Poll: 52 percent approve of God’s job performance

By John Blake, CNN

(CNN) - If you think voters are in cranky mood over politics, a new poll suggests that some of the dissatisfaction may run deeper.

God’s job performance has trouble measuring up to many Americans' expectations, according to a poll by Public Policy Polling, a Democratic firm based in North Carolina.

Only 52 percent of Americans approve of God’s job performance, the survey found, though just 9 percent disapprove.

The polling question that prompted this curious response was, "If God exists, do you approve or disapprove of its performance?"

"When asked to evaluate God on some of the issues it is responsible for, voters give God its best rating on creating the universe, 71-5," the polling report said. "They also approve of its handling of the animal kingdom 56-11, and even its handling of natural disasters 50-13."

Dino Grandoni cited the poll in a blog for the  Atlantic Wire:

On the bright side for the Almighty's re-election chances, God is still more popular than House Speaker John Boehner and both Republicans and Democrats in Congress, all of whom polled at 33 percent in the same poll.

Believers or not, it seems ridiculous for the public to categorically grade God like this, until you realize that it's pollsters who asked the questions in the first place

Public Policy Polling used automated telephone interviews to survey 928 American voters from July 15 to 17. The voters were represented by a mix of liberal, moderate and conservative voters. The poll's margin of error  was +/-3.2%.

I just have two questions. Who is God referring to in Gen 1:26? "Then God said, "Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness..." Who is God talking with? Why is the first commandment worded the way that it is? "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" instead of "There are no other gods.Period." If there are other gods, who are they? Is that who God was speaking with in Genesis? Just curious.

These other gods must have created the "other people" that happened to already exist for Adam & Eve's little clan to encounter when they got kicked out of the garden.

Jean, when God said 'Let Us", he was referring to all three divine beings. The Trinity was working together in the creation. God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, and those three make up one God. Since angels don't have the power to create, he was talking about all three that make up the God head to create man.

Michael Knight: See you brainwashed types just keep making it up as you go. Oh well "the Son" must have existed in the beginning of time just to make the "us" part in that verse fit, even though the Son wasn't born until several thousand years after "the creation". Pathetic try.

Michael Knight, proving once again that atheists know more about why they don't believe than believers know why they do.

The belief that Jesus has existed from the beginning of time is not something that believers have made up. Jesus says, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am." (John 8:58)

Also, John says in his Gospel-
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." (John 1)

Hamen, you are still pathetically lost. Don't you realize how EASY it is to MAKE STUFF UP afterwards to FIT what has already been? The OT had existed for thousands of years before the alleged authors of the NT so all they had to do was build on an existing tradition. Duh! Now it would have been more convincing if the OT authors had mentioned Jeezus....BY NAME of course.....but they DIDN'T. So stuff it.

A more important question than the one proffered up by this arrogant and ignorant liberal "polling" organization, would be"When God Almighty gives you/us an evaluation, what will your score be? Is your life in line with His Word? Unbelievers may rail against Him now, but some day you will need Him. When I see these things, it re-affirms two things to me: 1. God really is mercifull to tolerate such foolishness from people who claim to be wise, 2. We are nearer the end than we thought. The ugly scorn and ridicule from unbelievers is just another sign that Scripture is very much on target.

By your logic DD, a Hindu would say the same regarding your scorn of his god(s). Well, maybe not cause it's not like Hindu's are going door to door or on TV selling their religion.

Regardless, put you both together and neither one is any more convincing or has any more supporting evidence than the other.

Another attempt by main stream media to distort the omnipotent God! God is ever present with each moment waiting for you to put your pride aside and have a personal relationship w/ HIM. You attempt to become obedient to His TRUTH out of LOVE for His Mercy and Grace on the Cross. Most people are so removed from God due to selfish ambitions just like Eve that they can't sense, hear and feel the Holy Spirit. Repent so that you will not suffer eternally! Receive God's Truth and Peace!

"If he is infinitely good, what reason should we have to fear him? If his is infinitely wise, why should we have doubts concerning our future? If he knows all, why warn him of our needs and fatigue him with our prayers? If he is everywhere, why erect temples to him? If he is just, why fear that he will punish the creatures that he has filled with weakness? . . .If he is reasonable how can he be angry at the blind, to whom he has given the liberty of being unreasonable? If he is inconceivable why occupy ourselves

When the LORD your God delivers it[city] into your hand, put to the sword all the men in it. As for the women, the children, the livestock and everything else in the city, you may take these as plunder for yourselves. And you may use the plunder the LORD your God gives you from your enemies. … However, in the cities of the nations the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance do not leave alive anything that breathes. Completely destroy them

Most Christian religions do not include the Apocrypha in their copy of the Books of the Bible.

Today, Christians are not under the Law Code. The Law Cod ended with Jesus. Jesus was the fulfillment of the Law Code. See Hebrews Chapter 10. However, we do follow the Law Code in principle.

So, it is possible for one to follow God's plan, to know about God's plan, and benefit from the entire writings of the Bible, including the Hebrew Scriptures part.

Jesus said to follow the law of the old testament ALL OF IT. He also said the most difficult path is the one that leads to heaven. Pretending that the law of the old testament is no longer binding is the easy path to hell

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven."

The angry, disparaging tone of those denouncing belief in God shows these are not happy campers, and have not come up with an alternative set of humanitarian beliefs. God or no God, people generally are only happy when their lives are dedicated to a cause bigger than themselves, and when self interest does not override principle and conscience. If God does exist, it is in the tranformative power to inspire people to realize their humanity and overcome pettiness and greed.

You've seen these new devices like the Nintendo 3DS that do this thing called "Agumented Reality"? It's really cool. You hold the screen in front of you with the device's camera pointing away from you and it overlays virtual objects onto the live video. It blends the objects into the environment so well it seems like they're actually there. Belief in god is a lot like Augmented Reality.

    @Martin T
Yes, God has a plan, aka. Purpose.

"Where is this plan/purpose?" It can be found in God's Word the Bible (some people call it The Old Testament and New Testament, more accurately the Hebrew Scriptures and the Christian Greek Scriptures).
Who wrote the plan? It was written by men as they were borne along by Holy Spirit. 2 Timothy 3:16,17
Yes, it does take Faith. Hebrews 11:1 defines Faith for us.

Would you say that governments have a plan or purpose? Would you say that people even put Faith in their government? In this case, we have much evidence that such 'faith' and 'plans' are untrustworthy and unreliable. The choice is yours my friend.

(you brought up some other very interesting points- but I can't answer them all at the same time. maybe we could talk about them later?)

I'm curious. Do you include or dis-include Apocrypha in "God's plan"? Also do you follow rules of Leviticus? Do you agree with Deuteronomy 25:11-12? Deuteronomy 22:28-29? Zechariah 13:3? Exodus 21:20-21? If not, and you only follow part of the Bible are you really following "God's plan"?

      July 27, 2011 at 9:06 pm |
    • Billy

Gozer, if you read the books of the old testment starting with Isaiah GOD no longer is happy with Burnt Offering, offerings of sweet saviour, and other things that he formerly asked for. Now the New Testament, he wishes us to end our old selves and put on a new man, as explained in the Baptism.

Calling all Believers (you know who you are). Stop casting your pearls before swine. Unless someone's heart is ready to hear the truth, the comments you make fall on blind eyes and deaf ears. We don't need to defend ourselves, when the time comes the truth will defend Himself. Just continue to love all, be patient and tolerant, show kindness in every action, and God's Love and Mercy will reflect in your life and draw those who are ready to Jesus.

@Martin T...why keep arguing with people when both sides think that they are right? I believe when we die we stand before a just God will who judge us according to His Word, and whether your name is written in the Book of Life..You believe that when we die we go into nothingness..one of us is right and one of us is wrong. I would rather choose God...because if I am right then I have eternal life..if I'm wrong I have lost nothing..but if you are wrong you have lost everything.

@Magic..I guess if you pick apart my statement I did just that..but I wrote that statement not to the unbeliever but to the believer..so unless you believe the Bible that statement is lost to you.

@Heidi P: "I would rather choose God...because if I am right then I have eternal life..if I'm wrong I have lost nothing..but if you are wrong you have lost everything."

This is another tired repeti.tion of Pascal's Wager - thoroughly refuted since the 17th century (where have you been?)

      - What if the real "God" is Allah, or Vishnu, or Zeus, or any of the other of thousands which have been dreamed up over the centuries? Some of them are very jealous and vengeful and will relegate you to nasty places for not worshiping them. You'd better cover your butt by believing in ALL of them and fulfill their wishes and demands.

      - What if the real "God" prefers those who use logic and reason and punishes you as a silly sycophant?

      - What if the real "God" detests those who believe something just to cover their butts in eternity?

@ i wonder...first I wasn't talking to you..second I'll repeat what I said in my initial statement...I will not argue my belief over your belief..you believe what you believe and I believe what I believe...simple as that.

    • Martin T

Hey Magic, she got part of it right, I am both a pig and deaf. Blind... no so much....

Pascal's wager is just plain stupid. Believing in god ONLY because you are afraid of enternal damnation is foolish. Why? Because if your god is omnipotent and omniscient, he will KNOW what is in your heart and know that you only worship him out of fear. It's the same with the argument that we are only MORAL because of god, which infers that the speaker of this foolishness would be a killer, rapist, and such if they didn't believe in god. I am none of those things and I do not believe in god, so where do my morals come from?
