help, fine, but if people aren't getting the aid they need because they are turned off by being called sinners, or are passed over because they are considered poor prospects for conversion, then the religious charities aren't being as effective with doing actual charity as the secular charities are.

Sigh. I guess it needs to be said for Taro's benefit (and any others who believe as he does).

There is one and exactly one central tenet of atheism. It's this statement: "I do not believe in god."

That's it. Nothing to memorize. No dogma. No worship, or ceremonies, or party line. Nothing the cherry-pick. Just that one simple statement. An atheist can be communist, socialist, capitalist, conservative, liberal, or just about anything else that does not explicitly require a belief in any gods.

As for the Newt, he's fear-mongering. Most atheists that I know really don't care if people talk about their faith in public (or if they do care, they tolerate it becase they happen to believe in Freedom of Speech). What the "secular left" is mostly trying to do is not to shut the religious up, but merely to prevent them from using the government as their religion's bully pulpit to distribute religious propaganda (which the government is legally forbidden to do anyway!).

Yeah, you'd think that already not believing in thousands of other gods would give folks like him a pretty good handle on what it's like to be an atheist. He's probably already 99.99% atheist already, and I'll bet he never has to try very hard to convince himself that those gods are fake. All he need to do to become a pure atheist is to apply the same reasoning that he uses to reject the other gods to his own. Simple really.

"They hated when Jesus named them FOOLS as they still cling to HEATHENS."

"But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire." Matthew 5:22

Too bad for Jesus that he never read the Gospels, eh?

  19. Reality

    Blasting back at "Nutty" Newt:

From that famous passage: In 1 Corinthians 15 St. Paul reasoned, "If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith."

Even now Catholic/Christian professors of theology are questioning the bodily resurrection of the simple, preacher man aka Jesus.

    To wit;

From a major Catholic university's theology professor's grad school white-board notes:

"Heaven is a Spirit state or spiritual reality of union with God in love, without earthly – earth bound distractions.
Jesus and Mary's bodies are therefore not in Heaven.

Most believe that it to mean that the personal spiritual self that survives death is in continuity with the self we were while living on earth as an embodied person.

Also in Paul in 1 Cor 15 speaks of the body of the dead as transformed into a "spiritual body." No one knows exactly what he meant by this term since Jesus supposedly appeared to many after his "resurrection".

Again, the physical Resurrection (meaning a resuscitated corpse returning to life), Ascension (of Jesus' crucified corpse), and Assumption (Mary's corpse) into heaven did not take place.

The Ascension symbolizes the end of Jesus' earthly ministry and the beginning of the Church.

Only Luke's Gospel records it. The Assumption ties Jesus' mission to Pentecost and missionary activity of Jesus' followers The Assumption has multiple layers of symbolism, some are related to Mary's special role as "Christ bearer" (theotokos). It does not seem fitting that Mary, the body of Jesus' Virgin-Mother (another biblically based symbol found in Luke 1) would be derived by worms upon her death. Mary's assumption also shows God's positive regard, not only for Christ's male body, but also for female bodies." "

It is amazing how this agrees with Professor Crossan and the Jesus Seminarian's conclusions based on attestations and stratums.

    See http://wiki.faithfutures.org/index.php/017_Resurrection_of_Jesus for added details

    Then there is this:

"In three controversial Wednesday Audiences, Pope John Paul II pointed out that the essential characteristic of heaven, hell or purgatory is that they are states of being of a spirit (angel/demon) or human soul, rather than places, as commonly perceived and represented in human language. This language of place is, according to the Pope, inadequate to describe the realities involved, since it is tied to the temporal order in which this world and we exist. In this he is applying the philosophical categories used by the Church in her theology and saying what St. Thomas Aquinas said long before him."

The Vatican quickly embellished this story with a lot CYAP.

Of course, we all know that angels are really mythical "pretty, wingie, talking thingies".

With respect to rising from the dead, we also have this account:

An added note: As per R.B. Stewart in his introduction to the recent book, The Resurrection of Jesus, Crossan and Wright in Dialogue,

"Reimarus (1774-1778) posits that Jesus became sidetracked by embracing a political position, sought to force God's hand and that he died alone deserted by his disciples. What began as a call for repentance ended up as a misguided attempt to usher in the earthly political kingdom of God. After Jesus' failure and death, his disciples stole his body and declared his resurrection in order to maintain their financial security and ensure themselves some standing."

    o p.168. by Ted Peters:

"Even so, asking historical questions is our responsibility. Did Jesus really rise from the tomb? Is it necessary to have been raised from the tomb and to appear to his disciples in order to explain the rise of early church and the transcription of the bible? Crossan answers no, Wright answers, yes. "

So where are the bones? As per Professor Crossan's analyses in his many books, the body of Jesus would have ended up in the mass graves of the crucified, eaten by wild dogs, with lime in a shallow grave, or under a pile of stones.

    As per Professor Gerd Luedemann,

"While noting that the burial tradition may be simply a postulate "derived from the fact of Jesus' death or knowledge of Jewish purity concerns" rather than the memory of an historical event, Luedemann's own preference, influenced in part by John 19:31-37 and Acts 13:20, is that Jesus was buried by Jews who were not his followers. There was no act of affection or devotion involved in the disposal of his remains. His body was simply removed from the cross and buried in some unknown location by Jewish people wishing to protect the imminent festival from the desecration of a dead body remaining on the cross over night."

Read the whole I Corinthians chapter 15. Because Christ was risen from the dead, Christian faith is the only vital faith on earth. Atheists can't comprehend any religious text or even finish reading 2 verses in any book.

Oh, really mc? Christians know otherwise ...

      John 3:17-18

For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Thanks for the chuckle. Some professor's notes from some obscure class on alternative religions is hardly a pronouncement by the Holy See. You take yourself too seriously when you should probably get back to your french-fryer before the lunch rush starts.

From Professor Gerd Ludemann's book, Jesus After 2000 Years, p. 416, "Anyone in search of the historical Jesus will not find him in the Gospel of John......This verdict is the consensus among New Testament scholars."
