1919 signed letter contains Hitler's first known stance on Jewish 'removal'

By Dana Garrett, CNN

New York (CNN) - A signed letter by Adolf Hitler, which contains what is believed to be the earliest written expression of his views on Jews and anti-Semitism, was unveiled at a press conference in New York on Tuesday by the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

Rabbi Marvin Hier said the letter, written in 1919, is "one of the most important documents in the entire history of the Third Reich."

Wearing white gloves to protect the fragile, yellowing document, Hier, founder and dean of the Wiesenthal Center, pointed out what he considered to be the most significant phrase in the four-page, typed letter - the words "Entfernung der Juden," German for "removal of Jews" - which Hitler wrote must be the government's "final goal."

"In 1919 he wrote this. Twenty-two years later he implemented it as Chancellor of the Third Reich," Hier said. "He removed the Jews altogether."

The Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish human rights organization, purchased the letter from a private dealer for $150,000 and will put it on permanent display in July at the center's Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles.

Hitler was a 30-year-old veteran of World War I when he wrote the letter on September 16, 1919. At the time, he was working for the propaganda unit of the German army, Hier said. It was Hitler's supervisor, Capt. Karl Mayr, who assigned him the task of articulating the army's position on the Jews for Adolf Gemlich, who was an army spy. (At about the time he wrote the letter, he also attended a meeting of the German Workers' Party to find out more about them, at Mayr's request. Later, it would be the National Socialist Workers' Party, and Hitler would be its chairman.)

The letter, which was written on a German army typewriter, is addressed to Gemlich. It was authenticated in 1988, according to the Wiesenthal Center.

In the letter's English translation provided by the Wiesenthal Center, Hitler identifies Judaism as a race, not a religion, that has been preserved "through a thousands years of inbreeding" and is only concerned with "the pursuit of money and power."

"The result of which is that a non-German race lives among us with its feelings, thoughts and aspirations, while having all the same rights as we do," Hitler wrote.

He warned against anti-Semitism "born of purely emotional ground," which he wrote would only lead to pogroms - referencing the organized mob attacks that targeted Jews in Russia and, later, Germany. Hitler's letter makes clear he had a larger objective in mind. "The final goal must be the removal of Jews," he wrote. "To accomplish these goals, only a government of national power is capable and never a government of national weakness."

Hier said the letter was found in 1945 in the Nazi Archives near Nuremberg by an American soldier, William F. Ziegler, and sold to an historical documents dealer.

It has remained in private hands since then. Hier said a dealer offered him the letter in 1988, but then sold it to another collector before the Wiesenthal Center could verify its authenticity.

When it was offered a second time, Hier said there was no hesitation.

"We knew immediately that the Gemlich letter is absolutely historic. There is nothing like it in the world," he said.

Hier said an unsigned "office copy" of the letter exists in Munich, which scholars have known about, but that the copy now in the hands of the Wiesenthal Center is the only signed copy. It has never been publicly displayed.

Hier said the letter is significant in large part is because there is no known signed order by Hitler for the extermination of the Jews. Instead, it was the No.2 man in the Reich, Hermann Goering, who gave the order in July 1941 to Reinhard Heydrich, the head of the Nazis' security apparatus, to carry out "the final solution of the Jewish question."

"This is the first document and only document of its kind that deals with the Jews exclusively and postulates the solution," Hier said of the Hitler letter.

Whether Hitler had in mind concentration camps and mass extermination at the time is not a question that can be answered by this document, Hier said. "But I can tell you that Hitler in 1919 said we don't want any Jews in the country that I live, and I don't want them removed by corner pogroms. I need them removed by a legal system where the government legally removes them," Hier said. "That is unprecedented." he added.

Hier said he hopes the letter, which will be part of an interactive display in Los Angeles, will be used to teach students young and old about demagogues and the consequences of taking them lightly.

He said if people had taken bets in 1919," they all would have bet this is a lot of nonsense, nothing would happen like this. And 22 years later, it happened exactly as he wrote it.," he said.

There is so much hate in this world, hate is contrary to God's will.
A just and loving God could not condone, the evil that is perpetraded in his name!
I guess when we have gone amok, not respecting God will to bring us here in the first place!
Time to reset unplug, this is going nowhere, untill we start to resp/ect one another's diferences.
    But than Kumbya and whatever's.
It does't mean anything till we understand what is important.

So should we "LIKE" all that these Zionist Jews are DOING to us?

And if we dare to SPEAK about their ACTIONS, how does that make us "hateful"?

Guess we should just bow our heads and take whatever they are dishing out, without saying a single word in our defense. Otherwise, someone might come along and call us "hateful" (or "antisemitic").

From my understand of the ordeal the final solution o what europe called the "Jew Question" was that, the final solution. In the 19teens many Germans wanted the jews to be sent away to madagascar of all places. Karl Marx wanted to give them cypress or somthing, and ban them from main land europe. Spainish inquisition as another of thwe climatic policies dealing with the "Jew Question".

The liberal Lion Ted Kennedy himself was till the end a strong supporter of Israel and refused to except a two state policy as what was best for the world.

Time to realize the new terror in the middle east founded out of the ashes of the horrible events under Nazi Germany:

Zionism is racism and unending war.
    Love it, or leave it.

The so called "peace process" has always been a fraud, because it is similar to a little girl on the ground, with the foot of a 300 lb man on her throat, supposedly negotiating over who gets the lollipop. As a factual matter, it is clear by now there will never be any real peace agreement:

    1) The two state solution is foreclosed by forty years of illegal annexations and forced colonization of the West Bank. It is simply infeasible now. Look at a map of the "settlements". And in any meaningful way, the Israeli government rejects it outright.

    2) The one state solution (unitary democratic and non-sectarian) confronts the issue of an absolute political sovereignty based on race. A "Jewish" state. A master race. This is clearly a racist formulation. The Palestinians from whom the land was stolen, they should not have equal rights in a one state solution? Just why exactly?

    3) An Apartheid state cannot be sustained. The second class conditions of Palestinians within Israel proper, denied such as building permits or sewer connections, with homes subject to arbitrary demolition for new "settlements" etc., the third class conditions of those in the West Bank, penned in like animals by vast concrete walls, whose vehicles are subject to immediate and non-recourse confiscation if they even drive on the roads, and the fourth class conditions of those unfortunates in the Gaza ghetto, subject to white phosphorous bombing and mass death and devastation as in Operation Cast Lead, all of this just cannot be sustained. To any but a Zionist, this is clearly an Apartheid state.

    4) The expulsion of millions of Palestinians to Jordan at the point of a bayonet (population “transfer” in Zionist speak) is simply not feasible either. No solution there.

    5) The Palestinian cause and demands for justice, including the same right of return that the Jews maintain, has the full backing of a quarter of all humanity, being the entire Muslim world. Despite its many internal discontents (and granted there are many) this is the one thing all agree upon. Greater “strategic depth” is hard to imagine.

    6) All the vast military power and all the nuclear weapons of Israel are useless to resolve this impasse. The cancer is internal, is political, is demographic, and is growing.

Ergo, there is no solution. For my part, I just want America off this bus before it heads off a cliff.

I would have hated a race or a group of people (jews) living in my country (ie Germany) with their own agenda not valuing national interest. For that, I would have expelled them, not kill them. Hitler needed psychological treatment..

Most of this is complete crap. Just so you know.

Israel was invaded by its neighbours thrice in the last 50 years. Three times, it was attacked and defeated the invaders, and let us not forget that israel has ALREADY returned almost all of the land it annexed from its attackers in those wars. Which, it coocurs to me, is an incredible double standard anyways, as we dont seem to be asking anybody else victorious in 20th century wars to return their annexed land... East prussia anyone?

Here is another little factoid for you to consider. 1.4 million isareli citizens are Arab Muslims. Thats 20% of the population. Those Arab muslims who are israeli citizens enoy more rights and freedoms than the Arab Muslim residents of ANY OTHER NATION in the Middle East. Those same nations of the midle east insult Israel for its treatment of the Palestinians, but (firstly) refuse to allow any of these same palestinians into their own countries, and (secondly) actually provide their own citizens with FEWER rights than the palestinians have.

Israel is certainly no saint, and a few of their actions have been downright appauling, no question. yet when compared to all of its neighbours, it is about 20 steps up.

They are not citizens of Israel, they are persecuted and demeaned and kicked from their own homes. They cannot vote or own land. Israel does not even allow non-jews to immigrate. Israel has given back land? When? They've been taking and taking for DECADES.

      June 8, 2011 at 4:06 am |
    • Dogwelder

All of its neighbors? How about Iran? They have never invaded another country IN KNOWN HISTORY. How is that for a track record.

      June 8, 2011 at 4:07 am |
    • Gaunt

Again, you are a liar. These 1.4 million Muslim Arab citizens are full citizens of Israel with all rights. And are far better off than full citizens in any state in the region. Are you claiming Israel has NOT given land back? Never heard of sinai have you? Doesnt surprise me, considering how stunningly uneducated you are, you worthless, lying holocaust denier

People who think the Israelis are doing the same thing that the Nazi's did to them to the Palestinians are sad. Apparently a lot of people don't really know what happened during those years prior and around WW2. There were gruesome medical experiments done on the Jewish people, harsh beating and prejudice on a scale that makes the Palestinian occupation look nice. The Jews suffered MILLIONS of death, people had to hide to avoid capture, mass starvation, disease, and abuse beyond anything seen since.
So to compare the Palestinians struggle to that of the Jews of that time period is not only ridiculous but laughable. There is no real comparison at all.

Fine, if you want apples to apples how about the killing of 20-60 million Christians by jews in Russian Gulags during the regime of the Bolsheviks?

      June 8, 2011 at 3:50 am |
    • Gaunt

Dogwelder, where are you pulling this bafflingly false bullsh!t from? Since when does judaism and Bolshevism have anything to do with each other in the mind of anybody except Hitler himself? The Communists PERSECUTED the jews at the end of Stalin's reign. Yes there were millions killed in Stalinist Rusia, but they were not Christians and they were not killed by jews.

Then again, you earlier claimed that the holocaust didnt happen, so clearly you are pathalogically insane and stupid beyond easy description.

      June 8, 2011 at 3:55 am |
    • Jason Rogers

      @Dogwelder
Yes I agree with you that is terrible, but I am not comparing that part of history. I am comparing the Palestinian occupation to the Jewish holocaust specifically because quite a few people in many forums on related articles seem to think the Israelis are doing the same to the Palestinians what the Nazi's have done to them. And I am just saying it isn't true at all.

Intolerance and discrimination is at the core of both cases. While the degree of human suffering might be different, there is little doubt that, from a Plastinian prospective, the Zionist Agenda (purify Plastine from all none Jews) is similar to Hilter's Agenda (purify Germany from all Jews). I have been a refugee since I was born and I simply want my children to enjoy the same rights that Israeli children enjoy in my homeland. No sustainable peace and security can be achieved without solving the "right of Plastinian refugees to return home"

They have been explaining to me what happened to the Jews since I am 10 years or so (today I'm 24) and I say it : I'm tired. Explain to me what happened to the native Americans, to the aborigenes, tell me why Europe had colonized Africa (and continues in a certain way), explain to me what happened to the Tzighanes, explain to me the 400 years of slavery. I can't hear the history of Jews no more. They are not the only once who have suffered. They just over doing it, this has become a business, the Shoah business, a way to justify what Israel is doing to the Palestinians. Stop this propaganda and look at the suffering of others.

Are you really so dim that you think nobody is talking about Slavery? have you ever even set foot in the US, or haiti or any of the west Indies former slave states? You think Slavery is unmentioned, not talked about, some dark secret? Please try and be not quite so retarded.

You think Africans dont talk about colonisation? You think that topic of conversation never comes up, that no books have been written about it?

The Holocaust was a terrible, and yes, unique event in human history, not necessarily in its scale, but in its nature. It was also done in the modern era, a mere 60 years ago, by a civilised modern western country.

I say it again. They are not talking about the other atrocities happened in human History as they are talking about the Shoah. 400 years of slavery and 400 millions slaves cannot be compare to what happened to the Jews ? I do not hierarchize the suffering. I am just tired of this propaganda. Of course they talk about slavery in Haiti, in Africa, in the US because it's a part of their History. But the Holaucost is put as the top of all suffering. I say NO it's not. Talk about ALL suffering or stay quiet. Jews are not better than black people or Tsighanes, or aborigenes or native americans. And the Shoah has not the same importance in Africa. What is important in Africa it's the slavery, the colonisation, the famine. What should be important in America is the racial segregation, the massacre of native americans. Jews had suffered but they are others people who have also suffered. Talk about it. that's my point.

Alicia, when you close your ears to knowledge, you also close your mind. If you're tired of learning about problems how can you learn to prevent them? How do you expect to learn about the causes?

Yes, if you dropped out of high school, that was a bad idea. Ideas are what we discuss here. If you're tired of hearing about the issues, you shouldn't be reading about them. I recommend reading the comics. That way you won't run into many ideas to tire you.

If you get bored in the world, remember there are many ideas to learn about and you can always return to school for more information. Here's an idea for you: demagogues are dangerous.

the human race espouses greatness and travesty; Hitler and the Jews, Apartheid and South Africa, American and Native Americans....sadly maybe more travesty than greatness. One day we'll have to get past the division, we are one people, one planet, one chance to make it better...maybe one last chance...probably one last chance?

To all those who are Jews and Muslim bashing here, you are no better than Hitler or any other such person who has committed crime against humanity.

The point is, religion has caused more problems than any other item. If we take Israel and make it a country, not a Jewish country, I believe most of the problem will be solved.....but the reference to Israel as a Jewish State creates a problem. Any country built on the basis of religion is a problem.
Thank God for America....although the Americans as also becoming less tolerant of other religions.

Let's talk about slavery. 400 years of slavery. 400 000 000 slaves. Tired of this Shoah business. Have we forgotten the suffering of others ? Why should we always talk about the Shoah ? Let's talk about slavery, about colonisation, about the massacre of the aborigenes in Australia, the Native Americans in America, about the Tzighans under Hitler's regime ... stop the Shoah business !!

Alicia I agree 100% with you. Yeah I do feel sorry for what had happend to the jews, but they are not the only people who have sufured. 100 and 100 of years there were slaves in america, and in other countries, think about what those people went threw. They probably went threw alot more then what the jews went threw. It really bothers me that they are only looking in on ww2, they need to look into alot more other things.

This article is about a specific piece of evidence which, for the first time, ties Adolph Hitler to the genocide, 'the final solution' of killing Jews with a letter he wrote. Alicia, if you want to discuss other issues about genocide and slavery, you could find more appropriate places.

There are people still living who were interred in the camps and who suffered under the Nazis. There are people who liberated them who are still living. You appear to be young and ignorant of these facts. I worked with a woman once who was in Auschwitz (look it up), and she was willing to speak about it to me. This isn't ancient history, child. It's living history.

      Learn some.

Just burn the piece of garbage trash for what it is, a piece of garbage trash with garbage trash written by a piece of trash. Why would you handle that piece of paper with gloves? Just crumple it up and burn it away. We don't need the thoughts of a demented lunatic who caused some of the greatest atrocities against humanity in recorded history.

Communist Genocide in Soviet Union – Jewish Bolsheviks Murder 60+ Million in Russia & Ukraine, 1917-1987

Also: the holocaust never happened. Sweet dreams ignorant lemming.

Actually, we do. Hitler's twisted 'fans' have defended him and claimed he knew nothing about the genocide of Jews under him. Now we have proof that he wanted Jews dead and out of 'his' country. This is important to history.
