Leader of doomsday movement prepares for rapture

By Jay Kernis, CNN

From CNN's In the Arena blog: Answering today’s OFF-SET questions is Harold Camping, 89, President of Family Stations, Inc.

Camping received a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley in 1942. In 1958, after managing a construction business, Camping, along with two others, formed the non-profit ministry of Family Stations, Inc., a Christian educational network. In 1961, Family Radio began the Open Forum program, a live weeknight call-in program hosted by Camping, and broadcast on the more than 140 stations owned by Family Radio in the U.S., and heard worldwide via shortwave and a network of AM/FM stations.

Based on your study of the Bible, you have determined that May 21, 2011 is Judgment Day–that God will completely destroy the Earth. What do you predict will happen as clocks turn to 6 pm?

We cannot say emphatically that it’s 6 pm. There’s a lot of information that looks at the probability of 6 pm in any city in the world–when that great earthquake will occur. It could be that it might be just one great earthquake, but there is enough evidence in the Bible that says it will begin at one point in the world, and it could be at 6 pm—that’s a great possibility. Then as it gets to be May 21 in any other country—there will be a great earthquake there.

Watchtower Jehovah’s Witnesses have little credibility with their own fairy tale primary doctrine of Jesus ‘invisible’ second coming October 1914
    Watchtower society false prophets declare end of world in 1874, 1878, 1881, 1910, 1914, 1918, 1925, 1975, and 1984....

Oh who cares? If you are a true christian, then you have nothing to worry about. Personally, I do not believe for a second that this "prophet" has a clue when the rapture will be. But as I said before, if you are a christian, then why be worried?

rebecca, Christians worry because every single one of them has had moments of doubt when their faith has been lost. most of us have these thoughts daily and we just don't admit it. The doubts we have are natural, but it makes us feel like maybe we don't have enough faith to be chosen if and when the day comes. we are taught that if we don't believe enough, our flesh will burn in the lake of fire for eternity, and that is a terrifying thing. It's this fear that makes people give away their posessions, quit their jobs and get on a bus. So you can't use the "what do you have to worry about" line. it's the innate fear that Christians have that makes this work. it's what has made Harold Camping a multi-millionaire.

Interesting how most Christians think these people are crazy – not because of what they expect to happen, but only when.

Deep down, how jealous would they be if this group were actually right? Isn't Christianity just basically a bunch of smaller groups all vying to be God's 'special' child over each other?

Galations 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
    Prov 1:
    26 also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;

27When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.

28Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:

29For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:

Now is still the day of salvation!!

You can use scripture to defend anything you want. See? Watch:

36“No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,f but only the Father. 37As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.

And by the way? My scripture was from Matthew, directly from Jesus' mouth. Yours? Paul. Jesus trumps Paul.

As other Christians here have stated, no one knows when Jesus will return. He will come like a theif in the night. However, tomorrow is not promised To anyone. We can die & enter eternity as soon as right now.

As for people thinking Christians are afraid- it's quite the opposite. Is the second return supposed to make non-believers afraid? No. Jesus said there would be mockers & false Christs- as well as anti-christs before he returns & it is in favor TO the unbeliever that Jesus has not come back yet bc when he does, he will come in wrath & judge the unbelievers to condemnation. So his delay in his return means he is giving people more time to seek Him & receive his love & salvation from sins.

Additionally, Christians are urged to trust in the Lord and NOT LEAN ON OUR OWN UNDERSTANDING (though we need to use wisdom)- especially when it comes to calculating future events from the Bible. Jesus said there would be signs & said to keep pressing on when you see the signs, in fact he was guaranteeing that many of us would be killed for our faith (as one of those signs), as is happening in Africa, Pakistan, Iraq, Egypt, and so on.

Regarding those who mock Christianity- hey, that's your right & I'm sure you did your research to conclude that this religion is unmeritted (though many who believe have also done the research & concluded differently). Christians have def given Christianity a bad rap. But...

The message of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Jesus may not return on Saturday but that doesn't mean you won't get to meet him before Saturday.

Today is the day of salvation, tomorrow is promised to no one.

Oh, the dude IS 89. maybe he's going senile?

I think the one mistake many people make is to assume that any of these 'holy books' are anything more than what they are – the words of men. There may be a lot of wisdom in these books, and a lot of what was (valuable) oral history, and some not unexpected foresight of things to come in the (then) near term, but I find it hard to believe that the 'Creator' of all things, the reason for existence, talks to anybody.
I think it's important to keep a sense of humor about all this hubbub and a recent satire, "Meet the Antichrist" (Melynie T Gibson) puts all this in hilarious perspective. http://www.amazon.com/Meet-The-Antichrist-ebook/dp/B004YQD9XQ

I know the major mistake of mankind is to be a non-believer that doesn't know the Bible is Jesus Christ's truth about life and the hereafter. Not only that but that the Bible is His blueprint how to be the best that He wants us to be. He didn't send us to earth to go solo.

You are so right! He would not have given us His most perfect prayer to teach us how to pray…the OUR Father prayer! When we pray the Our Father ‘by ourselves’ we are praying in communion with the Saints in Heaven who are part of the Body of Christ as we, the Baptized are also members of His Body! It is not the ‘My Father’ prayert as Jesus Christ wants us to know we are never solo!

Free, that's the exact problem of atheists. You only think of your own benefits for here and now. That's the very reason you only have despair and meaninglessness for your entire life. Please remember God loves you. Never hurt yourself.

      May 19, 2011 at 6:12 am |
    • Free

And living your life as though it counts less than what you'll be after you die isn't hurting yourself? Maybe your rants against atheists are really your subconscious reflecting back at you what it knows, deep down, past your ego, to be true? Is the despair and meaninglessness of your own life making you crave a new, perfect, fantasy one? Anyone who fantasizes about a more 'perfect' anything to what they currently have is likely doing so because they're dissatisfied and dreaming of something better, right?

Makes me feel rather sad for all you poor rapture ready souls out there. You'll live your lives through without your dream ever coming true, as so many generations have before you. You're just like the people who play the lotto with all their free money in the hopes of making it rich instead of using that money to do things to enrich their lives. What a tragically sad way to let your life just slip away.

  13. Judgment Day

God will return make know mistake, May 21 2011 is Judgment Day. No man Knows has been greatly misunderstood.

Mark 4:11 And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:12 That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.
No Man Knows the Day or the Hour has been traditionally misunderstood by churches and the individual.
Mark 13:32 But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. KJV
Matt 24:36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. KJV
Other translations of the Bible might say Son of Man. The King James Version is the closes to the original Greek and Hebrew.
Is the Son in this verse Jesus?
The biblical evidence points to Jesus being God Almighty.
Philippians 2:11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. John 10:30 I and my Father are one.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. John 1.1-5
He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. John 1:10
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 1:14

1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.Isaiah 9:6

Revelation 22:13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

Deuteronomy 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:

Jesus is God Almighty And Yes He will Know the Day and Hour!!!
So the Son in this verse will have to be..
While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. John 17:12
Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 2 Thessalonians 2:3
Revelation 17:8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.
The Son of Perdition is Satan Himself
The Son in both Mark 13:32 and Matt 24:36 are referring to another Son the Man of Sin.
    No Man Knows?
Mark 13:32 But of that day and that hour knoweth no man….As Natural Man or Women we cannot Know the Things of God. Only by the Spirit Can we Know the things of God.
1 Corinthians 2: 10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
Furthermore Jesus tells us to Watch
Matt24:43 But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.
Luke 12:37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.38 And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.
Jesus spoke in parables the Servant must.
Luke 1: 45-48 But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken; 46 The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. 47 And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. 48 But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.
Revelation 3:3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee.

Through Out the Bible God has warned His Servants the Prophets. Noah Jonah Moses Daniel Jeremiah Ezekiel Isaiah..etc

Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the Lord hath not done it? Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets. The lion hath roared, who will not fear? the Lord God hath spoken, who can but prophesy? Amos3.6-8
Thessalonians 4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
Daniel 2:22 He Revealeth the Deep and Secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.
Deuteronomy 29:29 The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.
Ecclesiastes 8:5 Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerneth both time and judgment.
We compare the Word of God with the Word of God, and we let the bible interpreted the bible
Corinthians3:13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
Isaiah 28:10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:
We Watch for the Return of Christ through the Scriptures.
God has Unsealed the Knowledge of the End and has Revealed unto Babes.
Matthew 11:25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. 26Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.
Matthew 13:35 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.
Daniel 12: 4 But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. 9 And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end. 10 Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.
1 Corinthians 3:18 Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.
2 Corinthians 4:3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

As per Family Stations' IRS Form 990, Camping is paid no salary. There, however, is a "loan" to party X for $175,000 noted on the 2009 Form 990. The 2008 Form 990 was sent back to Family Stations because of many errors. Looks like Camping false prophecies extend to his dealings with the IRS!!! It also appears that Family Stations/Camping uses a lot of the money they receive in donations for investments in the the stock and bond market. "Non-profits" do not pay taxes on dividends, interest or capital gains. Another dodge by Camping to cheat the IRS and the US taxpayers?

I'm a Christian, and I do certainly believe Jesus Christ will return someday. However, there is no reason to believe it will be this Saturday:

    1) Most importantly, Jesus Christ Himself said "No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father" (Matthew 24:36, Mark 13:32). This article says it best: "If God has not even revealed to his own son the date the world will end, I doubt he has revealed it to Harold Camping".

    2) I've read the "proof" that the Second Coming will be on this day, but it is less-than-convincing. Essentially, Camping took a couple random verses with dates, added the numbers up, and it came out to May 21, 2011. He essentially did the same thing with the "September 1994 end-of-world predictions".

    3) If God actually wanted us to know the day when His Son would return, He would have made it obvious. God would not "hide" it in the Bible and leave us to figure it out. Even some of Paul's Epistles deal with this subject: worry more about being a good person than the exact day Christ will return.

    4) I'm sure Camping is a friendly guy and all, but he seems to think that he is some sort of "prophet". Due to his false prediction that the world would end in September 1994, he is already deemed a false prophet by Biblical standards (Deuteronomy 18:22)

    5) Ths article also brings up another good point: "My hunch is that the date God ultimately has chosen is one that will not be plastered on billboards around the country". It is true. When asked "What would you do if you knew that you were going to die tomorrow", most Americans will reply with "Eat all the junk-food I want", "Get drunk", "Break laws", etc. In other words, they will participate in actions that the Bible does not approve of. If God revealed the date His Son would return, people would do these immoral things.

In short, there is no reason to believe that this Saturday will be the end of the world. Jesus Himself did not know the date, so why would this guy? You can't just smash Bible verses together that reveal some sort of date and expect the world to end that day. The day the world is going to end is less important than being a good person. We have no reason to trust a, although friendly, false prophet. Lastly, end-of-the-world prophecies tend to have a negative effect.

This article sums it up: "Similarly, when next Saturday passes without a Rapture, some will say, “See, the Bible was wrong again,” when, in fact, it will have been Harold Camping who was wrong — again".

In short: let's concentrate on being a good person today. Worrying about what will happen in the future to the point where we neglect doing good today is something the Bible frowns upon.

    May 18, 2011 at 11:52 pm |
  16. Adelina

And be ready for humiliation... I feel sorry for them. The Word of God does not change. No humans are to know the date according to the Bible – that means it is any day but not May 21. They should have listened to normal Christian leaders and scholars.

    May 18, 2011 at 11:22 pm |
    • Free

No, listing a date just spoils the whole threat value of the thing because once Saturday rolls by without incident people will actually be relieved, and that will just not do. If they are not constantly in a state of fear then they may get around to, you know, enjoying life, or something, and that could lead them to being ...ew... CONTENT!! And if they were content why would they ever need God, or Heaven? The whole thing would collapse altogether without this fear in place! Don't these fools know that? It's like killing the goose that laid the golden eggs.

      May 18, 2011 at 11:49 pm |
    • Adelina

Free, Christians are the most content people, not from ignorance but because of true knowledge. You must be thankful to God because every good thing is given by Him. And as wonderful as the love of Jesus on earth is, He promised something new and something far better than the present world, and we trust Him at His word. It's not just in the Book of Daniel and Revelation but in the entire Bible. God will liberate the whole world from humanity's sin. You must repent of your sin, believe in Jesus and receive eternal life from Him now.

      May 19, 2011 at 12:24 am |
    • Free

If so content then why hope for anything so fantastic as Heaven? Makes no sense! It's like saying your happily married while fantasizing about being with someone else.

Me, I'm content enough to be totally satisfied with my life, this life, you know... the only one we really have.

@Free, you think the way you do because you don't know any better. You are blinded by your own sins. This world must not continue as it is because of the number of victims – such as unborn humans being slaughtered and the Christians you persecute.

The bible is superior to Adelina because it's a paper book that sits on a shelf and stays silent. It doesn't say anything at all.

HeavenSent (or whoever you actually are)
Are you making a reference to Paul's view that women are to remain silent with your shot at Adelina, or are you just a natural chauvinist?

That's the phony heavensent. The real HeavenSent would never insult a Christian.

"You are blinded by your own sins."
Now, doesn't every Christian also claim to be a personal sinner? Tell me how you would know that you yourself aren't blinded by this sin?

"This world must not continue as it is because of the number of victims – such as unborn humans being slaughtered"
Yet God did not see fit to end the world during WWII or any of the earlier periods where human adults were being slaughtered in droves. Better contraception would take care of this in the future thus eliminating the need for your God to destroy the world.

By 'persecute' you mean 'stand up to' or, at least, 'not shy away from', right? Seriously, can't some of you people take any criticism of what you believe at all? Are your egos really that big? Amazing!

Well, gotta get out and enjoy life for a few hours, and I hope you do the same. TTFN.

"Based on your study of the Bible, you have determined that May 21, 2011 is Judgment Day"

I'm guessing that no one actually asked him to walk them through his calculations like a rational person would? If he is so sure he's correct you'd think he'd post it online how he determined the date, wouldn't ya?

Since people are asking where the date May 21 2011 is coming from, here is one link that explains this fact:

So, basically the math comes down to counting up 7000 years (creation 6 days + 1 rest day for God all multiplied by 1000 years as per the formula that a day to God is 1000 human years) from the year of the Great Flood which he puts at 4990BC "by careful study of the Bible." How, exactly, did he get this date for the Flood? Does anyone else get where he got this date, or is it some Gnostic revelation? Similarly, he says that the Bible also gives "astounding proofs" that May 21 is the actual date. Is there anywhere where he actually lays all this calculation out, or is he just banking on his followers taking his claim at face value?

Just in case anyone is wondering. The Bible clearly states that no one knows when Jesus will return. Here is the scripture:
“But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left. Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

    —Matthew 24:36-44
Um so this guy is a liar and not speaking truths from the Bible.

Valerie, you Christians believe that there is only one god and that god the father and god the son are one. How can it know and not know the time of its return at the same time?

Isn't Jesus just as omniscient as the Father, or is he a lesser part of God?

      May 18, 2011 at 11:18 pm |
    • Adelina

It's Jesus' voluntary giving up of some attributs of God while on earth 2,000 years ago. For example, He was not omni-present either at that time.

Mark doesn't make the distinction of only the human Jesus being out of the loop, does he? Besides, wouldn't you have to be all-knowing to know that only God the Father knows something, hmm?

Free, read the WHOLE Bible, please, and many times. It has thousands of pages. You only read a verse or two once long ago. The reason you never get Christianity correctly. Read Philippians chapter 2 for this particular point.

Take the faith blinders off and read the bible critically like you would any other piece of literature and you will be very surprised what you find in there.

@Free, reading while sleeping does not count as reading. Get some Christian help if you were incompetent in comprehension. If non-christians behave more honorable than Christians, I'd consider your points, but you guys are bunch of shallow perverts. One of the many proofs the Bible is superior to you.

The only difference between this cult and Christianity in general is that these guys actually set a date. Every other aspect of their belief – a mind reading, all-knowing sky god, the second coming, life after death, miracles, people rising from the dead and all the other supernatural nonsense is common to virtually all Christianity.

Christians looking down their noses at these guys is like the creationists disdaining the views of the flat Earthers.

You see, the end of the world belief only works as a threat, like your dad saying that some day he'll ground you for a month, but once you call your dad on making good on a threat like this it all falls apart because dad really doesn't want to hand out that kind of punishment. Every one of these predictions registers as another time that God was called on this threat, but didn't deliver. Just as well, because nobody really thinks that a loving father would punish his children so severely anyway.

David, that's because you don't know the following scripture.

But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day [is] with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
