Top evangelical to Anthony Weiner: Try Jesus

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - One of the nation’s most prominent evangelicals has entered the debate over whether Anthony Weiner will benefit from therapy, encouraging the embattled  Jewish New York congressman to try Jesus instead.

Albert Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, tweeted this message of the weekend: “Dear Congressman Weiner: There is no effective ‘treatment’ for sin. Only atonement, found only in Jesus Christ."

The tweet set some tongues a wagging, especially because Weiner is Jewish.

USA Today said the remark echoed Fox News' Brit Hume comment that golfer Tiger Woods, a Buddhist, should try Christianity after he became embroiled in a sex scandal last year.

Mohler, who leads the flagship school of the Southern Baptist Convention - the nation's largest evangelical denomination - took to his blog Tuesday to defend himself amid the controversy, noting that his tweet “never mentioned Judaism.”

“Rep. Weiner’s problem has to do with the fact that he is a sinner, like every other human being, regardless of religious faith or affiliation,” Mohler wrote. “Christians — at least those who hold to biblical and orthodox Christianity — believe that salvation is found through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and in him alone.”

Mohler called the controversy over his tweet “another sign of how politically incorrect biblical Christianity is becoming in our times.”

What do you think? Is Mohler simply stating Christian doctrine? Or is it improper to suggest that members of other religious traditions who are facing crises try Jesus?

Trying Jesus does not mean try a religion, it means having a personal relationship with God through jesus Christ who paid for our sins. There is no religion on earth that can forgive our sins and transform us from the inside out. Only Jesus can.

      @livpalm

You Said: "There is no religion on earth that can forgive our sins and (transform us from the inside out). 'Only Jesus' can."

That is all biased unproven assumption based solely on your 'beliefs.'

Many people 'transform' themselves all the time 'without' the help of Jesus, or any other deity.

      Respectfully,

      Peace...

Duh – you're a bright bulb. To beleive in Jesus Christ (not his real name btw) makes you a CHRIST-ian. You never saw the connection? Bet you thought your religion was named after Christmas. Go chew on some TNT. (not the cable network)

Hey Basil Smarty-Pants, what is his real name if not Jesus, and where did you get that information?

Jesus and God are not real..When more people have been saved in the name of a religion. Then I will believe that Jesus was a messiah and not some zealous politician.

They have...spiritually, eternally...but socially and here and earth as well...All of the great social programs are either Christian..(e.g. Salvation Army, World Vision, etc...) or where started by Christians in the name of Jesus..(eg. united Way)

Unless jesus and mohammed really want us to kill each other over a holy war – in that case our gods love death and bloodshed of the innocent. Not great religions in my book if thats the case

      June 14, 2011 at 6:48 pm |
    • keith

And good point basil because Jesus never said to kill anyone, he said to turn the other cheek and love enemies...He was the essence of love, peace and care of the fellow man.

then ask our recent presidents why as good christians they like killing moslems "as directed by their lord" they will say? a bit hypocritical I say – that people invoke jesus whenever they want to hurt someone else. Thats the disappointment of all religions i'm afraid.

We are surrounded by idiots. Everyone has a soul. We are made up of energy which can neither be destroyed nor created. when we die our energy becomes part off the universe. so ya i am sorry to all you that wasted your time. Science explains all. but Quantum mechanics and theoretical physics dont matter .

@ Michael religiosity without spirituality is useless, so that is terrible if you have bumped into those people, and united way is funded by individuals not the state...regardless, it was founded by Christian pastors...

@Basil – humans are deeply distorted, Gandhi said, " i like Christ, its your Christians I do not like" Don't look at people to judge Christ, if people truly followed the teachings of Christ there would be no war, but ultimate peace and love for all.

I still don't think he should have to resign over this. A politician farts during an interview and the mass of stupid people watching the news screams "OMGZ HE SHOULD RESIGN." It's getting ridiculous. Did Clinton step down? No. Hell, Ted Kennedy killed a woman and he was still a senator.

What is the writer of this article, Dan Gilgoff, doing as a "Religion Editor," if he is this oblivious of the words of Scripture and the words of Jesus? Has He read the Bible??? Of course, Dr. Mohler is stating Christian doctrine!!! What planet is CNN on? If there is anything clear in Scripture it is the fact that Jesus is the only way of salvation. How is it improper of Dr. Mohler to call Rep. Weiner to Jesus, when this is precisely what Jesus expects His disciples to do??? Wake up, Gilgoff and CNN and try actually reading the Gospels. This is kind of article screams ignorance, not Al Mohler's comments. Unbelievable.

dude, that may be the point of CHRISTIAN scripture but not all religious scripture says you have to follow Jesus. As a matter of fact, the old testament (the bible Jesus subscribed to) doesn't say you have to go through an intermediary like Jesus to know G-d

Jesus and God should be tried for war crimes. Just like Bush Jr. Weiner needs to be tried for being a total stud. The only treatment he should seek is re-election for his erection!

Heard of a Messianic Jew? One who believes Christ IS the Messiah? It doesn't matter if you believe or not – the truth IS Jesus.

    June 14, 2011 at 6:36 pm |
    • mike

A messianic Jew is no longer Jewish. Jews do ot believe Jesus was the Messiah or the Son of G-d. A Meesianic Jew does. By definition, they are not Jewish. And calling on a non-Christian to go to Jesus for salvation is insulting, to say the least. Religion has no real place in this debate. Rep Weiner has exhibited grossly poor judgement, and no sense of morals according to American standards, which includes, but is not limited to, religious standards. The religious zealots should stay out of this – you only exacerbate the problem.

  13. Chris

The Christian leader is very wise. The fear of God is trully the beginning of wisdom. Once you know the truth, there is no other solution but the free gift of salvation. But to understand this is to read the Bible with an open heart and open mind – asking God to take away your harden heart. If this is done with true sincerity, the truth will be revealed and understanding will enter your heart and mind. Other than that, it will sound foolish and mocked. We live in a day where clearly man counts on his own understanding and the moral fiber of our world is deteriatinig. Not much is sacred anymore and God has been thrown out of most of our public offices, schools and monuments. We have fallen away from our Creator and giving advice to this congressmen is really all there is left for him. He is no worse than any of us – he is a sinner. This could be the greatest thing that has ever happened to him if he moves in the direction of our Father and accept the free gift His Son has offered us. Sound like a bunch of religous faniticism to most I understand – it once would have sounded that way to me. Until one day I asked God if he was real and to help me make sense out of his Word – then he became very real and his Word became alive in me. He then revealed all my sin and I became disgusted by the very sin nature that brought me a false sense of joy. It's the truth – no lie – He fogives and brings you true joy – just need to turn to Him.

To suggest you know there is no God or Jesus is to suggest that you know everything. If you think about that you may come to th conclusion that you don't know everything – presuppositions have hurt this world from the real truth. Don't have to turn into a religious fanatic as perhaps (I could be wrong on how you trully feel) you may feel about people of faith – just have to understand that you don't know everything and ask for the truth with an open heart.

      @Chris

      Hey -Chris...

You Said to @michael mason..."To suggest you know there is no God or Jesus is to suggest that you know everything. If you think about that you may come to th conclusion that you don't know everything – (presuppositions) have hurt this world from (the 'real' truth)."

I'm curious... Doesn't 'your' posting *infer* the very same thing -in a way- 'structurally' that you are accusing @ 'michael mason of doing...?

When you talk of 'presuppositions', etc... and (the 'real' truth), are you not 'presupposing' and 'inferring' that 'you' 'know' what the (real truth) is...?

Please be careful when pointing out the lack of awareness in someone's 'presuppositions' when you 'possibly' haven't really taken a good hard look at your own.

      Just some thoughts.

      Respectfully,

      Peace...
