My Take: This just in, Tennessee court says Islam is a religion

Editor's Note: Stephen Prothero, a Boston University religion scholar and author of "God is Not One: The Eight Rival Religions that Run the World," is a regular CNN Belief Blog contributor.

By Stephen Prothero, Special to CNN

A few months ago I spoke at an interfaith forum at the University of North Alabama. One of the speakers on my panel was Ossama Bahloul, imam of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro.

Bahloul began his talk by observing that God must have a sense of humor to have given him a name as problematic as Ossama. But the heart of his talk concerned the compatibility of Islam with American values.

What surprised me about Bahloul, in both his public talk and our private conversations, was his deep and abiding faith in America. Signs at the construction site for his planned mosque had been vandalized twice and federal investigators had determined that a fire at the site was intentionally set. Efforts to build that mosque, appropriate for a growing congregation that had been active in the area for roughly two decades, were met not only with protests but also with a lawsuit.

Follow CNN's Belief Blog on Twitter

Yet Bahloul continued to believe that what was right would win out in the end.

In the lawsuit, opponents of the mosque argued, among other things, that Islam was not a religion and therefore was not entitled to the free exercise protections and special zoning treatment given to religious organizations. But last week, a Murfreesboro court ruled for the Islamic center.

In his ruling, judge Robert Corlew announced "that Islam is a religion." The fact that a court of law in the United States would actually have to make such a finding is a sad commentary on where we are today in the United States in terms of religious literacy.

Tennessee imam: My mosque was torched

Islam is not just a religion. It is the second largest religion in the world, with over 1 billion adherents. And as the Murfreesboro case demonstrates, some of these Muslims are our neighbors.

There is still one legal issue unsettled in this case—a technical matter concerning whether a prior proceeding allowing the mosque construction had followed the rules of a local open meetings ordinance. But, as the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro noted on its web page yesterday, the building permit is now in hand.

And, at least for now, the First Amendment is still the law of the land in Tennessee.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Stephen Prothero.

It appears only the dumb kuffar come on forums like these. Very few (wrong) facts and a lot of emotion (typical of a frustrated hateful kafir).
Taqiyya is a shia concept, which has nothing to do with Islam. Jizya is a word for tax on the dis-believers. Dhimmi is a person who lives under the beautiful Shariah. Dar al harb is where Muslims are getting killed/oppressed etc. and when people fight back to defend freedom, justice and peace. (Like Salahaddin Ayyubi whopped the you know what of the barbaric crusaders who were killing Muslims and jews). God-willing the truth shall take over. SAY AMEN those who believe in One Creator.

wow – i sincerely hope ANYONE reading that statement has the 30 seconds necessary to double check those islamic terms you're lying about,

Taqiyya (actually that is a shia concept, but thats 1/3 of islam – so it is NOT to be discounted)

Dar al harb – or "abode of war" is where muslims can use -ANY MEANS- necessary to kill / defeat infidels and further Islam.

Dhimmi- is the name for the second-class citizens who are (and I quote the quran) SUBDUED AND SUBJUGATED by islam

Jizya- is the tax you pay to LIVE for being an infidel in a muslim country.

Islam can be proven to be a false religious system when its truth claims are tested to see if they correspond to reality. Furthermore, Islam's Quran is full of innacurate statements concerning the Bible. Here is my top three, for now...

      1. The Quran's claim that Noah's flood took place in Moses' day is completely false (Sura 7:136, compare 7:59ff).

      2. Muhammad's serious error in confusing Mary, the mother of Jesus, with Mary, the sister of Moses and Aaron, reveals that he had great confusion as to biblical time periods and biblical figures. (see Sura 19:28)

      3. The Quran's misrepresentation of the Christian doctrine of the Trinity proves that Muhammad never understood the doctrine of the Trinity. In Sura 5:73-75, and 5:116, Muhammad mistakenly thought that Christians worshiped three gods: the Father, the Mother (Mary), and the Son (Jesus).

I read the news, and as part of my job, I keep close watch on Islamic guerilla groups / terrorist movements / etc, and their death counts from their actions.

I wont go into details, suffice to say: They kill every day, all over the world, in the name of allah and mohammed and the quran.

The typical islamist and their apologist will come out and name X Y and Z people / persons,

because it is -POSSIBLE- to name every christian terrorist, they are so few that they are easily remembered

If you even tried to remember all the islamic terror movements, terrorists, and terrorist events (suicide bombings, rocket attacks, etc)

      your puny head would pop.

ISLAM, THE ORIGINAL RELIGION. Muslims believe that Islam (meaning “submission to Allah”) is the original religion since the creation of Adam, the first prophet. Since the beginning of time, all people who submit to Allah are called Muslims. Over the centuries, Allah appointed thousands of prophets to warn and guide mankind. Promininent among them were Ebrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), Dawud (david), and Isa Al Masih (Jesus the Messiah).

MUHAMMAD, THE FINAL PROPHET. Mankind habitually strayed from the way of Allah revealed through the prophets. About AD 610 in Arabia, Allah sent the last prophet, Muhammad, who untied the Arab tribes and turned them from idolatry to Islam.

THE SPREAD OF ISLAM. After the death of Muhammad in AD 632, Sunni Islam rapidly spread from Arabia under the leadership of the first four “rightly guided” rulers (Caliphs) who were close companions of Muhammad. Shia Islam began to rapidly spread through the teachings of “Infallible” Imans from the bloodline of Muhammad. To Muslims, the military and economic expansion of Islam liberated people suffering under the corrupt Byzantine and Persian Empires.

ADAM AND JESUS. Christians also trace their religious history back to Adam, who brought the curse of sin upon all mankind. (Gen. 1-3) In the Bible, Jesus is known as the second Adam, who came to remove this curse of sin. (Rom. 5)

ADRAHAM AND JESUS. God’s plan unfolded carefully over history. Abraham (Ebrahim in Arabic) was promised the blessing to carry out God’s eternal purposes. He was blessed so he could be a blessing to all the families of the earth. (Genesis 12:1-3; Galatians 3) Jesus is the promised seed of Eve who would crush the head of Satan (Shaytan in Arabic – Genesis 3:15) and bring the blessing of the “Good News” (Injil in Arabic).

THE VICTORY OF JESUS. A great war has been raging throughout the Creation, a struggle in which Satan has twisted all good things—even religion—into weapons to discredit God. The decisive battle of this war was won on the cross when Jesus destroyed Satan’s power and overcome the curse of sin. By rising from the dead, Jesus conquered death, a consequence of the curse, and thereby offers the blessing of eternal life to mankind.

Islam has nothing to offer. The reason muslims so desperately hold on to it is because their culture/religion dind't contribute anything to the modern world. The islamic ideology is all they have which is sad because it shows what a bunch of pathetic losers they are. nNt even their "prophet" is genuine. He was a fraud and never talked to allah as the koran, god's word, is full of mistakes and contradictions. God doesn't make mistakes, so mohammed was a fraud (and liar, murderer, racist, slave trader).

I've been marrried for 27 years to a religious Muslim man. I feel sorry for the non-Muslim woman who have to do all the housework and office work. When they get older, their children dump them in old-age homes. Islamic homes are filled with light and happiness..its just a beautiful family environment. We have respect for each other and our elders. We don't sit with our son's and daughters and watch filthy adult stuff on the Television like the non-Muslms do....we honestly think that the Islamic way of superior way of life is far superior than the non-Muslim way of life...I wear the head scarf and the veil and educated...women's role is to take care of the family it is a full time job...

Reading the comments here posted by muslims (e.g. jesus was a muslim, islam brought progress to the world etc) shows talking to themis just a waste of time. They are so brain washed, it's almost bizarre. It's funny though how they seem to believe what they write. Let's just deport all muslims and move on. The 3rd millennium just started. I thinks its sad we needed a judge to declare islam a religion. It is a religion and should receive the same protection as any religion in this country. Let them build their mosque in peace. America has freedom of religion. so let this people practice their faith. They need to do the same for all of us (christian, jew, hindu, atheist.....etc), but we need to do it too.

Guess what folks, if you are not actively "submitting and subjugating" yourself to islam as the QURAN ITSELF states you must as a Jew / christian, then you are rejecting islam: and that means you are a follower of satan (according to the muslims of course, you dont have to actually be worshipping satan)

Guess what treatment perceived satan-worshippers get in muslim countries?

Well said Nick well said. Honestly dont waste time on people like him or her. They dont even know their own religion. Jesus never claimed to be "GOD."
    try again:
ohn 14:7-10 [7] If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him." [8] Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us." [9] Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, `Show us the Father'? [10] Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.

John 10:30 "I and the Father are one."

John 14:11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves.

John 10:37-38 [37] Do not believe me unless I do what my Father does. [38] But if I do it, even though you do not believe me, believe the miracles, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father."

Matthew 27:43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, 'I am the Son of God.'"

John 17:11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name–the name you gave me–so that they may be one as we are one.

John 10:31-33 [31] Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him, [32] but Jesus said to them, "I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?" [33] "We are not stoning you for any of these," replied the Jews, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God."

open a bible and read it before you make such foolish statements, "Nationof786. You are the
"uneducated person" here. And so arrogant,
"I can go on and on buddy...So dont make it seem like islam is a hateful religion because the truth is, its a peaceful religion."

wow...you do not have a clue, the guy who sits next to me at work is a Muslim and he agrees that more madness
is done by Muslims then any other one group. Read a news paper buddy, You can pick at the old testament all you want to try to prove your points it just proves how little you know the bible, but I will never make a blind man see. Have a great day buddy.

Because the only way their cult rules is through FEAR.

ITs why people won't speak up against Islam, its why they wont even educate themselves on Islam. Non-muslims are AFRAID of what they might find out,

and Muslims are AFRAID of what non-muslims might do if they empower themselves with knowledge. The clearest sign that Islam is not the "quickest path to connect to god!" as abu yusuf said,

is if a muslim converts OUT of islam – and believe me, they do, and more want to , but threatened with death of themselves and their families... they put on the charade of being a muslim still. pity...

No, actually, there is no such thing as SIN. Religions create rules designed to keep the sheeple in line and unquestioning; violations of these rules are referred to as "sins" and the religions heap guilt and punishment on these rule breakers and promise they will suffer even greater punishment in the mythological afterlife to instill fear in their followers that they may maintain power over them.

If there really were such a thing as a "sin" it would be being either stupid enough or lazy enough to unquestioningly follow such patent absurdity as deity worship and to allow others to tell you what is right and what is wrong and that it's OK to violate those mores and do what is wrong when it's in furtherance of your "religion".

When you say Jews are united against Islam –

you make me LOVE the Jews.

GOD BLESS ISRAEL – little beacon of light and hope in a sea of death worship and cultists.

the uncivlized westernes still don't wash themselves after taking a dump...(freakin nasty)

-media mixes truth with falsehood...so is is the nature of the anti-christ.....yes anti-CHRIST not anti-a****

But I do not know how they take a dump, I will have to ask a Muslim, it seems they like to watch. I still cant get over that statement, wow, I will be looking for people looking over the stall walls today at work. I love Muslim who say stuff like that. So...Can someone PLEASE explain to me – WITHOUT changing the subject OR just plain lying, why Islmaic nations, in the name of Islam:
    1. Legalize the killing of converts from Islam to other faiths
    2. Forbid the proselytizing of other religions
    3. Refuse the education and freedom of wives to drive
    4. Allow the beating of wives

O peaceful wonderful Islamists, just explain this to me without changing the subject or lying.

Because just like all of the oppression and violence perpetrated in the name of Christianity, people use religion to justify heinous acts.

One can't condemn awful things done in the name of islam and ignore the awful things done in the name of christianity (or any other major religion) without being a hypocrite. Or blind to history. Or willfully ignorant.

It's simple Donald, their Countries were founded on their respective religions while our was founded by progressive thinkers who saw the need for religious freedom and so incorrporated it within our const itution.

Its funny all the people defending Muslims and pointing fingers towards christens are not really too great in math. We are talking about percentages here. The Percentage of Bad muslims vs the Percentage of bad people in other religions. Its not a christian, Buddhist, hindu, jewish sucide bomber who gets paid millions of dollars from saudia Arabia(AKA EDUCATED SO CALLED MODERATE MUSLIM COUNTRY) to blow up cities in US and Europe. The problem is non MUSLIMS are scared to step up and say anything against the MUSLIM world. So its much easier to find stupid things and defend them.

I disagree. I think problem is that anti-Muslims in the US fail to understand that their own freedoms are upheld by the same laws that they wish to deny to Muslims in the US. If they wish to repeal the Free Exercise clause of the First amendment, go for it. Until then these are Americans wanting to practice their religion, plain and simple.

This answered all four of your questions: " people use religion to justify heinous acts."

So, I stayed on topic, and added more. What's the problem in that?

Donald, people interrupt their religious text to mean anything they want. It's a reflection of the culture that created the text in the first place. Does that answer your question.
