Poll: 52 percent approve of God’s job performance

By John Blake, CNN

(CNN) - If you think voters are in cranky mood over politics, a new poll suggests that some of the dissatisfaction may run deeper.

God’s job performance has trouble measuring up to many Americans' expectations, according to a poll by Public Policy Polling, a Democratic firm based in North Carolina.

Only 52 percent of Americans approve of God’s job performance, the survey found, though just 9 percent disapprove.

The polling question that prompted this curious response was, "If God exists, do you approve or disapprove of its performance?"

"When asked to evaluate God on some of the issues it is responsible for, voters give God its best rating on creating the universe, 71-5," the polling report said. "They also approve of its handling of the animal kingdom 56-11, and even its handling of natural disasters 50-13."

Dino Grandoni cited the poll in a blog for the  Atlantic Wire:

On the bright side for the Almighty's re-election chances, God is still more popular than House Speaker John Boehner and both Republicans and Democrats in Congress, all of whom polled at 33 percent in the same poll.

Believers or not, it seems ridiculous for the public to categorically grade God like this, until you realize that it's pollsters who asked the questions in the first place

Public Policy Polling used automated telephone interviews to survey 928 American voters from July 15 to 17. The voters were represented by a mix of liberal, moderate and conservative voters. The poll's margin of error  was +/-3.2%.

lol at an industrialized nation debating the existence of an omnipotent being. Pair this up with the marriage of a prince and princess days before we killed the evil genius of the world and this thing's starting to play out like a really bad movie. Keep debating your non existent deities though, 'cause that's working out well.

So...we "rate" God's job performance now???
Hmmm...Imagine if He were to "rate" us....Thankfully He doesnt!
    He loves us unconditionally!

We must never judge God. He judges /"rates" us every day. He gives us another chance to better ourselves with every morning sunrise. Use the chance. Seize the day. Carpe Diem.

what a ridiculous poll, which only further highlights just how bad things are in this country. now we're taking polls on fictional gods, and how they are doing.

in hundreds of years to come, people are going to look back and laugh at this country, this government and the citizens.

This a rediclious article, come on give us ALL a break, God doesn't need approval. People are mear fools and are far from ideal in their character, integrety, courage, honor, and truth. You have no idea as to what God really is in power, wisdom, strengh, truth, and purpose. Drop the approval rating it does not APPLY! This is like an amebia judging a human.

Frankly, it's only by the grace of God that any of us live at all! We give God the finger then disapprove of him not catering to our childish ideas. How dumb can you be; that's right your as dumb as you can possibly be and it's by your own choice.

i think we should thank god for everything that he has given us this earth our families the means to think of our own free will its not his fault the author and the people following this cant take fault in their selves so they have to find someone to blame for mans mistakes i really think everyone should pray to god to help us keep what we have and not sit around making stupid polls and articles because they have nothing better to do im not rich by any means and could really care less about this countrys defaults as long as i have my savior family and friends ill be ok god gave me two hand two feet and wisdom to use them in being able to fend for myself and family he put us plenty to eat right here on earth with plenty of resources well we had plenty until we foolishly use them all once again mistake by man so dont hold god responsible for our mistakes

    • AreYouaBeliever

Alex, right and the rest of us believe you came from a monkey or pond slim.

A perfect GOD made man in HIS owm image and gave him free will. HIS plan wasn't to make mindless robots. And, we choose to or not to believe HIM or trust in HIS plans and ways. We choose to fall. HE didn't push us. So, we suffer the consequences of our decisions. Like you do everyday, it is just you haven't been caught and tried for your mistakes (yet).

One day, all knees will bow and all will give an account for their lives.

None of us are clean on our own. Only HE can make us pure again.

    • Created For His Glory

Alex, if you are not a believer in God, then I would not expect you to act or talk like a believer. However, if you would take enough time out of your life to look deep into nature and how it so perfectly depends upon itself to survive, you would know there must be more than evolution. If you would take enough time out of your life to look deep into you own body and person and how perfectly it depends upon air, food, and water, you would know there must be more than coincidences. If you would take enough time out of your life to look at the earth and how it so perfectly rotates and orbits around the sun, how the water evaporates into the atmosphere and then turns into rain to replentish the ground, how the seasons come and go exactly right on time every year after year, how you can be standing in Antartica and not fall off the earth, how and why there are ocean currents, and how the earth can be blanketed by such a powerful outer atmosphere that we are not crushed by the enormous opposing outerspace force then you would have to know there is more than CHANCE. If you would take a year out of your life to read a few chapters of the Bible per day so that you can see how the beginning of mankind unfolds and how things have been so arranged to bring about salvation for our eternal soul, then you can see that without being inspired by a higher being, man is not smart enough to have written the words on their own. There must be a higher power that directed those men to write the Bible, otherwise it is not possible.

Furthermore, you refer to God the same as the writer of the article as "IT". The God I worship and the God that puts breath in our nostrils is the ONE AND ONLY TRUE LIVING God, He is not an "IT" as though He is a thing. He is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He is the God that sent forth His Son Jesus to us to die on an old rugged cross, and raised again to be the ONLY Way into Heaven. He is the One that is still giving people an opportunity to believe in Him. I dont understand how all of what He has done and how He did it, but the one thing I have learned is, I dont have to understand. All I have to do is have faith. And if when this life is over and everything I have faith in is not true, then that would be ok too. At least I had faith in something and tried to live a good life. I really have not lost anything. But, if when this life is over and there truly is something about what you are now denying and you dont come to the realization that God does exist, then by what you could learn in the Bible will be a very devastating thing to happen to you. I tell you this so that you may take a little time out of your busy life to think about these things and maybe find the truth that is in the Bible and that you may open your heart and mind to something that is way beyond your or my comprehension, and that is the Love of God. Think about it. Take some time. Step back and look around. Talk to someone that you know that claims to be a Christian. Go walking in the woods or go fishing. Think about how a fish can breath air through water, but cant breath air out of water. Think about how a dog has a thick pad for a paw, or how a horse has hoofs, or how a cow has three stomachs to digest grass in one, grain in another and yet a third for metal or other hard objects, think about most animals sweat over their whole body, but a pig only sweats around their snout and why, think about how the tail of a squirrel is used as a balancing tool when jumping through the branches of a tree, or how all the birds are fed everyday and they never run out of food. Then after you have done all of this thinking, then tell me there is no God. Just remember, you have only one chance throughout all eternity to make the right decision and that one chance is your life-time. After that, its over.

      July 27, 2011 at 5:07 pm |
    • Mister Jones

@Created – First off, cows do not have three stomachs. Then only have one, but it has four compartments, which is what I think you were going for, but missed. It is a common misconception (the four stomachs, not the three. I had never heard anyone get that one wrong before). But that is not the point. You mention that you do not need to know how things work, you just need your faith. That has to be one of the dumbest comments imaginable. Yes, you really really do need to know how things work. That is how you can contribute to society. Otherwise, you are just regurgitating mental phlegm into someone elses brain. All of the physiological aspects of the animals you mentioned were brought about by evolution. That is why some dogs have thicker coats than others, etc. (that could go on for a long time). Please put your bible down for a moment and go study any science. If you knew 10% of what you know about your bible, and could transfer that to particle physics, you could work at CERN (for example) and actually do something constructive for all of us.

This is hilarious! Oh now thank goodness for articles like this. I was getting severe hives from the Breivik ones.
But how are we supposed to answer these questions? Letter grades, pass/fail, out of ten? Grade god on the creation of the universe? Well I don't exactly have another universe to compare it to... a 17 out of 36 with a margin +/- infinity. On the animal kingdom... well I'm not particularly familiar with all the animals in the animal kingdom, but good work on the sloths and platypii... they are wonderfully amusing! B+ definitely. Hmmm natural disasters... Well is that how efficient natural disasters are? Because oh wow! You get a thumbs up for Katrina! And the Ja-pan thing?! Genius! An earthquake followed by a tsunami followed by nuclear meltdown? Oh the drama, the tragedy, the complexity. He should have got an Oscar. Even though I don't know that he would technically get credit for the nuclear thing. Or are we talking how well he's protecting us? Cuz that's at best a D -. An F if you live in Haiti.
