Top evangelical to Anthony Weiner: Try JesusBy Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor (CNN) - One of the nation’s most prominent evangelicals has entered the debate over whether Anthony Weiner will benefit from therapy, encouraging the embattled Jewish New York congressman to try Jesus instead. Albert Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, tweeted this message of the weekend: “Dear Congressman Weiner: There is no effective ‘treatment’ for sin. Only atonement, found only in Jesus Christ." The tweet set some tongues a wagging, especially because Weiner is Jewish. USA Today said the remark echoed Fox News' Brit Hume comment that golfer Tiger Woods, a Buddhist, should try Christianity after he became embroiled in a sex scandal last year. Mohler, who leads the flagship school of the Southern Baptist Convention - the nation's largest evangelical denomination - took to his blog Tuesday to defend himself amid the controversy, noting that his tweet “never mentioned Judaism.” “Rep. Weiner’s problem has to do with the fact that he is a sinner, like every other human being, regardless of religious faith or affiliation,” Mohler wrote. “Christians — at least those who hold to biblical and orthodox Christianity — believe that salvation is found through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and in him alone.” Mohler called the controversy over his tweet “another sign of how politically incorrect biblical Christianity is becoming in our times.” What do you think? Is Mohler simply stating Christian doctrine? Or is it improper to suggest that members of other religious traditions who are facing crises try Jesus? |

I have 'tried' Jesus and after over 7,000 years I am ready to convict him. He was the snake in Eden, selling fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, bringing death to all mankind and did other crap even before then. He instigated Abel's attack on the Goddess Lilith and the framing of Cain for his own murder, causing the tree of life to be thrown out of Eden along with Cain. Abel became Abraham and then Moses and then Dick(head) Chaney!
We all know that Christians never get caught with their pants down.
Yeah, because Jesus worked so well for Ted Haggard and Jim Baker and Jimmy Swaggart and a host of others. The Southern Baptists want this country as free of Jews as skinheads do. They just put it in terms of conversion and Jews returning to Israel so the end of the world will come and we'll either convert or die. They even picked Jewish holy days as the perfect time to knock on our doors and try to "save" us. The only thing I need saving from are these self-proclaimed "good Christians." This is an insult to any real Christian but my family and friends who are real Christians don't tell everyone they are like this bigoted creep. They also don't believe the survival of their faith depends upon the extinction of mine.
Ummmmmm........................... Mr. Weiner is Jewish–we all know–We have all seen his penis, Newt, Jimmie Swaggart, Tim Haggart..these are all christians who had weenie problems and no one ever suggested they change their religion. Tend to your own fallen flock–there are plenty to keep you busy.
Clown is simply cashing in on someone else's problems to make sure his own name stays in the news. Like a cheap insurance salesman, no opportunity to push the "product" will escqpe his efforts.
I respectfully submit that Representative Weiner and others dealing with life's challenges, mainly sin, not "try Jesus", but TRUST Jesus.
Just like trusting Jesus helped out Eddie Long, Catholic priests, Jimmy Swaggart, Ted Haggard, Billy James Hargis, and the million other blowhards for Christ.
Biblical Christianity is becoming politically incorrect? Did anyone else react to this revelation with a hearty, "About damn time!!"?
There is a God but not the god in the bible. The god and angels of the bible are aliens who will be returning to Earth on 12/21/2012. All you have to do is read the bible with an open mind and you can tell that the stories in the bible were man's way of describing and explaining extraterrestrial events that they could not understand.
I am pretty sure Jesus is not Weiner's type.
for those of you unaware, Jesus never called anyone a sinner. the closest He came to that label was telling certain people that their sins had been forgiven. If one desires to follow Jesus, then do not place labels on people ! ! !
I'm pretty sure there's been LOTS of Christian polticians caught with their pants down, so it wasn't the cure for them. You don't have to be Christian to have ethics and morals.
try god and not Jesus, if god worked for us religious Jesus for thousands of years without believing in Jesus, he needs god
Guys like Weiner do not need to "try Jesus" because, despite their man-whoring around, they know they will somehow charm or buy enough people off to stay in power and luxury. There are no penalties for members of Congress, has no one learned this? He is not sorry, he is sorry that he got caught. There is a huge difference. No penalty, no true remorse= no need for anyone to "save" them. He will lay low and continue to do what he does, only more careful now not to get caught....
As far as reality goes Weiner did not commit a criminal act. Perhaps he is guilty of a lack of moral judgement and a disregard for his marriage vows but since when did immoral but non-criminal behavior and disrespect of one's spouse require a member of Congress to quit? If it did, then a number of current members led by John McCain ought to leave right now.
@Reason & Logic : Nicely done.
Jesus saves. Moses invests. Buddha enlightens. And Money rules.
🙂 So True:)
Or....NO
Only a person who is truly desperate to overcome sin understands what "trusting Jesus" means. I hope Mr. Weiner is willing. But if he isn't no one is going to heckle him. Mohler was doing the "just sayin'" thing. No one can force another to believe.
Jay-zuz SAVES!
That's right Weiner-boy.
Renounce the ancient faith of your ancestors and become a Christian, joining the ranks of such pillars of society as Ted Haggard, Jim Bakker, Jimmy Swaggert, Robert Tilton, John Geoghan... and the list goes on and on.
I have no problems with the principles of Christianity (love thy neighbor, do unto others..., etc), just with the hypocrites who yell the loudest that 'my way is the only way'.
Guess I'm going to burn now...
"Jesus said, "No one comes to the Father except through me". Was He a hypocrite or was He telling the truth?
Neither. A metaphor.
Neither. It's just something that someone writing in the 1st century under the name of "John" said.
Wow.
Not a hypocrite, a delusional lunatic. Do you KNOW how many "messiahs" were running around during those times, ALL proclaiming themselves to be the "son of God"?
Jesus was a jew. He is truth and when you follow Him, your life will never be the same. He offers hope for all sinners (we all are like Weiner).
You do not know me; I am not, nor have I ever been, like Weiner. Your view of mankind is pretty depressing.
Well I did send a pic of me in my boxers to Stephen Colbert that one time...
yeahhhh that's why all the "Christians" in here seem to be so happy!
Btw, the concept of sin is a way for the Church to control the masses.
I am not and have never been a "sinner". Sorry. Not falling for that guilt trip.
Another WACK-JOB Christian budding his nose in where it doesnt belong. Why on earth would a Jew want to join a religion of Christian Pedophiles, Christian wack-jobs-bigots!?!? Christians need to fix THEIR OWN HOUSE before inviting people over for "dinner".
Christians do not claim to be sin-free. Read Mohler's reply carefully. Jesus Christ took the punishment for our sins, and gives His Spirit to make us different. Do we still sin? Sure. But we hope in Him Who will keep us from punishment for it.
maybe the most ignorant thing I've seen on a blog about religion. Christ was sinless, and he is the only way to salvation. Just because a bunch of people who believe in Christ have sinned, does that mean Christ is not the way? Of course not, where is the logic in that? Jesus said himself that no human is good, all sinners. Actually that is all through the bible. But what God gracefully did through Jesus was give salvation to us "while we are still sinners"- Romans 5:8. Please don't keep from getting saved solely due to faulty logic.
ast....you're claiming religion and "logic" at the same time. Oh boy....
There is NOTHING logical about religion. It's actually the complete opposite.
For example, when something good happens, people praise god...when something bad happens, they say "Oh, it was god's will" yet still contend that their god is a loving god. A loving god kills a 6 year old kid with cancer??
Oh wait...I forgot...it was the 6 year old's "sinful nature" that did him in.
Logic? None!
Yes, because conservative Christianity worked so well at a keep pants on Gov. Mark Sanford and Rep. John Ensign.
weiner look into ur rich religion u where robbed by the secular American society, America has become a society void of any modesty ,and then they blame the men when the men act like animals
