Evangelist produces ‘Real Housewives of the Bible’ DVD

By Liane Membis, CNN

There’s a new set of housewives on the block.

These women aren’t whining about fashion faux pas and socialite misgivings. Their stories are cast somewhere between the books of Genesis and Revelation.

Ty Adams, a web-based evangelist and author, is producing “The Real Housewives of the Bible,” a two-part DVD series that tracks six women dealing with the ups and downs of marriage as they strive to be good wives.

Adams said that “outrageous reality shows” like Bravo’s “The Real Housewives” series and VH1’s “Basketball Wives” inspired her to create a more wholesome version of the franchise.

“I was frustrated with what I was seeing,” she said. “A lot of society is looking towards programming to educate them on relationships and these shows haven’t effectively done that.”

“They have ruined and tainted our ability to secure good relationships and to make women into good wives,” said Adams, who is based in Detroit.

Adams has provided Christian relationship advice for nearly ten years, since she founded a production company called Heaven Enterprises in 2002. She’s the author of Single, Saved and Having Sex, has produced religious DVDs and plays and offers sex and relationship advice through a web-based column called “Ask Ty.”

Adams says the goal of her “Real Housewives” DVD, due out later this month, is helping women juxtapose real-life issues with Christian teaching. She says that teaching includes women’s obligation to attempt to sustain relationships that have endured extra-marital affairs and other hardships.

“Because we live in a media-driven society, telling these age-old stories of adultery, loneliness and longing through entertainment helps women relate,” Adams said.

Each character on the show represents a different woman from the Bible. A character based on the biblical Sarah struggles with infertility. (The biblical Sarah was barren until she reached old age).

Gold-digging women are likened to Delilah from the Book of Judges, who seduced and deceived Samson - who'd fallen in love with her - through repetitious requests.

And the show features plenty of Jezebels.

“Many single women can get a man but they can’t keep a man,” Adams said. “So many singles have been in girlfriend status for so long that they only understand that mentality. They don’t know what it takes to be a good wife in order to sustain a relationship and some parts of society promotes that.”

There are so many haters of God in America today. Any mention of the God, Jesus Christ, or the Bible in America today instantly draws much hatred. It doesn't matter weather you believe in God or not, He's still God and He's still in control!!! Amen!!

Amen. God is always in control. Through his Son Jesus Christ. I am a Christian and I love it.

" still god and he's still in control" If thats what you want to believe, just don't expect me to dumb down and go for that

If God is in control he/she/it is doing a really bad job.

@Carlton you're right. Instant disagreement without at least the same demand for evidence that is expected of Christianity.
I think the very nature of an article about a TV show in light of a media age where virtual anythings in hi definition leads to a question about there are absolutes is quite hilariuous.

I'd hate to see what the comments would be if an article about C-span was written.

Making a mockery of the Bible is appropriate since it is fiction. Make fun of it why not? Everyone is laughing. If you don't believe me that is not historical attend the Princeton Theological Seminary. They are the best Christian College for religious studies.

It's just another liberal college that know nothing of true scripture.

@Julie MS: Is that because you can't be liberal and Christian, or educated and Christian? Way to stereotype and lay down those judgements.

I don't think the show will be appropriate. Also the picture of housewives of the Bible for the promo or dvd cover seem unlike women who would be into the Bible. Should be wearing skirts at least down to their knee length!

Wow. I can't wait to see that part about the daughters of Lot.

In the last days they will say God is dead. I testify that He Lives, not lived, that he speaks not spake, And the world needs him now more than ever. Hence, the appearance to Joseph Smith, who has done more except Jesus Christ for the salvation of mankind than any other man who ever lived. The battle for souls continues as an avalanche of filth comes into homes through the media daily. But the kingdom of God rolls forth and cannot be stopped.

joseph smith was a teenager with a vision of 30 wives, servants, money, power, control...he ate to many wild mushrooms that day in the woods. Mormons have done more damage to the word of God that any other pseudo-christian cult.

What did Joseph Smith do for the salvation of mankind? Did cure Cancer, Aids, hunger, war, or anything to improve the human life?

Wait you are correct he did pretty much the same things Jesus did to improve human life (nothing).

I knew you were nuts when the word "spake" showed up. Spend some time getting real knowledge.

Joseph Smith? Isn't he the guy who was led to the gold plates buried in the ground by an angel to translate into the Book of Mormon? Are these amazing plates on display somewhere? Or right. The angel took the plates to heaven with him. How stupid are you?

If they even have a hope of this being a success, it would need to be reality TV just like the others...(ok, I know I'm pushing it). But I've seen enough shows "based" on the bible, if I watch the HW show then I am looking to be a little voyueristic. I'm not looking for a screenplay.

Please tell me this is a sick joke.
Pathetic. Yes, let's emulate television's lowest common denominator...

I love how all of the women on the advertising for this show are super hot. If we're going to talk about damaging the perception of women and marriage in our country, how about we start with realistic figures? Just saying..

    • Terry

That wouldn't get viewers. The women would be unattractive so who would watch?

As with most Christian-based initiatives, this one seems to subtley put women as subservient. What about how to be a good husband? Judging by the pic, these women look just like the superficial self-important trash we see on every other Real Housewives show. More copypasta for the masses.

Relax guys; it's a two-part DVD series. 'Bout time! All this other foolishment is just that -

You can't expect a journalist to know anything other than journalism. Seriously, when you study journalism in school, you really don't have time to study or understand anything else.

It's a shame that it's going straight to DVD. There are people who might benefit from catching it on television and pausing to watch it for a few minutes. The people who need it most are probably not the people who will purchase the DVD. Kudos to Ty Adams for her effort! I pray that it touches hearts and makes an impact.

Marriage is nothing but a financial contract which is, thank gods, rapidly becoming obsolete. You can tell Ty Adams that the TV shows are fictional entertainment only and should not be viewed as instructional. No need to get all up with righteous indignation about a stupid TV show. The bible is fiction as well and contains far more questionable behavior than any reality show.. It's not really a good book at all IMO.

Ho-hum. The bible is such a waste of time.

Are you freakin' kidding me??? First of all, this isn't news! Next, the bible is a novel, nothing more. Next, don't we have enough "reality" tv shows crowding the channels? This really kind of disgusts me. If one wants to read their bible and fantasize about what life was like then, fine....I'm all for that freedom...but why put this crap on television!??

    I would watch it.

I agree with the logo comment, won't they be sued?

A Christian version? really? let's just see how "Christian" there gonna be in front of the camera. are they gonna show their "saved" side or their real side? let's just see.

In reality, Delilah was not after Samuel but Samson!

    July 5, 2011 at 12:34 pm |
    • ecarlson

Nor was Delilah anyone's wife – she was simply someone whom Samson fancied.

JUST PLAIN STUPID! The fact that it's going straight to DVD should be the clue right there as to how "good" it's going to be.

    July 5, 2011 at 12:32 pm |
    • Mark

It's not about how "good" it is as to the reason it's going straight to DVD. It's about how many people will support this as actual programming.
