Top evangelical to Anthony Weiner: Try Jesus

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - One of the nation’s most prominent evangelicals has entered the debate over whether Anthony Weiner will benefit from therapy, encouraging the embattled  Jewish New York congressman to try Jesus instead.

Albert Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, tweeted this message of the weekend: “Dear Congressman Weiner: There is no effective ‘treatment’ for sin. Only atonement, found only in Jesus Christ."

The tweet set some tongues a wagging, especially because Weiner is Jewish.

USA Today said the remark echoed Fox News' Brit Hume comment that golfer Tiger Woods, a Buddhist, should try Christianity after he became embroiled in a sex scandal last year.

Mohler, who leads the flagship school of the Southern Baptist Convention - the nation's largest evangelical denomination - took to his blog Tuesday to defend himself amid the controversy, noting that his tweet “never mentioned Judaism.”

“Rep. Weiner’s problem has to do with the fact that he is a sinner, like every other human being, regardless of religious faith or affiliation,” Mohler wrote. “Christians — at least those who hold to biblical and orthodox Christianity — believe that salvation is found through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and in him alone.”

Mohler called the controversy over his tweet “another sign of how politically incorrect biblical Christianity is becoming in our times.”

What do you think? Is Mohler simply stating Christian doctrine? Or is it improper to suggest that members of other religious traditions who are facing crises try Jesus?

Why does the Atheist hate rellligion and GOD so much and yet they ask us to try to check out their belief? Please , if you don't believe in Jesus, have RESPECT for HIM like i respect you for being an Atheist.
For me I believe there is GOD in JESUS . It's like i believe that i have PARENTS.

How dare you say like that? people sin because there is no GOD, HOLY SPIRIT in them. When they are away from GOD's WORDS (the Bibble) they tend to go to temptation and commit sin. Do you think it is your parents' fault if you commit adultary? NO. They have given you good advices, but it is all up to YOU.So please, respect the LORD like we respect our parents

The "Reverend" Mohler should look within:

    From: http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1855948_1861760_1862212,00.html#ixzz0jg0lEyZj

“Facing calls to curb child se-x abuse within its churches, in June the Southern Baptist Convention — the largest U.S. religious body after the Catholic Church — urged local hiring committees to conduct federal background checks but rejected a proposal to create a central database of staff and clergy who have been either convicted of or indicted on charges of molesting minors. The SBC decided against such a database in part because its principle of local autonomy means it cannot compel individual churches to report any information. And while the headlines regarding churches and ped-ophilia remain largely focused on Catholic parishes, the lack of hierarchical structure and systematized record-keeping in most Protestant churches makes it harder not only for church leaders to impose standards, but for interested parties to track allegations of abuse."

Mohler was not insensitive or demeaning to Weiner at all, he truly believes that Weiner can find everlasting redemption and forgiveness in no other source but Jesus Christ. The horrible thing would be if Mohler believed this and didn't tell anyone. America needs to stop exploiting the "victim" card of intolerance and realize not only that worldviews inevitably clash but that beliefs have significant consequences – eternal ones.

And for added thought, here is what Professor JD Crossan has to say about atonement theology: (from his book, "Who is Jesus" co-authored with Richard Watts)

"Moreover, an atonement theology that says God sacrifices his own son in place of humans who needed to be punished for their sins might make some Christians love Jesus, but it is an obscene picture of God. It is almost heavenly child abuse, and may infect our imagination at more earthly levels as well. I do not want to express my faith through a theology that pictures God demanding blood sacrifices in order to be reconciled to us."

"Traditionally, Christians have said, 'See how Christ's passion was foretold by the prophets." Actually, it was the other way around. The Hebrew prophets did not predict the events of Jesus' last week; rather, many of those Christian stories were created to fit the ancient prophecies in order to show that Jesus, despite his execution, was still and always held in the hands of God."

"In terms of divine consistency, I do not think that anyone, anywhere, at any time, including Jesus, brings dead people back to life."

Come on already! What is all of this JESUS talk?

Seriously people, doesnt EVERYBODY already know that there is no JESUS? And there never was?? THERE IS NO EVIDENCE of him and it's just a story tell by the romans! the romans made him up! It's true, look itup.

We can make our own rules because this is the 20th century and wedont need any fiary tells to tell us what to do. Everybody knows how to be good, and if someone meesses up bad then we put them in jail to rot forever! We now know how to go to space, and we know how to use the internet, and we knkow how to fly in the air, and we know how to cure diseases, and we know all that. What does people still talk about JESUS? WHO IS JESUS!? I am a proud atheist because i dont need anybody to tell me what to do! You hear!? I dont need it! why dont yall get some books on atheistism so you can know why i'm right and your wrong?!

Wow! Are you ever clouded! Yes, please do look up the facts. There is more evidence that Jesus existed than there is that Ceasar Augustus existed. If you are going to be an atheist, at least hold to your convictions in view of the facts, not some fiction that you purport.

    • seanhowe

Hilarious 20th century comment. You are one edumucated dude (or dudette). Well, Jesus did exist. Whether you want to argue if he was the savior or a lunatic, that is another argument.

It's all by faith brother, and your religion requires faith too. I hope (or pray) it turns out for you. The death bed is a lonely place and we all end up there at one time (and exactly one time) in our life.

Blessed are those that believe yet have not seen.

    • Jeffrey

actually.. every archeological find ever found..proves the bible correct.. as for proof of Jesus.. the records of His crucifixion can even be found in the roman logs.. there is no such thing as an athiest .. everyone knows that God exists.. they are simply people that hate God and have turned their back on Him.. turn around and you will find He is still there waiting for you... He sent His Son to save the world.. not condemn it. =) be blessed.

      June 14, 2011 at 5:34 pm |

@Jeffrey- There are people who are atheists. And not all Hate God, actually none do. To hate something would imply believing or knowing it was their. If you want to believe in God go ahead, keep him in your heart and out of politics and schools.

It's not about "trying Jesus" like "we'll see if he works." It's about "needing Jesus" at our very core. Mohler is getting at the fact that BIBLICAL christianity is exclusive. The only way, regardless of who likes it or not, Jew, Muslim, and Nominal Christian alike. Admiral, how is it you can say he's never done us any good when you don't know Him or us?
