Why can't anyone who thinks Bill is a dick spell common words? Contractions and plurals must only be taught in Left-leaning schools of thought and action! IMHO, Bill used to be a whole lot funnier...then he took the moral and political highground and turned one sided and mean spirited...not that funny.

The fact that we're all still so intellectually limited to be talking about God or no God really shows we've advanced very little in thousands of years. Read Einstein's theory of relativity, quantum mechanics and String theory, and you'll quickly realize we are all operating like 5 year olds believing in Santa Claus. The concept of God and Heaven is all we can muster, but its mathematically very likely that creation and afterlife are far far different than what we are able to comprehend. If we could just allow the scientists and physicists to explore these possibilities without fear of religious nuts, we might get a little closer to the truth some day.

For someone who claims to not think about religion much he sure spends a lot of riducuiling it. Let people believe as they will, be it Athiest, Muslim or Christian. Ridculing people because of their beleifs as Bill Maher does is just hurtful and mean spirited. Our world would be a better place if everyone could just be repectful of others.

wow... and if the streets were paved with gold there would be no problems either. his entire point is that religion causes all of this uneccessary hatred, and like it or not, hes right.

No kidding, he thinks about it so little, he actually made a motion picture mocking it.

I don't understand why people are offended that other people don't believe in God. I've never declared myself an athiest because like he said, "we just don't know." But the truth is I'm not religious. It does not cross my mind and I certainly don't base my decisions on the opinion of a "higher power" that may not exsist. Bill is merely being honest about his opinion on religion. People in general need to lay off those aren't religious. Period.

    • 7od

people are offended because by saying there may not be a god, you're saying that they might have wasted a lot of time and money.

    • lisa

No one has a chance to "lay off" of Bill Maher. He constantly tells EVERYONE he's an atheist. We get it. Why don't you ask him to "lay off" those of us who do believe in something more than selling books.

Bill doesn't think too much about religion? This is a guy who made a movie about religion and talk about it every chance he gets on his show. I guess he talks about it...but doesn't think about it.

Atheism is the laziest religion of no God...but rather of man or maybe Satan as well since his main purpose was not to have mankind worship him but rather his intentions were to get mankind not to believe or to worship God the only...by spreading disbeliefs and false religions....

so lack of a religion is a religion now? what is your hair color if you're bald?

If atheism is a religion than NOT collecting stamps is a hobby. get over yourself. Most people thought the world was flat as well and that was more believable than this stuff about wizardry in the sky. If my atheism bothers you, that is your problem not mine.

Lazy? Guilty as charged! As an atheist, I gladly admit that not having to bloody your forehead in prayer and not having to put down sunday paper and a cup of coffee to drag myself to church are among lesser but still enjoyable perks of being an atheist.

    • Graybeard

If one doesn't believe in God, then one won't believe in Satan, since they are both concepts founded in religion and both should be questioned.

Religion is the Opiate of the masses.......... put in place to control man and create/retain power for the Clergy.
That goal/premise has not really changed over the years.
Look at all the atrocities committed on "behalf" or at the behest of Religion.... Christian and others

Part of the debate is how religious-minded people ironically believe their religion is the ONLY correct one – all other religions are false / sub-standard, which is ironic. Christians routinely outline that Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Pagan, Mayan, Pharonic Egyptian, Celtic, Greek, Norse gods are all myths, however their god is real. suuuure...

I don't believe in God, however I respect other people's rights to believe as they see fit – as long as they don't push their lifestyle and beliefs on me, as I don't try to push mine on them. Live and let live.

Bill Maher comments on the things we all experience. I'm amused that right-wingers listen to Rupert Murdoch's Faux News and expect Bill Maher to be a serious journalist. He comments on religion because it's an enormously evil force in the world. People are dying at this very moment over mythology. A lot of us who were passive about religion a few years ago have now had enough! Evangelical religion is tax-exempt bigotry and the sooner mankind evolves away from it's "fables and myths" (Thomas Jefferson's words) the sooner we'll develop the capability to live in harmony. Bill Maher speaks up because the rights of atheists are continually assaulted by Christians who seem dedicated to a Theoracy run by narrow-minded old white people. Enough!

That is just what happens to catholics. they have no substance in their church, so what else is to be expected. it wouldn't hurt them to open the Bible and read it – all of it, not just the parts they want to.

would you and do you follow the bible to it's letter? If so, would you do such a thing as chopping off your sons hand if he was a thief? You religious fools need to get a grip on REALITY! Nothing in history has caused more death and destruction that religion.

At least Catholics believe what you DO matters, not just what you "believe". I've been cruelly and unjustly treated by Protestants who were smugly content and without remorse because they felt they could do anything and they're still saved because they "believe" or so they told me.

      July 12, 2011 at 5:12 pm |
    • Bearin' Down

@shawn: Although religion has been invoked in the name of the death and destruction, religion has not been the reason for the death and destruction. Instead, it is greed, envy, pride, whatever. Claiming that it is religion that caused this would be the same as arguing that it was Atheists who decided to slaughter 12 million Jews OR Stalin was advancing his atheists beliefs when he slaughtered millions of Russians. BUT, common sense dictates that these are not the ACTUAL reasons, just reasons that someone was trying to use to justify themselves or gain positive public opinion.
