Obama praises American Muslims for contributions since 9/11 attacks

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - President Barack Obama spoke in stark tones Wednesday night about what he said were the positive contributions of American Muslims in the years since the September 11, 2001, attacks, in remarks that came a month before the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

“Muslim Americans were innocent passengers on those planes,” Obama said, referring to the aircraft that slammed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in the September 11 attacks, “including a young married couple looking forward to the birth of their first child."

“They were workers in the Twin Towers - Americans by birth and Americans by choice, immigrants who crossed the oceans to give their children a better life,” he continued.

Obama was speaking at a White House Iftar dinner, held to celebrate the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The White House invited Muslim families who had relatives working in the Twin Towers on 9/11 to the dinner, with the president asking guests to stand and acknowledge them on Wednesday night.

“Muslim Americans were first responders,” Obama said, recounting events of September 11, “the former police cadet who raced to the scene to help and then was lost when the towers collapsed around him; the EMTs who evacuated so many to safety; the nurse who tended to so many victims; the naval officer at the Pentagon who rushed into the flames and pulled the injured to safety.”

“On this 10th anniversary, we honor these men and women for what they are - American heroes.”

The president also thanked American Muslims for their military service during “10 hard years of war.”

At another point in his remarks, Obama noted that American Muslims serve as firefighters, police officers and counterterrorism specialists. “Make no mistake,” Obama said. “Muslim Americans help to keep us safe.”

At a time when Muslim Americans are facing stepped up scrutiny – with congressional hearings on radicalization in U.S. Muslim communities and legislatures across the country weighing bills to outlaw Sharia, or Muslim law – Obama called for Americans to treat Muslims with fairness and respect.

Obama called for “an America that doesn’t simply tolerate people of different backgrounds and beliefs, but an America where we are enriched by our diversity.”

“An America where we treat one another with respect and with dignity,” he continued, “remembering that here in the United States there is no ‘them’ or ‘us;’ it’s just us.”

Iftar dinners are held during Ramadan to break the daily fast. President Bill Clinton started the tradition of such dinners at the White House, with George W. Bush and Obama continuing it.

I think we should show the rest of the world that Americans are one. Americans muslims are educated people. They are very polite, respectful and hard working people. Our President is doing the right thing. He is reminding us of our unity. Unlike his predecessor who didn't stop dividing us and building Hate among Americans.

The Christians in America believe it is their mission to save the people of world from themselves. Faith is the cornerstone of anyones existance, whether that faith be Christian, Islam, Jewish, Shinto or any one of the hundreds of faiths in the world today. The Christians are the only religious group to go into foreign countries to try to make people give up their faith, the cornerstone of their existance, to become Christian. No other faith does this. This is itself a form of silent terrorism.

Do you know why al-qaedah rage a war with Americans? It because Islam Kwait ask for help. Islam alqedah osama laden dont
like if Americans infidels step in Arabian Desert that he claim as holy land. The problem liescin internal islam itself. To much different interpretation between islam clerics.

I completely agree with Mr Obama that we should treat everyone with dignity and respect. However, I fail to see how diversity enriches us. It causes tension, strife, and divides us into groups. We need to be more focused on living as individuals and being americans instead of being Muslim-American, African-American, Mexican-Americans, gay -Americans etc.

Every man deserves to be judged by first his actions, and second by the content of his character. That is why I resent lumping people into these groups. The groups invite people to see us vs them.

I think people are lumped into groups when there oppression caused by the majority on the minority. They single out the minority which cuases them to group together and fight for the same rights the majority has, enjoys but takes for granted.

"I fail to see how diversity enriches us"....have you ever had taco? Have you ever had a curry dish? How about Mu Shu pork? But forget food how about nathematics and philosophy or the sitar. Have you ever heard of Namrata Singh Gujral now that is diversity! And oh yes have you ever been to a pride parade? Tip of the iceberg I would argue that without diversity there is no evolution of culture.

Thanks Catholic Man. Great points. I would also argue that it's the diversity of the immigrants in the US that makes this country what it is today. None of us would be here if it wasn't for immigrants, i'm not sure how people forget this.

How right you are Cosmic Chick. Even the "Native Americans" migrated thousands of years ago through Asia, over the Bering Strait during the winter when it was frozen over, and settled into a new land that would eventually be the nations in North and South America

Faith, considering Canada just voted in a Conservative government your statement seems to be an unthinking stereotype.

      August 11, 2011 at 10:33 am |
    • Faith

Jean, Canadians should eli-minate their deeply rooted anti-American att-itude. Peace and socialism made them unthinkers. They hate conservatives by instinct. Canadian conservatives are like American liberals, though they are better than Canadian liberals.

      August 11, 2011 at 10:38 am |
    • Ed DFW

You got that it so wrong. It's the conservatives of America who are mainly uneducated regarding politics, the economy and social issues. They think they are voting for low taxes, yet they vote for Republicans who are only concerned about the wealthy and big business and keeping their big tax breaks in place at the expense of the poor and elderly. They could care less about the lower and middle classs, yet it's these uneducated people who vote for them thinking they are doing something God wants them to do. They get their news from an extremely one sided so called "news" source. It's the conservatives that keep this country regressing, instead of progressing.

      August 11, 2011 at 10:55 am |
    • CosmoChick

oh my goodness, talk about blanket statements Faith! have you even been to Canada? Do you know what Harper stands for? Have you spent time with conservatives in the west of the country?

You say "They hate conservatives by instinct.", um... you know this how?

You say "Peace and socialism made them unthinkers"... so peace is a bad thing? and i wish the US would stop throwing the socialism word around like it's the root of all evil, do you even know what socialism is? you do realize it's not communism, yes? You do realize that the majority of western countries (including the US) build there society on a majority of socialist principles, yes?

and finally, you like to use the word "think": canadians don't think, peace makes them unthinkers... given that your handle is faith (which, in itself, means to believe without proof... therefore, no thinking involved), i find that a little ironic.

canadians are some of the most level-headed people i know. the country works and is united, even amongst the different parties. is it perfect? of course not, but where is it perfect? right now, it looks a hell of a lot better than the turmoil the US is in, that's for sure.

President Obama is not my President but here in the North we respect and admire a man who has taken nothing but attacks and put downs like no other man has, yet he manages to rise and call all the American people to gether to be one United Natiion. It is sad that America is so divided , it is sad to see that one step forward is equal to ten steps backward. you need to wake up follks and treat each individual with respect and you shall get the same in return. when my kids were growing up they never saw colour, race and ethnicity in any of the people around them, if you asked them what the background of their friend was ....the answer would be " She is canadian" while they gave me the 'are you stupid ' look!
so I have learnt and you should too.... "They are American"
    Have a great day America!

Unholy Koran, Sura 5, Verse 51:

O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for friends. They are friends one to another. He among you who taketh them for friends is (one) of them. Lo! Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk.

    ( سورة المائدة , Al-Maeda, Sura #5, Verse #51)

Interpretation: With "O ye who believe!" Muhammad means Muslims. Thus, Muslims are forbidden to have friendship with Jews and Christians. In Muhammad eyes Jews and Christians are a wrongdoing folk.

Conclusion: Muslims are not safe and cannot be safe, because Muhammad has forbidden them to be our (the Christians) friends.

Muslims are nice and quiet when they are in the minority, but in Islamic countries they persecute other religions all the time , don't think once Muslims become more populous in the west that we will see their true colors, wolves in sheep's clothing come to mind. You speak in generalities about things you are wholly ignorant of. I am a Hindu who grew up in an middle eastern, Islamic nation. If you know ANYthing about world history you will know that Hindus and Muslims have shared a contentious relationship at best. While Muslims were very much in the majority we still had temples, synagogues, multiple churches for the many different faiths and schools for every single different type of education system. During BOTH Gulf wars Muscat, Oman served as an American Naval base. So don't let your prejudice blind you. I agree you have verifiable reasons to be leery of this religion and these peoples, but for God's sake first arm your self with knowledge before spouting off.

Today rulers are mostly concerned about the economical efficiency of their citizens or their population.

The main aim of today rulers is it to keep human beings like cattle and to gain tax revenue like milk and meat of big flock.

Basic condition for a most effectively working population is the absence of any conflicts between the single citizens. Citizens are supposed to cooperate at any rate. Faith has to be limited on Sunday or Friday. No chattering of religion during the workweek, please. During the workweek you are supposed to be a human robot without any higher thoughts.

In order to prevent any conflict between the Christian tax-payers and the Muslim tax-payers Obama equalizes Christianity and Islam. Main thing economy runs well.

Obama makes a big mistake. Basic condition for a high-profit-economy is not the absence of any conflict between the slavish workers (human robots), but the presence of innovation. Innovation is something, which cannot be forced by the state. Innovation depends on inspired single persons. Inspiration is God's matter. He can give it or not. Thus, a powerful economy depends on God.

How would reign a Christian president (Basileus)?

A Christian president would make it clear that Chrisitianity is the most favored religion. There is too much historical evidence for the truth of Christianity. He would submit ecomical requirements under the premiss of promoting Christianity. Christianity is the Royal Belief.

Of course, under a rule of a Christian president Muslim civilans or citizens would not be persecuted at all. They had the same rights and duties like the Christians. Yet it would be clear that their belief is not desireable and the are wished to convert.

Such a country would be blessed by the Almighty.

God has prescribed Christianity as the single true religion. Every state, which supports God's religion, would be blessed.

Muslims should not serve within the army, police or any agency, which is busy with security-tasks. Muslims are not safe. By the Koran Muslims are prohibited to be friends of Christians. Also Muslims should not be part of the administration.

To Rainer – So, your Muslim brothers shouldn't like Christians, participate in adminstrative position and yet, you and yours come to our country to enjoy our freedoms that most Muslims in other countries only dream of. You sir, are why people like myself have misgivings over and a high level of mistrust. I suggest you pack your bags and spread your rot in some other country. I am a Protestant. I cited the Koran, just in order to make clear that Muslims cannot be true friends of Christians, because their Prophet has forbidden friendship with Christians.

When Muslims behave friendly, it can be part of an evil strategy. It is possible that they try to gain our confidence, in order to infiltrate our societies for a later civil war.

So... In Rainer World, people who live under Christian theocracies are the most innovative, Christians are the only people capable of innovation, and barring a people from participation in government based on their religion while subjecting them to constant and insti-tutionalized pressure to convert is not persecuting them. Gotcha.

Whatever you do, avoid the Fox News comments! I read some last night and actually felt sick. We can only hope a minority of extremists are represented and that most people don't share their views.

Of course, there are plenty of reasonable people on CNN threads trying to express moderate and tolerant ideas, too. It's not that I'm against right-wing ideas, either. It's the viciousness of tone and word in many right-wing posts that is so disturbing.

I'd only like the muslims to go one more step and that is to become the boldest enemy of radical Islam! They need to step in the line of fire collectively and denounce the acts of radical muslim terror to the point that they should send groups of muslims (imams, etc.) to the regions where the taliban are and those groups should pray with the taliban for peace, resolve, and forgiveness. Then, they should immediately head to Somalia and pray with those muslims while at the same time feeding the millions of starving muslim women and children. Why are we sending primarily Christian warriors to calm a primarily Islamic issue? Why are not the muslims sending muslims to quel the radicalists? Then and only then can we even consider the idea of peace in this matter.

If we as true followers and believers in Christ only showed love and compasion towards non-muslims, then we would he hiding our light. We would be putting it under a basket. Jesus told us to put our light on a pedistal. People that God created need our help, and just because they are starving half way around the world doesn't mean they are any less significant. If everyone in a civilized nation just gave a dollar for everyone in there household, and gave it towards feeding these people in Africa that you say are a Muslim resposibility, they would see the true miracles and power of Jesus Christ.

People around here are just plain lazy thinkers. Bigots have low resolution brains.

Of course it is much EASIER to paint an entire religion or an entire race with a broad brush. It is simple to blame the whole world of Muslims for what a few did. Taking people as individuals is a lot of work.

The examples of Muslim patriotism this Christian president dared to point out are simple facts people. It is no one's problem but your own if the facts don't fit into your simple, childish take on things.

Then again, who ever said that ethics and justice were meant to be easy?

Bigotry is a HUMAN syndrome. The extremists who attacked us had it. The people saying every Muslim on the planet deserves to be treated as if they were involved have it too. They are the same. It doesn't matter what "team" you are on – a bigoted mind will never be able to handle shades that exist.

The problem is, empathy is learned. If you never learned, you will never understand. You are not capable. You don't have the mental resolution to pick up the image. Bigots are like a black and white TV in a high-def world. They are not just missing the true picture, they are obsolete.

The sad thing is, somehow so many of them expect to be applauded for it...as if taking the easy way out amounts to some kind of achievement.

Thank You Mr. Obama. you are not only a brilliant but a great Humanitarian , trying to reduce the fire of hatred against Muslims.
You are also applying the eternal good principles of Abrahamic religions to care for your neighbor as you would care for yourselves.
In the Torah the other day I read , that the person who was preparing the fire for others got burn't himself to ashes in that same fire.
You are potting down the fire of hatred that is being fanned by bigots , that is seen day in and day out by on the radio, newspaper and Telivision. The results are apparent., by the burning of mosques that is taking place in My America. That I adopted for the past 30 years and I am a Physicians , like thousands of Muslim Physicians I am serving my fellow Americans both by pay as well as a volunteer physician. Doing my part towards providing medical care to all.
It is a crying shame to see Qur'an being burn't , When Qur'an mentions the name of Jesus son of Mary 25 times ( There is more mention of his Miracles in Qur'an than in the Bible, and it Mentions all the challenges and miracles of Moses , and he is too mentioned by Name 125 times. ) Muslims engineers are serving America similarly. Muslim scientists are serving as well . The director of the Mars program is a Muslim Scientist.
The Jails of America are filled to the Brim , and this is for the information of the uninformed that it is not Muslims who are filling it up. Because most of the residents crimes are drug related and violence related .
Those who have quoted about fighting being mentioned in Qur'an , Yes is related to conditions Mecca then, and it is the same or even worse fighting is proposed both the earlier Deutoronomy. It even says annihilate your neighbor. It does't apply to the present day.
What applies to present day is the Universal principles of caring for a Human being. Be good to your parents, dont kill your children for the fear of lack of food , as food is given to you and to your children, don't get intoxicated by liquid or solid or by hate.don't gamble, don't charge interest to the extant that you destroy a man and his livlihood and yank his house ( we all saw the recent housing havoc) Enjoy and enforce justice for all ,speak the truth even if it is to be against your own parents are kindred. These are the beautiful principles taught in the Qur'an One last one is Taking one life unjustly is like taking the life of entire Humanity and saving one life is like saving entire humanity. you will see it Qur'an , Bible and Torah.
Fort Hood Physician Unfortunately was sick , and he did not realise his own sickness , and did not seek help . It is very unfortunate and sad ,to all Americans : Muslims , Christians , Jews and others.Muslims can get sick too like all other Americans or Humans.
Sometime back a Jewish Physician from NewYork , went and opened fire at the Al Aqsa Muslims who were praying and prostrating in a Mosque. Does it means Judaism is bad , because of that sick Jew ? No it is not . Same thing applies to Islam as well, and any other religion.
I hope The forces behind this persecution of Muslims , by alleging all Nazi like false propaganda and the spread of hatred , will stop doing it.

Thank you, Doctor for all that you do and all of your contributions to the cause. However, I must say that I am afraid at this point your efforts are not as effective as they could be. While assembled at your mosques for prayer each day, why do muslims not establish missionaries, for the lack of a better term, to go to those regions such as Afghanistan and Somalia and help to quel the radicalists with prayer, encouragement, forgiveness, and guide them to resolve their issues in a peaceful way? Why not stand in the line of fire, like our American Service members are doing as we speak, and instead of shooting at them, maybe they could pray together with their fellow muslim brothers for peace and cohesion. This way, the U.S. Armed Services along with NATO and all other "occupiers" could go home to their families. I am of the opinion that the muslim has the loudest and most effective voice in these issues but they are the quietest group. You may be targeted, temporarily, because that is human nature and it is wrong, but you have the best advantage to bring this to a peaceful resolve. Much better than drones. Send muslims to Afghanistan and Somalia by the droves and feed your muslim brothers both spiritually and literally! Good day to you, Doctor, and peace...from a Christian brother!

      August 11, 2011 at 8:38 am |
    • *SIGH*

Joe, there are many brave muslims who try to do what you suggest. I think the issue is deeper thanyou give credit for and it is for one of 2 reasons: 1) these regions you refer to are places where some American muslims today have escaped from. Some do go back to try and help but others have put it behind and fear the day they see it again or 2) the radicals view muslims who become part of the west as a bigger 'evil' than the west itself. Radical imams/mullahs/whatever preach things like "The deepest layer of hell is where we will send those who call themselves muslim and pray next to you but lay with the devil (i.e. the west)." Thus the American muslim is considered a greater enemy than the American non-muslim. This is also why American muslims have it toughest because they are viewed as the enemy by many fellow Americans as well as by radicals abroad.

Dr. Humaira, thank you for your kind note. I am a muslim and an officer in the U.S. Army. I have been deployed twice and I know there will be more like that. If anybody is testing our ability by saying, 'you muslim, put your life in the harms way' – my respond to them (specially to JoeProfet) that there are hundreds and thousands of muslim service members serving in defending our great country. So, JoeProfet and others, don't question our patriotism without knowing the fact on the ground. Again, thanks Dr. Humaira for what you do for the nation and your kind note.

      @ Humaira

" It is a crying shame to see Qur'an being burn't..."

Of course it is. It's a shame when any book is burned, but what's worse is the violent, bloodthirsty Islamic reaction.

-That's – what you should be calling a "crying shame."

@Khan: Thank you for your to Our Country.
Happy fasting , feeding and feasting in the blessed month of Ramazaan, when the holy book of Qur'an was started to be given. Not only the Qur'an some say even the Torah , the Bible were given in the same month. Moses saw the reflection of God on the mount in the same month. Let us emphasize the commanality and celebrate the diversity. Peace and Happiness to all.

    What Obama should have said:

What instigated the attack on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon? And what drives today's 24/7 mosque/imam-planned acts of terror and horror?

The koran, Mohammed's book of death for all infidels and Muslim domination of the world by any means. Muslims must clean up this book removing said passages admitting that they are based on the Gabriel myth and therefore obviously the hallucinations and/or lies of Mohammed.

Then we can talk about the safety and location of mosques and what is taught therein. Until then, no male Muslim can be trusted anytime or anywhere..................................

alleging hallucinations and lies to the prophet of Islam. Why don't you find out the truth about 9/11 . It was an attack inside homeland ,upon the unsuspecting my fellow Americans about 3000 dead, who woke up one day to get killed for no fault of theirs, one day during their effort to get a livelihood for themselves and their families, brilliant ones, and ordinary one all alike got blown up to dust in a cloud of smoke. One has to be lobotomised to agree to accept that a building will not simmer and burn , but will get demolished by the two planes . The twin towers were not the only ones that got blown up that day , but even Building 7 , a forty seven storied building too got blown up to powder on 9/11 at 5 Pm. ( Twin Towers on 9/11 at 8 Am ) and guess what the building 7 did not even got hit by an airplane. So who had planned this so well. It is said ,as I read in News papers, the structural engineers and fire experts demolishing derby experts, say: To demolish the buildings of this magnitude needs months of planning. So Please get your head out of sand, the whole world has watched towers and innocent Americans blown into powder, in order to draw the American Men and money into these present day wars.
Before you talk rubbish against the man who has only confirmed , the messages of , Moses and Jesus. son of Mary , read and speak the truth. Those Dead Americans shall not die in vain, if the living ones determine the truth and prosecute the perpetrators of this crime, be they be Muslims , Jews or Christians. There should be prosecution of the culprits no matter what religion they belong , but there should not the be the persecution of the religious group as a whole .
The fact is the more you speak lies about the Prophet of Islam , the more Human beings get thirsty to know about his message and read Qur'an and having found the beauty of Qur'an and its purity and its message to make Human life better, the more people accept his message. In case if you have not read qur'an : Read at Qur'anexplorer.com.It is in 7 languages. The great British man Marmaduke Pickthal' s is the one that I read as I can't understand fully Arabic, though when read in Arabic and the meaning is understood , one gets ecstatic.
Mohammed's message : to be good to parents ,care for those who are less fortunate than you, don't kill your unborn for fear of food, value human life , speak truthfully and justly even if it is against you own parents or kin ,Eat and drink the good food that is given to you and do not create wars in the land is what is being taught in the Masajids( Mosques) 24/7/365 here in America and all over the world.
If any particular person does encourages war and hatred, he is no different from you, it is not the fault of Mohammed's teachings , or that of Jesus son of Mary's teachings or that of Moses teachings.(When christian and Jewish priests encourage hate and war.)
Peace be upon them all those sent by God.. Praise to God Almighty who gave us the discrimination of good and bad through them. Peace and light of guidance , and a manly American's courage to you, more importantly the love of Humanity .
This Land is not yours , it is not mine but it is ours..The resources of the Land are to be shared together with thankfulness to God Almighty who gave it us. If only one thing ,if he takes away that is water, then there will no such thing as mine and yours. So let us live in Peace and live with humility and with thankfulness. Spread peace instead of spreading lies and hatred or else that very thing may come back hauntingly to you or your family. So this beautiful time given to will not get wasted. here.

The right side Republicans and Tea Partiers truly are what's wrong with this country. Their unwillingness is unispiring, unpatriotic, and just shameful. Dick Cheney once said "debt doesn't matter". This was when he and Bush were spending (like an administration does) but they were spending their's on the worst kinds of things. Wars, lobbyists, and oil greed. But when the Dems and Obama want to spend money on actual real American problems here at home? Oh hellll no. You conservatives make me sick. Grow up children..

Liberals made each American generation corrosive by teaching lies on the US history. Their evil acts return to their own heads – the America is getting sick and weakened from it.
