Amid Bachmann controversy, many Christians cool to conversion therapy for gays

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - When presidential candidate Michele Bachmann’s husband, Marcus, addressed accusations that his Christian counseling business encourages homosexual clients to try to change their sexual orientation, he appeared to play down the role of so-called conversion therapy at his clinics.

"Is it a remedy form that I typically would use?” Bachmann told Minnesota’s Star Tribune newspaper. “It is at the client's discretion.

"We don't have an agenda or a philosophy of trying to change someone," Bachmann said, noting that such therapy was not a focus of his two clinics.

Michele Bachmann officially quits her church

Bachmann’s seeming ambivalence about conversion therapy - sometimes called reparative therapy - after a week’s worth of news stories that raised questions about whether his clinics promote the practice may illustrate a broader trend in the conservative Christian subculture.

While many evangelicals once viewed conversion therapy as key way to deal with homosexuality, many of the religious movement's leaders and organizations have cooled to the practice in recent years, as more science suggests that homosexuality may be innate and as new therapeutic approaches have emerged.

“Evangelicals, in quiet ways, are shifting to this position to where there is just not a lot of support for the change paradigm,” said Warren Throckmorton, an influential voice in the world of Christian counseling, referring to so-called change therapy.

“In the late 1990s, the debate was clearly, ‘Could gays change from being gay?’ and the focus was on orientation, and it was a big part of politics,” said Throckmorton, an associate professor of psychology at Grove City College, an evangelical school in Pennsylvania.

One sign of that shift, Throckmorton says, is the influential evangelical group Focus on the Family’s 2009 decision to stop funding a program teaching that “transformation is possible for those unhappy with same-sex attractions." (Focus, which said the move was due partly to financial pressures, handed the program off to another Christian group.)

The head of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, meanwhile, a leading conservative Christian, has recently chided some evangelicals for characterizing homosexuality as a choice that’s relatively easy to change.

“We have spoken carelessly and unknowledgeably in the past to just say, ‘Just change. Just decide right now your pattern of attraction is not homosexual but heterosexual,’ ” Southern Baptist Theological Seminary President Al Mohler said. "We have to know better.”

“We understand that sexual attraction and a profile of someone’s sexuality is a complex of factors, some of which are certainly not chosen,” he continued. “It’s not just a matter of choice. It’s not something that’s turned on or turned off.”

Exodus International, the national Christian organization that promotes "freedom from homosexuality through the power of Jesus Christ," has de-emphasized conversion therapy in recent years as more of the counselors in its network have abandoned the practice.

“In the 1980s and '90s, the counseling emphasis was heavier than it was today,” said Alan Chambers, the president of Exodus. “Transformation in Christ is possible, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that we will never be tempted or completely move beyond a certain struggle that we might have.

“But we can live through the filter of our faith and abide by that most, and leave behind all sorts of things that have power of us,” said Chambers, who once identified as gay but who says he no longer does.

Most conservative Christians point to biblical passages that condemn homosexuality and believe the Bible teaches that sex is to be reserved for married men and women.

The American Psychological Association adopted a resolution condemning conversion therapy in 2009, saying that “mental health professionals should avoid telling clients that they can change their sexual orientation through therapy or other treatments.”

But the same resolution also encouraged therapists to consider the religious beliefs of clients who say such beliefs are important to their views of homosexuality.

Some Christian counselors have moved away from reparative therapy and have adopted a therapeutic approach that Throckmorton describes as a “congruence paradigm.” The model encourages counselors to appreciate a client’s wishes to harmonize their values, often shaped by religion, and their sexuality.

Under the congruence approach, a religious person who considers homosexuality sinful could attempt to square their beliefs and sexuality by trying to remain celibate. A bisexual client who perceives a similar conflict could try to focus on heterosexual relationships.

But under the congruence model, it’s up to the client - not the therapist - to decide how to view his or her sexual orientation. “If they say 'I think being gay is OK and it’s what I want to pursue,' we’ll work with them to do that, too,” said Throckmorton.

Evangelical re-examination of conversion therapy is part of a larger conversation under way among conservative Christians on how to respond to homosexuality at a time when more gay people are coming out, when there's a new awareness of the bullying that many young gay people face and when the gay rights movement is making some big strides, including, in some states, legalized gay marriage.

“We’re silly to think that there are not gays coming to church, part of our congregations,” said Marcus Yoars, the editor of Charisma, a popular Christian magazine. “It’s the elephant in the room. Its ridiculous that we can’t address it in a manner of love first, which doesn’t mean watering down biblical teaching.”

For the first time in years, Charisma put the issue of homosexuality on the cover of its magazine for the July issue, in a package that includes a story of a woman who says she was “rescued from lesbianism.”

But Yoars said that conversion therapy should be seen as only a small part of the Christian response to homosexuality.

“We have to realize that reparative therapy is a fraction of what’s out there, especially in Christian counseling,” he said. “When it’s reduced to sound bites, it gives (the therapy) a bad rap and falls into the stereotype of all Christians feeling that this kind of therapy is what all Christian counselors should use.”

Another factor behind the new evangelical conversation around homosexuality and conversion therapy is a generational shift on attitudes toward the issues. Recent polls show that young evangelicals are much more supportive of rights for gay partners than their parents are, even as they mirror their parents' opposition to abortion.

"Retaining young people is crucial, and a more accepting generation will not tolerate business as usual when it comes to the debate over homosexuality," wrote Jonathan Merritt, a young evangelical leader, in a recent opinion piece. "Pastors need not compromise their convictions, but they can expect congregants to call for a more accepting, forgiving message – a more Christian message.

"If Christian leaders can’t make that transition – and quickly – instead of an awakening," Merritt wrote in the Christian Science Monitor, "evangelicals may be facing an exodus."

Romans 1:26,27. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet (Romans 1:26,27).

For a better understanding of the above scriptural reference we invite you to read the latest entry of the Current Events page on our website http://www.aworlddeceived.ca

All of the other pages and articles on the website explain how this whole world has been deceived as confirmed by the Word of God in Revelation 12:9. The Bible is true in all things and is the discerner of every thought and the intent of the heart (Hebrews 5:12).

    In Summary:

Ho*mose#xuality is a personal choice based on a person’s free will. Things like Reparative Therapy are an abomination and are according to man’s wisdom (1 Cor. 2:4-13). However, there is another choice and all a person requires to do is turn to the right source (spirit) and belief in the Only Physician that is able to provide a Cure (Matthew 9:12; Mark 2:17; Luke 5:31).

To repent means to turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan (spirit of man) unto God (Acts 26:18) and through the Baptism of Repentance (Mark 1:4) God will bring about the conversion and transformation of spirits and bring healing to all those that belief.

No...it's not a choice at all. Your 'God' is the one who is responsible for this. Trust me. I have been gay all my life, in the closet, and hate every minute of it. I would give anything to not be this way but unfortunately, that will never happen. No matter how I much I have 'prayed' to that falsehood in the sky, I have never gotten any closer to being straight. You guys go on and on about God and how powerful and loving he is...yet, he is completely powerless with just about everything and allows suffering across all spectrum's of life. If God exists...he doesn't deserve praise of any kind.

I certainly don't need to read all the posts here after reading just a few. It's the same ole same ole black and white I will take my side u take urs. Bottom line is this.... If you haven't lived this you don't know.

Period. I don't and won't argue with people who think they know what its like to adore amd love Jesus Christ while also being attracted to men. I won't and believe anyone who does is doing the same as flushing cash down a toilet.

This I do know. Jesus is Lord. This crap confuses people who are truly struggling to live authentic, true lives. I have too many friends so angry and hurt by church condemnation they won't even take the time to search and.examine if they truly are gay or if there is another issue at hand.

All the hate, vile judgements, harsh words....scar. Worse yet, if you are a Christian who acts and says those things, you will answer one day. Not to anyone but Christ. You will.

That's the truth. Period. I shutter to think what it would be like to stand judgement and face the results of angry, stupidity done in the name of the very man you claim to serve and represent... All while bowing and claiming He was Lord of your life.

Christians will fight to keep the truth and moral purity until the end of the world. American Christians – still the strong hope of the world. The history will record their bravery in the midst of the American immoral madness. If America continues its hatred towards God, divine punishment on the America soil is inevitable – a pattern in the history. America is not immune.

In consideration of the subject headline we think it is appropriate to share with you The Story of Lot.

Many people that have placed comments on the CNN Belief Blog have used the story of Lot and his family to justify their deceitful and misleading hypothesis, while in truth it is a story of great spiritual significance and teaching. The Bible is not a Story Book and cannot be understood by the natural man as it is spiritually discerned (1 Cor. 2:14). Abraham and his nephew Lot were considered righteous in God’s eyes, while mankind prefers to follow the natural spirit of darkness (John 3:19) and for this reason remains separated from God.

The City of Ur in Babylonia had been a godless place, but Sodom was even worse. Its people thought of nothing but their own pleasures and the pursuit of wealth. The neighboring town of Gomorrah was equally bad and both cities were known for the evil deeds of their inhabitants. These two cities lay in the vale of Siddim, near an inlet called the Dead Sea, or the Salt Sea.

They were a long-time enemy of the king of Elam and when the people of the cities rebelled, the conquering soldiers of king Elam looted the cities and took Lot, Abraham’s nephew, captive along with all Lot’s goods and many other men and women they had taken for their slaves. Abraham, along with Lot lived during the days of the Patriarchs and they were considered righteous in God’s eyes.

After one man had escaped from the enemy camp, Abraham assembled a small army and at a place called Dan he launched a swift attack. It was so sudden and so unexpected, that the enemy broke camp and ran and Abraham rescued all the captives and their stolen possessions.

But though Abraham could have made himself a very rich man, by keeping the goods he had recovered, he would take no reward. Instead, he returned the goods to the people and the people to their cities, accepting nothing in return but the food he needed for his tiny army. Lot and his family went back to the City of Sodom, which became no less wicked for having been saved by Abraham; and Abraham went back to his tent home on the plain of Mamre.

God was well pleased with Abraham and made the promise that he would become a great nation and that he would teach his children and his children’s children to be righteous and keep the ways of the Lord.

Now God had revealed to Abraham that he would destroy Sodom and Gomorrah for their wickedness but Abraham was concerned for those that did not deserve to die. So he challenged God over the number of righteous people he would be able to find, in order that God would not destroy the cities. Even if Abraham would be able to find ten righteous people (believers) God promised to save the city. But Abraham went to the place of his tents to think of the fate of Sodom and his brother’s son and could only hope that the angels of the Lord would find ten good men in the midst of all their wickedness, so that they and their city could be saved.

Of all the five cities in the vale of Siddim, the city of Sodom and the neighboring town of Gomorrah were the worst in sinfulness. Yet Lot had freely chosen to make the city of Sodom his home. The people of Sodom had enough respect for Lot to allow him to become a great man in their city, and as time passed they became to regard him as one of their judges or wise men.

On the evening of the day during which Abraham had been visited by the two angels and the Lord, Lot was sitting in his usual place near the gate of Sodom, when two strangers (angels) approached and entered through the gate. Lot knew how the people of Sodom were used to treating strangers and instead of offering food and rest would offer brutality and cruel harm. So Lot offered them to come into his house but the angels insisted they spend the night in the street.

But Lot knew that the strangers (angels) would not be safe in the streets and eventually they turned into his house. Now before they could lie down there came a loud knocking at the door. The word of Lot’s two visitors had spread, and the people of Sodom wanted to amuse themselves by tormenting the two strangers. Young and old, and from every quarter of the city, they swarmed around Lot’s house and demanded that he let them in or turn his guests over to them so they could have their fun.

And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him. He was so appalled by the behavior of the men of Sodom and said to them: I pray you brethren, do not so wickedly. Behold now, I have two daughters, which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof. But Lot was fully aware of the intentions of the men of Sodom and knew full well that they were not interested in his daughters or any other members of his family, as they were determined to amuse themselves with the strangers.

The people crowded rudely against Lot and almost succeeded by breaking down the door. But the two men inside quickly reached out their hands and dragged Lot into the house with them and shut the door. And they smote the men that were at the door with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

Lot was asked by the angels if he had any sons in law, sons and daughters in the city and when he spoke to his sons-in-law, he could not make them understand that Sodom would be destroyed. And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife and two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.

After God had shown Lot the small city of Zoar where he was to escape, He overthrew the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the city and that which grew upon the ground.

They had been informed not to look back but Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. Lot and his two daughters eventually went up into the mountain. Lot’s older daughter had a son whom she called Moab, who became the father of the Moabites; and Lot’s younger daughter bore a son called Ben-Ammi, whose descendants were the Ammonites.

When we started on our journey of Repentance (Mark 1:4) and Transformation (Romans 12:2) twenty six years ago, we were hungry for the truth and during our search for the true and living God, He had taught us about the meaning of an angel and He did send us an angel as confirmation. It is the Spirit of God taking on a human body and He revealed to us that they can come and go as directed by God.

A good example is the angel of the Lord that opened the prison doors by night as recorded in Acts 5:19. Also, the angel of the Lord that came upon Peter, while he was in prison and the chains fell off his hands as recorded in Acts 12:7.

The article by Jonathan Dudley to promote a certain lifestyle and see people respond to it, using the very Word of God, which they cannot understand (1 Cor. 2:14) is an abomination. They are separated from God and do not represent those that are inside Lot’s house but rather those that are rudely crowding on the outside and who were smitten with blindness. The people today have received even a worse punishment called “Spiritual Blindness”.

And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness (2 Thess. 2:11,12).

For a better understanding what mankind must do to be able to stand with Lot’s family on the inside of his house with the angels of God, what it means to Repent and what you must do to able to understand the Bible, we invite you to read all the pages and articles of our website. You can locate it by entering “a world deceived” on Google. It is easy to find as it has been the number one listing for the last five years out of more than 10 million listings.

All of the other pages and articles on our website explain how this whole world has been deceived as confirmed in Revelation 12:9 and the Bible is true, it is just that mankind in the natural state is not able to understand it as it is spiritually discerned: meaning to be able to discern between darkness and light (1 Cor. 2:14,15). The Bible is the discerner of every thought and the intent of the heart (Hebrews 5:12).

Saving Christians like AvdBerg from the Infamous Resurrection Con:

From that famous passage: In 1 Corinthians 15 St. Paul reasoned, "If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith."

Even now Catholic/Christian professors of theology are questioning the bodily resurrection of the simple, preacher man aka Jesus.

      To wit;

From a major Catholic university's theology professor’s grad school white-board notes:

"Heaven is a Spirit state or spiritual reality of union with God in love, without earthly – earth bound distractions.
Jesus and Mary's bodies are therefore not in Heaven.

Most believe that it to mean that the personal spiritual self that survives death is in continuity with the self we were while living on earth as an embodied person.

Again, the physical Resurrection (meaning a resuscitated corpse returning to life), Ascension (of Jesus' crucified corpse), and Assumption (Mary's corpse) into heaven did not take place.

The Ascension symbolizes the end of Jesus' earthly ministry and the beginning of the Church.

Only Luke's Gospel records it. The Assumption ties Jesus' mission to Pentecost and missionary activity of Jesus' followers The Assumption has multiple layers of symbolism, some are related to Mary's special role as "Christ bearer" (theotokos). It does not seem fitting that Mary, the body of Jesus' Virgin-Mother (another biblically based symbol found in Luke 1) would be derived by worms upon her death. Mary's assumption also shows God's positive regard, not only for Christ's male body, but also for female bodies." "

"In three controversial Wednesday Audiences, Pope John Paul II pointed out that the essential characteristic of heaven, hell or purgatory is that they are states of being of a spirit (angel/demon) or human soul, rather than places, as commonly perceived and represented in human language. This language of place is, according to the Pope, inadequate to describe the realities involved, since it is tied to the temporal order in which this world and we exist. In this he is applying the philosophical categories used by the Church in her theology and saying what St. Thomas Aquinas said long before him."

With respect to rising from the dead, we also have this account:

o An added note: As per R.B. Stewart in his introduction to the recent book, The Resurrection of Jesus, Crossan and Wright in Dialogue,
      o p.4
o "Reimarus (1774-1778) posits that Jesus became sidetracked by embracing a political position, sought to force God's hand and that he died alone deserted by his disciples. What began as a call for repentance ended up as a misguided attempt to usher in the earthly political kingdom of God. After Jesus' failure and death, his disciples stole his body and declared his resurrection in order to maintain their financial security and ensure themselves some standing."
      o p.168. by Ted Peters:
Even so, asking historical questions is our responsibility. Did Jesus really rise from the tomb? Is it necessary to have been raised from the tomb and to appear to his disciples in order to explain the rise of early church and the transcription of the bible? Crossan answers no, Wright answers, yes. "

o So where are the bones"? As per Professor Crossan's analyses in his many books, the body of Jesus would have ended up in the mass graves of the crucified, eaten by wild dogs, covered with lime in a shallow grave, or under a pile of stones.

Jesus died 2K yrs ago and is still dead ... and will stay that way. The rest is ancient myth from the whacks of the middle east. Look at the peoples of the middle east today ... they haven't changed in over 2K yrs ... and these sand rats started the whole myth ... then corrupt popes changed the bible for centuries. It's all BS and myth.. just pretend stuff to control people.

      Wow, Gary...sandrats?

And I bet you've referred to Christians as bigots, too. Haven't you?

We welcome you to today's circus show. Similiar to the old days of Roman Empire. The gays and LIBs are trying to feed the Christians to the lions. Talking about who's in the dark ages. Also, crucifiction was used by Romans. Did you want to start this in USA? Seems like that is the trend based upon the blogs.

Now that is just foolish. The g@y and lesbi@n community is not trying to undo Christianity. Stop throwing statements like that around. Besides, we Christians have already undone much of Christianity by ourselves, no help needed.

What planet have you been visiting? Of course the agenda of gays and libs are to end GOD in this country. They've killed off GOD in our schools, try to in our Pledge, off our money, and in almost every public sector there is. Don't believe me, go over to your local school, paid for by your hard earned tax dollars with "In GOD we Trust" on it, and try to tell anyone about Jesus, lead a student prayer in a class room, where a tee shirt with a slogan that reflects your belief in our Savour, and tell me what happens. Be very careful who you align yourself with, because satan is the father of lies. And if you are not saved (child of GOD), then you are a child of satan. No middle ground. Hot or Cold, for or againts, those are GOD's own words.

I'd like to know where you heard GOD say these words..So many people have this strange notion that God just sat down, and wrote the Bible himself. Incase this is the first time you are realizing this, people wrote the Bible, therefore the Bible is prone to human error, no matter how many times it is re-written or translated. God wrote nothing in the Bible, but rather it is a 'relgious account' of experiences. The sooner people start to realize this, the sooner we can all get along.

It's YOUR kind, WhoAreYou, that is advocating feeding folks to the lions. I wish I could say you live in the dark ages, but your insane and brutal religion isn't even that advanced! It';s forever mired in the bronze age.

By the way, WhoAreYou...people still can and still do "pray" in school. So that's a lie you've told. Schools have no more business teaching your barbaric religion than "churches" have teaching facts. Money? Your figment wasn't on it before the 50's. Guess it wasn't important before then. The Pledge? Written by a socialist, the Pledge contained no mention of your cheap mythology before 1954. Wasn't your "god" important before then?

"go over to your local school, paid for by your hard earned tax dollars with "In 'god' we Trust" on it, and try to tell anyone about "jebus", lead a student prayer in a class room, where a tee shirt with a slogan that reflects your belief in my figment, and tell me what happens"
Man, your victim mentality is in full flower, isn't it? Guess what...if you go into a classroom and try to interrupt leaqrning with your sick proselytizing, you're out of line. I'd be just as wrong if I interrupted a "church" service to teach a biology lesson. Oh, but then I actually understand right and wrong. Maybe you should investigate the difference sometime.

As to the two deities you worship, "god" and "satan"...they're really just the same dead figment. Neither one exists, nor does their gay son "jebus".

@Dave – your idea of Christianity as "brutal" shows your ignorance. Much brutality was done in God's name, but that brutality is from the "wolves in sheep's clothing"; men who use religion for their own selfish ends, most of whom probably believe in God even less than you do.

      Here's brutal for you:
If a man strikes you, turn the other cheek.
If a man sues you for his coat, give him your cloak as well.
      Blessed are the meek.
Those who live by the sword shall die by the sword.

people who do not try to live by those words are only pretend Christians.

This type of therapy is unChristian to say the least. The Bible emphasizes the fact that whole-hearted repentance and submitting your life into God's hands and asking Him to do the work in you is what it takes. If and only if you're doing it with a willing heart. No one can change who they are on their own. You may learn how to garden, but if you hate it – you'll be a poor gardener.

Just as anyone can learn to be celibate, but that doesn't make them happy singles, right?

That's what many Christians are asking gays to do, isn't it? Better to be celibate and miserable than risk God's wrath. If you believe God really prefers people to 'suffer through' being gay in this way then isn't that considering gayness to be some kind of disease, like cancer, that also has to be endured? The real drawback to being gay appears to be people's negative view of it, so the 'cure' to gayness then is to allow the person to feel good about being gay. Many Christians choose to be part of the problem, and not the cure, it seems.

So you think immorality that is promoted by the government will make a better place for all of us to live? You sound like a typical democrat.
ME has this same idea. Folks I give you an example of the Religious Taliban.
